Though it's haunted by goblins, ghosts, and monsters, it is hard to find anything very satanic in much of this music, except its fiendishly difficult pyrotechnics. Its sole purpose is to display Gil Shaham's devilishly dazzling virtuosity, glorious tone, elegance, humor, and bewitching charm. The only substantial piece is Tartini's "Devil's Trill Sonata," in Kreisler's edition complete with his long, diabolically strenuous cadenza; Shaham plays it very beautifully, with genuine, moving expressiveness. Elsewhere, his tongue is never far from his cheek, whether he is tossing off Bazzini's "Rondo de Lutins" perfectly at top speed, or having fun with the fireworks of Korngold's "Caprice fantastique," Sarasate's "Faust Fantasie," Grieg's "Puck" arranged by Joseph Achron, Paganini's Caprice No. 13, with a piano part by Robert Schumann, and Saint-Saëns' "Dance macabre," in which the pianist doubles for a whole orchestra. There are also transcriptions of passionately romantic pieces by Brahms and Mendelssohn, and excursions into different styles: William Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost" rag; "Transylvanian Lullaby" from John Morris's soundtrack for "Young Frankenstein" transcribed by Shaham's pianist, Jonathan Feldman; and the title piece, "Devil's Dance" arranged by John Williams from his soundtrack for "The Witches of Eastwick." You can safely invite this devil of a violinist into your home--he is excellent company. --Edith Eisler

Halloween Violin.......2005-10-17
While not always frightening as much as classical music with a Halloween theme, this is a fine recording to play at parties if the guests fancy this kind of music. The title refers to the Devil's Dance, for violin & piano from the film Witches of Eastwick, a work composed by John Williams. It is followed by A Transylvanian Rhapsody from the comic film Young Frankeinstein. The most famous piece of all "Danse Macabre" was Saint Saens' ghoulish work that nearly caused his mother a heart attack at the premire. Using stage effects like smoke and mist, Saint Saens had dancing skeletons waltzing on stage. The Devil Trill Sonata by Tartini has a frightening story behind it. It was rumored that the composer dreamt that the Devil gave him the score to this violin piece. It is played at an impossible speed and is one of the most difficult violin pieces ever composed. Only few violinists take on this piece. The music on this album is however not as scary as some other classical Halloween CD's out there but violin afficionados will be quite delighted.
Puzzling choices, and not all that devilish.......2004-10-21
I'll say right off that Shaham's technique is top-notch, which is what one expects from such an album. And this is fine playing, with the violin and piano generally blending well.
But while this was clearly intended to be a "concept album," the artists/producers made several puzzling (and frustrating) choices that left me wondering just what the concept was supposed to be. The music is "devilishly difficult" at some times (the Tartini, for example), "creepy and eerie" at others (the "Danse macabre", others). However, several of the pieces are neither dazzingly difficult nor all that creepy - the Brahms and the Mendelssohn, for example, fail both definitions and, frankly, just don't seem to fit on this album. And then, there's the Paganini B-flat caprice - a solo violin piece transcribed for violin and piano, weakening the focus on violin virtuosity - while the Ysaye is left as a solo piece . . . well, a **piece** of a piece - we're given only a part of one movement of a four-movement work that is both very difficult AND built around that ultimate "creepy" theme, the "Dies Irae." Why only part of a single movement?
The net effect of all this is an album that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's almost as if someone committed to an album concept without making sure there was enough material to fill the album. Further quibbles: the violin is placed somewhat too far back, for my taste; on a virtuoso album, I want to be "up close" to catch all the nuances of the performance. And the balance between violin and piano is less than ideal at times, at least to my ear.
As I said, the playing is fine; it's the concept execution that falls short of "as advertised."
Watch Out Where You Play This CD.......2002-05-17
As everyone says this is an extremely enjoyable disc. While it played fine in my ordinary CD player, the one in my computer couldn't handle it. Not only wouldn't it play, but it crashed the whole machine. Real deviltry at work!
... the best music ever recorded!.......2002-05-07
Sometimes I forget to breathe-this CD is so mind-blowing! This is the type of CD that you can't help but wave your hands around pretending to conduct the song!........ Ok.... Deep breathes.......o-o...I have to calm down! Now this CD features not just the best musicians but the best composers. They are John Williams (simply the best), Camille Saint-Saens (who composed one of the most famous "spooky" songs: Danse macabre!) ,and John Morris, you know.... Composed the music for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the funniest movie EVER! And guess what the theme song is on the CD!.. The charming yet spooky.........'Young Frankenstein': A Transylvania Lullaby. Hexenlied, one of my favorites, is by MR. Felix Mendelssohn (no he's not Felix the cat!)..........So...many....good.....songs....so.....Little--t-t-time. OK. It's time to wrap things up.....BUY THIS CD, YOU WON'T REGRET IT! :)
Pretty good.......2002-01-23
This CD has pretty interesting selection. My only qualm about it is sometimes it seems that the piano is competing for volume with the soloist, especially in Dans Macabre. This rendition is definitely not my favourite version. But some other gems make up for this, like Devils Dance, and La Ronde des Lutins. Devils dance is really well arranged and performed, and thats my favourite track on this album.

Whatta Voice ... .......2004-12-09
You wouldn't know it if you didn't read her bio or visit her web site, but Grey's done a whole lot of voice overs for cartoons. Real bigtime Hollywood type characters you'd recognize in a heartbeat. But that's nothing compared to her considerable talents as a singer and interpreter of American songs. She's got a true musical instrument that reaches you by telling a story through song. She's just wonderful.
Glorious Forgery.......2004-05-24
The Graceful Ghost is the most gorgeous album from the 1800s you'll hear this year. DeLisle comes on like the ghost of Mother Maybelle or Kitty Wells (although sexier and more polished than either), and her songwriting shows ample hours studying at the feet of Dolly Parton (insert jokes about "the shade" here). A little research shows that DeLisle is an ultra-slick Hollywood voiceover queen and has released two homegrown retro-country albums prior to taking the big leap into spooky folk aimed straight for the O Brother! market. Yeah, I'm a bit jaded, but this album is clearly a fake and not afraid to admit it. (I love how the added ambient crackles and hiss on some songs fade out before the music does!) And yet, it's stunningly beautiful and DeLisle's talent as a singer and a songwriter cannot be denied. But she seems very market savvy/driven and going after a niche, I think; too often from head and not from the heart as it were. Still, it's far, far, far superior to the icky yuppie "country" slopped out on Norah Jones version 2.0. I wouldn't recommend The Graceful Ghost to anyone in place of authentic rural American field recordings, however I do think it stands a good chance to make my list for the best of '04 -- 2004 and not 1804, that is.
the nineteenth century, yes, but not our nineteenth century.......2004-04-21
Grey De Lisle has beauty -- physical and esthetic -- and an exotic, mysterious name and sound. She is also a brilliant mimic. Reread the previous sentence, and see where the emphasis falls. Was it on "brilliant" or "mimic"? If it was the latter, you'll hear the best imitation that will ever be of Dolly Parton at her most traditional-sounding. If your eye fell on "brilliant," you will probably, on hearing the appropriately titled Graceful Ghost (which you can read on two levels; see "brilliant" and "mimic" above), hear something that amounts to a smart, subtle, deeply understood approximation of the old mountain songs and urban parlor ballads that inspired, and comprised the repertoire of, the Carter Family. Even the titles (though in prosaic fact denoting De Lisle originals) -- "The Maple Tree," "Tell Me True," "Turtle Dove," "Black Haired Boy" -- sound like the titles of Carter Family songs from a parallel universe. Actually, "Katy Allen" brings to the astonished senses the notion of an extraordinarily improbable collaboration between the Carter Family and Donovan. All of the songs here are very good for what they are, if you can accept what they are, but long after you've turned off the stereo -- no matter who you are, whatever you think of what's going on here -- it is unlikely that "Katy Allen" will let you be.
A moody, challenging Americana album.......2004-04-08
Wow... talk about a shift of direction! After self-releasing a pair of semi-dismal rockabilly-retro albums, LA-based singer-songwriter Grey DeLisle has apparently found her metier, slowing things down and penning a bunch of spooky-sounding Carter Family/Dolly Parton-styled acoustic, old-timey ballads, material that fits her somewhat shaky voice much better than the uptempo bluesiness of the rockabilly scene. Before this disc came out, she was firmly planted on my "danger sign" list -- now I'm really curious to see where she goes from here. Admittedly, this disc is still gimmicky and bandwagonesque in an entirely different kind of way, but it has an atmospheric feel that works for me. Definitely worth checking out... Fans of Be Good Tanyas and Jolie Holland will probably like this as well.
Dolly Parton meets Ken Burns at the Civil War.......2004-03-18
This stunning CD is like a cross between the simple and infectious porch music of an early Dolly Parton record and a smart and evocative soundtrack of a Civil War movie. These aren't so much songs as little portraits whose characters ache-with both lust and sorrow. The CD is almost whimsical in the light touch it gives these deep lyrics. Grey De Lisle first caught my ear with her gorgeous voice and sometimes hilarious, always woeful lyrics about man problems on her self-produced Homewrecker CD (most memorable line: "I shoved 19 years of nerve into this dress, and I'm only 22"). This new CD uses her lyrical cleverness to tell stories of whole, desperate lives. I was so awestruck on first listen that I wondered if it would wear well: it does. It has that easygoing charm of Dolly's early records. I listen over and over as if the songs are old classics that keep the memories alive of lost stories and lost loves. They sound so genuine that even the one cover of a country classic seems like De Lisle's own. It's the simplicity that brings me back; it sounds like it was recorded on vintage sound equipment with no more in it than a few great musicians, their instruments, and their whole hearts. My favorite CD of this year.

wonderful collection.......2005-08-24
This is a great collection of rags of various styles. The Graceful Ghost is just a wonderful flowing rag bordering on classical, and at the other end is the very fun Entertainer's Rag. Richard Bowling plays them all well. The three Zez Confrey cuts are not to my liking so much, but the rest is a set of play over and over things.

The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.
Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:
A MASTERPIECE! JOAN MORRIS AT HER PEAK!.......2000-04-30
I have been a Joan Morris fan for over 20 years and own many of her superb albums. More than any others, "Let's Do It: Live in Aspen" is a dazzling tour de force for Ms. Morris and her accompanist/husband, William Bolcom.
No singer can match Joan Morris's vocal and interpretive skills. Her phrasing and timing are impeccable! She can take a song you've heard a million times (by others) and make it breathtakingly unforgettable. Examples on this disc include "Always," "Bill," "Let's Do It" and - my favorite - "On the Banks of the Wabash." And William Bolcom's lilting piano composition, "Graceful Ghost," written in his father's memory, will knock your socks off!
In short, treat yourself to this CD!
