I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone,color, and phrasing is incredible.

A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

My whole family are Jim Reeves fans and I have been listening to his music since the 1960s. This is a wonderful CD filled with his beautiful voice. It brings back fond memories of my mom & dad who loved him as well. I just sing along to my heart's content with this wonderful CD.

This has been and still is one of the most beautiful inspirational albums by the inimitable Jim Reeves that I have really enjoyed many decades ago as a teenager in Guyana, a former British colony.It is a spiritual banquet for the soul and a great source of comfort to the heart. I love the beautiful renditions of We Thank Thee, Where We'll Never Grow Old,I'll Fly Away,Across The Bridge, Have Thine Own Way Lord. My Cathedral, The Night Watch,I'd Rather Have Jesus, Where Do I Go From Here, Take My Hand Precious Lord, This World Is Not My Home, Oh, Gentle Shepherd and How Long Has It Been.I feel that Jim Reeves was one of God's greatest gifts to man, with his sweet rich, velvety, baritone voice. For most people, gospel music is either too abrasive or too slickly done. Its got to have soul but needn't be emotionally overwraught. Jim Reeves performances are just right. For fanatics he may be too smooth, but every one else can just appreciate the fact that these lovely songs are performed by one of the warmest voices in recorded history. It is a perfectly lovely baritone that is never overextended. Familiar hymns like 'I'd Rather Have Jesus' and 'Take My Hand Precious Lord' are sung with equal measures of confidence and humility. Less familiar songs like 'My Cathedral' and 'We Thank Thee' are given what must become definitive performances. If you enjoy Elvis' quieter gospel recordings, you will love this album.

What a beautiful album by the velvet voice of country music Mr. Jim Reeves! When released in 1962 this album had 12 songs on it, this remastered version has 16. The sound quality is superb! The song selection, marvelous! Tracks like "Where we'll never grow old", "I'd rather have Jesus", and "My Cathedral" are gospel music classics! And who better to sing these hymns than Jim Reeves. Even if you don't like religious music, you can't help but love this cd. 36 years after his death, these Jim Reeves recordings still sound as fresh as the day they were recorded. And if you have always been curious about the velvet voice of Jim Reeves, look no further! This is a great way to get to know this man's timeless voice. I'm glad this is a cd release, if it were on vinyl, it would be worn out by now! I strongly recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys Jim Reeves, and especially to music fans who never heard of Gentlemen Jim. You like music? This will be music to EVERYONE'S EARS!!! This album is definetly a Gospel Treasure that has been hidden for far too long. I grew up as a child listening to my parents playing this album every Sunday. Today I am a grown woman, and I still yearn to hear sweet sounds of Jim Reeves. My favorite songs on this album are: Precious Lord Take My Hand, My Cathedral & This World is Not My Home. This album has not just touched my life, but the life of many of my family and friends. When I listen to Jim's voice on this album, I definetly know that the Divine one put him here on this earth to glorify us with his sound and style of Grand Traditional Gospel. They are numerous gospel albums out there to mention, but this is by a far the most superlative of them all. I have spent years writing to BMG & Heartland trying to get this album printed on cd, until I came across a company that was selling this as an Import from out of Germany. I ordered 3, and I also had a family member(uncle)whom ordered 4. This album will not only bless your heart, but it will also comfort your soul. Whenever I listen to this album it just does something special to my heart, that only the Divine one can explain. This album will definetly change your life in anyway possible. One of Parkening's Finest.......2007-01-16

A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.

Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.

Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.

The end of a Search.......2005-09-23

Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.

This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.

1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.

In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!

This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Perfect introduction to the carillon..........1998-10-30

James Lawson plays the carillon at the Crystal Cathedral, a unique instrument because of its major-third overtones as opposed to the typical minor-third overtones of a carillon. The Cathedral Carillon has a particularly rich sound, which Lawson harnesses with a flair in his arrangements of hymns tunes and recognizable classics. The carillon has long been known as the most democratic of instruments, and Lawson plays it as it should be heard--with music people know and love.

This recording is very relaxing as well, and is of paticular use as focus music for prayer or small worship settings, or for listening at the end of a long day.

Amazing..............2004-05-16

BACH ON GUITAR now there's a novalty...NO, actually Bach on Guitar is an excellent combination. To my knowlege Bach did not compose for the classical guitar directly, however he did write some Lute pieces which can be played on guitar with a little "tweaking". However much of Bach's music can be transcribed to to classical Guitar. (Notice that I said Classical Guitar not the "machine gun" noise you would hear from a rock guitar with the 1000watt--120db amplifiers blairing at you like a in a Rock concert!!)
Christopher Parkening, I think, demonstrates this quite well.
The music that eminates from his Guitar blends perfectly this the Orchestra accompaniment. In listen to him play...I find myself humming or whisling some of these "mind stickers" duing the day. I rate this CD six+ stars..unfortunately only 5 stars is is allowed!!!!

Incredible playing, beautiful songs!.......2001-11-06

Christopher Parkening is a genius. If anyone doubts that, I give and advice: hear this album. His technique is impressive, his notes are so clean! And his feeling, his passion in his playing is very beautiful, it really represents the soul of it, I'm sure that Bach would be very pleased and proud of Parkening's playing.

A beautiful recording, made be a superb artist who clearly reveres this sublime music and plays is accordingly. The recording of Bach's "Sleepers Awake" is especially esquisite - it's so lovely I find myself pausing in the middle of whatever I'm doing when it plays to enjoy a small wave of serenity, and reverence for the unsurpassed beauty of this music. It can bring tears to the eyes even after a hundred listenings. Thanks, Christopher for your artistry! Your music plays often in our home, and sets a lovely, serene, and calming tone.

For one who loves the classical guitar and Bach, this is the ultimate. Parkening does such an excellent job, backed up the the LA Chamber Orchestra. Their rendition of my favorite "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "God Alone Shall Have My Heart" are sensational!
