Rear View Mirror

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Rear View Mirror is one of the first two titles in a live-and-obscure series Sugar Hill began preparing prior to the great folksinger's death. Originally given limited release in 1993, it provides an overview of the songwriter's career, reaching back frequently to his most productive period, 1968-72. Backed by second guitarist Danny Rowland and fiddler Owen Cody, Van Zandt works his way through tunes he'd performed hundreds--perhaps thousands--of times in coffeehouses and clubs from Arkansas to Australia. He does so, however, with enduring verve and veracity. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Here... Have Some Townes........2007-03-05

Having only started listening to Townes Van Zandt within the past year, I'm not totally familiar with all of his work. On that note, I would recommend this as a great place to start for anyone new to his music. The accompaniment is perfect for his music, consisting of only another guitar and a fiddle. I prefer some of these arrangements over the original studio tracks, as some of his album work is a bit too over-orchestrated. The heavy studio arrangements can sometimes distract from his delicate song craftsmanship and his engaging and descriptive lyrics. Here, amongst the minimal accompaniment, his vocal melodies and beautiful guitar-playing don't get lost.

Also, some of his greatest studio work is very difficult to get. For some reason the small label that owns the rights (Tomato) hasn't repressed his albums or even sold the rights to iTunes. This, on the other hand, is readily available and well worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt..........2006-08-09

Townes Van Zant was a great folk and folk country singer. This album has to be by far his best. Iv'e never heard an album more heartfelt than Rear View Mirror. His vocals, his guitar, and a fiddle, combine to be a great relaxing soothing combination. This album as some upbeat tunes that i guess you could say sounds like bluegrass and/or country. This of course being a live album you can still feel the emotion through him. I cant say anymore except everyone should own this album..except George Bush. I great buy..R.I.P. Townes Van Zant.

5 out of 5 stars For the sake of the song!.......2005-04-14

I rarely write reviews of music but feel that I must share my impressions of this CD. I have long heard some of my favorite singers praise the songwriting prowess of Townes but somehow never got around to buying one of his records. I finally picked this one up because it had two songs that were covered by two of my favorite singers--Lyle Lovett-"Lungs" (among others) and Steve Earle-"Tecumseh Valley". I was blown away by the sheer beauty and poetry of every song on this recording. Other reviewers seem to be comparing this to other Townes' records. I come from a different angle. As someone who has long heard Townes sopken of with the highest praise, I can say this disk does not disappoint and will influence me to fill out my collection of his recordings. I will also say that I am deeply frustrated that I never took advantage of the chance to see Townes perform while he was alive.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps his best disk.......2005-04-12

As a longtime fan, I own most of Townes Van Zant's cd's. This one is my favorite, the one I listen to over and over. If you're reading this, you should just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A great overview of a great songwriter...........2005-02-27

One of the greatest...Steve Earle once said something like ""TOWNES VAN ZANDT is the best songwriter in the whole world, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." I agree...

    Album Description

Many of the tracks on Rear View Mirror, Volume Two come from recordings that were considered lost and/or unsalvageable, but they were so unique, that it was well worth the restoration efforts. Sound quality throughout is excellent considering the nature of the original recordings.

5 out of 5 stars The Sound Quality on This Is Just Fine.......2005-02-04

From the prior review I expected something along the lines of some of the Stooges or MC5 stuff released on Bomp and Revenge, some dodgy semi-legit Johnny Thunders release, or the plethora of Hawkwind product. Instead, with the exception of a little distortion on the guitar once or twice, the sound is, under the circumstances, pristine. The liner notes indicate that this record was compiled and supervised by Townes' long-time friend and manager and approved by Townes prior to his death. You know whether you need it or not (c'mon you know you do).

2 out of 5 stars Another Spotty Post-Humous Townes Collection.......2004-10-18

Since "Rear View Mirror" is my favorite Townes Van Zandt album, I bought this on an impulse before reading anything about it. It was a big disappointment. Many of the recording are unlistenable or appear in better versions on other live recordings. I don't recommend this unless you are a Townes fanatic and need everything. Beware: since Townes died a few years ago, there have many questionable CDs released of his work and various suspect labels. Start with "Rear View Mirror" (Volume 1 - live, well-recorded virtual best of) or Live At The Old Quarter and avoid this one.

This song is the embodyment of human existance. It tells of how influences, people, places, and even memories come back to you throughout your life. Sometimes good, sometimes bad; they may also have a bigger influence on you then you realize. They are the objects in the rear view mirror that appear closer than they are. The mirror is in your soul that's just a car. And life is just a highway that your car's on.
