Though the title could as easily apply to most of Brown's output, Mixed Bag understates the eclecticism of this radical traditionalist's first release in almost three years. For fans of his pyrotechnic picking on his double-necked "guit-steel," there's an album-opening assault on Jerry Reed's "Guitar Man," as well as supercharged romps through "Catfish and Collard Greens" and "Wild Goose Chase." While the musical rewards of such virtuosic displays may wear thin quickly, the balladry of "Running with the Wind" and "Our First Bluebonnet Spring" strikes a richer, deeper vein, while the patented wordplay of "Cagey Bea" (about a Russian spy) and "Little Town Square" attests to Brown's distinctive songwriting. The biggest stretch is the horn-laden Dixieland of "Riverboat Shuffle," before the musicianship of veteran stalwarts such as pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins and drummer Buddy Harman returns the collection full-circle to classic country. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars One of best albums of all time.......2007-01-04

I love this album. Richie's best. I first saw him 40 years ago playing a Washington Square Park. Saw him stumping for John Lindsey for President in Florida in '71. Seeing him again this May. Special Musician. The whole album has wonderful tunes.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2006-08-27

I bought Mixed Bag back in 1967 after seeing Richie Havens on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His talent and equal modesty won me over and I've been a fan ever since. I wore the poor LP out and replaced it in the mid-70s. Over the years and moves I lost track of the LP and the cassette I dubbed it on. Oh Joy! I found the cassette in a box with about 150 others. Now I am converting this great album to CD and giving it a top spot on my iPod Playlists. My favorite song remains Morning, Morning but all the songs are strong and can stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Richie.......2006-08-15

Richie is the man. He has one of the most soothing voices I have ever heard. His versions of Just Like a Woman and elanor rigby are unreal. A must have for any folk music collector.

4 out of 5 stars New beginnings.......2006-03-03

Richie Havens has found a whole new audience for his intense, emotional vocal style thanks to his collaborations with the likes of Groove Armada and subsequent solo live appearances. In the seventies he owed his major popularity to his inclusion in the film of the 1969 Woodstock festival, for which he opened and had to fill for over an hour, eventually improvising what became his own anthem, Freedom. Before that he had been known to the cognoscenti from his influential Greenwich Village jazz-folk-rock interpretations of diverse material, using his unusual self-taught D-chord guitar tunings (not E-chord as is often written), and for his idiosyncratic song compositions.

Although not a prolific writer, the original songs which peppered his albums became cult items to be picked up and recorded by other artists.

Somebody at Marmalade Records in the UK must have liked him because Blossom Toes recorded the quirky Just Above My Hobby Horse's Head and Julie Driscoll covered Indian Rope Man. Bob Marley later adapted the same song as African Herbsman. The Jefferson Airplane covered High Flying Bird from this album, although written by Billy Edd Wheeler.

Mixed Bag was his third album but the first for Verve Folkways and serves as a good introduction to his work. It contains the single I Can't Make It Anymore (written by Gordon Lightfoot) and his own Handsome Johnny. He transforms Jesse Fuller's San Francisco Bay Blues by slowing it down and performing it as a jazz rather than blues standard. The lengthy centre-piece Follow has a stately dignity and was later used in the films The War and A Walk On The Moon, and there are also passionate and timeless renditions of Eleanor Rigby and Just Like A Woman performed in his own style
(review dated 17 December 2003)

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Acoustic Guitarist in the World.......2004-07-01

I heard Richie Havens for the first time at the 30th Anniversary Concert for Bob Dylan, where he delivered a magisterial performance of Just Like A Woman. I had always loved the song for its brilliant series of chord changes and its overall maturity, but I didn't appreciate its poignancy and beauty until I heard Richie Havens perform it.

I have been a fan ever since. Havens reminds me of another personal hero, Nina Simone, in that he deconstructs a song -- be it a standard, an original composition, or an obscure gem -- and reconstructs it in a way that is breathtaking and intoxicating. He doesn't just take his listeners through a song, but takes them into it, to explore its heart and soul and real meaning. He pours every ounce of his being into each performance, and the emotional effect is staggering.

His uncanny sense of lyrical phrasing, his percussive approach to strumming, and his technical virtuosity are truly unique. He is arguably the finest acoustic guitarist in the world, and deserves to be heard by anyone with ears.

Anyone notice that Junior's picture on the front of Mixed Bag is very similar to Richie Haven's picture on the cover of his Mixed Bag album? More than a coincidence? Anybody have any knowledge as to if Junior did this on purpose? I bet he did!
His guit-steel guitar combines 50's, Hendrix and pedal steel sounds to make Junior unique and refreshing. I always include Junior when I want to hear great guitar work and great blues.

Amazon.com essential recording

The sound of the cello is often compared to the human voice but, as Jordi Savall proves on the riveting Les Voix Humaines, perhaps that analogy is better suited for another instrument, the viola da gamba. Switching between two viols (one dating from 1550, the other 1697), Savall makes solo Baroque works by Bach, Marin Marais, and Sainte-Colombe literally sing. As the gambist-conductor explains in the liner notes, a debate hit the music world in the 17th century that pitted melodic playing versus harmony. Though no conclusions were agreed upon, it's fascinating to hear the diverse styles--Italian versus French, melodic versus harmonic, etc.--that Savall presents us. His playing is soulful and thoughtful, never rushed, and the recorded sound intimate and precise. One of Savall's best discs (no small feat!) and a must-have for early-music lovers. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jordi Savall is God.......2005-03-17

It's been said before, but it deserves to be said again.

5 out of 5 stars Viola da Gamba at its best.......2003-04-14

Jordi Savall is a player of rare sensitivity and virtuosity. This CD of solo works for the viola da gamba is an encylopedia of gamba styles and a treasure chest of baroque compositions. From start to finish this CD is riveting, the beauty of his playing and the compositions is awe inspiring. The recording is excellent and the liner notes are informative. Savall's playing of Maris is heartrending, and his interpretation of movements from the Bach cello suites is revelatory. This CD is a great introduction to the viola da gamba as well as a treasure trove for any gamba fan.

5 out of 5 stars The true "human voice" of the baroque.......2000-10-19

As always in J.Savall, the reconstruction of the baroque sounds & spirit is perfect. This time the music really succeds in filling the XXI century listener with the tortured spirit of the XVI century. A last recomendation, it is a record to be listened to in the dark.

4 out of 5 stars Cellophane - Fine 3rd Album!.......2005-01-11

Please note that this review refers to a release of the "Cellophane" album with 12 different bonus-tracks ( Not the "Mixed Bag" album )

The Troggs of the 1960's can hardly be called an album's band. Nevertheless they did release some pretty solid albums for Fontana / Page One in the sixties. Cellophane from 1967, which was their third, contains the classic single "Love is All Around" and other great Reg Presley compositions like "All of the Time", "It's Snowing" and "My Lady". Reg Presley had/has the rare skill of being capeable of writing catchy rockers as well as memorable ballads. This CD release gives fine examples of both types.
The overall impression of the album, compared to their previous"Trogglodynamite", is that it's more quiet and melodic.

The bonus tracks are A's and B-sides of singles released during 1969-70; none of them were big hits and some of them are pretty obscure. Only few of them are up to the standards of the original album's best songs. Still tracks like "I Don't Know Why", "Easy Lovin'", "The Raver" and "Anything For You" are fine additions to a very good album.

5 out of 5 stars Two great (somewhat) rare gems by the Troggs........2001-07-05

First I want to start this review by saying this is original releases, nothing re-done here. This two-fer is the 3rd and 4th albums by the Troggs, released in 1967 and 1968 respectively. Some of the songs on both albums are in Stereo, some are in mono. 24 great songs.

The Cellophane album is (for the most part) 3 guitars and drums pure rock, occasional flute. pretty basic for 1967, but not EVERY group would go psychedelic in 1966-67. The only ones that even resemble flower power or Psychedelic are the last 3-4 songs on the album. One of those songs being the top 40 hit "Love Is All Around" besides the song just mentioned, There is a melodic song or two on here, "Its Showing" is one of them.

The first few songs are pretty basic pop/rock, except "Butterflies And Bees" which has a modern jazz/pop sound. a great song and a change for the mostly raw and grungy 60s rock Sound the Troggs are known for.

Is this album good? yes, its one of their best. highlights on this album, "Little Red Donkey", "Butterflies And Bees", "All of The Time", "Somewhere My Girl Is Waiting", "My Lady", and of course "Love Is All Around". Was this the Troggs idea of, "All You Need Is Love"? or a "boy loves girl" song, maybe a little of both.

Now, the album Mixed Bag is another story, it still has the Troggs signature of the basic rock/pop sound, but there is more psychedlic songs on this album, it was 1968 after all.

The first song "Surprise, Surprise, is very good. One of those hitting the snare and Tom Tom and banging the piano songs. "Say Darlin" is very Troggs sounding in Lyric and music style.

Why wasnt "Purple Shades" a hit in the U.S.? talk about your lost hit single, great song. The Psychedelic songs? thats where "Maybe The Madman" comes in, and maybe a hint of Psychedelic on a few others. I'm wondering why this album is not getting more recognition! is this a Concept album? in a way yes, this is a very good album, maybe even their best. (Their first album from 1966 was great too).

One of the songs on this album called "Off The Record" is some Tom foolery in the studio, its fun. Another melodic song on here is "Theres something about you". No hit singles on here, from America that is. Probably a UK hit or two on here. The highlights are, Surprise,Surprise, Say Darlin, Purple Shades, Heads Or Tails, Hip Hip Hooray, Maybe The Madman", We Waited For Someone.

Get it now, these sort of releases dont always wait around to be bought.

...I don't know how these albums didnt get re-released sooner, maybe they were, I never saw them till I saw this 2-fer CD release. Buy it.
