Man of Constant Sorrow

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Ralph Stanley's half-century-long career received a nice boost late in 2000 with the release of Joel and Ethan Coen's movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The film prominently featured three tunes from the Stanley repertoire, including the title tune of this stellar anthology (although it's not Stanley's version that's featured in the film). Another is the hillbilly lament "Oh Death," a traditional song that perfectly suits Stanley's high, wavering, mournful voice. Focusing on Stanley's post-Stanley Brothers career, this set serves as a fine introduction to his estimable body of work, including gems like "Goin' Up Home to Live in Green Pastures"--as pretty a country gospel tune as has ever been recorded--"Hard Times," and "Old Richmond Prison." It's an altogether satisfying collection that leaves the listener wanting more. --Gregory McNamee

The (over)production here is a bit slick -- the giddy fiddle and animatronic banjo combo make me a little queasy on some of the songs. Stanley vibrates his nasal septum like a sax reed. If your scrotum needs tightening, this will do it.

5 out of 5 stars Man this one kicks!.......2002-10-24

Here I am only half way through the CD and motivated enough to write such a positive review! This album kicks!

4 out of 5 stars Scary Good.......2002-05-17

It was only a matter of time before greater America woke up to Bluegrass music, the big-beat music with no drums that's been in our backyard for generations.

Ralph Stanley sings songs of sorrow and he means it; I think the scary feeling many listeners talk about comes from Stanley hitting home, a deadeye bullseye on some archetypical fears.

Great fiddle playing, too.

5 out of 5 stars This is your chance to get to know the Great Ralph Stanley.......2001-08-12

As a result of "O Brother Where Art Thou?", Ralph Stanley is finally reaching reknown beyond bluegrass fans. Hard core bluegrass fans have known for decades that Ralph Stanley is the premier male mountain singer....this collection will let everyone else know that Stanely is a great singer...period! This collection is a mini-retrospective of Stanley's solo work during the seventies. I'm sorry I missed these songs when they were originally issued because this is bone-chilling, hair-raising mountain singing. Every cut on this CD is a gem; the standout being "Old Richmond Prison," a paen to regret, loneliness and isolation that'll convert you for sure.

5 out of 5 stars He's one of a kind.......2000-10-12

Even if i did not used to take flute lessons from Mr. Chris, i would still be raving about this CD. A beautiful blend of the international music that has come to define his most well known style of playing, this recording is a must have. Having grown up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but spent the last number of years living in Baltimore, Mr. Chris manages to combine the best of both worlds. From traditional Cape Breton reels to Scottish laments to the French music of Quebec and finally to the mastery of the great Turlough O'Carolan, he covers it all, leaving nothing untouched. He is supported by fellow Helicon member Robin Bullock (also an incredible soloist), as well as Ann Marie Morgan, and Pete Sutherland, and together they are brilliant. My favorite track is Rochester Schottische, but that may be because that is the first piece that Mr. Chris ever taught me. He is an incredible teacher, person, and musician, and this CD exemplifies this!

      3 out of 5 stars eclectic collection.......2007-03-08

What we have here is an eclectic collection,a grab-bag,something for just about anyone...And,given the various performances, there is as much drek as there is gold...Jay Ungar(of Ashokan Farewell fame)contributes several cuts, all of which are gems...John Sebastian(of the Lovin'Spoonful)on the other hand drops a few bombs ,his contributions weighing down the whole, and serving as an unwelcome contrast to the other, better performances...Ungar stays within his genre, which is one reason why he consistently delivers big, while Sebastian, adrift since his last big splash, the theme song from the 1970s teevee sitcom"Welcome Back Kotter",attempts REAL folk(as opposed to the pop folk-rock which he did better when he was lead writer and singer of the spoonful, back in the swinging sixties),and is not quite up to the task...Eric Weissberg's contributions are stellar, while the Blakes(Norman & Nancy)are probably an aquired taste...

      4 out of 5 stars First-rate roots music - and cheap!.......2004-05-08

This was a most pleasant find among the bargain CD's at my local Barnes and Noble. A joint project of budget label St. Clair and Celtic/world label Shanachie, it brings together an impressive stable of musicians from the worlds of folk, country, Celtic and New Age. Indeed, the music (instrumental arrangements of all-traditional tunes) is relatively low-key and respectfully treated, but the performances are perfectly executed - what you would expect from folks like Jay Unger and Molly Mason (of "Ashokan Farewell" fame), John Sebastian, Norman and Nancy Blake, Eric Weissberg, Celtic virtuosi Brian Keane and John Whelan, and others. This is a satisfying and relaxing album, easily worth more than its budget price.

      3 out of 5 stars 1/2 Stars...Somber, Reflective Instrumental Music.......2002-10-21

I purchased this CD for several reasons. One, I enjoy music that has roots deep in our country's history. Two, There were a number of recognizable names here: John Sebastian, Brian Keane, Norman and Nancy Blake, Bill Keith and Tony Trischka. Three, well...it was cheap. I listen to the first track and it's a very pleasant--if not somber--fiddle-dominated piece. It reminded me of the PBS "Civil War" soundtrack. No surprise, Jay Ungar, who played fiddle on and composed the Grammy-winning "Ashokan Farewell" for that soundtrack, plays on this track along with his wife Molly Mason. In fact, they also appear on "Midnight on the Water," "Seneca Square Dance" and "When First Unto This Country."

The opening track sets the tone for much of the album. Most of the songs (all instrumentals) are quiet, reflective pieces. If you were expecting this to be a collection of bluegrass songs like those found on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (as I was), you'll be disappointed. While many of these are bluegrass songs, they are not performed as such. The only track performed in a bluegrass style is the Bill Keith-Tony Trischka-Eric Weisberg interpretation of "Footprints in the Snow."

While most of these tracks feature the guitar and/or fiddle as the lead instrument, Stacy Phillips plays Dobro on "Sweet Sunny South," Lorraine Lee adds dulcimer to "Shady Grove," John Whelan plays button accordian on "When First Unto This Country," and John Sebastian adds harmonica to "Wagoner's Land."

This is pleasant background music, the kind you want to have playing on a rainy day to help dissolve the stress of the day. And sometimes that's all you should ask a piece of music to do.

      2 out of 5 stars "O Brother" Fans Beware!.......2002-07-12

Despite the clever packaging, this CD was NOT produced by the folks behind "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

As it claims, this CD does contain original recordings of many of the songs on the "O Brother" soundtrack. If you're looking for the genuine article, this is it.

However, as is common with recordings this old, many of the originals were made by semi-professionals with primitive recording technology. As a result, these "originals" do not have the clarity, the warmth, or the production values of the masterful performances on "O Brother" and the companion live album "Down from the Mountain." If you're looking for music that sounds like those two albums, try Gillian Welch's "Revival" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun for the O Brother, Where Art Thou? craze.......2002-07-08

This cd is a wonderful collection of earlier recordings of music from the movie or similar American "roots music" -- don't you love the new labels for old music :-) Some of the music is easily obtainable, some we should thank Holland for sending back to us. Contents:
      1. I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow - the Stanley Brothers

Afficiadoes may complain that the remastering has gone too far in removing surface sound on some tracks - a minor flaw. Those who don't recognize most the artists names, probably should stick to the sound track and be introduced to the older versions more slowly.

5 out of 5 stars original/vintage versions of songs from the soundtrack.......2002-06-17

Here are many of the songs from the "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "Down from the Mountain" CDs, performed either by the original artists or in vintage renditions, as well as other great songs in the "roots and blues" vein. An interesting and enjoyable comparison/companion to the soundtrack albums.
