Lucky Man

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Through this song cycle of love's salvation, Hal Ketchum tries to renew the commercial success he enjoyed a decade ago with "Small Town Saturday Night" without sacrificing the critical respect he earned with his previous release, Awaiting Redemption. The plainspoken simplicity and heartfelt sincerity of "You Can't Go Back" and "Richest Man in Texas" bring out the best in Ketchum's reedy tenor, while overblown duets with Dolly Parton ("Two of the Lucky Ones") and Lisa Brokop ("Keep Mom & Dad in Love") succumb to schmaltz. The sound is generally slicker and sweeter than one might expect from producer Rodney Crowell, though Ketchum's soulful reading of a pair of Crowell originals, "Loving You Makes Me a Better Man" and "Dreams of Martina," reflects an artistic kinship. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2007-02-12

For a relaxing afternoon, rainy day, or just chillin, this cd is great. There's a good mixture of music, from moving your feet, to cuddling with someone special. I love it.

3 out of 5 stars Another hot one!.......2006-09-05

I really enjoyed this cd a lot. All the cool, smooth jazz sounds are here. My personal faves are "You Make Me Smile" (this song will!) & "Faces of the Heart" (GH theme). This is a must have for every DK fan or any lover of great instrumental sounds. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This Album a "Must Have".......2004-12-29

Dave Koz is the definitive artist for smooth jazz. The cut "You Make Me Smile" does just what the title says. "Tender Is the Night" shows how to take a beutiful ballad and turn it into the smoothest of smooth.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky Man When I First Heard Koz.......2003-11-23

I remember travelling the Connecticut countryside listening to CD101.9 out of NYC when the announcer played the title cut "Lucky Man." I was immediately hooked. I went out and bought the CD. Dave Koz's ballads top the charts in sensuality, and are unmistakebly 5 star quality. "Tender Is the Night" is another one of my personal favorites from the CD. Sometimes when I hear Tender is the Night, I drift into quiet reverie and enjoy every minute of it. THis CD is spectacular. The two aforementioned songs a true jazz connoisseur will savor. If you don't have this CD, please treat yourself to this tasteful listening enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars Wide variety of songs, many guests artists.......2003-06-27

Koz's second CD Lucky Man is not as good as his first, but there are still many good songs on this CD. The second song, "You Make Me Smile," is one of the coolest smooth jazz songs I've ever heard, because of the numerous chord changes. I also love the uplifting, energetic "Saxman," which features many guest musicians, such as Maceo Parker on alto sax and Tower of Power's "Doc" Kupka on bari sax. "After Dark" is also a cool sounding, slow funk tune that's loaded with percussion. This CD is a melting pot of peppy, funk songs and slow ballads with many guest musicians, and Dave has proven that he is one of the greatest "Saxmen" in the world.

After playing the haunting organ intro to the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun," Alan Price went solo and carved himself a niche (in England, at least) as a pop craftsman. For many, his most enduring contribution has been this soundtrack to Lindsay Anderson's allegorical 1973 film about a coffee salesman. Price's characteristic keyboard flourishes are all over tracks like "Pastoral" and "Arrival," while the biting wit of "Poor People" and "Sell Sell" never once overshadows the innate tunefulness of the songs. Even if you've never seen the movie, Price's delightful and memorable score is highly recommended. --Dan Epstein

Finally, the soundtrack from the film starring Malcolm McDowell from 1973 that turned out to be the best 15 minutes of fame for Alan Price (Of the Animals). Available for the first time on CD.

5 out of 5 stars "When no one can tempt you with heaven or hell- You'll be a lucky man!".......2007-03-20

"O Lucky Man!" (1973), directed by Lindsay Anderson (with Ralph Richardson, Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren) is a constant source of joy when I watch it again and again. Off I go with Mick Travis (McDowell) in his crazy surreal journey up and down, back and forth, "around the world in circles" along with the Alan Price's band that provide the music commentaries in the traditions of a Greek Chorus or Brecht's Theater. I love his songs to the film very much. It is possibly the best use of a rock soundtrack in a film. I am a proud CD owner and I listen to it constantly - in my car, at work, while exercising. It is short; ten songs only last for 25 minutes but what the minutes they are. Each song, every note and each word feel so perfectly simple and so joyously cool that you can't forget them. For many years, after I saw the film for the first time, I used to sing to myself from time to time, especially if I was sad or confused or would face the important and not easy decisions:

"Everyone is going through changes
No one knows what's going on.
And everybody changes places
But the world still carries on." -
and the song would always make me feel better. Eventually, it has become the important part of my life philosophy.

The most famous and deservingly so is the title song, "O Lucky Man" which was presented in the movie not once but two times, in the opening scene and in the final one. The second rendition is perhaps the best track on the CD, the most memorable scene in the movie and the best performance by Alan Price. I can go on forever about the disc, the songs, their melodies and the lyrics but it is better to hear them once than to try to describe them. They are all wonderful, as much as the film is and the film would definitely not be the same without Alan Price, his band and his songs and instrumental compositions for the film ("Pastoral", "Arrival"). I just want to name the songs and their lyrics:

"O Lucky Man!":
If you have a friend on whom you think you can rely -
You are a lucky man!
If you've found the reason to live on and not to die -
You are a lucky man!

"Poor people":
Someone's got to win in the human race-
If it isn't you, then it has to be me.

"Sell, sell"
Running here, running there
Keep it moving, sonny, don't despair
Because the next one will be, the next one will be, the next one will be, the best one of the year

"Look over your shoulder"
When everything in life seems just as it should be
At last success seems just around the door
Don't forget boy
Look over your shoulder
'Cause things don't stay the same forever more

"Justice":
We all want justice but you got to have the money to buy it
You'd have to be a fool to close your eyes and deny it

"My Town":
Down on the corner of the street
Where I was born we used to meet
And sing the old songs
We called them dole songs

"Changes":
Love must always change to sorrow
And everyone must play the game,
Here today and gone tomorrow-
But the world goes on the same.

And that's what you may learn in the end of your journey to the top of the stairs, to the success:
"Takers and fakers and talkers won't tell you.
Teachers and preachers will just buy and sell you.
When no one can tempt you with heaven or hell-
You'll be a lucky man!"

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW!!!.......2006-06-28

Glad to see this is finally available (again). It was on CD a number of years ago, only to disappear. I got really lucky when I bought it from a music warehouse I had been doing business with for 20 years. I bought 2 CD's (a Leonard Cohen and a Van Morrison one), and he had a bunch of cutout copies of this, and he sent me it for free! Despite that, if I had to pay 18 bucks for this CD, would I do it? Hell, yes! Every song on it is a gem. Even having 2 different versions of O Lucky Man! is excellent, as they are vastly different interpretations (the 2nd one that closes the album is the most rousing one). This album could stand on its own even if it wasn't a soundtrack (by the way, the film is fantastic as well). I play this CD a lot. It's one of the best soundtrack albums ever. It's Alan Price's most famous work (aside from his Animals work and his cameo in Dylan's Don't Look Back), and it's wonderful everytime you hear it. Buy it now before it goes out of print again. And see the movie too!

5 out of 5 stars Quality Album.......2006-03-19

I consider Alan Price amongst one of the most truely talented singers, song writers etc. O Lucky Man is a great album and show cases some of his finest work. A true classic. What the seventies was all about.

2 out of 5 stars Montrose version of "Lucky Man" much better.......2003-12-11

I searched for years to find the Montrose version of Alan Price's "A Lucky Man", which is not to be confused with the ELP song that is much more famous. It's on "Warner Brothers Presents Montrose", and it is inspiring, uplifting, fist in the air good. The lyrics give you a chill:

"If you have a friend on whom you think you can rely you are a lucky man,
If you have a reason to live on and not to die you are lucky man,
Preachers and poets and scholars don't know it,
Temples and statues and steeples won't show it,
If you've got the secret just try not to blow it,
Stay a lucky man, a lucky man."

5 out of 5 stars brilliant!.......2003-09-22

I caught the movie, O Lucky Man! on television years and years ago, and never knew the actual title. The funny thing was, I only caught a total of fifteen minutes of it. I never forgot it. I was totally unaware of the "trilogy", and of the beautiful soundtrack, until I tried to buy all three movies at the same time for different reasons. If you don't know, "If", "O Lucky Man", and "Brittania Hospital" are the movies, all great. When I saw this movie in total, the first thing that caught me was Alan Price. Not the music, his face. The brilliant stroke was just to have him in it. You are not just listening to music while watching something else. It's Alan Price singing and playing. And he is affecting. There's is something sly, and smart-assed, in his face and lyrics. This sounds like a rave for the movie, which is how I came by it, but the music itself, without aid at all, is so deft and smart in it's own right, that it really only adds to it to see it performed. Every line, from beginning to end, is like Price himself. Most notably, "Look over your shoulder" affects me the most. Musically, it is very sly and very deft. Try to Play it. Lyrically, it is the perfect note for the soundtrack itself. The beginning is all catch-phrases. Happy stuff. And out rolls the happy lines "...there's always someone coming after you". This is, in my opinion, the best that the early seventies had to offer. I agree with the 9/11 stuff, but I think it still belongs in its era. Phil Ochs had already gotten there himself, at a cost to himself, but only Alan Price could have written such great music to match a film like that. Also quite notable are "Justice", a personal favourite, and "changes", a parody of a song that I could not get out of my head for years. I still remember snatches at Baptist churches with my parents and now I only remember Alan's lines, thankfully.
Not forgetting, "my home town", simple but great. "Poor People". very mean to say that poor people just don't understand the way things really work. Half of the album is an instruction book in how to rise above, and forget, the working class. But it is all so clever, and the main theme restates it. It has an open interpretation as well, not my favourite, musically. If you are a fan of movies, it is an uncommon soundtrack. If you are a fan of the seventies, well, who knows? It is the cream of the crop, in my opinion. If you are a music fan or a musician, it is absolutely essential that you buy this album right now and learn from it. By the way, I am going to buy it right now. I only wish there was more of it. But the tracks on it are the crucial ones that you hear(and see) in the movie. Alan Price is an amazing composer and singer(and musician).

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love's all Hal sings to.......2002-07-21

Man this guy is good.

Since Hal Ketchum's first record on the Watermelon label many years ago, he's been singing about love and where it's leading. Through the years, that destination's not always been clear, though now, like a man twice redeemed and this time for good, he offers us this excellent record rich with the theme of love's many blessings.

Throughout this record Ketchum shows the growth that's made his later works so consistently good -- high-caliber songwriting, a unique voice, and enough honest style and delivery to make the common extraordinary. "The Richest Man in Texas," the album's best song, sets this out plainly, with nearly sentimental lyrics that Ketchum elevates with his perfect delivery.

The remaining songs are equally well-crafted, with 2 notable exceptions. The record includes not one but two duets, one with Dolly Parton and the other with Lisa Brokop, and they're simply awful. Out of place, they seem like last minute efforts to make the record more radio-friendly, and they're decided stinkers.

Ketchum's so consistently good it's hard not to crave some luck for him to return to the commercial success he had with his first two major releases, though that doesn't seem meant to be. Still, Ketchum appears content to show his growth. 15 years ago he sang that love's a word far better left unsaid. Today, he's less poetic and more sincere, proof if we needed it that our best singer/songwriters grow with age, and to have 10 songs about love from someone of Ketchum's level is a stroke of luck indeed.

5 out of 5 stars He's Baaack.......2002-01-06

Wow! I am already incredibly impressed. Man, I am so glad to see that he has an album that will send him back to the top of the charts where he belongs.

Take a listen to "Don't Let Go" and the duet with Dolly Parton "Two of the Lucky Ones" if you don't believe that Hal Ketchum is one of the most talented artists of our time. Thank goodness for Rodney Crowell's (the producer of this album) insight and expertise to perfectly blend the 'radio friendly' songs with the trademark Hal Ketchum without losing an ounce of the soul and essence that we have all come to know and love as Hal Ketchum.

I highly recommend this album to any music fan, and it is an essential part of any Hal Ketchum fan's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for tried and true Hal fans.......2001-12-07

I am a longtime fan of Hal Ketchum, but this CD will delight even those listeners who are not as devoted as I am. I keep listening to this CD over and over again! From the very first song, "You're Everything," you are grabbed and find yourself humming along. "You Can't Go Back" will get your toe tapping and fingers snapping, and "Don't Let Go," has the influence of swing behind it. The songs are upbeat and catchy. The downside to this CD is the two duets. Dolly Parton sounds off-tune most of the time and Lisa Brokop's voice was never a favorite to begin with. He would be better off to keep it a solo act next time or find someone who is more compatible to his vocal style. Overall though, a great buy. You will keep this one close at hand and listen to it often!

4 out of 5 stars Fresh and Poignant.......2001-10-04

After the critically acclaimed, "Awaiting Redemption," I was waiting to see what Hal would have to offer next. This collection (produced by Rodney Crowell) is full of great songs penned by Hal and several other talented writers. Opening the set with the strong and melodic "(She's Something) You're Everything," Hal moves from tune to tune with mastery. Other strong cuts are: "That's How Much you Mean To Me," "Loving You Makes Me A Better Man," " Dreams of Martina," "Two Of The Lucky Ones (with Dolly)," and "Livin' Life Lovin' You." The gems in this collection that stand out for their artistic value are the Ketchum penned "She's Still In Love," "Richest Man In Texas," which is true to Hal's earliest writing style and more reminiscent of the tunes on "Sure Love", and the deeply moving "She Is," penned for his beautiful wife, Gina. The stinker in the collection is the out-of-place remake of Roy Hamilton's 1958 pop hit, "Don't Let Go."

Hal's musical influence continues to grow in the Americana music industry as does his songwriting talents; ever changing. I don't believe his intentions are to garner radio airplay as much as to turn out the best songs his pen can create. This is where he finds success and satisfaction!

4 out of 5 stars Filled with a few gems.......2001-09-29

I think this is Hal's best album in quite awhile. I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers in that I don't think he is trying so hard for radio airplay. I think that Rodney Crowell has produced a very good selection of songs. Two of the best are his own, Dreams of Martina and Loving You Makes Me a Better Man. True, not all 12 songs are masterpieces but without question it is filled with some memorable songs and strong vocals from Hal.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

        3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Verve's best B-side sandwhiched between two classics........2001-01-09

Is this single worth buying for one new song? Yes it is, "Never Wanna See You Cry" is of the b-sides I've heard of The Verve, thier best. The lyrics are similar to "The Drugs Don't Work" and the music has the classic string arrangment sound that The Verve established on "Urban Hymns". I don't think I need to discuss, "Lucky Man" and "History". If you haven't heard them then you need to catch up. This single could be the best proof of The Verve's brilliance.

5 out of 5 stars Ok, so there's only one new track.......2000-08-14

History is off of A Northern Soul, and Lucky Man is off of Urban Hymns. Both are beautiful tracks, but you can get em on the albums with a whole bunch of other tracks.

        So why get this?

Never Wanna See You Cry is incredible in that deep, slightly dark way. The strings in the beginning are vaguely reminiscient to Pachebel Canon. Richard's vocals float over the orchestral tone, and twist the heart with just enough sentimentality. If you don't like the Verve's ballads, you probably shouldn't get this, but if you do, it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars AB FAB Song.......1998-10-01

It took me many many moons to track this song down after hearing it on MTV Biorhythms on Steven Tyler. Many calls to CD stores and radio stations turned up nothing, leading me to believe that this song is not nearly as well known as it should be. The DJ that finally figured it out for me summed it up perfectly when she stated that if I didn't own this CD, it would be a "big mistake".

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14

This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.

Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.

Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.

Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.
