Amazon.com essential recording
Kris Kristofferson didn't need to land a helicopter on Johnny Cash's lawn to get his attention. The genius of his early songs would have won out. In 1970 no one in Nashville, or anywhere else for that matter, was writing with such effortless, imaginative wisdom. It wasn't enough that he had penned "Me and Bobbie McGee," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "For the Good Times"; Kristofferson had to put them all on his debut, and toss in even more provocative story songs like the mythic "To Beat the Devil" and the scabrous "The Law Is for Protection of the People." Ranging from the absurd "The Junkie and the Juicehead, Minus Me"--which Cash later recorded--to the sublime "Shadows of Her Mind," the four new bonus tracks don't enhance or detract from the original album's legacy. Song for song, the record bristles with a kind of lyrical innovation and urgent quest for meaning that country music had never known, and likely won't again.

Hollywood loved this story so much they remade it every 20 years or so for much of the 20th century; Barbra Streisand imbued it with so much forceful persona in 1976 that they haven't touched it since. The romantic/musical pairing of Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (chosen when no less than Elvis Presley turned the role down) may have been one of the era's strangest but, anchored by Streisand's elegant, Oscar-winning hit theme "Evergreen," it nonetheless yielded the biggest-selling album of the singer's career to date. That neither star is particularly convincing as rock icons--particularly Her Divaness--seems beyond the point of this fable. Instead, both stars take the opportunity to stretch outside their usual personas a bit, Streisand with the R&B teaser "Queen Bee" and confessional "Woman of the Moon," Kristofferson on rousing, theatrical fare like "Watch Closely Now" and "Hellacious Acres." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
"Ageless and evergreen".......2007-06-25
Released in 1976, this album was not only the new Barbra Streisand album, but it was also a Kris Kristofferson release, as well as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. However, like many people who bought this wildly successful release, I bought it for Barbra Streisand. I have no opinion on the Kristofferson tracks since I always skip over them, but Barbra's recordings make this one of her greatest albums
"Queen Bee" is a funky, brilliantly sung song with some great metaphors comparing a woman to certain insects. Very catchy and one of my favorite tracks. It gets a grade of: A
"Everything" is a pretty song that is brought down by some horrible lyrics ("I'd cure the cold and the traffic jam/If there were floods, I'd give a dam"). Otherwise, this music and the singing make it pretty moving. B
"Lost Inside of You," a duet with Kristofferson, is a track that should work, oozing with chemistry, but doesn't. Barbra's solo version, available elsewhere, is far superior to this forgettable track, which needless to say is my least favorite. C-
"Evergreen," the most successful song on here, as well as one of Barbra's signature tunes, is rather simple but very beautiful. With the melody composed by Streisand herself, they complement the poetic lyrics like a glove, and are certain to give the "Streisand chills." A
"The Woman in the Moon," which comes at a crucial point in the movie, is actually a very moving song, mostly because of Barbra's flawless interpretation. B+
"I Believe in Love" is a decent song, but it just doesn't seem like Barbra seems comfortable with it. She oversings at certain points where restraint is necessary, and the fast singing is just distracting at points. B-
"With One More Look at You/Watch Closely Now" also comes at a crucial point in the movie, and is an incredibly stunning and emotional recording. It almost sits up there is prestige as "Evergreen," but is perhaps a tad overlong. A-
As for the reprise of "Evergreen," it still sounds nice, with some other male vocals that are actually effective this time around, but most people won't need to hear it. C+
Despite the fact that "Evergreen" gets all the attention on this CD, most of the other tracks are worthy of mention as well. If you skip through all of the Kristofferson tracks, this album is a rich, satisfying way to pass the time. As for the related movie, well, the less said the better.
A Star is Born.......2007-06-13
I loved this when I bought it in 1976 LP version, and know I have it again! I listen to it every day, it brings back so many memories.
classic.......2007-05-18
This CD and movie seems to generate a lot of controversy...I don't really know why. It WAS a good movie..and I feel it's a great soundtrack...one I never tire of listening to. I remember being a teenager..a young one.. and always loving Babs... but seeing this album cover was mesmerizingly sexy to my young libido! I think Kris and Barbra had great screen chemistry..and there is a lovely simmering sensual quality to all of her acting and singing. And I agree..she does a great comic turn, as well! I almost always cry during the love songs on this CD. Lisa in CT

This item was mixed in, and others as well, with what, were MOSTLY DVDs, movies, I thought, I was buying, the movie. Instead, a got, a music CD. I kept it, because I felt, stupid, for making this mistake, but on 2nd thought, the fault is at LEAST half yours for that policy of mxing DVDs with CDs. No, Im not a happy camper, but understand, I will continue doing business, through Amazon. I, by and large, like buying though you, but you MIGHT consider not, mixing products, in the future...Thank you
Just as I remembered.......2007-01-09
I had always had a copy of the record album but it was great to finally get the CD. I can now listen to it and re live the music as I drive. One of my favourite musicals. Barbara Striesand has the BEST voice, and Kris doesn't do too bad either. Great CD, great DVD!! A must have..

Though Kris Kristofferson has long seemed ageless, the approach of his 70th birthday plainly has the songwriter looking back, taking stock and coming to terms with his legacy and his mortality. The result is his most consistently compelling release in decades, as well as his most stripped-to-the-bone intimate. The spare production by bassist Don Was captures Kristofferson in all his rough-edged, plain-spoken, and big-hearted glory, with occasional support from guitarist (and longtime Kristofferson compatriot) Stephen Bruton and drummer Jim Keltner putting the focus on songs that combine the poetic grace of Kristofferson's early classics with a conviction that has grown stronger with the passing years. "Wild Americans" offers a roll call of outspoken heroes--from American Indian activist John Trudell to country maverick Steve Earle--while "In the News" lambastes the very concept of a holy war. Yet it's the spiritual side of Kristofferson that really touches the soul, from a father's wonder at the "Holy Creation" of his children's birth to the bittersweet benediction of "Thank You for a Life." With the title cut, "The Last Thing to Go," "The Show Goes On," and "Final Attraction," he takes a look back at the life of a troubadour and decides that, for all the bumps, this road has been one of incomparable rewards. The listener shares the riches. --Don McLeese
Album Description
Kris Kristofferson has always identified himself first and foremost as a writer, and true writers know that what works best is giving a piece of themselves to the listener. With his latest album, This Old Road, Kristofferson lays a chunk of his own soul on every track. This beautifully sparse recording, puts an emphasis on his fine lyrics and distinctive voice by featuring Kristofferson, his guitar, and harmonica. The album is so intimate it makes the listener feel as if they are sitting in Kristofferson's living room while he picks and sings just for them.

Kris is a contemporary - his songs reflect the way we feel at this stage in our lives. The sadness and the joy .....
Late In The Day, A Diamond.......2007-06-19
One can only hope that some of the multitude who purchase the latest flavor of the moment will have the good fortune and discernment to some day come to this magnificent testament and realize that only a relatively few albums are truly timeless and worthy of one's attention and time, again and again and again.
Kris Rocks.......2007-06-08
I've been a fan since I was kid, my mom listening to Kristofferson while cleaning the house in the summer with the doors and windows wide open, a cool breeze blowing in, and us kids (there were six of us) laying on our bare bellies in front of the speakers.
Kristofferson is one of the best singers/songwriters in American history and this is one of his best albums.

Saw Kris a few times in concert last year and he sang a lot of the songs on this CD. I didn't give him 4 stars because Kris really is not the best singer, but, boy, these are the best songs!

this is the song in my mind that was one of kris kristoffersons best the story he tells people can relate to no matter what decade or era.people always seem to forget what is important in life .i like to listen to this song when i get caught up in life.
A performer central in folksong tradition.......2007-01-09
Kris Kristofferson is a central pillar in the american folksong tradition. In his deep, fulltoning voice he sings his meaningful texts in a way to creep into your heart. I find his performances ideal, whether I drive tru long nights, or I caress my woman in front of the fireplace. They are songs to be glad to listen to, even if the text may be earnest enough.
Good compilation from a great songwriter.......2006-11-07
If you are a Kris Kristofferson fan, you will enjoy this collection of Kris singing his many hits, ost of which were covered by other singers.
Purchased in preparation for attending a live concert.......2006-07-19
This CD was a terrific, comprehensive review of Kris's most famous songs. It turned out to be far better then the live concert I attended. Our aging performers may drive us to this option more and more.
Ageless classics by a classic artist .......2006-06-04
If singer-songwriter-actor Kris Kristofferson has been underrated as a singer, he's been compensated as a master lyricist with words that resonate, and some of the tracks on this 18-disc CD serve up ample justification. In this compilation, though, Kristofferson sings his own songs that were a springboard to gold status for other singers. Among them: the Janis Joplin-ID'd but Kristofferson-penned "Me and Bobby McGee;" "Help Me Make It Through The Night," a million-seller for the late Sammi Smith; "For the Good Times," a comeback hit for Ray Price; and "Nobody Wins," a song of love that has died and its injured left with nothing but the challenge to move on (and never performed with such stirring feeling than by Lynn Anderson). Along with those, Kristofferson unleashes the song that garnered him his first public acknowledgement as a writer, "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," first performed (and probably never since topped) by the late Johnny Cash, and another of his own mega-hits, "Why Me." As a performer, Kristofferson may never have been afforded his appropriate due - and that's unfortunate. As a writer, though, there's little room to argue that he deservantly is revered as one of his industry's most gifted artists. And having his voice behind his powerful words makes this CD a worthy buy and listen, and it begs the question how its author can feel so much. Kristofferson, truly an amazing and powerfully moving force.

Amazon.com essential recording
Me and Bobbie McGee technically marks Kris Kristofferson's recording debut. But that collection (originally released in 1970 under the name Kristofferson and rereleased a year later after Janis Joplin hit with what became the title track) feels like an intro to an accomplished songwriter. This 1971 set is, in many ways, the man's opening salvo as a recording artist. Surrounded by a crew of Nashville cats, Kristofferson molds together a 10-song sophomore outing that, while not as hits-laden as its predecessor, is more cohesive. Highlights include two of the songsmith's loveliest ballads ("Loving Her Was Easier" and "When I Loved Her"), an elegy for Joplin ("Epitaph"), and what could stand for the then nascent outlaw nation's national anthem ("The Pilgrim, Chapter 33"). --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Sure come a long way from home..........2007-03-09
Alright. Now you've made it. You've flown helicopters, swept floors, tended bar, all to make ends meet while you peddled your songs. You got some hits (Help Me Make It Through The Night), some misses (Vietnam Blues) and when the hits came more often than the misses, you got to make your own album (Kristofferson).
Now you get to top that. "Silver Tongued Devil" does. Some say he's your double, some even say you're the same. Whatever, whichever, it's as good a song as you've written. They say you should write about what you know. If that is the case, I'd say you have quite a bit of material in the same vein. I like "Jody and the Kid". Sad song, but there is a ray of hope in it too. "Breakdown" is another song that could be autobiographical. A lot of tough gigs, huh? How about "Epitaph"? That about Joplin? And "Pilgrim Chapter 33". Mister, you sure got a lot of stories stashed in that guitar case.
p.s. This album is practically the soundtrack to Kris' film, "Cisco Pike". A good movie and the songs fit the story well. Check it out.
Silver Tongued Devil - KK review.......2007-01-10
This was the first KK album I ever heard back when it was originally released - I was then hooked on KK. Love his way of singing. When my original record and cassette wore out had to replace it with the CD just purchased.

This is an older cd of Kris Kristoffersons and I highly recommend it. You don't see much of him now but he is one of the best singer/song writters. ;-)

The Essential Kristofferson.......2006-06-27
For any Kristofferson fan, this is Kris in his earlier years with a better voice and a slightly different style. Refreshing.
Kris Kristofferson.......2006-03-11
Kris Kristofferson is a capricorn, he ate organic food. Well maybe, maybe not. He might not be as well known or revered to casual fans as Johnny Cash or the others, but oh how does he deserve to be. After having his demo tapes ignored by Johnny Cash (who he handed them to as he worked at the same label as Johnny as a janitor), he did what any normal, logical person would do and land a helicopter on Johnny's property and play his tapes for him TO MAKE SURE that Johnny heard them. The first song on the tape was Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, which Johnny covered and as they say the rest is history. Some of his songs are more well associated with other artists like the one mentioned, Janis Joplin's cover of Me & Bobby McGee and a heap of others who had hits with Kris' songs before he got his break himself. He wasn't young when his debut came out, in his 30's already, but he made up for lost time in the 70s, which takes up disc 1. The most well known songs are all here, Sunday Mornin', Bobby McGee, Help me make it through the night, etc., but the whole of disc one is just huge, with not a weak moment to be had and evidence enough that Kristofferson surely belongs among the very top songwriters whenever another list or countdown is made. To pick favourites would be like trying to pick your favourite out of your own kids, but I like the make the best of every situation attitude of the upbeat "The best of all possible worlds", the crying over a woman song "From the bottle to the bottom", the track about Johnny inspring him "To beat the devil" and finally "Please don't tell me how the story ends" whose impact is just massive. It's weighed heavily towards the older stuff, and disc 1 is a lot stronger than disc 2 but his best stuff WAS in the 70s. Even if you don't know much about Kris then this compilation will make you want to write a review as unshamedly gushing as all the ones here, this included. Definitely worth your time.
Any fan of Americana should have this in their library..........2004-12-23
This CD is simply a remastered 37 song collection of one of the best songwriters of our time. Disc one covers 1969 - 1971 and disc two covers everything else. What's strange is the first disc is chronological and the second one is completely haphazard. This is sort of a budget collection since there is not much of a booklet with minimal liner notes and few photos. Either way, this is something any fan of Americana should have in their library.
+1/2 -- Weighted to seminal early work.......2004-06-06
An artist as prolific as Kristofferson is necessarily difficult to capture in compilation, not least of which because his songs and singing are half his artistic story. Without the hits that others launched from Kristofferson's pen, you can't assemble a full view of his impact on Nashville and pop music in general. Still, Kristofferson's own recordings, especially those of songs made popular by others, are intimate and revealing in ways that no one else's could ever really be. Jopin sung the hell out of "Me and Bobby McGee," but she lost some of the down-and-out brokenness Kristofferson laid into it. Similarly, for "Help Me Make it Through the Night" and "For the Good Times" the hits became icons for Sammi Smith and Ray Price, respectively, but Kristofferson's own versions are perhaps even more unforgettable for his earthier, less-polished voice.
These two discs lean heavily on Kristofferson's earlier work, which, for most listeners will be the right mix. As a recording artist, Kristofferson hit the ground in full sprint on his debut album, "Kristofferson." The follow-up, "The Silver Tongued Devil and I" was just as strong. These two albums alone contribute 16 of disc 1's 18 tracks. Disc 2, on the other hand, samples a dozen different albums, stopping for more than once at any particular release only a few times. The result is a highly consistent disc 1, and a more erratic disc 2. To be fair, one can't help but draw heavily upon Kristofferson's early pair, but given that disc 2 already fails to keep a linear timeline, it might have helped to add a few of the earlier tracks to disc 2.
That said, what's here is magnificent, and shows off Kristofferson's lyrical poetry to great effect. Disc 1 is only bettered by buying Kristofferson's first two albums as reissues (something that any serious fan is highly recommended to do). Disc 2 does an adequate job of surveying the work that followed Kristofferson's initial burst of genius. Included are tracks recorded throughout the '70s, including "Highwayman" with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, and duets with Willie Nelson, and then-wife Rita Coolidge.
This is a good starter set, though anyone bitten by the works on disc 1 will want to pick up the full first two albums. Disc 2 provides a good sense of the path Kristofferson's work took, with good hints as to which albums listeners might wish to examine in full. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

Jesus was a Capricorn - KK , review.......2007-01-10
This is one of my favourite CDs from KK. My sister and I purchased the cassette when it was originally released back in the seventies, but it eventually was wore out, hence the purchase now of the CD. Its a CD I can listen to over and over.
Well, y'all jus haf ta sit n' lissen fer a spell........2001-09-15
Being from the river hills of the Missouri and Ozark rivers in Missouri, this album was a standy by for most of my family along with Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff. With that said, this album is in my opinion Kristofferson's best. Wheather you're a rock n' roller or hard core country freak or both, this album is a must have. It is truly a work of art and one of the most moving pieces of work from the country genre I have ever heard. His jumps into gospel are beautiful. His band on this album trtuly understands what Kristofferson is trying to convey. I first heard this on Quadraphonic 8 Trac back in 1974. I have heard it on vinyl and on cd. I like vinyl the best but the cd is definitely worth the buy.
Religion in review........2001-01-07
I have to echo the sentiments of Micheal Carley in his review about this album.I still have the original vinyl version and still play it frequently and am still moved in the same way each time,as I am with all the rest of Kris' music it never seems to become old.His step into gospel with Why Me and Help Me were a surprise for me at the time but I really did (and still do) find them quite moving.Other versions I've heard of these two hymns have never sounded or felt as meaningful as these versions. Being a young man at the time of this albums release, and having just left home, the song Jesse Younger really seemed to make an impact on me and like so much of Kris' music at the time seemed to reflect my own sentiments about the worlds politics and issues of the day.
Great mix of songs.......2000-09-18
This is Kris's fourth album and is an excellent one. This CD provides a great example of the different songwriting styles Kristofferson employs. There are three social/political songs. The title track is a criticism of closed-mindedness, very much in the vein of "Blame it on the Stones" and "The Law is for Protection of the People" from the "Me and Bobby McGee" album. Jesse Younger is probably better known. It is a sarcastic (as only Kris can be) take on parents who try to control the lives of their children. "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" is the other political song and it shows how involved Kristofferson was in some of the movements of the day.
There are also a couple of gospel songs, unusual for Kris. "Help Me" was written by Larry Gatlin, who also helps sing it. "Why Me", written by Kristofferson, has become a gospel standard, performed by numerous artists such as Conway Twitty and Johnny Cash. It is, of course, better known as "Why Me Lord". In my opinion, Kris's own version is one of the better ones. The songwriter knows best.
Most of the other songs are personal and/or love songs. Two, "It Sure Was (Love)" and "Give It Time to Be Tender" are duets with then wife Rita Coolidge. The latter is truly excellent.
This CD is one that all Kristofferson fans will want in their collections.

This is probably my personal favorite of all their LPs together. The songs are light hearted and I love the cover photo.
Breakaway - KK & Rita review.......2007-01-10
Another one of KK's albums my sister and I purchased when it was originally released. Enjoy Kris & Rita together. Love 'Dakota (the dancing bear). The cassette wore out over the years so had to replace it with the CD.
Kris at His Best.......2006-07-28
Kris Kristofferson wrote great songs. He was a great solo artist. But, when Rita came along, he pulled out his best songs, hired the best studio musicians, and recorded some of the best country duets ever! He went on to be a Hollywood star, but I remember him best singing "Lover Please" and "I'd Rather be Sorry" with his fine-singing squeeze.
A Gem of a Disc.......2006-06-08
The husband and wife team of Kris and Rita were the darlings of the 1970's, and this album, recorded in 1974, was designed to be the follow up to their first collaboration, the excellent Full Moon. Kris and Rita were smart in their joint albums in that they met in the middle: mostly with covers of really great songs.
Apparently most of the songs were set in in the proper key for Coolidge to sing, which kind of made Kristofferson work all that much harder, and the result is some of his best vocals ever.
The song selection here is quite good too, including two of Kristofferson's own more obscure tunes, I'd Rather Be Sorry and I've Got To Have You (which was previously covered by Carly Simon on her Anticipation album). Another gem includes Rain, penned by country great Larry Gatlin.
It's been a long time coming to see the release of this album on CD -- most of us had to settle for vinyl until now. If you're a fan of either Kristofferson or Coolidge, or you're already familiar with their all-too-brief collaborations (they divorced both personally and professionally), you won't be disappointed with this CD.
Ecstatic over finding this in CD at Amazon!!!!!!.......1999-05-30
I have literally "worn out" the album I bought many years ago when this was first released. The collaboration of these two artists was a stroke of genius. The way their voices play off each other will lift your spirit!! If you are a fan of either artist, this is a must!!!!!

What a combination--Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson!!!
Product well packaged and received in a timely manner. Very good condition.
Beautiful songs, horrible sound quality but it can be fixed.......2006-03-06
As said before, the first songs of this CD are almost okay, regarding the quality of the sound, but from the third or fourth song on, it starts to get muffled and no high frequencies. I love all the songs, specially tracks 7 and 8 and so I ripped them and using Sound Forge, forcing equalization for the higher frequencies, three passes, I was able to recover the trebles and I can say that the result is quite good. Basically, the most important frequency was around 7KHz, that I boosted more than 20db, but that was not all. Now, I can listen to the songs with a very acceptable masterization. I can here the cymbals! I wonder what the guys that have the recorded tracks could do with today equipment, if I, with just a PC and a good audio application, was able to make it sound so much better. Time for an official remastering!
By the way, this CD would deserve five stars if the sound quality was better.
Thanks Willie & Kris........2005-11-19
A Very Good Album, With Two Of My Favorites. Sounds VERY Good..
Good Interpretations of Great Songs.......2005-01-14
Throughout his career Willie has had great success doing both his own material as well as interpreting the cream of other songwriters efforts. And no doubt about it, when Willie does a song the interpretation may be many things, but it will certainly be unique. Such is the case here. He takes the absolute best songs of Kristofferson's catalog (through 1979) and makes them his own. Just listen to the intro to the first track. Is there any doubt at all who is the artist here? Is it one of Willie's best efforts? In the context of his prolific body of work, probably not. Is it the best single artist collection of Kristofferson's writing in one place? Probably. Sure, Ray Price's is the definative "For The Good Times". Ditto for Johnny Cash's "Sunday Morning...", and who could ever forget Janis' version of "Me & Bobby McGee"? Artists from Sinatra to Al Green to Lawrence Welk to Dizzy Gillespie to 450+ others at last count have covered Kris' songs, mostly drawing from the same nine songs presented here. But these versions make them sound like they were written just for Willie and his sparse band. It would have been nice to also include "One Day At A Time" (co-written with Marijohn Wilkin) or one of the Kristofferson-Silverstein collaborations. The best of those, "Once More With Feeling" had already been re-released several times in compilations by RCA after Willie jumped to Columbia, so it's understandable why it didn't appear here.
Obviously recorded/mastered on analog equipment before Jimmy Bowen forced modern (for then) production values down Nashville's bean-counters' throats, the audio suffers a bit. Drums sound horrible with no high end, but vocals and most other instruments are ok. "Trigger" has a mellow sound because Willie wants it that way, or he wouldn't use nylon strings. The electric guitar sound falls victim to dated effects pedals on some, but not all, tracks. Columbia could probably do better now, but this album was issued on CD before the digital remix/remaster craze of the early-mid 90's when the technology really took off. Based on the quality/condition of the original analog masters, and lack of demand for an upgrade, this may be as good as we can hope for. And it's better than most of what came out of Nashville in 1979.
pragmatically speaking.......2004-09-26
If you can get a vinyl copy of this album, you will notice that on the back cover there is a close up head shot of willie and kris together. If you place the back side of this album slightly under the covers of your bed while still exposing the majority of the picture, you can make it look like they're in bed together. other than that, this album is not of much use.

With all the attention garnered by Kris Kristofferson in the year of his 70th birthday, this exemplary tribute showcases the many facets of his songwriting--political, spiritual, self-mythologizing, peerlessly romantic--while celebrating the esteem in which he's held by generations of fellow artists. Neither Gretchen Wilson nor Shooter Jennings is as old as some of Kristofferson's best-known songs, but they acquit themselves just fine on "Sunday Mornin' Coming Down" and "The Silver Tongued Devil and I," respectively. It's no surprise that Emmylou Harris makes "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33" sound more beautiful than ever (with a surprisingly smooth segue from the recorded introduction by a young Kristofferson), that Rosanne Cash gets under the skin of "Lovin' Him Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)," or that Willie Nelson captures the wistful essence of the epic "The Legend." Yet part of the collection's appeal is that it takes some radical chances, with Brian McKnight transforming "Me and Bobby McGee" into an achingly soulful ballad, though the stripped-down pop duet by the usually superb Lloyd Cole and Jill Sobule on "For the Good Times" falls comparatively flat. Kristofferson gets the last word with a closing demo from 35 years ago, with "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" providing an apt finale. --Don McLeese

The Wordsmith -- Kris Kristofferson.......2007-05-06
Most "Tribute" cuts are not as I envisioned, but this one is fantastic !! Each Artist gives Kris' songs a different Life than the ones I have embedded in my mind. I have loved Kris and his songs for over 28 years, and have worn out plastic vinyl, 8 tracks, cassettes and other mediums listening to Kris ! He's my Number One Artist, and the "Tribute" extends my Love for Kris and his music ! Great Job Producers !!

I don't think there is a bad one in the bunch! Made my top 30 folk releases of 2006 list.
Don't usually like tribute albums,.......2006-11-08
but this one I actually listen to. Marta Gomez makes 'The Circle' beautiful and compelling, Rodney Crowell's verson of 'Come Sundown' is perfect, Marshal Chapman does a great 'Jesus was a Capricorn'. Those are my favorites, but on the entire album, there isn't one song that I skip. Highly recommended.
Lackluster CD.......2006-08-31
The music was very disappointing. I should have trusted my instincts when I listened to the clips, but I had high hopes for this much-anticipated CD. Save your money!

--Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
An American Milestone.......2007-03-22
This is a unique, one-of-a-kind album, a landmark recording by a tremendous artist at the peak of his creative genius.
You better have some affinity for the down and out, however, as this record is populated with drunks, junkies, bums, losers, hippies, the loved and the loveless. Kris' narrative focus is on the underdog, the marginal, the other left out or kicked out by society. His characters are on the road, bumming drinks and cigarettes, singing songs and landing in jail.
The recording is spare, emphasizing Kris' lyrics, guitar, and voice. That voice. His off-key tone, over time, is mesmerizing, perfect for the characters he is singing about -- I wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks!
Highly recomended.......2006-02-23
This is one magnificant CD. We play it alot and are blown away by it every time. The one song in paticular Darby's Castle is a song my wife had on an album that she listened to in 1969. She couldn't remember the title but after purchasing this CD realized that was it. I highly recomend this and any other music he has done. He just has that sound that hasn't been able to be duplicated since. His songs are topnotch.
