What I like about Brooks & Dunn is they never pretend to be anything more than what they are--entertainers whose main goal in life is to come up with hits so catchy they'll grab your attention through the tinniest radio speaker ever stuck in a pickup. Unlike, say, Garth Brooks or James Michael Montgomery, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn never pass themselves off as profound philosophers or social commentators. For this duo, lyrics are just an excuse to belt out a big, juicy chorus hook, usually over an equally sizable dance beat. It helps, of course, that both men are fine singers, but just as important is the fact that almost every song on "Borderline," their fourth album, contains a terrific refrain and almost nothing else that might get in the way. -- Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Makes 2 great albums even better .......2007-07-09

Nico is sort of an acquired taste. If you've already acquired it and have The Marble Index and The Desert Shore, should you buy this? Yes. First of all, Rhino has done their usual fantastic job making the sound quality as good as possible. I didn't think The Marble Index sounded that good on the previous edition of the CD. It does now. It's just magical. Second, The Marble Index now includes Nico's unadorned original takes that were later treated by John Cale. Freed from additional passes through recording equipment, Nico's vocals sound rich, expansive and wonderful. I don't pretend to compare the 2 versions, as both are great, I just like having version A and version B.

5 out of 5 stars Sepulchral, sublime..........2007-04-25

The review by Charles is fairly informative and accurate, so I won't attempt to say much beyond the fact that it is great that a label has seen fit to give the grand remastered reissue treatment with bonus tracks galore to these classic albums. I have bought both of these albums at least three times each over the course of my life: wearing out the original US pressings in the 70s, replacing them with the import vinyl reissues in the 80s, and then the CD versions in the 90s. But this is such a lovely package I don't mind spending the money again on this great music. The added alternate tracks are well worth owning if you already know the original albums: the Marble Index outtakes are first-rate and the Desertshore demos provide a new perspective on that material. The Marble Index still measures up as one of the spookiest records ever recorded. The liner notes and booklet are lovingly and intelligently put together. My single complaint is that I dearly wish they had made one of these discs a CD-ROM or included a DVD so that they could have included the video for the song "Evening Of Light". That video is dizzyingly brilliant, and seldom seen (there was a clip of it in NICO ICON which you can find on YouTube, but it would be great to see the whole video)...

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-03-17

Nico had three distinct phases in her musical career:

- The Velvet Underground and her first solo effort, featuring many of the musicians from the former;

- the three albums from the late 60s through early 70s (two of which are featured here) along with 1974's The End; and

- everything that came thereafter (many of which were live albums and products of her relentlessly touring).

Briefly, there's not much I can say about the early period that readers aren't already familiar with (or you probably wouldn't be reading this). The later material generally has not garnered much in the way of critical acclaim, but this was due to the fact that many were "unofficial" releases and not really meant to be heard.

The Frozen Borderline: 1968 - 1970 not only re-releases two of her best three albums, but with a plentitude of additional material from these recording sessions. At the time of their original release, they basically went unheard (as unforutately will probably still be the case now). Critics were quite harsh with these Gothic and what they called "depressing" tunes, not realizing then that they had a timelessness about them that holds up all these years. Whereas many albums from the 60s sound horribly dated, Nico wrote music that not only defied the time period from which they came, but all that were to come thereafter.

Interestly, liner notes indicate that four additional tracks were written and recorded for the first of the two albums, The Marble Index, but were deleted because the producers thought that no one could stand listening to more than 30 minutes of this kind of music. How fortunate we are to have the complete album now. And beyond that, 8 of the 9 original tracks are "repeated" via different versions that bring an interesting study to the development of the album.

The second album is Desertshore, the perfect follow-up to The Marble Index, and in many respects, a continuation of the same. The bonus tracks are invaluable... Nico, unaccompanied on demo versions. How rare it is to hear Nico this way... just her voice and the mysterious harmonium that she played! This gives a genuine insight to what she had intended. This isn't to say that John Cale's incredible instrumentation and his presence overall are not great additions to the final products, because indeed they are. In many respects, these albums represent a collaboration between the two, which in part made these albums as great as they are. However, the inclusion of the Nico-only demos serve to show that the original critics were wrong... that Cale didn't write these albums, Nico did, while he enhanced them by adding his magic.

Rounding out the package is an exceptionally informative booklet, although the "rare" photographs certainly would have been better served with additional pages so that they could have been larger. Another quibble is the placement of the "hidden track" at the end of the second disc. One has endure over 5 minutes of silence before this outtake from The Marble Index is finally heard.

Actually, these are probably the most difficult albums to review as there is nothing to compare them to. They are so utterly unique. In fact, this is one of the reasons why they are so timeless. There is nothing like them at this point in time and probably never will be. The best one can do is assure those considering purchasing this set that your money will not be wasted. Also, any "complete" collection of Nico's best work would also have to include The End, where she is backed by the likes of John Cale, Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera... certainly a forgotten masterpiece.

Across the Borderline was produced in 1993 by Don Was, then flush with work following his helming of Bonnie Raitt's commercial breakthrough, Nick of Time. In fact, his celebrated clients at the time included everyone from Iggy Pop to Neil Diamond. Here he surrounds Willie Nelson with a vast cast of superstar admirers that includes Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Lyle Lovett. If the thought of Nelson and Lyle Lovett dueting on Peter Gabriel "Don't Give Up" with Mark Isham blowing dulcet trumpet lines above it all gives you the willies, surprisingly, it shouldn't. In fact, it's a highlight of this very successful all-star album. Nelson, coming off a dry spell, sounds invigorated, the material is strong, and the musicianship sparkles. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Good Country with Some good duets.......2005-08-05

Willie Nelson's Across the Borderline is a classic album. On this record there are songs that range from covers (ranging from Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel) and originals. Plus the guest appearances are amazing. Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Sinead O'Connor, and Bob Dylan lend their talents to this record. My favorite song is Heartland which Nelson cowrote with Dylan. This collaboration results in a real personal poetic song. Favorites include American Tune (with Paul Simon on lead guitar), Getting over You (with Bonnie Raitt), Most Unoriginal Sin, Don't Give Up (with Sinead O'Connor), Heartland (with Bob Dylan), Graceland, What Was It You Wanted?, Farther Down the Line, and If I Were the Man You Wanted. Highly Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Typically eclectic album featuring stellar cast of guests.......2005-04-28

As with so many of Willie's albums, this album is not easy to classify, but it contains elements of several genres including country, pop, rock, folk and blues, all blended together in Willie's own inimitable style.

Willie duets with Bonnie Raitt on Getting over you, Sinead O'Connor on Don't give up (originally a hit duet for Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush) and Bob Dylan on Heartland. Elsewhere on this album, Willie sings solo, but Paul Simon plays guitar on a couple of his own songs - American tune and Graceland. The set closes with a song he has recorded a few times - Still is still moving to me.

This was the last album of original material that Willie recorded for Columbia. It does not contain any of Willie's classics but it's all good stuff, especially those duets with Bonnie and Sinead.

4 out of 5 stars Willie plus a cast of stars.......2005-04-11

Usually these "cast of thousands" type albums just blend it an overboiled tasteless paste...so much "input" is added that the artist's style disappears, gauzed over by the producer into a faceless project that could have been anyone. Thankfully, this is NOT the case here. Don Was makes a thicker sound for Willie here but stops short of filling the tracks with so many sonic bells and whistles that Willie's greatest asset...that solid interpretive voice of his...gets lost. Indeed, Was' great taste shows in use of touches that sound like they wouldn't work (for example, a muted jazzy trumpet courtesy of Mark Isham on Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up") that end up enhancing the songs. Most of the songs here are Willie covering songs of others with quite a few guest vocalists (Sinead O'Connor, Sinead O'Connor, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt) on tap. The band backing Willie is crack also (Jim Keltner, Mark O'Connor, Benmont Tench,John Leventhal,Johnny Gimble at times). A minor complaint might be that several interesting duets DON'T happen. Willie does a John Hiatt and a Lyle Lovett tune, but they don't sing on the cuts. (Nor does Paul Simon on either of the 2 songs of his Willie does here, though he does play guitar.)

HIGHLIGHTS:
Though Bonnie Raitt's appearance here is probably a result of Was' recent collaboration with her (he produced her big comeback album "Nick of Time"), her smoky latenight bar voice and slide are the perfect compliment on "Getting Over You". Sinead O'Connor, surprisingly, turns out to be a good vocal pairing as well. Their harmonies on the last verse of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" sparkle, and the arrangement recasts it as the country tale of the distressed workingman that the lyric always was. The title track's saga of a Mexican casting his eyes toward the "broken promised land" of the U.S. benefits from Kristofferson's harmonies, though they could be higher in the mix. Nelson's interpretations of Dylan's "What was it You Wanted?" and Lovett's "Farther Down the Line" and "If I Were the Man You Wanted" are also great. Of the numbers penned by Nelson himself, the brisk "Still is Still Moving to Me" and tender "Valentine" fare best.

LOWS:
Willie turns in a curiously dispassionate reading of Willie Dixon's classic blues "I Love the Life I Live" though the musical backing is nicely relaxed. I consider myself a Dylan fan, though his voice is at its croakiest for "Heartland" making it a track I skip by.

BOTTOM LINE:
Another fine performance from Nelson is made somewhat more contemporary by the collaborations here, though he's not made to play second-fidddle (as Carlos Santana was on his recent album with Rob Thomas and others). Nelson is clearly the star here and the production by Was recognizes that fact. A good one for Nelson fans and for those just learning about him.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2004-08-14

My absolute favorite Willie Nelson album. I am a huge fan, but this is the one I keep going back to after all these years. I tire of some, but never of this one.

5 out of 5 stars You have friends.......2003-10-14

This album from 1993 is one of Willie's finest. It features a wide variety of good songs from different songwriters, plus guest appearances by many of Willie's famous friends. The whole album is good, but my personal favorites are "Most Unoriginal Sin", "Graceland", "Still is Still Moving to Me" and "Heartland" with Bob Dylan. Anybody who likes Willie should enjoy this album.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2, actually. Not bad, but not their best........2003-12-04

An album I started out totally prepared to like, though I have to admit, I eventually felt that most of the songs dragged on a bit too much. It kicks off with the album's biggest hit, a swell cover version of B.W. Stevenson's "My Maria," which is great fun, although it follows the original so closely that it's really kinda of cheating. (I don't think most of their fans knew it was a cover tune, though, and I'm sure B.W. was plenty happy cashing the royalty checks...) I also liked the song "One Heartache At A Time," which is a pretty straightforward honkytonk number, but the majority of the songs on here are too prefab and studio-perfect... Still, I like how the formula is being used; B'n'D are unashamedly commercial, and when they get their groove down right, they deserve all the success they can find. This one might not be a keeper, but it's not a dud, either.

4 out of 5 stars 'Borderline' is great both sides of the border.......2003-08-27

The first single / track here and one of the most perfectly (actually, even better than the original!) covered songs ever is the muscular 'My Maria' , a song we are all so glad they remade into another classic.

The western-cool cover/photo of the two is also appealing as well: back to the tunes!

'Why Would I Say Goodbye' brnigs Kix Brooks over to the main mike and makes a smooth tune, like a mid-tempo love ballad. Smooth one and really well performed/produced.

Here comes the gravel and dirt in 'Mama Gets Dressed Up For Nothing', a fun rockin' time that almost makes a full plegged rock tune with a buzzsaw attitude!

Great ballads are the towering 'I Am That Man', and a more sad 'A Man This Lonely'. Just listen to Ronnie's soaring vocals on both tracks.

Another highlight is with Kix Brooks neat little fun one 'More Than A Margerita', a song that makes into a non over the top spot, but very cool.

The hard thing about a lot of the public and critics' complaints to artists is that certain songs that are neither oh-so sad or rockin/movin' seem to be excused as fillers. Some may be, but most of them - on any album - are not. They should be considered as rest stops, or ones that carry a calm smile. Why not after all of the sad heartaches or rompin and stompin'- even though both of these attitudes still make great songs.

2 out of 5 stars As a whole, very poor.......2003-03-28

I love Brooks and Dunn, but they have certainly had some mis-steps in their some 13 years of recording. This is by far their biggest. After putting out three hard rock/country masterpieces, they had the nerve to release something whose only platform to be considered a record is several mediocre, overplayed singles and the C.D. on which it is recorded. Don't support bad albums; anyone with any sense of what music is will not buy this piece of garbage.

5 out of 5 stars An All-Time Favorite.......2002-06-19

This 1996 CD has gotten me through a lot of hard times. I don't care if it is profound, deep, meaningful, or just plain wonderful. It works for me. The fine country voices of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn ARE country for me, and when I'm feeling down and low, nobody can cheer me better than this ultra-sexy duo.

Brooks and Dunn are unashamedly commercial, and that don't bother me none. I can crank up this album and sing away to "My Maria," "Mama Don't Get Dressed Up for Nothing," "Redneck Rhythm & Blues," and all the other spectacular songs in this collection. There isn't a weak one in the bunch, whether it's the aching "A Man This Lonely" or my all-time favorite: "My Love Will Follow You."

Truly this is a country classic, but in my view, it can work for non-country listeners as well. It's simply the best of the best.

I've owned and worn out this album listening and laughing to it for 30 years. "That's the way the girls are from Texas" is a hoot, the entire album is entertaining, "Crazy about an automobile", "Try me" what a bunch of classics. Ry Cooder seems to change his skin often, this particular one is fun.

I have been a ry Cooder fan for as long as I can remember and have owned every cooder LP a few times over until they were worn out, lost,or loaned. There is no such thing as a bad Ry cooder song, just a little different and anyone who has ever criticised his music for not being what they expected shouldn't be listening or considering themselves a fan.

If sweater-vests could rock out, they'd sound like Ozma. "Spending Time ..." may remind you of Scooter lookalikes furiously banging their heads and giving devil horns.
Ozma got their big break by opening for Weezer. Both share the annoying capacity for blending guitars with cheesy 80's synths. The perfect example is the title track, which could've been used in a promo for "Joanie Loves Chachi."
Another similar trait is irritating, whiny vocals with no range. On "Eponine", and other tracks, there's a definite Queen influence, especially in the bombastic guitars. But the singing is so wimpy and lifeless, it'll make you appreciate how unique Freddie Mercury was.
Ozma are so bland, sorting out socks might seem more exciting. Or sweater-vests.

    5 out of 5 stars Pinkerton-esque.......2004-12-03

Let me begin by saying that this review was written after Ozma's 2004 breakup. This was, to say the least, quite a heartbreak. And since there's been plenty of apt time to reflect upon Ozma's debut and sophomore albums [yes, the ones that sound like Weezer], I can now undoubtedly say that "Spending Time On The Borderline" is Ozma at its best. To put it plainly...a masterpiece. Admittedly, when I first picked this album up and popped it into my CD player, I was NOT impressed. Ozma could have broke up at that very moment and my response would have been, "Who cares...they're no good anymore." But as albums do have a tendency to grow on you, I decided to give this one a try. After all, what did I have to lose? Slowly and steadily certain tracks started to pop out at me..."Hey, 'Come Home Andrea' is one catchy song!" And, "Whoa, this Japanese song sure is poppy!" Then there are the deeper songs on the album, like "Eponine", "Bad Dogs", and "Game Over". They take a bit longer to love, but the wait is certainly worth it. To sum it all up, there's not a single track on this album that I wouldn't want to listen to, anywhere, anytime. Despite the mysterious tension that corrupted Brummel and Slegr, I, for one, know that they went out [no pun intended] on a good note with "Spending Time On The Borderline". Another "Pinkerton"? Perhaps. But only time will tell...

*Ryan and José have started up a new band labeled "Yes Dear". Hopefully they can continue their largely unpublicized legacy. Check them out at myspace.com/yesdear

    2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2004-11-05

I bought this album because I heard that Ozma was similar to Rooney and Weezer (bands I think are good). Ozma sure does have some similarities in this album (though they're probably more comparable to a Christian band like Reliant K), but that doesn't make the album any good. The whole album is very boring. There's just nothing special to it. I recommend that you pass on this.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Pop.......2004-10-16

I think that Ozma is consistently one of the more "interesting" bands to come along. I do hear the Weezer influence, but at the same time it is filtered through a lot of other bands (Queen anyone?) as well as a lot of originality. The two part vocal melodies, instrumentation, tones, etc. are fully realized on this "studio" album. I like the whole Ozma catalog, but the production on this disc kicks all the other ones in the rear. As a guitarist, I have to hand it to Ryen. This is consistently one of the better riff orientated guitar albums that I have heard in a long time. He can also shred like a beast, but all his guitar lines support the song melodically and rhythmically. You can't ask for more from a guitarist. All the guitar is there for a reason. This is playing that I aspire to. It reminds me a lot of Brian May.

As for the songs, "Your Name" is one of the most orginal ballads I have heard in a while. I love "Bad Dogs" even though most don't. The lead on that song is exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Experimental yet excellent..........2004-02-29

Ozma definitely shows some maturity musically with this album. I did a review of this CD for my school newspaper (over 1500 studnents/staff/parents read the newspaper), so hopefully I can get the word out about Ozma to some people.

    1. Spending Time - the band experiments with some guitar textures and spiffy synth lines. May take a few listens to get used to. 7/10

    2. Your Name - good vocals, perfect melody. 8.5/10

    3. Come Home Andrea - a vaguely Celtic, alt-country tune that even people who hate country will like. One of the best tracks on the album. 9/10

    4. Bad Dogs - marching band percussion leads into a hard rockin' song. 8.5/10

    5. Utsukushii Shibuya - great bass line, nice flute and strings. 9.5/10

    6. Turtleneck - probably the worst track. nice metaphorical lyrics though. 6.5/10

    7. Game Over - catchiest track. my personal favorite. - 10/10

    8. Curve In The Old 1-9 - elaborate and brilliant, both lyrically and musically. - 9/10

    9. Restart - another GREAT track. such a perfect melody. - 9.5/10

    10. Eponine - fun to sing along to. very catchy. - 9/10

    11. Wake Up - nice vocals from Rachel Haden (Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, Weezer). 8.5/10

    12. Light Years Will Burn - not my favorite. still pretty good though. 7.5/10

    Overall: 8.5/10

    Definitely awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Good track, not great.......2006-08-20

This tune really is a mover on the dance floor, more so than an actual quality piece. But it does have a funky house beat that is reminiscent of Gray's "The Weekend". It is more mature in that the repeated lines are not so annoying this time around. Still the vocal repetition is boring, and the instrumentals and bass line are what keep the trancy-house interesting. Check out the music video, pushes the "borderline" more than "The Weekend" does. Well I guess you could figure that out from the cover image (hint: Youtube).

Some artists and works of art seem to come along at just the right time in your life. For me, the end of a relationship that never should have started left me homeless, with my head spinning and my heart shattered. "Borderline Heart" captures the essence of such an experience and the recovery from betrayal, from incredible loss and the sweet joy of getting on with one's life. The title cut is wise and knowing, written by a strong woman who's "been there". The cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Snowing On Raton" is breathtaking. "Hitchhiking in the Rain" never fails to bring tears to my eyes. If you see a copy of this CD used, buy it. Rosalie Sorrels is a magnificent, feisty treasure of a woman and one helluva songwriter!
