Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential--7+ complete albums on 4 discs.......2007-03-06

It's too bad this compilation of Townes Van Zandt's music is getting harder to find--it's got his first 7 complete studio albums, which includes all of the music he made in the 60's and 70's, plus most of the live album he put out in the 70's as well. Why is this box essential? First of all, because of the quality of Van Zandt's music, and second because of the value--just check around. Some of these individual albums go for $60 or more, and here they can all be purchased together for much cheaper (I got my copy from caiman_com through Amazon's alternate sellers for $22). If you're looking to start getting into his music, it's a no-brainer that this CD has the most complete introduction at the best price.

If you haven't heard Van Zandt's music yet, you've probably at least heard ABOUT it. It's country-flavored, but definitely not straight up country, nor is it the slick "country-rock" put out by bands like the Byrds. No, it's not easy to stick TVZ into one genre, but he does touch on country, folk, rock, and pop. His earlier work sounds lyrically much like Bob Dylan, though he eventually develops more of a unique written voice for himself. Van Zandt's singing voice is definitely unique--southern, understated, yet capable of powerful, wavering emotion and subtle texture.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to delve into the merits of each album, since that would take way too long, but I can say that each of these albums has great highlights, and each album is worth listening all the way through. Van Zandt does get the best around The Late Great Townes Van Zandt, which includes his best-known song "Pancho and Lefty," but he's also a great interpreter of gospel tunes and classic Hank Williams. If you're interested in Townes Van Zandt, I urge you to start with this collection--even if you pay $40, you'll still come out saving a lot of money at $5 per album. Hope you enjoy checking out one of folk music's best kept secrets!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable.......2006-03-13

Here is a 4-CD Set that costs less than most 2-CD Sets; and this one has 100 songs; all original. You cannot go wrong with this one. A fine booklet is also included which provides info regarding discography. All of ET's big hits are here, as well as some lesser known numbers. There's duets with the legendary Red Foley, and you can hear the incredible lead guitar which made his music so recognizable, despite the ever-changing lineup of guitarists on display here. Proper Records released this set, and they deserve a big thumbs-up on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value .......2005-12-29

Wow - a compendium of the best of Ernest Tubb from 1941-1950 at a bargain price. Sound quality is excellent (given the age of the masters) and the music is quintessential Texas Troubador, including the original versions of most of his biggest hits. Proper has put out a set which restores the early Tubb catalog in a manner befitting the efforts of Bear Family but at about 1/3 of the price of an equivalent Bear collection. Ernest was in his vocal prime with these recordings, and (although his bands here were not as good as later collections of Texas Troubadors -particularly the mid-60s batch), The Texas Troubadors augment ET's efforts in an appropriate manner. Those who saw ET in his later years will note that the arrangements of some of his 40s hits changed over time, particularly that of his signature tune "Walking The Floor Over You" , which sounds relatively acoustic here compared to the rather jazzy number it became in the hands of later, more amplified, versions of the Texas Troubadours

5 out of 5 stars ERNEST TUBB.......2005-10-07

GOOD OLE ERNEST TUBB, HE'S ANOTHER GOOD ONE, I GREW UP WITH HIS SONGS OR MOST OF THEM.

5 out of 5 stars I spent my misspent youth listening to Ernest Tubb.......2004-06-12

I have Peter Harris to thank for bringing this boxed set to my attention. I had a small collection of Tubb's songs, but one in particular, which I always liked, I could not find anywhere;
probably because I had the name wrong: I thought it was "On My Way to Italy (From the Gulf of Mexico)". It was, instead, titled "Seaman's Blues." I could play it on the guitar, and knew the lyrics, but I wanted it by Ernest Tubb. Now I have it. Thanks again, Peter Harris (see his spotlight review.)

There are four CDs in this boxed set, with 25 songs on each, all by Ernest Tubb. Too many to critique them all, but if you are familiar with his singing, you won't need a critique. Contrary to another critic, I found the quality of the CD quite good. I'm always amazed at the number of critics who spend more time criticizing the technical quality of the vehicle (CD, DVD, etc.) than the quality of the singer's voice or instrumental skill of the side men.

These days, it is the digital mastering. In the old days it was the clicks and pops in the records. Well, in the beer halls on the Mex border, we were often too drunk to care, and we enjoyed the music for the music itself. T. Texas Tyler and Ernest Tubb were big with that audience. Marty Robbins was in the Navy at the time (along with me) and no one had yet heard of him. We never heard of Patsy Cline or Jim Reeves, either, although they may have been around. We surely knew Eddy Arnold, although he was not yet Pat Boone's father-in-law, and Red Foley.

So, don't expect soothing pop music from Ernest Tubb. It's country/western, beer hall music that you could sit and nurse your broken heart to all night. Run Western music backwards, as they say, and you get your girl back, your truck back, your dog back, your horse back, and you don't need Western music anymore. And that would be a shame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Single Disk available .......2005-11-04

This set covers roughly the same period as the Proper Box Set but focuses on the hits alone. Sound quality is excellent and the music is quintessential Texas Troubador, including the original versions of most of his biggest hits. Ernest was in his vocal prime with these recordings, and (although his bands here were not as good as later collections -particularly the mid-60s batch), they augment ET's efforts in an appropriate manner. These are the songs that made ET a superstar.

4 out of 5 stars Slippin' around (obscene).......2001-10-31

I purchased this CD to listen to "Slippin' around" which was banned
by the Canadian Government (circa 1949) as being obscene.
Turns out that the whole CD was great.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Ernest Tubb fans with great sound.......2000-10-18

This CD really does have these 25 tracks which are among Tubb's biggest hits from 1944-1949 including 2 tracks with the Andrews Sisters (essentially both sides of the same 78), 1 track of Red Foley, his version of Blue Christmas, and of course many of the signature hits such as "Walking The Floor Over You," "Soldier's Last Letter," "Forever Is Ending Today," "Letters Have No Arms," "Rainbow at Midnight," and many others with great sound. I had found that several of the tracks on here have cleaner backgrounds and better sound than many of the same tracks on the now out of print "Country Music Hall of Fame" CD that MCA issued in 1991 that are also on this CD including "Walking The Floor Over You." If you area honky tonk fan, a country music fan in general or an Ernest Tubb fan, this CD is a must have for 25 of his earliest hits for a great price. Several of these songs are also on the Millennium Collection with 3 more recent tracks, but this and the Hall of Fame combined make a more comprehensive collection than the Millennium Collection, but the 3 tracks on that collection make the disc worth buying so that you can burn those tracks onto CD-R (assuming you have a CD burner) and then resell the Millennium CD. Buy this CD no matter how big a fan of E.T. you are. Enjoy E.T. at his earliest and just like any CD with all original recordings, E.T. at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal (and still available at Amazon.uk!).......2006-10-26

Townes Van Zandt is a wonderful songwriter, singer and guitar player. This is the best set to get as it includes 8 studio recordings on 4 CD's along with part of a show he did in Texas. Be sure to check amazon.co.uk and search as it is out of print in the United States.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb songwriting.......2004-08-02

One day, I was searching for an MP3 of an old Willie Nelson song my dad used to play, Pancho and Lefty, when I came across the version by Townes Van Zandt, who wrote it. I downloaded it out of curiosity and loved it. Much rawer, much more emotive, much more poetic than Nelson's recording. I searched for more Van Zandt songs and slowly dug my way into a catalogue that is incredible. I looked on Amazon to see which records to buy and found this, Texas Troubadour, which compiles seven studio albums and a live set -- all for price that comes out to something like seven bucks a record. I bought it and have been listening to it almost weekly for more than a year. All I can say about Townes Van Zandt is that if you appreciate great songwriting, you'll appreciate this collection. He didn't have the most radio-friendly sound; Willie Nelson and others who've covered his songs have met that challenge. But nothing beats the emotional connections of a songwriter singing and guitaring his own work. Think Bob Dylan or Neil Young or Johnny Cash or even someone like John Frusciante -- great songwriters with rough but unique voices and instantly recognizable guitar playing. Some of my favorite songs by Zandt at this moment are "Rake," "You Are Not Needed Now," "Flyin' Shoes," "Waitin' Around to Die," "Highway Kind," "Snow Don't Fall," and "Lungs." I wish I would've had the chance to know and see Van Zandt play live when he was around. At least we have his records. Do yourself a favor and buy them!

5 out of 5 stars The Poet of our times.......2003-01-02

An EXCELLENT introduction to Townes who, in my humble opinion, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. Beautifully illustrated with informative liner notes. My greatest thrill was discovering that Townes first efforts were produced by Jack Clement. My advice........buy this after you've read all the opinions and discover the joy and masterful poetry of the Texas Troubador, who we all deeply miss.

      5 out of 5 stars Texas Troubadour - Terrific/Tragic Townes Van Zandt.......2002-12-07

1000 words aren't nearly enough to descibe the experience of Townes Van Zandt. I was only lucky enough to see Townes live once and that was through a antibiotic haze following a particularly bad dose of tonsillitis. Although he was tired and reflective it remains one the music experiences of my life. He performed to a pathetically small audience in the seaside town Southport (the one they forgot to close down)England, entertained us laconoically, sensitively and uniquely and was very confused that there was a "curfew" at 11pm. Enough memories and down to business. This is a must for anyone who loves music, enjoys legends, appreciates genius and recognises something special which Townes undoubtedly was and remains through the music he gave us. His emotion is raw, his voice unique but ultimately his legacy his his song which runs the gamut of emotion which defines us all. Perfect music beautiful man. I was lucky and privaledged to catch when he was around and glad I stayed to thanked him. As Nancy Griffith's father said "he is the greatest songwriter ever from Texas" and ranks up there with the best. He had the pose of a gunfighter and the emotion of a poet. The tragedy is that he is not around today to share his success but anyone who leaves this deep legacy is well worth shouting about - whether in your cowboy boots and from Bob Dylan's coffee table or not!
Buy this and spread the word.
Thank you Townes, Thank you very much.
