At an age when most performers of their stature are either fading fast or priming for the oldies circuit, Doug Sahm, Freddie Fender, Flaco Jimenez, and Auggie Meyers regrouped and made some of the rawest, swingingest, and most memorable music of their careers. Each member puts a slightly different spin on the Tex-Mex sound and the results blaze back and forth across the boundaries of spicy rock & roll ("Adios Mexico"), Tejano ("Who Were You Thinking Of"), and honky-tonk weepers ("A Man Can Cry"). You don't have to be familiar with Mexican music or the Spanish language to love this album: Its soul knows no borders and rocks right over any resistance.

Less a band than the musical equivalent of a Tex-Mex combo platter, the Texas Tornados spotlight the complementary tastes of their four veteran members. This compilation extends from roadhouse rockers by the Sir Douglas Quintet's Doug Sahm ("Who Were You Thinkin' Of," "Adios Mexico") to novelty numbers from his quintet keyboardist Augie Meyers ("Que Paso," "Guacamole") to country and traditional Mexican balladry from Freddy Fender ("Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," "Mentiras"). The accordion virtuosity of Flaco Jimenez adds spice throughout. Since 11 cuts can barely sample the wide range of the group's individual talents, the collection serves as a better introduction than retrospective summation. --Don McLeese

Hard to find locally........2007-05-14
I live in a small town and that makes it hard to find just what I am looking for. Here I got the CD I wanted, at a great price. Shipping was fast.
Viva la Tornados.......2007-01-09
Great CD w/ all the hits. It's wonderful when "legends" come together to combine their talent.
I miss Freddy.
If you think you will like this....YOU WILL!.......2005-08-22
Like fun music? Have ecletic tastes? Like to sing along in the car by yourself? Order this baby and enjoy. Different styles amongst the four tornados make this a surprising listen, if not totally cohesive. Who cares! Have "una cerveza", enjoy, and then go buy more of their cd's.
Great introduction to the band.......2002-05-31
TEXAS TORNADOS are a TEX-MEX supergroup that I can remember playing in the jukebox when hanging at the local bars back home. Their songs are fun, lively and will get you dancing. GUACAMOLE, HEY BABY QUE PASO, are two songs that when you start listening to the lyrics will just make you bust out laughing and having a good all time. WASTED DAYS AND WASTED NIGHTS is another great song that I really enjoy. This album is just full of great songs from a band that knows how to utilize all of their collective talents and combine them together. So go out get this album and be ready to hear some good music. After this, you will want to hear more of their music and get the rest of their albums.
big storm from Texas.......2002-02-20
The Tornados are GREAT. Treasure this CD, most likely it is the last of them all together with Flaco Himenez. Fabulous Tex-Mex.

Great CD.......2007-02-20
A great collection of the Texas Tornados. You can't go wrong, every song is fabulous. Good CD to play after/during a bbq.
Superb Effort - Border Music.......2005-06-10
I love the synergy in the Texas Tornados -- for me, it's the best work of Freddy Fender and also a fine career capstone for the durable Doug Sahm. I guess you'd call this "Tex-Mex" but I think of it as "Border Music." It borders on the USA and Mexico, it borders on country, folk, and rock. There is great musicianship here, even though it's a completely casual sound. These guys have a feel for the music and it flows like water. In most of the tunes, the accordian drives the music, and you can sense the culture. If I am looking for anything to which this music might be compared, it's the folk side of Los Lobos. Great stuff.
4 Aces is a wining hand indeed!.......2000-06-20
This has to be the quintisential Tornado recording, all members of the group seem to be in tip top form, performing the fervor of teens, these "oldtimers" can still show their stuff!
A Winning Hand.......1999-06-25
These "Four Aces" may be grandfathers, but they've still got it all. From the music one hears their playfulness, their emotions, their mastery of the music, and their sensuality. Thanks, hombres, for the happy feelings I get when I listen. Don't you just love those men from Texas
Excellent. Give it a whirl........1998-07-21
These guys are masters, and they're having fun.

As the ebullient ringleader of this all-star Lone Star quartet, Doug Sahm tells this 1990 Austin City Limits crowd that "it's rock and roll conjunto time!" Such a description barely hints at the raucous vitality of the band's bilingual, Tex-Mex border music. The set (also available on DVD) finds Freddy Fender resurrecting his country smashes "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," while the tremulous vocals of some of his earlier, regional hits suggest that he is to Tejano music what Aaron Neville is to New Orleans soul. Conjunto accordion kingpin Flaco Jimenez provides rollicking instrumental accents throughout, while singing with Fender on some of the Spanish-language material. From the rock and roll side, Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers reprise their hits from the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1960s heyday, with "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino" steeped in the same musical roots they share with Fender and Jimenez. Such raucous, festive interplay plainly enjoys a home-field advantage in Austin, where the performance finds the foursome hailed as conquering heroes. (The release serves as a memorial to Sahm, who died in 1999 and to whom the album is dedicated.) --Don McLeese

Tex-Mex At it's Best !!.......2007-03-27
This is my all time favorite "cheer-me-up" album. As soon as the music starts, I just start smiling. I love the enthusiasm and the great talent that is displayed. The mingling of voices from both north and south of the border is a tribute to our southern society, showing that we all can and do get along wonderfully when we put our minds to it.
Impossible to find something better than this!!.......2006-12-30
I already wrote a review on this incredible musical event after watching
the show on DVD so my opinion on the CD version cannot be different.
The only sad thing about this is that both Doug and Freddy are not with
us anymore but we have their wonderful 1990 Austin Texas concert and
we can either listen to it or watch the incredible musical abilities
of this foursome. The best Conjunto Tex-Mex rock & roll gathering ever!!!

You can't lose..........2000-10-18
The Texas Tornados are like the reverse of the old big-box-containing-a-smaller-box-containg-a-smaller-box joke that your sister pulled on you when you opened your Christmas present. The band presents you with a brightly-colored package (graphically and musically) that seems somewhat modest at first but over time grows into a dear treasure. The songs unashamedly pluck at all the heartstrings with no apologies and you have to laugh at their brazen chutzpah. The musicians' credentials are voluminous and undeniable. The melding of Sahm-Meyers, Fender and Jimenez is a classic case of the whole being more that the sum of the parts. This Tex-Mex album is the AM-radio soundtrack for a sunny spring day driving south on Interstate 25 with the top down and a couple of shots of tequila just starting to warm your gut. Only the most pretentious or dour of listeners will fail to get a spiritual lift from this little gem. Don't cheat yourself-add Texas Tornados to your road collection.
This music will live forever.......2000-06-20
With the caliber of musicians in this band this music is destined to live forever. How will any other group hope to mach the diversity of the late Doug Sahms, from down and dirty blues to the twangy pedal steel guitar, this home grown Texas superstar will shine forever. This collection of various Tornado tunes highlights well the sound and soul of the TEXAS TORNADOS.
Everybody loves this music!.......1999-05-27
This is always a favorite to share with others on road trips. Everybody loves to sing along! The songs are sad but they make you feel so happy. Buy this album. I've had to replace it a couple of times. Can't say that about too many other items in my music collection. Have purchased it as a gift several times too for the people who've come to love it on camping trips.

Less attractive than their other recordings.......2007-02-02
The Texas Torenados are a super group, no doubt, and the essence of
conjunto tex-mex music. Most of their CD's deserve and have been given'
5 stars by me but this one is less attractive excluding the two solo
songs by Freddy Fender "Tus Mentiras" and "Trying" which are great great
great recordings and are worth the purchase of this CD. This guy was such
a wonderful artist both in English and Spanish that still today I keep
on purchasing all that's still coming out on the market both on CD and
DVD.
great music.......2001-06-29
its good music to listen too and dance, which I hav'nt done in awhile. I have listened to Feddy Fender along time ago and with this group I think there great. I have listen to other latin music, but I guess I'm the old fashion type, I grew up listening to my parents music, like the old country western as well. I like that better than the new groups. Besides I like all types of music.

Tornados: Storm or no Storm.......2007-01-25
The Austin City Limits session is my favourite burst from these guys, and that extra star is reserved for that performance. Songs just a tad more appealing, particularly Freddy Fender's weepies. It's essentially the same diet, though. Bright, breezy and as big as the western skies; a far cry from my only live performance of the late, great Sir Doug at the Bottom Line in 1978, when darker atmospherics prevailed.(and Kinky Friedman and cigar were the main act!) Flaco Jiminez's accordion is essential to the Tornado's sonics and he's got plenty of room here to stretch out.

I'm not a great lover of country-western music but the Texas Tornado's style of Tex-Mex music takes me back to my days in El Paso and some of the seedier dives in Juarez. Yeeee-hah!!!

Supergroup live albums are rare things; rarer still are those that work strictly on musical terms, rather than star fascination. This first volume of Texas Tornados concert recordings surpasses expectations partly because, after nine years together, the Tornados are no longer an uber-collaboration but instead are a road-wizened ensemble. Part Texas bar-band deluxe (as on the shout-along "Hey Baby Kep-Pa-So"), part keepers of the conjunto flame (as on Flaco Jimenez's scale-scorching accordion showcase "La Múcura/A Mover el Bote"), the Tornados have developed a swaggering on-stage personality without ever devolving into Tex-Mex jam-band territory. Blending together performances from two December '98 shows in Austin, the album lacks the thrill of a single hot night on stage (some tracks fade in and out awkwardly) but compensates with fairly gutty song selection. Familiar Tornados tunes are matched with classics by Freddy Fender ("Wasted Days") and Sir Douglas ("Mendocino"), plus a few surprises including a stirring waltz through "Eighteen Yellow Roses" and the Gene Autry warhorse "South of the Border." Jimenez, Fender, Doug Sahm, and Augie Meyers are backed by a faultless rhythm section, some R&B-style horns, and, best of all, some savory pedal steel work, all of which helps to lift these performances above the mere rehash category. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
great songs, poor recording.......2000-08-04
This would have been a great show to have witnessed. Very few live recordings have the quality of sound that we are so accustomed to these days and this is no exception. This recording does convey the spirit of the event and the sheer enjoyment of the musicians in performing. Hopefully their studio recordings have the same good qualities and good recording as well. That is what I am purchasing next and advising whoever reads this to do.
Great Music!!.......1999-07-16
Since I live in Austin, Texas, I was one of the lucky ones that was able to attend both shows from which this album was recorded. As with most live CDs, the recording cannot meausre up to the live show, but the music on this CD is great.
I agree with Amazon's review that it tends to skip around too much. I don't understand why they don't just put the songs in the order the band played them. (Nothing was better than them opening the show with the "tornado" sound and "Hey Baby Que Paso?" but here it is the last track). However, this is the only fault I can find with the CD and I will listen to it for years to come.
My only other hope is that there is a Volume 2 on the way!!

This Early Incarnation of the Texas Tornados Did Not Include the Other Two of the Three Superstars that Would Make Up "The Texas Tornados" in the Late 1980's (As Ever, Augie Meyers was Here Right by Sahm's Side), but the Moniker is Just Something Sahm Loved. It also Fits his Melange of Swing, Blues, Country and Rock
and it also Fits Sahm's Egregious Personality as Well. He was Certainly a Tornado of a Man with Boundless Energy that Propelled Him Forward to his Dying Day. Years Later, Uncle Tupelo Would Cover "Give Back the Key to My Heart" on their Album "Anodyne", but You Can Find the Original Here.

Sir Doug.......2007-04-18
It's a pity that this album is again unavailable on CD. It's not Doug's best by any means but has a few real classic tracks on it. "I Love The Way You Love The Way I Love You" is ones of Doug's best songs; written, I think, by his friend Attwood Allen (who provides fantastic back-up vocals throughout this album). Then there's "Country Groove" and "Cowboy Peyton Place", both of which reappear in Doug's catalogue. And then there's "Give Back The Key To My Heart", one of his most covered songs. Throw in "Wolverton Mountain", "Texas Ranger Man" and "You Can't Hide Your Redneck" and you have a little ripper of an album. It's a bit on the short side but then Shania puts out long albums and that doesn't make them any better. Doug's backed by his "regular" rhythm section of Jack Barber and George Rains, Augie Meyers handles keys and Attwood Allen on vox. Because Doug recorded for so many labels his catalogue looks like a dog's breakfast which is a real shame as he is/was probably the premier roots music artist in America. Bits and pieces are slowly coming onto the market from enterprising indie labels and Atlantic has done a nice box set of his time there, while Mercury did one also but both of these were "collectors" editions which went out of print quickly. Doug and Augie did a great album for the Teardrop label in the 70's called "The Westside Rolls Again" which I'm trying to get but it's like trying to find hen's teeth. Anyway, "Texas Rock For Country Rollers" is well worth hunting out as it contains quite a few classic songs and is essential for any good Doug Sahm collection.
The true Austin Godfather.......2001-04-07
Truthfully this is my first review. But when it comes to Doug I could not resist. Doug is was and always will be the man. This album originally came out in the cosmic outlaw alt-country era. It was voted Texas album of the year. The title alone is what Doug was all about to me. I was raised on rock, but could not turn a deaf ear to Doug. My fav "Give Back the Key to my Heart" along with "Cowboy Peyton Place". Buy this cd now. Then buy every cd Doug released.

Superb piece of music!.......2003-10-08
This CD is an absolute MUST for anyone admiring the sounds of not just the *Los Texas Tornados*, but for anyone wanting to hear some great Texas music. As much as their English versions of some of the songs are good, the Spanish ones make them so much more authetic, and honest - in fact, they should only be sung in Spanish.
The group, in my opinion, set the standard by which all others should be judged by in this genre.
There is nothing like jumping into a car on a nice, sunny day, poping this CD into the player, and going for a loooong drive...be in your own Universe with nothing more than you, and Los Texas Tornados for company.
Highly, highly recommended!
A MUST!!!
Different language--same good music.......2001-09-10
I don't know which language had some of these songs first. Seems that the Spanish versions of "En que pensabas tu," "Adios Mexico," and "Bonito es el Espanol" don't quite hold up to the English versions. But then, my first language is English. Spanish or English, the Texas Tornados put out some lively music, and it's all good. Great for cranking up the volume and pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist.
If you have one, then get this one too!.......2001-04-08
Los Texas Tornados (Spanish) is a must have if you have any of the groups work. I realy enjoy trying to be back on the bus and wish they could be back hitting all the clubs. Compare this with other versions and see what you think. It's all good and fun with lots of feeling. Glad they made this one!!
