It's the rare artist who virtually invents a genre single-handedly, and there's no artist in any genre whose work has remained as dominant a force as Bill Monroe. The songs here not only define bluegrass, they remain the core of any bluegrass band's repertoire. Monroe added a dose of sophistication to traditional hillbilly music--intricate group harmonies, expert musicianship--and he rehearsed his Blue Grass Boys for hours on end. MCA's lavish 4 CD set covers 60 years and 98 songs, adding detailed notes and anecdotes. Beginning with 1936 duets with brother Charlie, the list of Blue Grass Boys reads like a roster of legends: Flatt and Scruggs, Chubby Wise, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements, Sonny Osborne, Bobby Hicks, Kenny Baker, Bill Keith, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, and Richard Greene; the list goes on and on, as does the legacy of Monroe's music. --Marc Greilsamer

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22
But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.
Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.
Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25
The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

When dealing with legendary musical pioneers--whether Louis Armstrong or the Beatles or Bill Monroe--all of their recorded work is worth hearing, to say the least. This rousing May 1989 date from Charleston, West Virginia, features the wily veteran Clarence "Tater" Tate on fiddle and hits all the essential stops of a Monroe show: glorious gospel harmonies ("Beautiful Life," "Working on a Building"), fierce mandolin showcases for the master ("Southern Flavor," "Rawhide"), and a selection of Monroe's signature tunes ("Uncle Pen," "Blue Moon of Kentucky"). Sure, Monroe's high tenor may not be what it was in his heyday--he was nearly 78 years old for god's sake--but try listening to his falsetto moans and wails on "Muleskinner Blues" without getting the gooseflesh. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
