Milk Cow Blues

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Ask a country legend like George Jones or Chet Atkins, and they will tell you they learned to play and sing from the neighboring bluesman/sharecropper. Likewise B.B. King is apt to mention that he tuned in the Grand Ole Opry growing up. Thus it feels natural for country's grand old hippie Willie Nelson to record a CD of blues standards--especially since he wrote some of them (see: "Night Life"). Producer and featured guitarist Derek O'Brien lays down a funky but relaxed bed for the King of Laid-Back and some serious musical synergy with veteran guests like Dr. John and the aforementioned King. Kenny Wayne Shepherd's incendiary guitar on "Texas Flood" notwithstanding, the contributions of the younger contingent (Susan Tedeschi, Jonny Lang, Keb' Mo'), while heartfelt, seem more like perfunctory marketing ploys. Those who buy Milk Cow Blues for those names will be disappointed. Those who buy it for Willie will be delighted as he proceeds to show the youngsters (and all of us) what soul, and phrasing, and the blues are all about. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson.......2007-03-09

Bought this along with Across the Borderline. Both are absolutely brilliant. Can highly recommend them both.

4 out of 5 stars Milk Cow Blues.......2007-02-06

Great CD, however, the last song on it had a scratch. Very Willie bluesy!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2006-06-27

I've enjoyed Willie's music for years, but have gotten to love it since Teatro (my favorite). I just listened to this CD for the first time and can't believe I was not familiar with it before. It's a close second to Teatro. I love it!!! Willie can pull off singing almost anything, but his voice is all about the blues!

5 out of 5 stars Only took one listen.......2006-03-19

Only took one listen and all my skepticism was gone. Why not the blues... it's not too far a stretch from country, and certainly Willie can spice it up with his unique take on it.

I'm glad he did it!

5 out of 5 stars willie, you're still the greatest!.......2005-06-11

4 out of 5 stars Radio Transcriptions From Jack Guthrie.......2001-03-16

Jack Guthrie was the cousin of folk music great Woody Guthrie, and the two musicians grew up together in Oklahoma. Whereas Woody drew his inspiration from the Carter Family, Jack was obviously influenced by Jimmie Rodgers. He also incorporated elements of Western Swing into his music, which was a pleasant mix of country, western swing, blues and jazz. Jack Guthrie sang in a rough but serviceable voice that was much like his cousin's.

Jack Guthrie died of tuberculosis only a couple of years into his professional career, but in that short time he achieved one thing his more famous cousin did not; a hit record. "Oklahoma Hills" was an infectious and memorable tune that Jack took to the top of the charts, just as his health began to fail. The tune may have actually been written by Woody but, at least at first, Jack received the songwriting credit.

"Milk Cow Blues" is a nice surprise. These 30 songs are radio transcriptions (songs recorded exclusively for airplay on subscribing radio outlets, sort of like the King Biscuit Flower hour of its day). Guthrie is backed by a hot band featuring some terrific steel guitar. Its fun listening, and also serves to show that Jack Guthrie was a much more interesting and accomplished musician than his recordings for Capitol Records would indicate. Fans of Forties country, western swing and country boogie should appreciate this CD. As usual, Bear Family Records has done a super job with this reissue.
