Last Date's 12 tracks from a tour of California honky-tonks, places where Harris imagined a listener might get the essence of country music--which seen through these tracks more closely resembles the later-emerging alternative-country scene than most of the 1990s' commercial "young" country. She chose a program of cover tunes, no fewer than four of them either written by or associated strongly with her former leader, the late Gram Parsons. The others come from all over--Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Hank Snow, Floyd Cramer, Conway Twitty, and Buck Owens. What each gets here is a new paint job, with the Hot Band driving the tunes hard (thanks to drummer John Ware) and Harris's voice nearly crackling with intensity at times. Aside from Ware, the Hot Band lineup is not Emmylou's most acclaimed, but it is a unit fired up to tackle tunes that Harris simply claims for herself--just as slyly as she claims the top shelf in the world of live country music during her Hot Band's 15-year existence.

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.
Great set.......2004-02-03
Very happy to finally own this cd. It was only available on vinyl, until a few years ago, when Eminent Records re-released this album and CIMARRON. Lets hope they remaster other vinyl only Emmylou Harris albums such as EVANGELINE and THIRTEEN. LAST DATE is an excellent live album with her band at that time, The Hot Band. This is honestly one of her best albums, showing her vision of country music, and just giving it her own style and putting her mark on it. She never conformed to what Nashville was doing, and she ended up making brilliant music (even to this day with newer releases). She pays homage to Gram Parsons on a number of tracks including "Return of the Grievious Angel", "Devil In Disguise", "We'll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning", and "Juanita". She makes these songs sound like they were written just for her. There was a few hits from the album, cindluing "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)" (#28), "I'm Movin On" (#5), and "(Lost His Love) On Our Last Date" (#1). The bonus tracks are "Another Pot of Tea" and "Maybe Tonight" were b-sides to the singles released from the album. She does a great job of Bruce Springsteen's "Racing In The Street", and Carl Perkins' "Restless" (one of my favorites). Another highlight is the wonderful "Long May You Run". This is a great album from one of the best singers in the world, in my opinion. Check it out!

I just checked, and saw that this had been re-issued. Hallelujah! This is one of the great live albums of all time, every song is a winner. Certainly, her best album. How this was ever out of print is beyond me.

I have not heard the words to this song.
would like the to have the words to it.
My aunt like the music by Floyd Crammer
and I was just wondering what the words to the music
was and was told that Emmylou Harris had sing the song.
If you you have the words would love to have them.

Last Date - A Priceless Reminder Of Emmylou And The Hot Band.......2002-12-02
Emmylou Harris' dynamic live album Last Date was compiled from tapes of gigs in various Californian honkytonks in the early 1980's with her legendary Hot Band. Emmylou put together a diverse list of cover tunes to express her vision of what country music could and should be - a combination of both new and old influences.
The program:
Hank Snow's - 'I'm Movin' On'
Merle Haggard's - 'It's Not Love (But It's Not Bad)'
The Everly Brothers' - 'So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)'
Gram Parson's - 'Return Of The Greivous Angel'
Carl Perkin's - 'Restless'
Bruce Springsteen's - 'Racing In The Street'
Neil Young's - 'Long May You Run'
Gram Parson's - 'We'll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning'
The Flying Burrito Brothers' - 'Juanita'
Gram Parson's - 'Devil In Disguise'
Conway Twitty's - '(Lost His Love) On Our Last Date'
A Buck Owens Medley - 'Buckaroo' & 'Love's Gonna Live Here'
Two bonus tracks close the album perfectly - 'Another Pot Of Tea' & 'Maybe Tonight'.
Twenty years on, the remastered re-issue of Last Date is a classic in the Harris catalogue and a reminder of just how innovative and important west coast honkytonk is in country music.

Simply last date........2006-08-17
Dolphy first album I've heard and I love him thence. He plays on bass clarinet - Epistrophy, Hypochristmutreefuzz
flute -South street exit and You don't know what love is - maybe most beautiful flute solo I've ever heard
alto sax - The Madrig speak, the Panther walks and Miss Ann - both superb. Great music. Mix of bop and free jazz. Dolphy plays with unusual feeling and emotion.
Highly recommend.
Dolphy, at his most sensitive.......2005-09-08
Dolphy is far and away one of the most sensitive and most technically sophisticated players to ever live. His music on this date is particularly sensitive even by his standards. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. In all of Dolphy's music you can hear him stretching for something. In this album I can hear him reaching what he was always reaching for...if only just barely. His flute playing in particular is beyond words...one can almost hear his soul being set free.
It is tragic he died so young. I have heard rumors Misha is holding on to additional recordings from this meeting; if this is true I pray he releases them.
One of Dolphy's Best.......2002-12-20
Eric Dolphy's career was tragically brief and his studio output - particularly as a leader - quite small, with the result that live albums, most of them recorded in Europe with pick-up rhythm sections, account for much of his legacy. LAST DATE, recorded in Hilversum, Holland on June 2, 1964 (twenty-seven days before Dolphy's death; in fact, it wasn't his last show, nor even his last recording, but that's beside the point) is easily the best of these that I've heard, and ranks among the best of Dolphy's albums overall. The Dutch rhythm section, especially pianist Misja Mengelberg, provides an inspired context for Dolphy's matchless blowing on all three of his primary instruments, and the track selection, uniquely among Dolphy's live recordings, consists primarily of original compositions. Three of Dolphy's own numbers are featured: the alto saxophone workouts "The Madrig Speaks, the Panther Walks" (also known as "Mandrake") and "Miss Ann," both featuring the inside-out tones, slippery phrasing and indefatigable energy so characteristic of Dolphy's alto playing; and the bright, upbeat flute piece "South Street Exit," with Dolphy far better recorded here than in the undermiked version on THE ILLINOIS CONCERT. Mengelberg contributes "Hypochristmuhtreefuzz," a very Dolphyish piece which the leader essays on bass clarinet. The two covers, each over eleven minutes in length, are both masterpieces. Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy" features an exhaustive performance by Dolphy on bass clarinet, as well as nice, tight solos from Mengelberg and the others, underscoring both the significant influence of Monk's music on Dolphy and twhat a sorry loss it is to the jazz world that these two giants of the "outside" never recorded together. Back on flute, Dolphy gives the oft-covered ballad "You Don't Know What Love Is" far and away the most beautiful treatment I've heard; this may be the most outstanding of his performances on that most demanding of reed instruments. It's worth noting that LAST DATE is also unique among Dolphy's albums in giving the least disc time to alto sax numbers, as that is usually his most prominently-featured instrument. A final brief comment from Dolphy - the only recording of his voice I know of, in fact - closes out this extremely satisfying album from a truly great and underappreciated artist, which is also - fortunately - one of the easiest of his recordings to obtain.
SCANDINAVIA???? NICE BACKGROUND????.......2001-03-09
Although previous reviewers pointed out the excellent quality of the music on this disc, and none of them mentioned the not-so-excellent sound-quality (due to studio-recordings that probably were meant for radio-broadcasting), I'm forced to comment on their reviews of the sidemen. Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Jacques Schols do not just provide a NICE background; they provide an EXCELLENT basis on which Dolphy could do his thing so well. They where then, and Mengelberg and Bennink are still, part of the European Improvisation Avant Garde. Besides that, all three of them are citizens of THE NETHERLANDS, which is not a part of Scandinavia.
Now back to the music. If you like the exciting jazz-sound of the sixties, and you don't already own this album, buy it!! Dolphy will not disappoint you.
Dolphy and the European excursion.......2000-10-06
For this Dolphy fan, Last Date stands the test of time as one of his finest performances. Recommended to any jazzcat into 60's avant. Dolphy explodes on bass clarinet on his version of Monk's classic, Epistrophy. Dolphy, Epistrophy...hmmm? The drum and bass work is nothing special but the Scandanavian team does the job. The piano player (also Scandanavian) is a nice surprise with interesting melodic and rhythmic chord placements. All in all, one of Dolphy's best and one to go back to time and time again for new insights. There's even a quote from Eric after the final track. A must buy for anyone who says they're seriously into jazz.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Collection of Songs That Made Her a Star:.......2000-06-18
It was her first several motion pictures that resulted in Deanna Durbin's becoming the highest paid female star of her time; and it is from those movies that this anthology has been taken. The selections are a good mixture of everything from operatic arias to popular tunes of the day. The original recordings are over sixty years old; but modern engineering techniques have enhanced them to "better than new" sound. If you, like so many others, are rediscovering this remarkable young artist, this album will provide a great deal of pleasure...for the music, and as an excellent example of nostalgic memorabilia.

As good as light music gets.......2004-11-09
Among the several 'classics up to dates' by James Last I listend to, this is undoutably the best.
Peace, Peace, Peace...........1999-04-21
I have many CDs of the series and this is one of my favorite. I think this is very next to the volume 5 in its beauty and depth. Just beautiful and peaceful. I was mesmerised by the Spring Song(Mendelssohn), which was uniquely arranged by Last's own way. He is genious!! I highly recommend to start collecting this series with this album or volume 5.
Best in this series!!!!.......1999-01-27
In this album, the listener is in for a special treat, 11 of the best classical interpretations done by James Last. This 1977 release contains two tracks from the opera "Madame Butterfly", which are simply the finest versions of these familiar pieces I have ever heard. The Chopin piece is wonderful. There are a wide variety of different tempos evidenced in this recording. In this recording, the casual James Last fan may find himself/herself forever "hooked on" the beauty of his music. Hansi's trademark strings never sounded better!

Customer Reviews:
Beginner level in the series.......2004-11-09
I first got NO.4 in the series and liked the album a lot. Then I got this first one which turned out to be a dissapointment. The style is different and vocals are used in many of the songs in this album. But it is simply not as enjoyable as 4. I suspect the music gets better as the series goes.

Customer Reviews:
What a lovely and beautiful album!.......2002-03-15
This is my favorite of the series, actually of all James Last's. Some songs in the album may not be very popular but arranged and played very distinctively and beautifully. Especially in the night, this music will give you warmth and happiness. This will be a very good item you want to choose as a gift for your loving people. In other words, this CD must be in anyone's collection.
