Just when you figure it's safe to lump him with other ho-hum new country artists, Nashville's Craig Morgan moves up a rung, delivering both the singing and songwriting goods on his debut album. Since Craig Morgan continues to belabor the fact that he's just a regular guy, it should come as no surprise that his fourth album is nothing special. Morgan's voice is pretty ordinary, and the material leaves no country cliché unturned. If he is what he sings, Morgan is a small-town, tractor-driving, church-going, beer-drinking ("now and then"), family-loving, flag-waving, one-woman Southern man. He is, as he sings in "I Am," "just like you, baseball, and apple pie." He's also a guy whose conception of "Sweet Old Fashion Goodness" doesn't preclude an occasional "little bit of yeehaw in the hay," as he sings in the title track. Ballads bring out the best in Morgan, but he has to learn to distinguish between the disarmingly tender ("Tough") and the hokey ("The Ballad of Mr. Jenkins"). --Don McLeese

Album Description

Craig Morgan - Little Bit Of Life. When you look at the Country Music world it is made up of a lot of different types of people but there is no question that Craig Morgan is Country! Craig lives a country lifestyle, he is a dedicated family man with 4 children, a former Army Ranger and an avid outdoorsman. He drives Ford trucks has 4 dogs and his favorite album of all time is John Conlee's Greatest Hits. This new album reflects his passion for a country life. In concert and on his CD's Craig is able to express his emotions and reverence for that life and his fans love that about him. 2005 was a very busy year for Craig Morgan. The release of My Kind Of Livin' marked his 3rd album release. The 1st single from that album " "That's What I Love About Sunday" served notice to Country fans, radio and retail that this was the beginning of something very special. "Sunday" went on to the #1 position at radio and held that spot for 5 consecutive weeks and ended the year as the MOST PLAYED single of the year. The follow-up single "Redneck Yacht Club" continued that pattern and made its way to the #1 position as well. Craig Morgan was one of only 3 artists to have back to back #1 singles during the year and to top it all off Craig was nominated for an ACM award in the Top New Male Vocalist category. Not bad for a kid from Kingston Springs, TN.

This album is outstanding. With all of today's "pop" country, it is so nice to hear a country album that is truly country. This album is a must have for any country fan, as well as any casual fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer.......2007-05-13

I really like Craig Morgan's "Little Bit of Life." It is a wonderful album and I am looking forward to his concert at our fair in August.

3 out of 5 stars Nice country CD.......2007-04-01

I liked especially "Little Bit of Life" which to tell the truth, prompted me to buy since I had heard it over the radio and it kind of grew on me; the ballad "Tough" is excellent and I think that a lot of people will be able to relate to it. "I guess you had to be there" is a good fun song, that kind that ought to be played more over the radio, as well as "Nothin' goin' wrong around here". I am giving it 3 stars only because I would have liked more songs with some more "oomph" in them such as "Little bit of Life" in this CD, but if you are in doubt whether to buy, don't mind me, it's a good CD, go ahead and get it, you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-01-12

Who could not love the voice of this man!! I first heard Craig Morgan at a small venue concert where I had gone to see someone else. I had never even heard of him but when that voice came out...I knew I would never forget him! He is one of the best country singers today and really should get more credit.....I've never heard such a strong and perfect voice! His music is so down to earth and he reaches everyone in his writing...don't miss out on this one!!

Craig Morgan was seen as just another also-ran with his eponymous first album in 2000, even as there was much about his debut that promised more. Then, when no one was looking, his second album, I Love It, yielded "Almost Home," which garnered a buzz in even the most jaded Nashville circles. Now comes CD number three. An album track, "That's What I Love About Sunday," a soulful melody wedded to a lyric about the joys of a lazy weekend--church, coupon clipping, loving--surprised a lot of folks by grabbing the No. 1 spot on the singles charts for four straight weeks, marking the first time an indie single had done so since the Kendalls' "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" in 1977. Chances are, several songs from this lively CD will follow on the charts, particularly "Blame Me," which finds Brad Paisley and John Conlee joining forces to take credit (hopefully tongue-in-cheek) for country's current popularity. Several tracks ("I'm Country," "Redneck Yacht," and "In My Neighborhood," which references a plastic coon dog as a hood ornament) work the populist theme to death. But Morgan, who wrote 8 out of the 12 cuts, also knows how to deliver a hurtin' ballad ("That's When I'll Believe That You're Gone") and a grateful love song ("I Got You"). Watch this ol' boy finally take his rightful place as a cornbread contender. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Best Country CD I've heard in a LONG Time.......2007-05-08

I'll admit it I'm a "rare" country music fan; I like some, dislike most as most have turned into wannabe rock stars ... well ... my sister knows this band and when he came to my town, I got to meet the band, hang out with them and meet Craig.

Then came the concert and all I can say is WOW ... this man is amazing. his voice is awesome, his music is fresh ... and refreshing. He is a man with a country core ... values and faith and I now can't get enough of his music.

Listen to it and I mean REALLY LISTEN to it and you, too will be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars My kind of livin.......2007-02-24

Enjoy the music, and like especially one song on the cd.

3 out of 5 stars I really enjoy the an underated Craig Morgan.......2006-08-20

Craig Morgan's choice of songs is quite good and diverse. He especially is not afraid to include some excellet songs of a spiritual nature.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening!.......2006-01-12

I found out Craig would be performing at a festival I attend every year, and decided to buy this CD in preparation. That was back in September of 2005, and this CD has rarely left my player since! I know all the words by heart and it doesn't matter if I've listened to "Redneck Yacht Club" a thousand times on the radio, it still sounds fresh.

"That's What I Love About Sunday" is a relaxing tune about Sundays, from church services to Sunday afternoon naps. "I'm Country" is my absolute favorite. The chorus is catchy and it is hard not to find yourself singing along to words like "White beans, collard greens, sweet tea, chicken and dumplins"! The serious tracks are well-written, and you can hear the emotion in Craig's voice. "Lotta Man (In that Little Boy)" tells the story of a young boy who seems to be more grown up than other kids his age. The funner songs, like "Redneck Yacht Club", will have you singing along!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for ANY country cd collection!!!.......2005-10-11

This new cd by Craig Morgan is one of the few new country albums I purchased this year, simply due to the fact that many albums that came out where just not that good. Craig Morgan really has a way that he sings that just makes you think, "Boy, can this guy sing or what?!" The album has that pure country sound that so many country albums seem to be lacking nowadays. There are tearjerkers, slow dance, and just some really fun songs wrapped up in this album. What follows are the song titles which I have rated 1-5, 5 being the best, but this is just one person's opinion, but I think you will find you agree with me after you hear these fabulous songs!!!

I never heard of Craig Morgan before until last night when I went to a concert for Trace Adkins...well Craig Morgan opened for him and let me tell you he is awesome! What a great voice, kind of like Randy Travis. He is going to go places. Highly recommend this CD to any country fans....and lucky me...Trace Adkins in the same night!

I recently bought this CD and it stays in my car for my ride to work. Its very good not too upbeat or to mellow. A little bit of both. It probably would appeal to those looking for a more traditional sound of country music, but it has a fresh, new flare also.

And while the gimmicky horns and synthesizers on "Ev'rything's a Thing" prove Morgan is far from saccharine-proof, the rocker "It's Me" (with its hints of a young Buck Owens drawl) gives hope that there is even more tiger in the tank. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-08

This CD was very good. I just recently just started purchasing his CD's, heard one of his songs and ordered the cd, excellent voice. I am now purchasing all of his cd's

4 out of 5 stars Nothing flashy, just good country music!.......2004-07-11

Craig Morgan's self-titled debut lacks something his follow up--and breakthrough--"I Love It" does not; but what it is is hard to say. It probably doesn't even matter that much--this is still a good album. It was when it came out a few years ago and launched his career, and it's still good now, especially if you're enjoying Morgan's latest hits ("Almost Home," "Every Other Friday At Five," and "Look At Us").

Certainly this is a traditional album. While he does get his grove on here and there ("Something to Write Home About," the honky-tonking Bakersfield romp "It's Me," the tongue-in-cheek attitude of Joe Nichol's "Ev'rything's a Thing" and "Hush"), he remains his best on the ballads. From the beautiful tributes of "Walking in My Father's Shoes" and "I Wish I Could See Bakersfield," to the stone-cold-country of "When a Man Can't Get a Woman Off His Mind," Morgan reminds us why country music is about the common man and his emotions. He takes a look at his own military career in the touching "Paradise;" comes to terms with love lost in "I Want Us Back" and "Everywhere I Go;" and reminisses in the poignant "302 South Maple Avenue."

This self-titled debut is an album for die-hard country music fans--those of you who like your music with twang and heart. Craig Morgan has largely managed to avoid the pop-edge of most of radio's biggest hits; maybe that's why it's taken a while for country radio to notice him. Nevertheless, he's here, and he's writing and singing for you. Get this CD, and discover what country music is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Craig Morgan is the real deal........2003-10-01

He can really sing - songwriting is excellent as well. When I first heard Almost Home I felt the same way as I did when I first heard Garth Brooks. I got Craig's first & second cd from listening to that release. Good variety of material on both his cds.

Worth the money for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Captures the American Spirit.......2003-02-08

Craig's album speaks to all American's. Yes he was a soldier (and still is in his heart), but his music transcends that of just the military. His songs range from small town experiences as a child to reflective thoughts on aging and looking back at our all too short lives.
On a personal note, Craig Morgan just completed a USO Tour of AFGHANISTAN. While visiting us I believe he spent more hours awake and entertaining soldiers (often by fireside) than some of us here on a tour of duty may have. He continually and sincerely thanked all of your servicemen and women for their dedication to God and our great Nation. He is truly a role model and his music will speak to your heart, through your soul.
I highly recommend this album, as well as his new album "I LOVE IT" (which he gave freely to all service members here) as a well-worn and oft played addition to your listening collection.

4 out of 5 stars A new country star, not a pop star.......2002-01-20

"When A Man Can't Get Can't A Woman Off His Mind" is destined to become a classic. It has the right instrumentation, melody and lyrics. Craig picked a home run song when he chose Bill Anderson's "When A Man Can't Get Can't A Woman Off His Mind".
One of the many songs Craig wrote from this album is "Paradise" which I would think would be climbing the charts with it's military theme. (maybe we should wonder about "the charts".)
"Hush" also has the makings of a great country song. If you enjoy Dale Watson's songs, give Craig a try.

Among the recently discovered works by Czech-Jewish composers written at the concentration camp Terezín (a way-station to the Nazi gas chambers) was the children's opera Brundibár (Czech for "bumblebee") by Hans Krása, born in Prague in 1899 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. Performed by the camp's children 55 times - with the cast changing as the performers were deported and killed - it became a symbol of the prisoners' undaunted creativity. Assessing the purely musical quality of the Terezín works is almost impossible in view of the wrenching circumstances of their inception and the composers' still developing talents and creative powers. The miracle is that they exist at all.

The music of Brundibár is a mix of pleasant pop tunes, jazz, patter songs, a bit of Stravinsky and a lot of Kurt Weill. The singers speak more than they sing; the ensembles, from duets to chorus, are almost entirely in unison. The orchestration (here as well as in the fast, rhythmically pungent Overture) is colorful and inventive. The story: a brother and sister try to collect money to buy their sick mother milk by singing and dancing in the street but are drowned out and scared away by the organ-grinder Brundibár. A sparrow, a cat, and a dog suggest that there is strength in numbers. When passing schoolchildren join their songs, they attract attention and donations. The moral: ask for help, take a stand, don't submit to bullying! Unfortunately, the famous Tony Kushner's English adaptation of the libretto is distressingly infelicitous; he even misspells "Aninka," the sister's name. The performance, using adult voices, is excellent. The settings by the American composer Lori Laitman (b. 1955) of five poems by children murdered in the death camps capture the mood and character of the texts with uncanny empathy, from bitter humor and defiance to dreamy tenderness, soaring lyricism, and heartbreaking sadness. This is a new arrangement for soprano and clarinet (another version with bassoon was performed in New York in 2001 by the Festival Chamber Music Society). --Edith Eisler
