Emmylou Harris focuses more intently on her country ancestry with this 1979 record, tackling songs made famous by Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, and the Louvin Brothers. However, the most rewarding cuts are the lesser-known gems: Willie Nelson's rollicking "Sister's Coming Home" (with Tanya Tucker), Dallas Frazier's aching ballad "Beneath Still Waters" (which hit No. 1 for Harris), and Jean Ritchie's moving folk song "Sorrow in the Wind." Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt help out on "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," while Lincoln Davis's accordion beefs up the Flatt & Scruggs classic "Rough and Rocky." This record, Harris's fifth for Reprise, signals the end of her classic country-rock period. She would unplug completely for 1980's superb Roses in the Snow before breaking up with producer-husband Brian Ahern and pointing herself in new directions. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Emmylou at her best.......2007-05-26

This remains one of my favorite country albums, and with new bonus tracks, it's just that much better. Not only does Emmylou cover some of country's classics here, but this CD is extremely well-polished, and musically one of her finest works. "Sorrow In The Wind", with help from Sharon and Cheryl White, is one of the unheralded gems on this collection, and "Hickory Wind" and "Rough And Rocky" are excellent, soulful pieces that showcase her range and the sweet, soulful sound of her voice. "Sister's Coming Home" with Tanya Tucker is a rollicking fast-stepper, and her rendition of "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" remains the best I've heard of that song. If you're new to Emmylou Harris, and looking for a sampling of her work without investing huge bucks, this is a perfect addition to your collection. If you want a more detailed, thorough portrait of Emmylou, go with "Portraits", a 3-disc boxed set, which covers most of the highlights of her career.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-02-20

In my opinion this is the best album made by Emmylou Harris and one of the best you can buy in the field of country music period. I have never understood why Emmylou has received so little notice in the mainstream media or press, because she is one of the best ever.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary and Complete Musical Experience.......2006-04-18

Emmylou had a string of phenomenal records on Reprise from 1975 through and including this release in 1979, but this one holds up as a cohesive, dreamy, almost perfect explication of her vision and musical personality. While for the most part eschewing covers of popular and rock songs and reaching back to her musical roots, Emmy rediscovers the lilting, pure beauty of her voice, harmony, and acoustic guitar. She is joined by fantastic musicians such as Ricky Skaggs on fiddle, Ronnie Tutt (later of the Jerry Garcia Band) on drums, the great Elvis guitarist James Burton, Albert Lee, and others.

It all works. Her cover of "Save the Last Dance for Me" should have been the benchmark version of this Doc Pomus staple, but she makes it all her own. She tries on Willie Nelson's "Sister's Coming Home," again making it personal and dramatic.

"Beneath Still Waters" is beautiful and haunting, the emotional anchor to the album. As a Byrds fan I was pleased and surprised by her version of "Hickory Wind," taking it places Gram Parson never did. And "Blue Kentucky Girl" and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" sound effortless and perfect, with swirling harmonies provided by Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstadt.

Bonus tracks include an interesting harmonic diversion with Glen Campbell and songs that add to the overall experience of the album, a treasure trove of great music, great harmonies, and great instrumentation.

5 out of 5 stars Harris is VERY talented!!.......2006-03-28

Worth every cent! Harris is maturing on this CD. Not so commercial, but excellent none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional country masterpiece.......2005-04-09

Blue Kentucky Girl is a real roots country album, both in the sound and the nature imagery of the songs, as is obvious from titles like Beneath Still Waters, Hickory Wind, Sorrow In The Wind and Rough & Rocky.

The rhythmic uptempo number Sister's Coming Home with its great fiddle opens the album, and is followed by the stirring slow ballad Beneath Still Waters. Hickory Wind is the Gram Parsons song, and of course Emmylou makes it her own with a soulful, delicate interpretation. The execution is quite different from her duet with Gram Parsons.

This recording of Save The Last Dance For Me is probably the definite version by now, whilst Sorrow In The Wind is a poignant gentle song full of yearning, where the harmony vocals of Cheryl and Sharon White are almost magical.

Other beautiful voices that contribute to this gem of an album are Don Everly on Everytime You Leave, and Ricky Skaggs and Fayssoux Starling on They'll Never Take His Love From Me. The title track and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues are rhythmic mid-tempo ballads with strong melodies.

The two extra tracks include Cheating Is, an atmospheric ballad with Glen Campbell and the sorrowful I Know An Ending When It Comes, where her voice shines in glory. My favorite sequence on the album is the one from Hickory Wind to Sorrow In The Wind, as Harris takes the listener to places one seldom goes.

Blue Kentucky Girl is amongst her very best work and stands proudly next to Roses In The Snow, Cowgirl's Prayer, Pieces Of The Sky and the more recent classics like Red Dirt Girl and Wrecking Ball. As always, a wise selection of great songs, beautifully interpreted.

5 out of 5 stars Loretta Lynn at Her Classic Best .......2005-09-30

A great low-cost introduction to the great Loretta Lynn at her peak! This collection of vintage originals includes many of her most legendary songs including COAL MINER's DAUGHTER. All of the songs on the album were big smashes for Loretta with the exception of ANOTHER MAN LOVED ME LAST NIGHT which was just an album track from her original CMD album and not a single release. It's a superb performance and worth remembering but one wonders how it got onto this collection. And very curiously, why is one of Loretta's early smashes BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL renamed BLUE EYED KENTUCKY GIRL here (and also used for the title of the CD). Certainly there are far more comphrensive Loretta CDS out there but this low-price set is a wonderful choice to give as a gift to friends who may not yet be Loretta fans and who no doubt will become one after this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Safe Choice!.......2005-09-21

Loretta Lynn from Butcher Holler, Kentucky had 69 Billboard hits from 1960 to 1985. That statistic comes from Joel Whitburn's "Billboard Book of Top 40 Country Hits". 9 of the 10 tracks on this CD made the charts between 1965 ("Blue Kentucky Girl") and 1981 ("Somebody Led Me away"). That range alone demonstrates Loretta's wonderful longevity in a tough business. "Blue-Eyed Kentucky Girl" will not disappoint the serious country fan. Favorite tracks are always subjective but this listener was captivated by a moody "What Kind of A Girl Do You Think I Am?" (1967). Other fine tracks are "The Home You're Tearin' Down" (1965) and the aforementioned "Somebody Led Me Away". The only possible weakness to this release is the absence of any of those classic duets with the late Conway Twitty. That minor point aside, "Blue Eyed Kentucky Girl" is a perfectly safe choice for country fans. One only has to actually locate this album among the plethora of Loretta choices.

4 out of 5 stars Some of Loretta Lynn's best.......2000-08-01

"Blue-eyed Kentucky Girl" is basically a compilation CD, but one that is worth having! Highlighting some of her most memorable songs from around the early 1970s, like the timeless "Coal Miner's Daughter" and groundbreaking "The Pill," the album features both slower-tempo hits like "Somebody Led Me Away" to her more fast-paced numbers ("Rated X"). This CD showcases what Loretta does best, country songs from her own point of view, a woman's point of view, but both men and women will enjoy listening. If you want a collection highlighting Loretta's best songs, this is the CD to have, and at a very reasonable price!

3 out of 5 stars Second Rate Civil War Music.......2004-07-17

This potporri of Civil war tunes played by a selection of US service bands falls short on many levels. For one thing the CD is under 60 mins and yet is a top priced item. Also, many of the selections on here are copied from other Altissimo titles. So there is not much original music here. Its hard to know why "Amazing Grace" is here other than just for additional filler. Yes, the tune was known back then, but its hardly Civil War era music! Altissimo! just threw it in to add a few minutes more to this CD. The linear notes are an improvement from the none-existant ones of the past, but overall this is a second rate Civil War CD. The modern arrangments of the music also do not carry very well.

5 out of 5 stars This album is a Treasure!.......2007-01-16

This is one of those very special albums that we play over and over and never grow tired of. The songs always make me feel better, the harmony, the band, it all came together 100% on this album. I only wish there were more like it!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but not much variety in mood and tempo..........2004-08-09

This 1979 Emmy release was her most "country" up until that time, and while I am a "country" fan as well as an Emmy fan, this LP suffers just a little from having nearly all the tracks sound too much alike. Emmy has made so many albums that it is natural to dislike some...I, for one, didn't care for "Wrecking Ball" and believe that "Angel Band" is superior. That must certainly be a minority view! I wanted to love this 2004 remaster with two bonus tracks, and I expected to love it as much as the previous reviewers. Somehow, I don't. I'll play it, but not really often. Perhaps I have heard too much of Emmy over too many decades, and have moved on in my tastes. I can't fault her singing or the accompaniment here. I suppose my problem is song selection more than anything else. Nothing on this CD really grabs my heart and compels me to hear it again soon. So it is competent, but not quite great. My first Emmy LP was "Profile", a compilation of her early hits, and I still think that is a fine collection. If you are new to Emmy Lou, I'd suggest starting with that one.

5 out of 5 stars Emmylou at her absolute best.......2003-12-18

If Emmylou had a single best recording, this might be it. Ostensibly a departure from her first four country-rock albums and a move into pure country, that description is an oversimplification. The sound here is much like that on Emmylou's preceding four recordings, and there are moments of guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle that have a bluegrass flavor you might expect to hear only on her "Roses in the Snow" album if you believed everything you read in music guides. What is distinctive about this recording is more the pure country song selection than any difference in instrumental style between this and her other albums. What makes it special to me is not that it is consistently excellent, which is the case for most of Emmylou's early albums, but that the level of excellence rises beyond that of most of those amazing recordings, partly due to the particularly well-chosen material and partly due to absolutely breathtaking performances of that material. She was in her best voice, and by now knew how to use it to milk every bit of emotion from each song.

As one reviewer noted below, this CD is worth the purchase price just for "Hickory Wind". This is the quintessential Gram Parsons song, and the most moving rendition of it imaginable. From earlier covers of his material to her country-rock opera based loosely on their relationship, "The Ballad of Sally Rose", Emmylou has paid tribute to her mentor. But here she does so eloquently not only with her remarkable version of this one great song, but in the way the entire album captures the sweet aching feel of country music that Parsons tried to bring to the Woodstock generation, young people much more interested in rock music but open to new ideas. Nowhere else in her discography does Emmylou perform this particular feat so very well. This is where she conveys Parsons' message with all her heart and soul.

Beyond "Hickory Wind", there are absolutely gorgeous versions of "Beneath Still Waters", "Sorrow In The Wind", "Everytime You Leave", and the title track. As others have written, of the many other recordings of the song, none stands up to Emmylou's version of "Save The Last Dance For Me". I'm not quite as fond of "Sister's Coming Home", "Rough and Rocky", or "They'll Never Take His Love From Me" as songs, but the performances are superb, and on any other early Emmylou album they'd have been among the best compositions - she just raised the bar so very high on this recording. At her finest here, she takes a mediocre Rodney Crowell song, loosely inspired by the then-trendy Tom Robbins book, and makes "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" a rousing finale to a near-perfect album.

For anyone who is at all a fan of Emmylou's early years, this is bound to be a favorite. Many prefer "Roses In The Snow", and I have a soft spot for "Last Date", which perfectly captures the magic of her live shows of the early 80's. But even if you don't agree this is her absolute best, it's unlikely you'll think it's less than magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars Convert someone to country..........2003-11-10

Emmylou Harris seems to be a name that everyone knows, but country music fans know the name intimately. Fans of rock likely know Harris by her amazing backing vocals on Bob Dylan's "Desire" or by her more recent recordings that are a bit misplaced in the country sections of CD stores.

Country music used to be anathema to me (I was raised on classic and alternative rock, etc), but my mind finally opened, and this album is one of the reasons I'm glad it did. This is a country album - it's not crossover or experimental country or anything like that - it's pure electrified country. The first few twanging notes of "Sister's Coming Home" will tell any listener that. The highlights of the album tend to be more mellow in tempo: "Beneath Still Waters" is a haunting ballad (which I've also heard was a well-deserved country hit); "Hickory Wind" is another standout ballad that begins sparsely and treads on with little accompaniment apart from slide guitar and fiddle; it's one of the best songs on the album, and it sticks in the head (save a melancholy neuron for it). The most heartbreakingly beautiful ballad on the album is "Sorrow in the Wind" - the incredible harmonies dance up your spine and may induce wailing. Some of the songs are instantly recognizable (at least to some generations): "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Everytime You Leave" are well-known country standards.

After hearing this album, it's now obvious why Emmylou Harris is such a well-known name. She has recorded some of the best country music available. Her reputation is well-deserved. It would take a very stubborn fan of rock to not warm up to this great album. Country music is the direct descendant of American folk music (rock is too, but not as directly), and the influence of early folk can even be heard on this album, regardless of the twangy electric guitars and drum kits. I never thought I'd say this, but thanks to this album I'm now a country music fan.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Emmylou album.......2003-09-13

Emmylou has recorded many brilliant albums throughout her career but the string of albums that she recorded between 1975 and 1980 are ultimately her most important legacy. Everybody has his or her favorite - this is mine, perhaps because traditional country is what I like best, and that's what this album is filled with.

The set opens with Sister's coming home, an up-tempo song written by Willie Nelson, on which Tanya Tucker joins Emmylou for an incredible duet. I love Willie's music, but Emmylou and Tanya's version of this song is far superior to Willie's original.

Next comes the superb ballad, Beneath still waters, a hitherto obscure George Jones song, which provided Emmylou with a country number one hit. Even better is Save the last dance for me, also a huge country hit for Emmylou. I've heard countless versions of this song including the original Drifters version as well as brilliant covers by Buck Owens and others, but this is the best I've ever heard.

Among the other great covers here are Rough and rocky (Flatt and Scruggs), Hickory wind (a Gram Parsons song that first appeared on the classic album Sweethearts of the rodeo by the Byrds), Sorrow in the wind (Jean Ritchie - the song is sometimes titled Sweet sorrow in the wind), They'll never take his love from me (Hank Williams) and Every time you leave (Louvin Brothers) - with Don Everly.

The title track, Blue Kentucky girl, was an early Loretta Lynn country hit that might have faded into obscurity but for Emmylou's revival of it.

The album closes with one of my favorite country songs, Even cowgirls get the blues. Written by Rodney Crowell and with friends Dolly and Linda joining in, this is brilliant, although more restrained than Lynn Anderson's rousing up-tempo version, which is equally brilliant. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings later recorded the song on their Heroes duet album, and they also did a great job with it.

As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best albums ever recorded by anybody in any genre of music.

4 out of 5 stars Symphonic bluegrass from Burchland is a classy combination.......2004-02-24

A dozen musicians in black and white formal attire take the stage, the concertmaster sounds an "A" note, and the strings tune. Some additional players in plaid shirts saunter out to some mics aligned in front. Conductor Jeffrey Reed raises his baton, and the orchestra launches into a fiddle tune like Tommy Jackson's "Cherokee Shuffle." Symphonic bluegrass is nothing new. In 1974, guitarist Mason Williams first introduced his Concert for Bluegrass and Orchestra with the Wolf Trap Symphony and Denver Symphony. Thirty years ago, the introduction of a bluegrass section into an orchestra was considered a cultural revolution of sorts. Now, the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra has collaborated with resophonic guitarist Curtis Burch and seven bluegrass friends to produce "Burchland."

Dr. Charles W. Smith, professor emeritus at Western Kentucky University, was commissioned to compose a work. He knew little about bluegrass and virtually nothing of fiddling as compared to playing the violin. Spending more time learning about the instruments and style than writing the work, Dr. Smith then set to work composing the two movements of "Burchland." The first movement, "Friends" spans eight minutes and is based around a love tune written for his granddaughter. The second movement, "Pickin' Party," is about the same time length and was inspired by bluegrass musicians' love for jamming. The orchestral introduction, borrowed from a piece called "Cumberland Gap" which was written in 1996 for saxophone ensemble, evokes a pioneer spirit and feelings of happiness and optimism. The remainder of "Pickin' Party" allows the pickers to do some things, and the orchestra others, in a kind of amusing and competitive "bluegrassical" dialogue. The result is a synergy, something better than either could do alone.

Curtis Burch, born in 1945 in Montgomery, Alabama, is well known in bluegrass circles. He's played with Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson and John Cowan in the New Grass Revival in the 1970s. He's toured with artists like Leon Russell and John Hartford. Burch has recorded on many projects and is featured on Sugar Hill Record's Grammy award-winning "Great Dobro Sessions." More recently, Curtis and Norman Blake recorded "You Are My Sunshine" on the soundtrack of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," and Curtis appears on an innovative band project called "Soulgrass." On "Burchland," he is joined by Ruth Burch (guitar, vocals), Ricky Burch (banjo, vocals), Chris Brandstatt (guitar), Paul McCoy (bass), David Roemer (mandolin), Joel Whittinghill (fiddle), and Sharon Whittinghill (guitar, hammered dulcimer).

The Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra's mission is to "change lives...one note at a time" through music education and exciting concerts featuring a wide variety of music from the classical repertoire to Ragtime, Beatles, Bluegrass and Broadway. They attempt to "wow" their audiences. I was particularly impressed with Julianna Waller's violin, Mark Berry's and Webb Hendrix's percussion, Charles Smith's flute, John Cipolla's clarinet, Janet Bass Smith's piano, and Michael Thurman's horn in the orchestral bluegrass arrangements.

Following the debut of the commissioned and studio-recorded title piece, the remainder of the album includes live cuts of covers from Ruth Franks, Johnny Mullins, Karla Bonoff, Rodney Dillard, Townes Van Zandt and others. Some, primarily the slower numbers, work better than others for the motley mix of musicians and orchestral arrangement. Kudos go to Pam Thurman for most of the orchestration. Although hard to categorize, "Burchland" demonstrates creativity, and a willingness to experiment and take risks. It doesn't fit the standard sideboards of bluegrass, but it instead presents the music in a different light. The album puts a different context to the genre. Because "Burchland" is a hybrid, akin to a cultural exchange project, both bluegrass and orchestral snobs might have a difficult time understanding or appreciating it. That would be unfortunate. In reality, bluegrassers should like hearing their favorite and familiar music in an unusual setting. Classical music fans should like the frolicking, fun-filled, and festive atmosphere of this disc. Symphonic bluegrass from Burchland is a classy combination. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Album Description

Get ready for the most amazing harmonies and most intricately arranged ragtime vocals you have ever heard. Here, for the first time ever, are the complete releases by the first supergroup of the acoustic recording industry. The Heidelberg Quintet combined the singular talents of the hottest star of the day, Billy Murray, with a top-notch performer whose fame was rapidly growing because of the amazing high notes he could reach with his natural voice—Will Oakland. Together with seasoned veterans John Bieling, Steve Porter, and William F. Hooley, these singers laid down harmonies that latter-day barbershop quartets dream of!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2005-03-04

I've been buying a fair amount of very old recordings lately, and I have enjoyed this one more than most. Will Oakland has a high, strong voice that is distinctive and almost sweet-at least on Emmett's Lullaby, Tennessee Moon, and a few of the other standouts. Unfortunately, it appears this is the only recording of his work available. Billy Murray is also a top notch singer, as on Waiting for the Robert E. Lee. The sound quality here is as good as anything prior to 1925 (these songs were recorded in 1912-1914). Basically, this is high quality barbershop quartet music with an excellent falsetto voice that often sings lead.
