Emmylou Harris focuses more intently on her country ancestry with this 1979 record, tackling songs made famous by Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, and the Louvin Brothers. However, the most rewarding cuts are the lesser-known gems: Willie Nelson's rollicking "Sister's Coming Home" (with Tanya Tucker), Dallas Frazier's aching ballad "Beneath Still Waters" (which hit No. 1 for Harris), and Jean Ritchie's moving folk song "Sorrow in the Wind." Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt help out on "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," while Lincoln Davis's accordion beefs up the Flatt & Scruggs classic "Rough and Rocky." This record, Harris's fifth for Reprise, signals the end of her classic country-rock period. She would unplug completely for 1980's superb Roses in the Snow before breaking up with producer-husband Brian Ahern and pointing herself in new directions. --Marc Greilsamer

Emmylou at her best.......2007-05-26
Excellent CD.......2007-02-20
An Extraordinary and Complete Musical Experience.......2006-04-18
It all works. Her cover of "Save the Last Dance for Me" should have been the benchmark version of this Doc Pomus staple, but she makes it all her own. She tries on Willie Nelson's "Sister's Coming Home," again making it personal and dramatic.
"Beneath Still Waters" is beautiful and haunting, the emotional anchor to the album. As a Byrds fan I was pleased and surprised by her version of "Hickory Wind," taking it places Gram Parson never did. And "Blue Kentucky Girl" and "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" sound effortless and perfect, with swirling harmonies provided by Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstadt.
Bonus tracks include an interesting harmonic diversion with Glen Campbell and songs that add to the overall experience of the album, a treasure trove of great music, great harmonies, and great instrumentation.
Harris is VERY talented!!.......2006-03-28
Traditional country masterpiece.......2005-04-09
The rhythmic uptempo number Sister's Coming Home with its great fiddle opens the album, and is followed by the stirring slow ballad Beneath Still Waters. Hickory Wind is the Gram Parsons song, and of course Emmylou makes it her own with a soulful, delicate interpretation. The execution is quite different from her duet with Gram Parsons.
This recording of Save The Last Dance For Me is probably the definite version by now, whilst Sorrow In The Wind is a poignant gentle song full of yearning, where the harmony vocals of Cheryl and Sharon White are almost magical.
Other beautiful voices that contribute to this gem of an album are Don Everly on Everytime You Leave, and Ricky Skaggs and Fayssoux Starling on They'll Never Take His Love From Me. The title track and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues are rhythmic mid-tempo ballads with strong melodies.
The two extra tracks include Cheating Is, an atmospheric ballad with Glen Campbell and the sorrowful I Know An Ending When It Comes, where her voice shines in glory. My favorite sequence on the album is the one from Hickory Wind to Sorrow In The Wind, as Harris takes the listener to places one seldom goes.
Blue Kentucky Girl is amongst her very best work and stands proudly next to Roses In The Snow, Cowgirl's Prayer, Pieces Of The Sky and the more recent classics like Red Dirt Girl and Wrecking Ball. As always, a wise selection of great songs, beautifully interpreted.

This album is a Treasure!.......2007-01-16
Beautiful, but not much variety in mood and tempo..........2004-08-09
Emmylou at her absolute best.......2003-12-18
As one reviewer noted below, this CD is worth the purchase price just for "Hickory Wind". This is the quintessential Gram Parsons song, and the most moving rendition of it imaginable. From earlier covers of his material to her country-rock opera based loosely on their relationship, "The Ballad of Sally Rose", Emmylou has paid tribute to her mentor. But here she does so eloquently not only with her remarkable version of this one great song, but in the way the entire album captures the sweet aching feel of country music that Parsons tried to bring to the Woodstock generation, young people much more interested in rock music but open to new ideas. Nowhere else in her discography does Emmylou perform this particular feat so very well. This is where she conveys Parsons' message with all her heart and soul.
Beyond "Hickory Wind", there are absolutely gorgeous versions of "Beneath Still Waters", "Sorrow In The Wind", "Everytime You Leave", and the title track. As others have written, of the many other recordings of the song, none stands up to Emmylou's version of "Save The Last Dance For Me". I'm not quite as fond of "Sister's Coming Home", "Rough and Rocky", or "They'll Never Take His Love From Me" as songs, but the performances are superb, and on any other early Emmylou album they'd have been among the best compositions - she just raised the bar so very high on this recording. At her finest here, she takes a mediocre Rodney Crowell song, loosely inspired by the then-trendy Tom Robbins book, and makes "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" a rousing finale to a near-perfect album.
For anyone who is at all a fan of Emmylou's early years, this is bound to be a favorite. Many prefer "Roses In The Snow", and I have a soft spot for "Last Date", which perfectly captures the magic of her live shows of the early 80's. But even if you don't agree this is her absolute best, it's unlikely you'll think it's less than magnificent.
Convert someone to country..........2003-11-10
Country music used to be anathema to me (I was raised on classic and alternative rock, etc), but my mind finally opened, and this album is one of the reasons I'm glad it did. This is a country album - it's not crossover or experimental country or anything like that - it's pure electrified country. The first few twanging notes of "Sister's Coming Home" will tell any listener that. The highlights of the album tend to be more mellow in tempo: "Beneath Still Waters" is a haunting ballad (which I've also heard was a well-deserved country hit); "Hickory Wind" is another standout ballad that begins sparsely and treads on with little accompaniment apart from slide guitar and fiddle; it's one of the best songs on the album, and it sticks in the head (save a melancholy neuron for it). The most heartbreakingly beautiful ballad on the album is "Sorrow in the Wind" - the incredible harmonies dance up your spine and may induce wailing. Some of the songs are instantly recognizable (at least to some generations): "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Everytime You Leave" are well-known country standards.
After hearing this album, it's now obvious why Emmylou Harris is such a well-known name. She has recorded some of the best country music available. Her reputation is well-deserved. It would take a very stubborn fan of rock to not warm up to this great album. Country music is the direct descendant of American folk music (rock is too, but not as directly), and the influence of early folk can even be heard on this album, regardless of the twangy electric guitars and drum kits. I never thought I'd say this, but thanks to this album I'm now a country music fan.
My favorite Emmylou album.......2003-09-13
The set opens with Sister's coming home, an up-tempo song written by Willie Nelson, on which Tanya Tucker joins Emmylou for an incredible duet. I love Willie's music, but Emmylou and Tanya's version of this song is far superior to Willie's original.
Next comes the superb ballad, Beneath still waters, a hitherto obscure George Jones song, which provided Emmylou with a country number one hit. Even better is Save the last dance for me, also a huge country hit for Emmylou. I've heard countless versions of this song including the original Drifters version as well as brilliant covers by Buck Owens and others, but this is the best I've ever heard.
Among the other great covers here are Rough and rocky (Flatt and Scruggs), Hickory wind (a Gram Parsons song that first appeared on the classic album Sweethearts of the rodeo by the Byrds), Sorrow in the wind (Jean Ritchie - the song is sometimes titled Sweet sorrow in the wind), They'll never take his love from me (Hank Williams) and Every time you leave (Louvin Brothers) - with Don Everly.
The title track, Blue Kentucky girl, was an early Loretta Lynn country hit that might have faded into obscurity but for Emmylou's revival of it.
The album closes with one of my favorite country songs, Even cowgirls get the blues. Written by Rodney Crowell and with friends Dolly and Linda joining in, this is brilliant, although more restrained than Lynn Anderson's rousing up-tempo version, which is equally brilliant. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings later recorded the song on their Heroes duet album, and they also did a great job with it.
As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best albums ever recorded by anybody in any genre of music.

Symphonic bluegrass from Burchland is a classy combination.......2004-02-24
Dr. Charles W. Smith, professor emeritus at Western Kentucky University, was commissioned to compose a work. He knew little about bluegrass and virtually nothing of fiddling as compared to playing the violin. Spending more time learning about the instruments and style than writing the work, Dr. Smith then set to work composing the two movements of "Burchland." The first movement, "Friends" spans eight minutes and is based around a love tune written for his granddaughter. The second movement, "Pickin' Party," is about the same time length and was inspired by bluegrass musicians' love for jamming. The orchestral introduction, borrowed from a piece called "Cumberland Gap" which was written in 1996 for saxophone ensemble, evokes a pioneer spirit and feelings of happiness and optimism. The remainder of "Pickin' Party" allows the pickers to do some things, and the orchestra others, in a kind of amusing and competitive "bluegrassical" dialogue. The result is a synergy, something better than either could do alone.
Curtis Burch, born in 1945 in Montgomery, Alabama, is well known in bluegrass circles. He's played with Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson and John Cowan in the New Grass Revival in the 1970s. He's toured with artists like Leon Russell and John Hartford. Burch has recorded on many projects and is featured on Sugar Hill Record's Grammy award-winning "Great Dobro Sessions." More recently, Curtis and Norman Blake recorded "You Are My Sunshine" on the soundtrack of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," and Curtis appears on an innovative band project called "Soulgrass." On "Burchland," he is joined by Ruth Burch (guitar, vocals), Ricky Burch (banjo, vocals), Chris Brandstatt (guitar), Paul McCoy (bass), David Roemer (mandolin), Joel Whittinghill (fiddle), and Sharon Whittinghill (guitar, hammered dulcimer).
The Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra's mission is to "change lives...one note at a time" through music education and exciting concerts featuring a wide variety of music from the classical repertoire to Ragtime, Beatles, Bluegrass and Broadway. They attempt to "wow" their audiences. I was particularly impressed with Julianna Waller's violin, Mark Berry's and Webb Hendrix's percussion, Charles Smith's flute, John Cipolla's clarinet, Janet Bass Smith's piano, and Michael Thurman's horn in the orchestral bluegrass arrangements.
Following the debut of the commissioned and studio-recorded title piece, the remainder of the album includes live cuts of covers from Ruth Franks, Johnny Mullins, Karla Bonoff, Rodney Dillard, Townes Van Zandt and others. Some, primarily the slower numbers, work better than others for the motley mix of musicians and orchestral arrangement. Kudos go to Pam Thurman for most of the orchestration. Although hard to categorize, "Burchland" demonstrates creativity, and a willingness to experiment and take risks. It doesn't fit the standard sideboards of bluegrass, but it instead presents the music in a different light. The album puts a different context to the genre. Because "Burchland" is a hybrid, akin to a cultural exchange project, both bluegrass and orchestral snobs might have a difficult time understanding or appreciating it. That would be unfortunate. In reality, bluegrassers should like hearing their favorite and familiar music in an unusual setting. Classical music fans should like the frolicking, fun-filled, and festive atmosphere of this disc. Symphonic bluegrass from Burchland is a classy combination. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
