At the Ryman [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
While live recordings can be treasured mementos for those who were present at the show, they're often substandard versions of favorite material. The live At the Ryman avoids this by covering the material of artists who've influenced Harris's music, rather than concentrating on her own hits. From Steve Earle and Bill Monroe to the Everly Brothers and Creedence Clearwater Revival, her choices are solid and sometimes unexpected (Bruce Springsteen). Harris's love of the music--and appreciation for the audience--shines through in these performances. The songs may have been done better elsewhere (most notably by the songwriters) and Emmy's delivery is at times uneven (as with any live performance), but the talented, fun-loving, all-acoustic Nash Ramblers do much to compensate. --Alexandra Russell

5 out of 5 stars Awesome...........2007-06-27

I was fortunate enough to catch Emmylou's reprisal of this show at a Ryman concert in the mid-90's. But you don't have to actually be there to sink deep into this magnificent collection of material. Some of the most well chosen songs anyone could think to assemble, from the wry Steve Earle "Guitar Town" to the gospel of "Calling My Children Home." Close your eyes and dream what the show looks like while drinking in one of the most moving voices in music accompanied by some superbly accomplished musicians. Then seek out the companion VHS tape of this and see how close you came.

5 out of 5 stars Emmyloug Harris & The Nash Ramblers At the Ryman.......2007-01-10

The work of the artist and band are exceptional. Lively, versatile, thoroughly enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One Her of Best .......2005-12-04

My CD collection boasts 22 titles by Emmylou Harris, which is not nearly her entire output, but I am slowly working on acquiring the rest of her amazing catalogue. While not every one of her albums is a favorite, she consistently has produced more stunning albums than almost any other artist I can name.

Naming a favorite is tricky. I am partial to her early Warner Brothers / Reprise material, but truth be told, there is only one or two albums in her whole output (so far) that I haven't much cared for (Wrecking Ball and Spyboy being the only two albums that I have been unable to warm to at all). My favorites include Blue Kentucky Girl, Cowgirls Prayer, Elite Hotel, Quarter Moon, Luxury Liner, Roses in the Snow, Light of the Stable and the two Trio albums with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Near misses (meaning I don't absolutely love every single track on the album, but did enjoy much they had to offer) were Brand New Dance, Last Date, Cimarron, Bluebird, Last Date and Red Dirt Girl.

When I do think of my favorites, of course I think of the albums I find myself playing over and over. And for the past few years, the Emmylou Harris album I listen to more than any other is At the Ryman with the Nashville Ramblers.

Like most of her other albums, the quality and musicianship of At the Ryman is remarkably consistent throughout the entire CD. While there is not a weak track on the whole album, the standouts are more than usually exceptional. Mansion on the Hill, I Guess Things Happen That Way, Half As Much and Cattle Call are all wonderful. But the two best tracks to me are Like Strangers, one of the most gorgeous love songs ever written, and the remarkable medley, It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go / Abraham, Martin & John. These two cuts may just be my two favorite ELH tracks ever. At least, they're my current favorites, and have been for a while.

If you are unfamiliar with Emmylou, I caution you to go slowly when deciding what to buy. Her voice is always lovely, but her style tends to shift (the mark of a true genius) between several different genres. While I prefer her country, bluegrass and folk-flavored albums, others may prefer her forays into rock & roll and country /rock. If I had purchased Spyboy or Wrecking Ball as my first ELH album, I may not have purchased a second. And then I would be missing out on some incredible music.

5 out of 5 stars Seamless blend of the old and the new.......2005-04-03

On this magical live album, Emmylou and the Nash Ramblers pay tribute to the very old (Stephen Foster), the new (Steve Earle, John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen) and bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, with covers of three of his songs. Of course, the album is a seamless blend of the old and the new.

The music goes from uptempo country rock like Earle's Guitar Town, to lovely yodelling as on Cattle Call, the Tex Owens song. There is also the lovely lilting country pop of Guess Things Happen That Way, the sensitive treatment of Springsteen's Mansion On The Hill and the thrilling instrumental Scotland, the first of the Monroe numbers.

Emmylou talks a bit more between songs here than on her other brilliant live album, the great Spyboy. The playing is superb throughout, as in the buoyant Montana Cowgirl, the slow and melancholy ballad like Strangers (first recorded by the Everly Brothers), and the propulsive Lodi, the old Creedence hit.

A highlight of At The Ryman is the soul stirring Calling My Children Home, just Emmylou and the male backing vocals. This one reminds me of the biblical expression about Rachel weeping for her children, because they're there no more. Next, there is the most beautiful guitar picking on If I Could Be There, a tender love song.

Walls Of Time and Get Up John are both energetic Monroe compositions, performed with feeling and gusto. The medley of Hard Life and Abraham, Martin and John is done in a more folkie style and her voice really soars here. The album concludes with the rhythmic train song, Smoke Along The Track.

At The Ryman is a triumph of excellent material interpreted with expertise and feeling. The CD booklet contains background notes by Emmylou on this performance plus photographs and information on her and the members of the Nash Ramblers.

5 out of 5 stars Even with the negatives, I give it 5 stars.......2004-03-31

The bluegrass and country/western portions of this live album are so phenomenal, I can forgive the out-of-place tribute to ecology and martyrs of the 60's.

Acoustic interplay generates an electric charge as guest musicians join Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives for a concert that puts the pedal to the metal of bluegrass tradition. The hometown crowd at Nashville's Mother Church of Country Music (the same stage on which a 13-year-old Stuart made his Ryman debut accompanying Lester Flatt on the mandolin) spurs the band to peak intensity. With stellar support from fiddler Stuart Duncan and banjoist Charlie Cushman--and a guest appearance by master Dobroist Josh Graves--Stuart and band explore and extend the dynamics of bluegrass, from familiar fare such as "Orange Blossom Special" and "The Great Speckled Bird" through the harmony-laden balladry of "Homesick" and the honky-tonk heartbreak of "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock," with the latter providing the closing kick to a particularly lively evening. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Solid - but wanted more.......2006-07-29

Marty puts out another solid CD, he's always been one of my favorites. But the CD only has 11 songs, 40-42 minutes. Being a live CD, they could have put another half dozen songs on it.

4 out of 5 stars A sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude.......2006-05-15

Playing Time - 42:42 -- It's been a number of years since I caught Marty Stuart live at a bluegrass festival at the Frontier Ranch near Columbus, Ohio. At the time, I thought his show was a little too country with its electric guitars and drums, but he was still very well received by the large crowd in attendance. This live bluegrass album is a very welcome acoustic treat that takes the consummate entertainer back to his professional bluegrass roots that first began after he heard Bill Monroe & The Sullivan Family at the Natl. Guard Armory in Jackson, Alabama in 1970. By 1972 (at age 13), the Mississippi native was playing mandolin and lead guitar with Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass. Lester affectionately called him "Little Marty Stuart." After seven years with Lester, he spent six with Johnny Cash. Marty's also worked with Bob Dylan, Crystal Gayle, Anne Murray, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Jackson, The Sullivan Family, Travis Tritt and many others.

Since joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1992, you might catch Marty with his own band, with "The Opry Bluegrass Band" (with Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill & Earl Scruggs), or with the old-time "Tennessee Mafia Jug Band." The versatile Stuart has found his niche on Hillbilly Rock Road that traverses both bluegrass and country territory. On this album, his signature "Hillbilly Rock" closes the set that took place on July 24, 2003 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Marty had just finished touring the nation with his "Electric Barnyard Tour," and he'd somewhat forgotten that he'd agreed to doing a bluegrass show at the Ryman. No matter because fiddler Stuart Duncan, banjo-player Charlie Cushman, dobro-player Josh Graves, and emcee Eddie Stubbs were only a few phone calls away and more than willing to join Marty's Fabulous Superlatives with Kenny Vaughan (guitar), Harry Stinson (snare drum), and Brian Glenn (bass). Marty admits to not having the time to rehearse much or get serious about anything so the group agreed to pick and sing "marquee level songs with a built in fun factor." It wasn't planned for the sold-out concert to be recorded, but after the fact Marty felt that it was magical from the first note to the last. Thus, it was decided to share it with us on CD. Maybe that's why "Live at the Ryman" follows so closely after his "Soul's Chapel" and "Badlands" album releases since the summer of 2005.

"Live..." conveys a great deal of bluegrass spirit and drive. Often, the very best `grass is played in jam sessions, and these Nashville cats knew exactly how to light the fire. That's where chutzpah kicks in. Marty was clearly in charge, directing the arrangements, and encouraging his sidekicks. The real treat is in hearing the individual instrumentalists tear up standards and impart their own personalities to the likes of Orange Blossom Special, John Henry, Shuckin' the Corn, Train 45, and The Great Speckled Bird. Some of Stuart's hits such as "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock" are given hard-drivin' bluegrass treatment. Great pickers also know how to impart drive to slower-tempo'ed tune, and mandolin players should really enjoy Marty's licks on "No Hard Times Blues." I was surprised that the liner notes don't credit Marty with any vocals. The notes are remiss in not acknowledging songwriters. A few little things aside, "Live at the Ryman" is a sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude. Marty and his buds keep the bluegrass coming at full throttle. Kudos to Les Banks for a fine job recording this show. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-05-07

Marty is a wonderful musician and artist. To hear such great music produced live without the help of the studio and electronics is fabulous. This is what music should be, especially country music. Let's get back to being real.

1 out of 5 stars LIVE AT THE RYMAN.......2006-02-28

Looking for real bluegrass, then you won't like live at the ryman.Marty is taking bluegrass in the same direction that he has taken his country recordings. It should be titled grass that rocks

5 out of 5 stars The Master At Work.......2006-02-16

Marty's music has always been rock and roll, country, bluegrass, honky-tonk, rockabilly and blues all rolled up in one package. These songs are no different. He is a Master musician, artist and singer. The next best thing to being at the Ryman and seeing him live is this record. This is Marty at his best. He gives it his all and you can hear it in his music. Surrounded by other greats such as Stuart Duncan, Charlie Cushman, Josh Graves, Eddie Stubbs and the Superlatives it doesn't get any better than this record. If you want to hear what country music should sound like, buy this record.

2 out of 5 stars Good band, lame songs, strained vocals .......2006-12-06

I am an ardent, longtime REK fan. I know most of his songs and have seen him live a number of times. I consider him a genuine talent and one of my favorite musicians. Unfortunately, this album failed to meet expectations. While the band is in customarily crisp form here, with Rich Brotherton (guitar)and Marty Muse (pedal steel) consistently showcasing their ample talents, the set suffers from the inclusion of too many medicore songs--Train Trek, Farm Fresh Onions, Furnace Fan--and from Robert Earl's grating over-the-top vocals. It seems like he's trying way too hard, nervously aware that he's playing in one of country music's hallowed halls. His self-indulgent caterwauling and monotonous talk-singing all but ruin even the best songs, most notably Shades of Gray. Also, as alluded to by a previous reviewer, the inclusion of yet another version of The Road Goes On Forever is unnecessary. I know it is his signature song but too much of anything is too much. (The same might be said of Merry Christmas from the Family. He's played that thing to death.) To sum up, Live at the Ryman is a disappointing effort from an artist who could offer much, better. I hope he will.

5 out of 5 stars I CANNOT GET ENOUGH!.......2006-10-21

I am a huge REK fan, but boy, let me tell ya, I can't get enough of "Road Goes On Forever."

I'm so thankful that they released this album because I don't think REK has yet explored the depths of that famous song.

I just hope they hurry up and come out with another album where he plays "Road Goes On Forever" because I don't think he's quite mastered the art of screaming each lyric tonelessly. After all, loud is good because it makes ol' REK seem like a hard-partying frat boy.

Also, the guitar solo in this version doesn't quite hit the fifty-minute mark. Also, he doesn't have quite enough different instruments coming in and out playing the same repetitive themes during the solo segment. I don't think Keen can do this song justice until he's included an ancient four-stringed instrument with an unnpronounceable name that was made by an extinct race of cannibals from an island in the South Pacific during the early Neolithic period.

But hard-core fans like me will have to settle for this rendition. At least until those restraining orders in Bandera County expire and we can go back to squatting below Keen's bathroom window and waiting eagerly to hear his latest fart, which, if put on an album, we will gladly assign 5 stars and lots of capital letters!

1 out of 5 stars A cruel, sad footnote at the end of a once-great career.......2006-10-06

Koch Records can call me, or Robert Earl, or any one of you fans, since I used to be one of you. It's a simple question, really. One that I think I know the answer to, but hey, it's just to kick around and see if there MIGHT be a possible answer than the one I can tell is most likely.

Here goes.

WHY was this album released?

Was it to give us the 457th repackaging (on CD, DVD, or otherwise) of "The Road Goes On Forever"? Was it to embarrass us with an uncalled-for version of "Farm Fresh Onions"? Was it to compete for the award of Worst Album Cover Of All Time? Or was it to finally, definitively slam the final nail in this guy's coffin after years of attempting to slip into a "serious singer-songwriter" costume and shed his once-lively stage show and fun songs?

Robert Earl Keen was one of my favorite performers of all time. I understand he got tired of himself, his "yuk, yuk" persona he once called it, and wanted to be taken more seriously. So the jokes ended, the onstage-banter ceased, and what used to be a good night out was relegated to Memoryland. But this album represents the apex of lameness that is the New Robert Earl. It is finally and cruelly the last slap in the face to his devoted fan base I can stand. Hearing "Corpus Christi Bay" and "Amarillo Highway" (not to mention a horrendous "Merry Christmas" that sounds like it was played with a scowl) makes me sad. The road to respect and riches has been a long one, and I'm happy for him. But anyone who can listen to this dreck for longer than a scan is kidding themselves. A damn shame.

5 out of 5 stars Keen is keen at the Ryman!.......2006-07-22

I have REK in live format on 3 CDs and 2 DVDs and although this one does not have any "story telling" on (like Live Dinner #2), it is the best. I can't wait to get it on DVD when it is released in early October! The song selections - we all could want more - are some of his best and the music (the band rocks) makes you want to take the CD, your pick-up truck and your cooler of beer out to your favorite drinking spot and turn it up to 10 and stay all night (and hitting the replay button) listening and sipping on your cold Shiner Bock! Great renditions of Feelin Good Again, I'm Comin Home, What I Really Mean, and Gringo Honeymoon (I want to do this with my wife) for the lover in you; Shades of Gray, Amarillo Highway and Corpus Christi Bay for your rowdy side; and The Road Goes On Forever over 10 minutes long - first five with lyrics and last five with rockin instrumental by the band - that will be a real treat on DVD. I am guessing that this was done near Christmas given the rendition of Merry Christmas From the Family - but it is a good one. Bottom line is that this is a gem and a real keeper. Buy it TODAY!

1 out of 5 stars UNDER-WHELMING.......2006-07-12

definitely not #2 live dinner. no cool stories, nothing different than listening to the album version with some people yelling in between songs. a couple of cool solos by rich brotherton & marty muse, but other than that, save your money. i am a very long time fan and hate to have to write a poor review.

5 out of 5 stars Mandy Triumphs.......2007-05-13

Mandy Barnett made Patsy cline live again. Her voice has a positively uncanny resemblence to the late legend. Tere Myers as Louise Seger provided a very entertaing and informative narrative, but it was Miss Barnett's soaring vocals which made this a truly memorable event. Why this woman isn't a major country music star is a mystery to me! The only fault I have with this CD is that it makes me sad that it's not available on DVD with video.

This is a wonderful collection/story that honors Patsy Cline. It is entertaining and the recordings are great! You will enjoy this CD tremendously, if you like Patsy Cline.

5 out of 5 stars Homage at its best!.......2002-03-11

I saw Mandy Barnett play Patsy at the Ryman in Nashville and was sure she was lipsyncing. I was truly blown away. She has Patsy down to a "T". Of course anyone who expects the real Patsy will be disappointed because this is just an excellent interpretation of the famous country star. I would recommend this for anyone who saw the play or intends to. It is a wonderful reminder of a real friendship between Loiuse (through her story telling) and one of country musics pioneers.
I also recommend Mandy Barnetts CD's for those who like authentic country. She maintains her own identity without sounding like Patsy.

In these sad days when "Bubble gum" country rules the air-ways the only refuge for traditional Country music lovers is CD's.In Billy McCoy's CD "We Are Forever" you have a fine well balanced collection of traditional country goodies. You can tell this man knows what he is siinging about and he sings them straight from the heart. This collection, mostly self-penned, shows his love for various branches of country music including Cajun and Western Swing. My special favorites being "The Hero The County Laid To Rest," and "Cajun Fiddle Man." A good CD so you just can't go wrong.
