While live recordings can be treasured mementos for those who were present at the show, they're often substandard versions of favorite material. The live At the Ryman avoids this by covering the material of artists who've influenced Harris's music, rather than concentrating on her own hits. From Steve Earle and Bill Monroe to the Everly Brothers and Creedence Clearwater Revival, her choices are solid and sometimes unexpected (Bruce Springsteen). Harris's love of the music--and appreciation for the audience--shines through in these performances. The songs may have been done better elsewhere (most notably by the songwriters) and Emmy's delivery is at times uneven (as with any live performance), but the talented, fun-loving, all-acoustic Nash Ramblers do much to compensate. --Alexandra Russell

Emmyloug Harris & The Nash Ramblers At the Ryman.......2007-01-10
One Her of Best .......2005-12-04
Naming a favorite is tricky. I am partial to her early Warner Brothers / Reprise material, but truth be told, there is only one or two albums in her whole output (so far) that I haven't much cared for (Wrecking Ball and Spyboy being the only two albums that I have been unable to warm to at all). My favorites include Blue Kentucky Girl, Cowgirls Prayer, Elite Hotel, Quarter Moon, Luxury Liner, Roses in the Snow, Light of the Stable and the two Trio albums with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Near misses (meaning I don't absolutely love every single track on the album, but did enjoy much they had to offer) were Brand New Dance, Last Date, Cimarron, Bluebird, Last Date and Red Dirt Girl.
When I do think of my favorites, of course I think of the albums I find myself playing over and over. And for the past few years, the Emmylou Harris album I listen to more than any other is At the Ryman with the Nashville Ramblers.
Like most of her other albums, the quality and musicianship of At the Ryman is remarkably consistent throughout the entire CD. While there is not a weak track on the whole album, the standouts are more than usually exceptional. Mansion on the Hill, I Guess Things Happen That Way, Half As Much and Cattle Call are all wonderful. But the two best tracks to me are Like Strangers, one of the most gorgeous love songs ever written, and the remarkable medley, It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go / Abraham, Martin & John. These two cuts may just be my two favorite ELH tracks ever. At least, they're my current favorites, and have been for a while.
If you are unfamiliar with Emmylou, I caution you to go slowly when deciding what to buy. Her voice is always lovely, but her style tends to shift (the mark of a true genius) between several different genres. While I prefer her country, bluegrass and folk-flavored albums, others may prefer her forays into rock & roll and country /rock. If I had purchased Spyboy or Wrecking Ball as my first ELH album, I may not have purchased a second. And then I would be missing out on some incredible music.
Seamless blend of the old and the new.......2005-04-03
The music goes from uptempo country rock like Earle's Guitar Town, to lovely yodelling as on Cattle Call, the Tex Owens song. There is also the lovely lilting country pop of Guess Things Happen That Way, the sensitive treatment of Springsteen's Mansion On The Hill and the thrilling instrumental Scotland, the first of the Monroe numbers.
Emmylou talks a bit more between songs here than on her other brilliant live album, the great Spyboy. The playing is superb throughout, as in the buoyant Montana Cowgirl, the slow and melancholy ballad like Strangers (first recorded by the Everly Brothers), and the propulsive Lodi, the old Creedence hit.
A highlight of At The Ryman is the soul stirring Calling My Children Home, just Emmylou and the male backing vocals. This one reminds me of the biblical expression about Rachel weeping for her children, because they're there no more. Next, there is the most beautiful guitar picking on If I Could Be There, a tender love song.
Walls Of Time and Get Up John are both energetic Monroe compositions, performed with feeling and gusto. The medley of Hard Life and Abraham, Martin and John is done in a more folkie style and her voice really soars here. The album concludes with the rhythmic train song, Smoke Along The Track.
At The Ryman is a triumph of excellent material interpreted with expertise and feeling. The CD booklet contains background notes by Emmylou on this performance plus photographs and information on her and the members of the Nash Ramblers.
Even with the negatives, I give it 5 stars.......2004-03-31

Acoustic interplay generates an electric charge as guest musicians join Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives for a concert that puts the pedal to the metal of bluegrass tradition. The hometown crowd at Nashville's Mother Church of Country Music (the same stage on which a 13-year-old Stuart made his Ryman debut accompanying Lester Flatt on the mandolin) spurs the band to peak intensity. With stellar support from fiddler Stuart Duncan and banjoist Charlie Cushman--and a guest appearance by master Dobroist Josh Graves--Stuart and band explore and extend the dynamics of bluegrass, from familiar fare such as "Orange Blossom Special" and "The Great Speckled Bird" through the harmony-laden balladry of "Homesick" and the honky-tonk heartbreak of "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock," with the latter providing the closing kick to a particularly lively evening. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
Solid - but wanted more.......2006-07-29
A sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude.......2006-05-15
Since joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1992, you might catch Marty with his own band, with "The Opry Bluegrass Band" (with Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill & Earl Scruggs), or with the old-time "Tennessee Mafia Jug Band." The versatile Stuart has found his niche on Hillbilly Rock Road that traverses both bluegrass and country territory. On this album, his signature "Hillbilly Rock" closes the set that took place on July 24, 2003 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Marty had just finished touring the nation with his "Electric Barnyard Tour," and he'd somewhat forgotten that he'd agreed to doing a bluegrass show at the Ryman. No matter because fiddler Stuart Duncan, banjo-player Charlie Cushman, dobro-player Josh Graves, and emcee Eddie Stubbs were only a few phone calls away and more than willing to join Marty's Fabulous Superlatives with Kenny Vaughan (guitar), Harry Stinson (snare drum), and Brian Glenn (bass). Marty admits to not having the time to rehearse much or get serious about anything so the group agreed to pick and sing "marquee level songs with a built in fun factor." It wasn't planned for the sold-out concert to be recorded, but after the fact Marty felt that it was magical from the first note to the last. Thus, it was decided to share it with us on CD. Maybe that's why "Live at the Ryman" follows so closely after his "Soul's Chapel" and "Badlands" album releases since the summer of 2005.
"Live..." conveys a great deal of bluegrass spirit and drive. Often, the very best `grass is played in jam sessions, and these Nashville cats knew exactly how to light the fire. That's where chutzpah kicks in. Marty was clearly in charge, directing the arrangements, and encouraging his sidekicks. The real treat is in hearing the individual instrumentalists tear up standards and impart their own personalities to the likes of Orange Blossom Special, John Henry, Shuckin' the Corn, Train 45, and The Great Speckled Bird. Some of Stuart's hits such as "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" and "Hillbilly Rock" are given hard-drivin' bluegrass treatment. Great pickers also know how to impart drive to slower-tempo'ed tune, and mandolin players should really enjoy Marty's licks on "No Hard Times Blues." I was surprised that the liner notes don't credit Marty with any vocals. The notes are remiss in not acknowledging songwriters. A few little things aside, "Live at the Ryman" is a sturdy, confident project with raw energy and brash attitude. Marty and his buds keep the bluegrass coming at full throttle. Kudos to Les Banks for a fine job recording this show. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

I CANNOT GET ENOUGH!.......2006-10-21
I'm so thankful that they released this album because I don't think REK has yet explored the depths of that famous song.
I just hope they hurry up and come out with another album where he plays "Road Goes On Forever" because I don't think he's quite mastered the art of screaming each lyric tonelessly. After all, loud is good because it makes ol' REK seem like a hard-partying frat boy.
Also, the guitar solo in this version doesn't quite hit the fifty-minute mark. Also, he doesn't have quite enough different instruments coming in and out playing the same repetitive themes during the solo segment. I don't think Keen can do this song justice until he's included an ancient four-stringed instrument with an unnpronounceable name that was made by an extinct race of cannibals from an island in the South Pacific during the early Neolithic period.
But hard-core fans like me will have to settle for this rendition. At least until those restraining orders in Bandera County expire and we can go back to squatting below Keen's bathroom window and waiting eagerly to hear his latest fart, which, if put on an album, we will gladly assign 5 stars and lots of capital letters!
A cruel, sad footnote at the end of a once-great career.......2006-10-06
Here goes.
WHY was this album released?
Was it to give us the 457th repackaging (on CD, DVD, or otherwise) of "The Road Goes On Forever"? Was it to embarrass us with an uncalled-for version of "Farm Fresh Onions"? Was it to compete for the award of Worst Album Cover Of All Time? Or was it to finally, definitively slam the final nail in this guy's coffin after years of attempting to slip into a "serious singer-songwriter" costume and shed his once-lively stage show and fun songs?
Robert Earl Keen was one of my favorite performers of all time. I understand he got tired of himself, his "yuk, yuk" persona he once called it, and wanted to be taken more seriously. So the jokes ended, the onstage-banter ceased, and what used to be a good night out was relegated to Memoryland. But this album represents the apex of lameness that is the New Robert Earl. It is finally and cruelly the last slap in the face to his devoted fan base I can stand. Hearing "Corpus Christi Bay" and "Amarillo Highway" (not to mention a horrendous "Merry Christmas" that sounds like it was played with a scowl) makes me sad. The road to respect and riches has been a long one, and I'm happy for him. But anyone who can listen to this dreck for longer than a scan is kidding themselves. A damn shame.
Keen is keen at the Ryman!.......2006-07-22
