The Complete Hank Williams [Box set]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Hank Williams rose to prominence at the exact middle of the 20th century, and this fact helps to explain why he remains such a unique figure in country music. Put simply, he is the thread that connects (however loosely) Jimmie Rodgers and Garth Brooks. This 10-CD mother lode brilliantly captures the essence of the man and his spellbinding music. The official studio takes provide the foundation, while the demos, outtakes, and live recordings are the putty in the gaps. --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com essential recording
After so many years of so many haphazard, oft-overdubbed, slapdash Hank Williams reissues, this lavish package seems truly an embarrassment of riches. Imagine being able to dip in and listen to the unadorned music from the whole of this pioneer's musical career, along with preserved historical spoken words. His career truly represents the major turning point in country music's history, and this box set--music and densely packed attendant memorabilia--is as much a social history of America at mid-20th century as it is a music document. Williams's recording career lasted only six years and he died tragically at age 29, but he left a musical and emotional legacy that grows year by year. To sketch the basics of The Complete Hank Williams: There are 10 CDs encompassing 225 cuts from all parts of his career--the demos, the radio shows, the Opry debut triumph. Hank Jr.'s career stands as the most frustrating of all modern honky-tonkers', as much for the way the industry has managed his immense catalogue as for the way he has managed his undeniable gifts as a songwriter and singer. At three CDs, Curb's overview is a far cry from "complete": his best work, especially the tough, bluesy songs of Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, is slighted in favor of a play-the-hits approach, even though Williams's singles haven't always been his best work. Likewise, the collection includes nary a cut from the sadly out-of-print Hank Williams Jr. & Friends, though the liner notes recognize that 1975 album as a landmark. Instead Curb has cobbled material readily available elsewhere on existing hits packages and complete albums. That said, Jr.'s country-fried rock--newcomers may be shocked at how hard he rocks--and his unreconstructed hillbilly ideology can be bracing on "Come On Over to the Country," on the foreboding "A Country Boy Can Survive," and on his best '80s performance, a scorching duet with Johnny Cash on "That Old Wheel" (from Cash's classic Water from the Wells of Home). But instead of focusing on similarly strong tunes, this box includes the tasteless beyond-the-crypt duets with Hank Sr., the silly, unblushing prejudice of "Young Country," and the war-mongering diatribe "Don't Give Us a Reason"--as if the listener needed reminders of just how bad Bocephus can be. What Hank Jr.'s legacy needs is a thorough, critical, and eclectic compilation of his finest performances. This set isn't it. --Roy Kasten

2 out of 5 stars NOT COMPLETE.......2007-03-09

The description "complete" on box sets gets more ridiculous all the time. Only 45 songs from a guy who had 9 of the top 40 albums on the Billboard country chart at the same time?! Those 90 songs would barely be the beginning of a real Complete Hank Jr. Better off getting the bargain price CD reissues of the original albums than a bogus set like this.

5 out of 5 stars claasic country.......2007-01-16

a fine retrospective of hank williams work and in our case a great price.
all our favorites were there and she who must be obeyed was very happy with the cd.

4 out of 5 stars Hank Walliams Jr........2007-01-12

It's a must have CD for any music lover. I like that it has most of his hit songs.

5 out of 5 stars bocephuspalooza.......2006-11-04

If you like Hank Jr. then you get a great compilation here. If you enjoy the "new" bad boy country singers then you should get this set to hear where they all got it from. The original (Hank Williams Jr.) outlaw country singer is still the best!

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2006-10-11

What a great collection of pure honky tonkin' country music. All of his biggest hits are here, as well as a few of the minor (but still excellent) tunes. In the late 1970's and early 1980's I don't think a day went by that I didn't have Hank Jr. on my turntable at home or on my tape deck in the car.
What I would like to add to the other reviews of this very fine collection is the fact that some of Hank's mid-1970's music is always over-looked. Great hard-edged country songs such as The New South, Montgomery In The Rain, and a great drunken version of Uncle Pen. Then there's other fine tunes like The Conversation, Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way, and If You Don't Like Hank Williams. And that's why this collection received a "4" instead of a "5" - it is in no way complete, and should not be called that.
Hank Williams Jr., in my opinion, did not get the true acclaim that he should have. The radio play, at the time most of these releases came out, seemed to be hung on Barbara Mandrell and Lee Greenwood, and others of their ilk, so many of these tunes did not get the hot airplay that they should have. And, as for Country Music Awards, well, it took clear until the mid-80's before he truly began to be recognized for his contributions to Country Music.
So, all n' all this is a very good collection of Hank Williams Jr.'s biggest hits, and you definitely will not be disappointed. He's back to being played quite often in my house, and he sounds just as good as he did twenty plus years ago. Go Hank!
By the way, many of Hank Jr.'s earlier albums/cd's are available at extremely low prices here at Amazon (The New South, Old Habits, Pressure Is On, & Friends). Check them out. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Music For The Ages!.......2007-07-09

No one will ever match the talent Hank Williams had. The only draw back to his music is that he's not around today to see how many lives he touched! Hank is at the Grand Ol' Oprey in Heaven singing with those that have left us and I can't wait to see his live performance some day!

5 out of 5 stars incredible resource.......2007-02-14

I sing, play guitar, write music, and I am currently diving deep into classic country and old-time music from the 1930s-1950s. This is a great collection, well packaged, with good (sometimes very good) liner notes and historical background information. It will be an incredible resource for me for the rest of my life. Don't believe the complainers who moan about the packaging scratching the CDs in this collection --- that has not happened to me once.

5 out of 5 stars Paranoia is not healthy.......2007-02-09

Look let me say first off that the packaging DOES NOT damage the CD's. Careless people do. If you can act like a human when taking the CD's out of the case they will be fine. My Dad ordered this box set for my birthday which was today. I am only 16 years old and Hank Williams speaks to me more than any stupid rapper could. Before this set, I bought the Original Singles Plus collection. Sure it was good, but I wasn't satisfied. It left out all but 1 duet with Audrey Williams and left out every Luke the Drifter tune. I wasn't satisfied. When I got this box set, I found it was the greatest birthday present I ever received. The packaging is absolutely beautiful. It comes with a durable outside case made of reinforced paper board. The CD's themselves come in a book with the CD's seperated by pages. Before each page of CD's there are pages that display all the songs discs. The CD book is full of pictures of Hank, his band, his buddies, and his original LP covers. This box set also includes a whole book dedicated just to stories and pictures of Hank. As for writing it includes everything from his original hand written lyrics to "Cold, Cold Heart," and "I Saw the Light," to quotes about him from some of Country Music's greatest artists to stories of all the different recording sessions. And don't even get me started on the sound quality. I know there are some people who are reading this and thinking "you can hear popping and hissing and some of the recordings WAH WAH WAH. These songs were made over 50 years ago, some of them even 60 years. This is the best sound quality I've ever encountered of Hank. The real prizes are discs 5 - 10. These discs include live performances from Radio and Television that have never been released. It also comes with interviews with Hank from people such as Minnie Pearl. It also includes Hanks very first Grand Ole Opry appearance on June 18, 1949 where he became the only artist in Grand Ole Opry history to get encored 6 straight times with "Lovesick Blues."

All in all, this is the greatest compilation of music I've ever encountered. Please don't let anyone tell you that the packaging scratches the CD's. You will enjoy this box set thoroughly if you enjoy Hank's work as much as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars effort........2006-08-24

I am very proud to have the box set.
Any country fan, regardless new or classic must have this box set. for several reasons:
A. Hank was and still is one of the foundations of influences of the artists that came after his short run (less than 6 years).
B. To enjoy the song writing craft that Hank was gifted with.
C. A clean marketing deal from the record company by releasing the complete Hank recordings. Lucky for us, No greedy marketing scam by releasing the complete set in installments.
D. Heck a lot of Hank's songs have been covered over and over again by stars from the 50's all the way to today. So it is a great chance for you to hear the original recording.

I do agree with some previous reviewers that the packaging is nicely made, as the CDs are inside a book about Hank, with a number of photos. The only downside to the packaging is that it might actually scratch the CDs. but it and Ipod it.

In the end, I truly enjoy listening to the box set, and I certainly do hope you do too.

All the best,
Nawaf

5 out of 5 stars In the Top 5 of the 20th Century's Best.......2006-02-19

When I listen to music, I like to listen to the real thing. And Hank Sr. is the REAL THING.
Let me just say it out right: I love the music of Hank Williams. From his earliest recordings through the last, the demo's through the live stuff, from the radio shows through his spirituals. No one sings 'em like Hank. And to think all this was accomplished in less than 10 years! A true hillbilly singer in every sense of the phrase. In other words, there's no mistaking him for the fake country music of today.
To me this box set represents everything that country music should be, and I thank the folks at Polygram/Mercury for keeping this great music alive. The folks who program modern country radio should listen to this set as a prerequisite before entering into their field. Maybe then we wouldn't have to listen to the majority of the current crop of country pap out there who seem to be more into rock and pop than country music.
I'm not going to squabble about how 'incomplete' this set really is. To add every single recording - including the live stuff and demos - would make this box set so outrageously priced that no one would be able to afford it. It has his complete MGM studio recordings, and that is what I believe the title pertains to.
Hank Williams is truly a musical hero of mine, a true legend of the 20th century.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hank Williams Well Represented Here..........2007-05-07

Although not complete by any means (no compilation ever is) this set of recordings is a good overview of Hank's work. It includes the majority of his popular studio work plus some very good live material. This set is a great way to introduce yourself to his music and will serve as a strong base to start a complete collection. The audio quality is very good and the packaging is well designed, handsome and easily stored, unlike most cumbersome and bland box sets. The Hank Williams Complete Collection is not really complete, but it's a good start.
