The Best of Doug Sahm & The Sir Douglas Quintet 1968-1975

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The British Invasion of the mid-1960s was so pervasive that it didn't take much more than a modified pudding-bowl haircut and appending "Sir" to your name to make a substantial portion of the record-buying public think you were one of those hip, loyal-to-the-crown blokes just then dominating the airwaves. But "Sir Douglas" was actually Texan Doug Sahm, and the Quintet owed less to the Beatles than to Tex-Mex border sounds--the hybrid of rock, country, and conjunto that Sahm seemingly absorbed like a sponge. This collection picks up after their early regional successes (and the shuffling gem "She's About a Mover"), spanning the period from their national breakthrough, "Mendocino" (with its sparkling Farfisa organ fills by Augie Meyers) through the mid-'70s. In between, Sahm and company mirrored the hippie-driven musical eclecticism of the era in his own idiosyncratic way. In fact, the music herein is the roots of Sahm and Meyers's beloved Texas Tornados, as attested by tracks like "Nuevo Laredo," "Let's Go to Mexico," and "Texas Tornado." If joyous musical border-hopping is your pleasure, look no further. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars obscure gem.......2007-01-24

Who is this guy? Back when music was a lot more regional in this country, you could be big in Detroit or Dallas but pretty unknown elsewhere. At least that's how I can explain why no one's heard of Doug Sahm. His songs are like Crazy Horse meets Freddy Fender - raw and loud, but somehow authentic. This is roadhouse music, like what floods out as you crack open the back door of a saloon off the interstate in a sandy Southwestern town. You've probably heard a couple tracks in movies or "classic country" (or whatever) radio over the years (Is Anybody Going to San Antone?, Mendocino). Of course, it's all fanstasy - these guys dress up like the Burrito Bros. in ersatz Nudie suits and ape a bit of "banda" accordion - yet it still rocks. Hard. Take it on the road, and turn it loud.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a Texas legend.......2006-12-30

If you can't dig rock, country, blues, and even some jazz, then don't bother. Doug Sahm covers it all and better than most. He's one of the best Texas ever produced, and everything he does has soul. This is a great introduction, including many great tracks by the SDQ and some solo tracks. If you like it, then by all means, dig in to his back catalog. He's one of the best musicians Texas ever produced - almost every album Doug cut has some bit of magic to it. His music always lifts my spirits and makes me feel good. If there were any justice in the world, then Doug would have had many hits, but you can find this disc and discover his wonderful music for yourself. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Texas Music.......2006-11-02

Excellent CD! The best Texas music ever made. Nueva Laredo is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars a great gift.......2006-08-03

I recently purchased this CD for my father, and he's been listening to it nonstop. He loved the Sir Douglas Quintet back in the 70's, and since several of the members make up this band, only with a Tex-Mex twist, he loves this group as well.

5 out of 5 stars A real treasure.......2003-08-27

Everyone I play this for falls in love with it.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds of the early 60,s.......2006-02-23

I'm delighted I bought this album, particularly for the first track She's about a mover. This was a new sound to a young Dublin guy and it was great! Track 4 is another gem. The whole album has a simple sound that the kids nowadays might scoff at but the memories of the 60's and early "blues" clubs come flooding back when you play this CD. Good value for money- it's already on my ipod!!

5 out of 5 stars Almost paradise!!.......2001-03-23

I bought this CD because it includes some of the tracks of my favorite Doug Sahm recording...DOUG SAHM and BAND. I only wish the song "Its Gonna be Easy" was included in this compilation. Anyways the DOUG SAHM and BAND tunes on this CD offer a rough, unpolished but groooovy sound. Doug and his collaborating musicians offer up a delicious mix of tex-mex, blues and western music. This CD is not for folks wanting a clean polished sound....this is the REAL thang!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Will Have To Do Until The Real Thing Comes Along.......2000-09-27

I bought this CD only because it was the only place to find most of the material from Doug's 1973 Atlantic recording Doug Sahm and The Band. That album featured the likes of David Bromberg, David "Fathead" Newman, Flaco Jiminez, Dr John and the infamous Robert Zimmerman. With a cast of legends such as this, it was nearly impossible to live up to the hype. However, I think that session produced more than it's share of standouts. Faded Love, San Antoine, Dealer's Blues and Dylan's great composition Wallflower are all praiseworthy.

I did find a copy of Doug Sahm and The Band reissued on the Edsel label. So it's out theresomewhere. Until then, look to this Rhino collection to fill in the gaps.

4 out of 5 stars aint given you one red copper cent.......2000-06-22

the blues tunes on this disc are pure doug. your friends, san francisco fm blues, and aint that lovin you are as good as it gets. this is the stuff doug used to lay down at the old soap. i can still see him with hat and fender pushing his glasses higher on his nose, telling jack barber or rocky morales how he wanted something done-without missing a lick. there are other good tunes here. if you are a DOUGIE fan you should pick it up.

4 out of 5 stars There's only 1 Doug.......2000-01-01

My collection of Doug's CD is more almost complete. Although not his best, a little patchy, there are some rediscovered gems. Poison Love is superb, a fantastic wall of sound. Tennessee Blue is great with plenty of other must play again gems. So sad to hear of Doug's passing.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE COLLECTION FOR ANY SIR DOUGLAS FAN.......2001-03-22

It seems you have to buy at least 2 or 3 greatest hits collections of Sir Douglas to get everything you want. Their Greatest Hits 1968-75 was good, but it still omits some essential Sir Douglas songs, including "SHE'S ABOUT A MOVER". But on these Crazy Cajun recordings, just about every song on this cd was left off their other Greatest Hits album. With this you get that big hit "She's About A Mover", "T-Bone Shuffle", which was a staple of all their live shows. Other favorites on here are the always fun "Just a Teeny Bit Of Your Love", "Revolutionary Ways", and my personal favorite, the 8 minute "Funky Side Of Your Mind". This is a fantastic version of this song that's guaranteed to get your toes tapping. The music on here was taken from the many Crazy Cajun sessions Sir Douglas did between 1965-77. There are a couple early songs here that are not quite the sound quality of their later music, but their still not bad. The only song I wish they had included here was "Mendicino". But like I said, you can't get every Sir Douglas song you like on just one cd. But for me, I like this album every bit as much as their other Best Of compilation. I recommend getting them both, because you can never have too much of a good thing like Sir Douglas.
