It's hard to imagine now, when even Shania Twain routinely uses power chords, but the Kentucky Headhunters' first single, a piledriving, quasi-metal transformation of Bill Monroe's "Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine," was a revolutionary record for country in 1990. With its thumping drums, sheet-metal guitar, and a liquid-fuzztone lead guitar more reminiscent of Blue Cheer than bluegrass, the song sounded like nothing else on country radio. This debut album revealed the ultra-scruffy Headhunters to be a surprisingly traditional group, delving into rockabilly, western swing, and a lot of boogie-woogie. Unfortunately, most of their explorations are disposable (if not outright unlistenable; cf. "Rock & Roll Angel"). Still, besides the brilliant, album-opening first hit, there are enjoyable moments. "My Daddy Was a Milkman" is an ominous rocker with a touch of Bo Diddley and intriguing lyrics, and two covers, Don Gibson's standard "Oh Lonesome Me" and Henson Cargill's 1967 fluke social commentary "Skip a Rope," are rocked up excitingly. And "Dumas Walker" is an irresistible loping country boogie that introduced millions to the titular establishment's delectable menu: "slaw burger, fries, and a bottle of Ski" (a Kentucky knockoff of Mountain Dew). The Headhunters were musical pioneers, but inconsistent to a fault. --Ken Barnes

Very good music for the treadmill.......2007-01-09
The debut album of a great band, blending metal, jazz, rock, & country.......2006-09-05
The core of the band has actually been playing together since the late `60s. The new additions to the group, who joined a few years before this album was released in 1989, were the Phelps brothers. Doug Phelps plays bass and sings harmony vocals (and would later become the band's lead vocalist). His harmony vocals are a key part of the Headhunters sound on this album. Ricky Lee Phelps contributes his unique lead vocals and has a country singer's voice with the attitude of a rock and roller. Judging from a comparison of the band's work with and without him, Ricky Lee also contributed a substantial amount to the attitude and musical style heard here. I think it is safe to say that the Phelps brothers added the extra kick that the band needed to make the jump from anonymity to, briefly, country superstars.
The album highlights include the following:
The band's awesome reinterpretation of Bill Monroe's "Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine," and the band's original "Dumas Walker" both feature, with great success, the Phelps' brotherly harmony and multiple guitar solos by Greg Martin.
"My Daddy Was A Milkman" is country-metal with the guitars cranked up to ten. This song highlights one of Headhunter's strange strengths--their ability to deliver campy/novelty material with complete seriousness and sincerity.
One of my favorites off this album is "Some Folks like to Steal" a blues-jazz number featuring some great guitar work from Mr. Martin and an excellent, mischievous vocal by Ricky Lee Phelps.
I'd like to give this album five stars due to the uniqueness of the approach and the excellence of the execution. However, there a few lesser tracks sandwiched between the quality material that make the album a less-than consistent listen. Yet even these songs feature the Headhunters' stellar musicianship, and only "Rock `N' Roll Angel" is truly bad.
Not before or since has there been a band quite like the Headhunters. If you like Southern rock and country, mixed with blues, you need to check the Headhunters out. Before you buy any other album by the Kentucky Headhunters, I would recommend getting this one.

Trying to Find Themselves.......2005-11-14
The opening track, "Walk Softly on this Heart of Mine," is one of the best on the CD. This wailing song is improved by its rock reinterpretation. I can say this because I liked Bill Monroe's version first. The song "Dumas Walker" has throwaway lyrics, but they are easy to remember and have a line dance beat that just begs to be played down at the local honky-tonk; slap your knees, stomp your feet and have a beer!
Then the music moves onto some less memorable music. "Rag Top" has a nice beat, but the lyrics are awful, a country equivalent of bubblegum music. Each time I hear this song I want to cringe or skip over it. This song is probably fine for the Saturday night crowd after nine PM. On the other hand, the Saturday night crowd might be throwing the band out after this one. Things get no better with "Rock `n' Roll Angel." The less said about that song the better.
I probably should like "Smooth" no more than I liked the previous couple of songs, but I do like this song. I think it's probably because this song has more of a classic country song with the rock and pop elements lower key than the previous couple of songs. The lyrics are relatively simple and easy to remember, so this song would be a good one for a variety of occasions. Another song that affects a classic style, with a solid rock backbeat, is "High Steppin' Daddy." Once again, this song is so basic and so clearly derivative that I probably should dislike it, but how can you dislike music this fun?
On the other hand, I do not care for the Kentucky Headhunters' cover of "Skip a Rope" at all. The original was introspective and dramatic. This version is sped up and loses all the charm of the original. This song is a slow country sung on uppers, and the Headhunters bring nothing to the table on this song.
Once again the Headhunters redeem themselves on "Some Folks like to Steal." This blues song has a number of wonderful elements and real style. The Kentucky Headhunters would be better served to sing music like this.
While I was severely unimpressed with the cover of "Skip a Rope," I enjoyed the cover of "Oh Lonesome Me" a lot. This song keeps within the feeling of the original, and yet with enough of a new interpretation that the song is interesting. Of course, the original already had rock and roll elements and the Headhunters have just taken that style a bit further, but still close enough to the original for this version to be exciting.
This CD closes with a rocker, "Daddy Was a Milkman." One of the jokes that went around frequently many years ago was that this person's daddy or that person's daddy was the milkman. The Kentucky Headhunters have taken this concept to a musical conception. This song is probably the fastest and most rock-infused of any song on this CD. However, it is also one of the better songs as well. Many country fans will probably not like this song because it has too much rock in it, but fans of country-rock may find this song intriguing.
The Kentucky Headhunters is not likely to make to any of my favorites lists. However, there are some interesting tracks, and some interesting interpretations. My impression is that this is a group that is still trying to find itself. There are suggestions in this music as to where this group should go, but in the meantime they are all over the map in style and consistency, and those characteristics make this CD difficult to recommend and difficult to enjoy without qualifications. This CD is absolutely one that you should try before you buy.

They are all fun .......2007-02-04
I have been listening to rock and roll for 25 years
I work in an office, do the "cube life", sitting at a PC for most of the day, working on my own, popping out to get liquids or drain liquids, chat some, that's the life. Now this ipod deal comes along a few years ago. Only, if your going to listen to music all day, you just cant listen to real pure rock and roll all day, you just cant. I don't care if your homeless sitting in a park all day with an ipod on, you just cant listen to real hard rock and roll for hours and hours at time all day everyday.
Classical puts me to sleep. I can handle some of it in the morning, ease into the day, but not allot of it. Pop I don't care for. Country singing about my dog had an affair on my wife doesn't cut either, what did I just say? Anyway, and Rap is out. Opera, No. So what to do?
Well thanks to my Dad, who used to watch Hee Haw all the time when I was growing up, and man did I hate it that show! Even today I seen some of it not long ago, its corny country stuff, but when Roy Clark comes on and solos for a song, then man always caught my attention. He was flat out good. But still I would "never" and have never owned a bluegrass cd. Get real!
But then, a friend, listening to me talk of my search to get some kind of music going for the day, loaned me a String Cheese Incident CD, an On The Road 3 cd set, and said just try it for awhile. Let it grow on you. What do you have to lose? Well yep I ended up submitting to it, and then really liking it. Before long I was walking around the office humming along, co workers going what you got playing man?? So having remembered seeing these Pickin' on cd's before, I said well why not try it, so I started off with one, right away started laughing and laughing good not at it. Now mind you no way would this happen up till a few years ago. Getting older? I don't know, many people are born and raised on this stuff. Its all in how you approach it. And I will tell ya what, that was a couple years ago and 6 pickin' on cd's later, I am so much more relaxed at work now. What I didn't notice before was music and singing along with it ALL day works on you more than you realize. Just having some "cruising tunes" playing with no singing really is relaxing. I don't have this playing all day, but its taking up a couple hours a day. Some more String Cheese cd's. And I will sooner or later just end up getting everyone of these pickin' on cd's. You see its not all about "oh this one doesn't jam enough" or the other one is better than this one. Nah. If you like Rock, and don't want to listen to it all day, then get used to these trust me, I did and its worth it. I still laugh at dif times playing them. And now some coworkers and friends have them loaded up also. I still have all the "real" bands loaded into my ipod, never giving up on Classic Rock and Roll, ever!
Lastly, I am not someone who sells these CD's. I actually am very picky if you read my reviews, and look at my Amazon name! and flunk so much stuff that's out there. Believe me this has caught me off guard. Just thought I would let anyone know that is searching for a new way listen to the day to try it out a bit. Give it time. Don't just listen partly or once then blow it all off, scoff and go Sacrilege! For I did before, but now a convert, and after a couple years of it, I get it, and will be enjoying these for years to come, just like the real rock and roll at times. I have posted this review of the cd's I have so far.
Good luck. Have a great day ya all.
Oh no, I am talking hillbilly already!
