Having earned respect for creating mainstream country that proudly maintains a deep vein of traditional elements, Vince Gill draws from a broader palette on this unusually lengthy offering of originals and collaborations. Honoring styles that inspired him, he zigzags from rockabilly (the opening title track) to the Beatle-esque ballad "Someday" (cowritten with Richard Marx) into unfettered traditionalism on the shuffle "Without You," the majestic "Two Hearts," and the Merle Haggard tribute "Real Mean Bottle." His philosophical "Young Man's Town" could easily be a commentary on today's Nashville. While he could have dropped a couple of the more-mundane numbers (especially the clichéd cantina ditty "We Had It All"), he projects the same clean consistency that's marked all his work. True, he takes few risks, but then the cutting edge was never his chosen place. And as the album's sole producer, he shows better sense than most current Nashville producers. Gill, the omnipresent guest harmony singer on so many others' records, used surprisingly few guests himself, which keeps the focus where it belongs. --Rich Kienzle

BOY, HE GOT THAT RIGHT!.......2004-02-14
Gill's smooth-as-silk voice and dynamite talents on the guitar shine on my favorite tracks for this one including Next Big Thing, Don't Let Her Get Away, Whippoorwill River, From Where I Stand, and This Old Guitar And Me. But, hey, there's not a bad song on this one.

Absolutely Gill's Best Ever.......2003-12-02
The musicianship of both Gill and his backup band on this CD is tight, crystal clear and superb. The bass particularly does not overwhelm and keeps the music driving smoothly. The lyrics are more meaningful than some of the songs in his past efforts. "You Ain't Foolin' Nobody" has a haunting bluegrass twang that made me wish for Patty Loveless or Mindy Smith singing harmony on this song. It is a CD that keeps you moving as Vince rocks and weep when he puts you into the emotional space of heartache with the passion in his voice. And he does it so effortlessly. I love this CD.

POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Live JB !.......2000-05-24
I was also nicely surprised by the release and live quality of this CD. As a compulsive JB buyer, it was an Amazon "instabuy". It is great to see these boys release soemthing again after all this time, and it does not disappoint either. My favorites like Roadrunner and Big Foot Motel are in a styling groove.
Having said that, I find it a little depressing and irritating that the JB's extensive early works are not available any more. THis is a great album, but frankly, I don't think it has the energy and quirkyness of "Live In Hamburg" and I don't want to live in the past, but I remeber being totally enamoured with "Sex & Travel" and "The Gift Of Music". It is criminal that that work is no longer published.
Anyone out there hear that ? Anyone ?
Glorious and Worthy.......2000-03-30
The jaw-dropping bids on eBay give some indication of the Jazz Butcher's proverbial cult following: a digital copy of 1982's A Scandal in Bohemia, something of a post-punk masterpiece ignored by the critics, recently sold for almost $200, and many of the out-of-print CDs earn triple-digit offers. Copyright hassles with the now defunct Glass Records, keepers of the Butcher's early catalog, have prevented re-releases of the most sought-after disks, while a 1996 compilation with many of the best old cuts is already out-of-print. Thus, ROIR's new Glorious and Idiotic, recorded live in Hamburg during the Butcher's recent tour (a reunion circuit with original guitarist Max Eider that had the Internet cultists buzzing), is less a standard concert disk than a way around the copyright trouble and a chance for fans to access some great rare material. The thirteen songs, most of them old Butcher mainstays, are crisp and intimate - a big improvement from the live Western Family CD released in 1993 - from the loungy chords of "Partytime" and "Just Like Betty Page," to the clean pop of "Rain" (and, why the hell not, the ubiquitous cover of the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner"). There's little new ground, but that's hardly the point, and fans will appreciate a chance to hear some vintage Jazz Butcher without giving their rent money to eBay. Newcomers, meanwhile, can sample the best of an obscure British artist whose talent, if not luck and timing, has been as formidable as any in the history of alternative rock.

DAOZ has invented a sick new mix of hip-hop dance party music with a hardcore edge. "The Next Big Thing" proves that DAOZ is a dominate force in the music industry with tracks decorated with smashing guitar and sick street beats but DAOZ can still hold down a ballad. A must have for any real Dog.
