Having earned respect for creating mainstream country that proudly maintains a deep vein of traditional elements, Vince Gill draws from a broader palette on this unusually lengthy offering of originals and collaborations. Honoring styles that inspired him, he zigzags from rockabilly (the opening title track) to the Beatle-esque ballad "Someday" (cowritten with Richard Marx) into unfettered traditionalism on the shuffle "Without You," the majestic "Two Hearts," and the Merle Haggard tribute "Real Mean Bottle." His philosophical "Young Man's Town" could easily be a commentary on today's Nashville. While he could have dropped a couple of the more-mundane numbers (especially the clichéd cantina ditty "We Had It All"), he projects the same clean consistency that's marked all his work. True, he takes few risks, but then the cutting edge was never his chosen place. And as the album's sole producer, he shows better sense than most current Nashville producers. Gill, the omnipresent guest harmony singer on so many others' records, used surprisingly few guests himself, which keeps the focus where it belongs. --Rich Kienzle

4 out of 5 stars Some songs are stellar and others are okay.......2004-04-29

That pretty much sums up The Next Big Thing. I think Vince could use an assistant producer in addition to himself because not all of his songs are 5 star like before when Tony Brown used to produce him. Vince Gill isn't a bad producer, but it is hard to remain objective when you are your own producer. This day in age, Pam Tillis has been the only country star to successfully produce her own music with brilliant results. I really like Whipporwill River, the title track and a Young Man's Town the best. I think 17 tracks is too much because I can think of some songs that could have either been trimmed off or be modified. But, I think that Vince has written some of the best songs of his career because they show newfound insight and maturity. As a young artist, I look up to that.

5 out of 5 stars BOY, HE GOT THAT RIGHT!.......2004-02-14

Vince Gill's title is perfect. This album is the NEXT BIG THING in a career that has been the consummate chart topper.

Gill's smooth-as-silk voice and dynamite talents on the guitar shine on my favorite tracks for this one including Next Big Thing, Don't Let Her Get Away, Whippoorwill River, From Where I Stand, and This Old Guitar And Me. But, hey, there's not a bad song on this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Next BIG Thing!!.......2004-01-24

I switched to country music over 10 years ago because of Vince Gill and he sounds better than ever today!! This CD is terrific from start to finish - especially the pleasant surprise of ex-Doobie Michael McDonald's backup in "These Broken Hearts"!! Keep it coming, Vince, cause we'll always be ready for your next bigger thing!!

4 out of 5 stars STELLAR UPDATE.......2003-12-17

I will say something great about one song in this batch of new Gill recordings..."YOUNG MAN'S TOWN" has to be the ultimate 'followup' or sequel to the Eagles' "New Kid In Town" and it sounds like a lost gem that was misplaced from the "HOTEL CALIFORNIA" recording sessions, yet, Vince maintains his own identity throughout this great song. If you play "New Kid In Town" and "Young Man's Town" back to back, the music and lyrics from the two songs create a haunting atmosphere that places you somehwere between early 1977 and the present...scenes and visions of the past and present reeling before your eyes to the music. It's a great feeling. Though I do wonder and try to imagine the Eagles singing this new song, nobody but Vince Gill could perform this song so perfectly..."Hotel California" revisited, without the great Eagles.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gill's Best Ever.......2003-12-02

This collection of songs are fun, heartbreaking and so beautiful that the entire CD takes your breath away. Vince's voice is in perfect form and his rendition of "These Broken Hearts" with the incredible Michael Mc Donald singing harmony is exquisite. My next favorite is "Whippoorwill River" where his elastic vocal style is all over the place and every note is once again perfect. "She Never Makes Me Cry" words tell the story of a deep and painful goodbye to a former wife. His duet with Lee Ann Womack on "Two Hearts" is the best female contribution I think. "Old Time Fiddle" is a fun and delightful song that gets you out of the chair and movin'.

The musicianship of both Gill and his backup band on this CD is tight, crystal clear and superb. The bass particularly does not overwhelm and keeps the music driving smoothly. The lyrics are more meaningful than some of the songs in his past efforts. "You Ain't Foolin' Nobody" has a haunting bluegrass twang that made me wish for Patty Loveless or Mindy Smith singing harmony on this song. It is a CD that keeps you moving as Vince rocks and weep when he puts you into the emotional space of heartache with the passion in his voice. And he does it so effortlessly. I love this CD.

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant.......2007-07-04

Glorious and Idiotic share many of the early and brilliant Jazz Butcher songs also on the Bloody Nonsense compilation, now long out of print. The great guitar, and fantastically insightful lyrics make this a must-have for any lover of clever britpop. Let me say again, 'Must-have'.

    4 out of 5 stars Kenny's Ghost.......2003-10-29

JBC has never yet made a five-star LP, and they probably never will, but that's no reason not to keep hoping. This live effort starts so well that its only challenge is to keep on building from the opening third...and it can't quite manage it. Who cares? It's great anyway. Best of all, it's acoustic, the JBC unglued and unplugged. The guitar work, especially on the quieter numbers, suggests the jazz work of Kenny Burrell.

4 out of 5 stars Live JB !.......2000-05-24

I was also nicely surprised by the release and live quality of this CD. As a compulsive JB buyer, it was an Amazon "instabuy". It is great to see these boys release soemthing again after all this time, and it does not disappoint either. My favorites like Roadrunner and Big Foot Motel are in a styling groove.

Having said that, I find it a little depressing and irritating that the JB's extensive early works are not available any more. THis is a great album, but frankly, I don't think it has the energy and quirkyness of "Live In Hamburg" and I don't want to live in the past, but I remeber being totally enamoured with "Sex & Travel" and "The Gift Of Music". It is criminal that that work is no longer published.

Anyone out there hear that ? Anyone ?

4 out of 5 stars Glorious and Worthy.......2000-03-30

THE JAZZ BUTCHER CONSPIRACY Glorious and Idiotic (ROIR)

The jaw-dropping bids on eBay give some indication of the Jazz Butcher's proverbial cult following: a digital copy of 1982's A Scandal in Bohemia, something of a post-punk masterpiece ignored by the critics, recently sold for almost $200, and many of the out-of-print CDs earn triple-digit offers. Copyright hassles with the now defunct Glass Records, keepers of the Butcher's early catalog, have prevented re-releases of the most sought-after disks, while a 1996 compilation with many of the best old cuts is already out-of-print. Thus, ROIR's new Glorious and Idiotic, recorded live in Hamburg during the Butcher's recent tour (a reunion circuit with original guitarist Max Eider that had the Internet cultists buzzing), is less a standard concert disk than a way around the copyright trouble and a chance for fans to access some great rare material. The thirteen songs, most of them old Butcher mainstays, are crisp and intimate - a big improvement from the live Western Family CD released in 1993 - from the loungy chords of "Partytime" and "Just Like Betty Page," to the clean pop of "Rain" (and, why the hell not, the ubiquitous cover of the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner"). There's little new ground, but that's hardly the point, and fans will appreciate a chance to hear some vintage Jazz Butcher without giving their rent money to eBay. Newcomers, meanwhile, can sample the best of an obscure British artist whose talent, if not luck and timing, has been as formidable as any in the history of alternative rock.

4 out of 5 stars Same versions as on Draining the Glass?.......2000-03-22

Are these the same versions of Partytime, Drink, The Human Jungle, & Caroline Wheeler's Birthday Present as on "Draining the Glass"?

DAOZ has invented a sick new mix of hip-hop dance party music with a hardcore edge. "The Next Big Thing" proves that DAOZ is a dominate force in the music industry with tracks decorated with smashing guitar and sick street beats but DAOZ can still hold down a ballad. A must have for any real Dog.
