There are two ways of combating the blazing misogyny of gangsta rap: with water or with fire. Journalists, teachers, and ministers have been trying to douse the flames of sexism with intellectual and moral arguments. The reasoning is persuasive, but it's doubtful it reaches rap's hard-core young audience. For that crowd, you have to fight fire with fire, and that's just what the female rap trio Salt 'N' Pepa have done so successfully with Very Necessary. With their explicit rapping about bedroom gymnastics, Salt 'N' Pepa are unlikely to be held up as role models in classrooms or churches anytime soon. For a sexually active teenage girl, however, the trio shows how you can get your pleasure without putting up with any disrespect. Salt 'N' Pepa's hit singles "Whatta Man" and "Shoop" are both sensual appreciations of the men they like, but the album also contains some hilarious, pitiless putdowns of the men who don't treat them right. --Geoffrey Himes

It's Salt and Pepa. Soooo good! The only thing I wish was on this CD was 'Push It' but this CD will not disappoint you if you choose to buy it

5 out of 5 stars Salt N Pepa.......2006-02-23

I enjoyed recieving this CD. I had it before, but it was stolen by some near-do-wells who couldn't buy there own. Anyway, it is an excellent CD for you old school-ers by a group of ladies that knew how to rap. You won't find this type of sophisticated rapping anymore (at least not in my age bracket).

5 out of 5 stars great hip hop.......2005-08-06

salt n pepa knew how to make some of the most memorable hip hop hooks of all time

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Album Ever!.......2004-10-15

Salt 'N Pepa's "Very Necessary" is one of the few albums where you never think of skipping a track. Every song is not good, not great, but EXCELLENT. They were, of course, the first and best women in hip-hop music (not to mention the cutest). Although only three of the songs on Very Necessary made it to the Billboard Top 40, they're all on the list of my 100 favorite songs of all time. If you were a kid in the '90s, you'll certainly love Salt 'N Pepa's 1993 album Very Necessary.

After Scott La Rock's death, KRS-One (a.k.a. Kris Parker) carried on the BDP name with this mammoth album and its uneasy balance between violence and nonviolence, jazz beats and hard-core hip-hop, the pride of boasting and the pride of the teacher he was trying to become. It leads off with KRS's declaration of "My Philosophy"--as philosophy, it was a little inconsistent, but at least it was something, and "Stop the Violence" cuts deep both as philosophy and as a superheavy reggae groove. Kris is funny, too--"Jimmy" introduced a deathless euphemism to the language--but he's mostly concerned here with demonstrating his supremacy ("I'm Still #1"), memorializing his partner, and charting his own growth from a maverick to a leader. --Douglas Wolk

    5 out of 5 stars Classic 2nd album from Hip-Hop's Teacher!.......2007-06-04

    By All Means Necessary
"Fresh! For 1988, you suckers!" was the signature line from "My Philosophy", the first single off Boogie Down Productions' masterpiece second LP, By All Means Necessary. In the interim between their debut on 1987's Criminal Minded and the summer release of By All Means, founding member DJ Scott La Rock was tragically murdered. Frontman KRS-One soldiered on, bringing junior member D-Nice and KRS's brother Kenny Parker into the mix as turntable operators.

Produced by the artist and engineered by Ivan "Doc" Rodriguez, KRS-One maintains the momentum of Criminal Minded with streetwise battle raps, but he incorporates more narratives about ghetto lifestyles and the dangers of street violence. The lyrics to "I'm Still #1" are loosely based on a rhyme contest between KRS and rap legend Melle Mel at NYC's Latin Quarters. "Illegal Business" dismisses the easy targets of the "War on Drugs" policy, making the point that the illegal drug trade is not divorced from the American economy. "Jimmy" makes a case for safe sex, and could be considered a sequel to "Super-hoe". The reggae shuffle of "Stop the Violence" of course features the unforgettable hook, "1, 2, 3, the crew is called BDP, and if you want to go to the tip-top, stop the violence in hip-hop, why-oh!"

The most surprisingly enjoyable song is "Ya Slippin'": "So assume you're doomed when you step in the room; I'll be the witch and you'll be the broom.." taunts KRS, as he rhymes over Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" guitar riff combined with his own, slowed-down "Poetry" rhythm track. "Necessary" is a sonically-sparse nod to spoken word poetry at the end of the LP, a first for rap albums. This album could be re-released with remixes (such as an alternate take of "I'm Still #1"), and perhaps even a drum-&-bass remix of "Necessary" that surfaced in the late 90's.

5 out of 5 stars by all means liston to this cd!!.......2006-11-04

this record along with several others at the time advanced hip-hop to another level. if anyone who is a lyricist wishes to learn how to construct rhymes and make it listenable to the audience, grab the teacher!

4 out of 5 stars BDP IN FULL EFFECT.......2006-10-12

Yo Im a old schooler to the heart and this album you should have in your old school rap collection. "My Philosophy" is the one jam I remember playing on the radio back in Chicago 1988 and it blew my mind. The beat and the lyrics and the way KRS-ONE flows on this track is unbelievable. "Stop the Violence" was another that would get major air time, but my personal favorite was Illegal Business.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Blastmaster KRS1 - "So you're a philosopher?".......2006-09-22

Another Banger from one of the greatest years in hiphop "1988". Kris drops science like no other on this one. This still bangs today almost 20 years later. I can't wait till Kris says "Fresh for 2008!" You SUCKAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars "My Philosophy".......2006-08-31

This track alone is worth 5 stars. The rest of the album is ok. But believe me when you LISTEN to the track, and how it applies to todays "illusion" of hip-hop its amazing how this 20yr old track is still kicking knowledge before you were in diapers. A must have for all hip-hop enthusiast.

    5 out of 5 stars DAVE'S RAVE!.......2006-02-14

DAVE EDMUNDS-REPEAT WHEN NECESSARY: Welsh revivalist rocker Dave Edmunds' finest hour rings in on this companion album to partner-in-rhyme Nick Lowe's equally vital LABOUR OF LUST (both were recorded simultaneously, utilizing their goodtime band Rockpile). The rockabilly rebel with the twangy geetar and a voice to match spews forth nothing but charisma, craftsmanship, and class, whether tackling (the definitive version of) Elvis Costello's ultra-clever GIRLS TALK, fellow angry young man Graham Parker's slam-banger CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE, or country bootkicker QUEEN OF HEARTS (stolen, nearly note for note by Juice Newton). But that's only the "hits", folks and fans; monster mash CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, bluesy shuffle BAD IS BAD (Huey Lewis and the WHO?...), and the Wall of Sound melody TAKE ME FOR A LITTLE WHILE are considerably more of a good thing. Edmunds, as well known for his production values (he's twiddled the knobs for everyone from the Fabulous Thunderbirds to the Everly Brothers) as his "where have I heard this great stuff before" musical ability, is a rock 'n roll flame keeper of the highest order, as this slab o' sound makes perfectly obvious. Repeat when necessary: crank this sucker up!...crank this sucker up!...RATING: FIVE FRETS

5 out of 5 stars Still His Best.......2003-08-08

This was the first Dave Edmunds album I ever bought (way back in the days of vinyl), and it's still arguably his very best. As other reviewers note, this record rocks from start to finish. Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk" (soon to be a big hit for Linda Ronstadt) kicks off the disc in style and helped give Edmunds a foot in the "New Wave" camp in the late '70s..."Crawling From The Wreckage" became one of his signature tunes--he often opened his legendary live shows with this song. "Queen Of Hearts" became a big hit for Juice Newton and was written by Hank DeVito, who was working with people like Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris back then..."Sweet Little Lisa" and "Dynamite" are straight-on rockers, and "Bad Is Bad" is kind of a rockin' blues tune. Simply a great album from start to finish.

Edmunds and/or Rockpile appeared to be on the verge of hitting the big time at this point, but it just didn't happen. Ironically, Edmunds produced the first couple of albums by the Stray Cats shortly thereafter, and watched them achieve huge success instead. Dave also produced artists as varied as k.d. lang, Carlene Carter and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He is a non-American with a greater feel and taste for American roots music than most of us will ever have. Virtually all of his catalog is excellent, but this is the place to start. ESSENTIAL.

5 out of 5 stars REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT!.......2001-02-23

This album smokes. Edmunds was at the peak of his powers, and his back up band (see; Rockpile) was the best he's ever had. Dave comes out swingin with the excellent `Girls Talk' and doesn't slow down til it's all over. Raucous, lively and punchy, this is pub at it's best. Good rockin rockabilly in the fifties tradition. Fans of Cowboy Mouth, CCR and Men At Work should take note. Rockpile was the king of all bar bands, unstoppably great, and no matter what name they recorded under they were irresistible (see Lowe's LABOR OF LUST and their own SECONDS OF PLEASUSE). It's a pity they didn't stay together (Billy Bremner, where are you?). Pay special attention to "Crawling From The Wreckage', `Sweet Little Lisa' and `Creature From The Black Lagoon'

PS And by the way, Huey Lewis plays harmonica on `Bad Is Bad', which he covered on SPORTS.

5 out of 5 stars Edmunds and Rockpile hit the mark.......2000-06-01

Recorded with Rockpile (Billy Bremner, 2nd guitar; Nick Lowe, bass; Terry Williams, drums), this is easily Edmunds best album. These guys flat rock. Too bad that Edmunds didn't share the vocals with Lowe and Bremner. Rockpile never realized their potential as a true group. Their sole album was good, but not as good as either this album or Nick Lowe's Labour of Lust (also recorded with Rockpile).

    Ah, more unfulfilled potential

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......1999-02-11

Look no further, this is the definitive Dave Edmunds recording. From the opening bars of "Girls Talk" to the closing chorus of "Bad is Bad", Repeat When Necessary consistently hits the mark.

5 out of 5 stars Another one of hiphop's elite.......2006-07-28

If The Lady of Rage was promoted right this album might have did a little better than it did. I have a lot of respect for Lady of Rage for staying true to the hiphop culture when the game was populated with rap hookers and clones of rap hookers. Standout tracks: wickedness (original and remix), sho shot, microphone pon cok, rough, rugged and raw, big bad lady, some s--- and the rest of this album. Filler:none. The only flaw of this album is that sometimes her metaphors get repetitive but that doesnt make this album less of a classic. Rage deserves props for not stooping to the mindless raunchiness that made trina and khia famous. This is definetely a hiphop classic worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Timing Was Everything.......2006-07-27

This classic CD by the Lady of Rage was highly anticipated due to her guest raps with various artists on Death Row Records.

She truly paid her dues to get to the point of releasing her own music, but the label had started its financial free-fall and Necessary Roughness didn't get the backing it needed to receive the industry attention it deserved.

That the raps hold up nearly 10 years after being released says everything one needs to know about Rage. The music came straight from Rage's heart.

    5 out of 5 stars Rage.......2006-07-03

She was on snoop's doggystle allstars volume 1. She was on snoop dogg's album paid da cost to be da boss. She was on welcome to the chuuch the album. She's supposed to release a new cd soon. This was an awesome cd. Rage is better then most rappers. Male or female

5 out of 5 stars What happened to her music career?.......2004-08-23

Robin Yvette Allen (Or The Lady Of Rage) has been in the Music business since Dr. Dre released "The Chronic" in 1992. This was her only album. She was one of my favorite female rappers. Where is she now? These days, I only see her on repeats of "The Steve Harvey Show" as Coretta (Thankfully, she is in the best of DVD). What happened to her music career? Did she just quit? She really needs to do another album. Rage, Please drop another album or as Snoop Dogg would say "Rage, would you please drop some Gangsta S***!"

    4 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2003-06-25

Lady of Rage is a great rapper. She can flow and freestyle as well or better than many more well know male and female artists. As mentioned in the other reviews, she was a victim of bad timing. Death Row was in its death throes and as a result this album wasn't marketed well at all. Also, the production was a little lacking a times. If Rage had come out with an album 1 and a half to 2 years earlier, she would have been far more successful. I dont know what she is doing now, but she deserves a proper chance.

4 out of 5 stars A Fairy Tale of an Album.......2004-02-19

Sara Hickman is one of many female artists that scored record deals during a craze when all sorts of "women in rock" were getting signed. Once Tracy Chapman and Natalie Merchant gave proof to the industry that dance divas weren't the only women that could hit number one, the labels went on a feeding frenzy. A few were actually successful (think The Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge), many got critically noticed (remember Tinita Tickeram?) but a lot of the ones that got critical acclaim also didn't sell huge numbers.

Such is the case with Sara Hickman, who's two albums to appear on Elektra were given strong reviews, some modest airplay ("I Couldn't Help Myself" and "Blue Eyes Are Sensitive to the Light") but only so-so commercial success. As she prepared to turn in her third album to the Elektra label, they decided they would exercise their option to pass on the tapes, and dropped Sara from their artists roster. When Sara put in a request to issue the music on her own, she was told that she could, but only if she bought her own mastertapes back.

Basically heartbroken, Sara retreated to Texas. It was her mom who made the kind of brilliant suggestion that only a mother could make, in the form of asking Sara is she could hold a bake sale or some similar fund raiser. Of course, on its face, the suggestion sounds ludicrous, but Sara got to thinking about it. If her fan base (and we are a loyal lot) would be willing to purchase a listing on the CD itself, perhaps THAT would be enough to rescue the album from gathering dust in a vault somewhere.

And even as far fetched as that idea seemed, somehow, it worked. Not only did Sara manage to raise the necessary funds, she managed to negotiate the price down. The money she raised was used to obtain the tapes, and also to start a childrens' fund that Sara maintains to this day. Once the tapes were hers to release, the fledgling company Discovery Records agreed to release "Necessary Angels." (Now for the irony: Discovery, as is Elektra, was a Time/Warner company. So in essence, Warners paid for the album twice. For the current decade's version, see Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.")

After all that, how does "Necessary Angels" hold up after over a decade? Quite well. "Pursuit Of Happiness" and "The Best of Times" contain the kind of message that never loses its integrity. "Tiger in a Teacup Town" is the kind of humorous song that Sara excels in, especially live. And there are the kinds of touching folk songs that make you love the serenity of a simple acoustic guitar ("Joy" and "Sister and Sam").

It's enough to make you believe in the occasional miracle in the world that "Necessary Angels" saw the light of day. Maybe you haven't heard of Sara Hickman before (if you're reading this, I kinda doubt it), but she's too good to keep under wraps.

5 out of 5 stars Can you wear out a CD??.......2003-08-02

I've worn out many records and cassettes in my day, but this will likely be the first CD I wear out. From the uplifting Best of Times through the fun of Tiger in a Teacup Town and Where the Garage Used to Stand, this one has played over and over. A Room of One's Own should have been a classic of all time. This is the only CD I've ever given to a friend where the person later took me aside and thanked me for turning him on to the artist...and his daughter loves it too ... I had to buy her one! Thanks Sara!

This is a wonderful album. From 1-12 the tracks are at once charming and full of angst.

5 out of 5 stars An Angel of an Album.......2002-04-14

I already owned the first two Sara Hickman albums when I found this CD in a cut-out bin. At first, I felt it paled in comparision to her first two albums, "Equal Scary People," and, "Shortstop." However, after repeated listenings, this has become my favorite Sara Hickman album. Full of personal, heartfelt observations of the world around her, the strength of "Necessary Angels" is Sara's songwriting. Unlike her previous album, "Shortstop," which leaned more toward acoustic pop, this album is driven primarily by acoustic folk, most notably the impressionistic "Shadowboxing," the emotional examination of "Time Will Tell," a wonderful piece about the circle of life as represented by women in her family titled "Sister and Sam," and "Joy," a beautiful observations on the life of a homeless woman. Sara's everpresent optimism and nostalgia can be found in the bouncing, rollicking memory of girlhood, "The Place Where the Garage Used to Stand," and the uptempo "Tiger in a Teacup Town." I consider this CD a treasure, in part because it is becoming more difficult to find, and again because this album was almost not released. Sara's record company refused to release the tapes, and she had to raise money from "necessary angels" to buy back the master tapes. Money well spent, any way you look at it.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless advice wrapped in timeless sound........2001-10-19

I know this is an 80's album. Yet the style and delivery has been a mainstay for many years prior. As pop and rock styles floated in and out. Sara's type of music supported theaters and concerts. It is something that you can relate to today as well. It is possible that others found different tracks profound, yet I think that the first track (Pursuit of Happiness) is something to think about. Pieces of her songs get a little busy especially those that use electronics. But for the most part it sounds like the girl next door. This album definitely belongs in your collection and occasionally in your car.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CD's of all time........2003-04-06

D & D are some unusually talented brothas, and they really shine on this collection of urban inspirational tracks. Yes, "Necessary Measures" was released in 1994, but it still sounds just as fresh as the day it was released (the expression "Word Up" aside, but we'll excuse even that since the song itself is so good). Not only does it still sound current in most every way...it gets better with each listen.

Jet Penix and Fred Hammond lend their fantastic production skills to this project -- but it's the Dawkins brothers who steal the show with their songwriting and vocal abilities. Never overdone or underdone, they allow the Lord to use them to deliver The Message with lyrics that are never preachy; but it will still uplift everyone who listens to it, whether they attend church or not.

I said in the title of this review that this is one of my favorite CD's of all time, and I meant it: it really is that good. I own a LOT of music, both spiritual and mainstream -- and have listened to even more than what I own -- but "Necessary Measures" will always have a permanent spot in my personal Top Ten. And while it may not be that "deep" for you, I guarantee you that you will still enjoy this CD immensely!

Dawkins and Dawkins, where are you? We're ready for your next project (it's been 5 years since "Focus"). Come on, fellas!

4 out of 5 stars "Lets Spill Some Blood".......2007-06-01

Daniel Graves, of Aesthetic Perfection, has created quite an intriguing listening experience for fans of the electronic/industrial music genre with his debut album Blood Spills Not Far from the Wound. While the melodies are relatively simple, they are rather infectious. One simply can't help but move to the beats and get sucked into a trance by Graves' hypnotic vocals and dark lyrics. In contrast to so many of the aggressive vocals of several industrial bands today, Graves sings in an almost spoken-word, subdued, matter-of-fact tone that is reminiscent of several bands from the 80's. Graves keeps things from getting monotonous, however, by mixing it up with synth lines and vox that deliver an aggressive electronic feel without being overdone.

The introduction pulls the listener in with haunting piano blended with synth strings. Following this is the thumping "Spilling Blood," which is screaming to become an instant dance-floor classic. "Dying in the Worst Way" tones it down a bit, but still manages to be addictive, melodic, and memorable. "For All the Lost" is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt out of place, which also seems to be a running theme throughout the course of the album.

This is not to say, however, that the album is without flaws. Some songs are just a tad too repetitive for my liking, and some of the melancholic lyrics could use a bit of improvement, hence the four stars instead of five. Nonetheless, I anxiously await a second album from Graves and Necessary Response. Very highly recommended for fans of Skinny Puppy, VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, and Assemblage 23.
