Like many musicians profoundly moved by the events of September 11, Dolly Parton reacted to the tragedy by going inward and forging a spiritual journey through songwriting. As usual, the subjects from which she draws the greatest strength are the ones that have buoyed her throughout her career--the Deity, to whom she talks directly in the searching "Hello, God," and the mythology of the mountains, best exemplified in "These Old Bones," a fascinating piece of backwoods lore, even as Parton's impersonation of an ancient fortune teller turns grating. Yet the songs on Halos & Horns carry a subtext, too, that of the perpetual struggle between right and wrong, temptation and redemption, and heaven and hell. Longtime Parton fans will recognize that thematic tug from her earliest work, just as they will hear a return to her more primitive, pre-'80s sound. While the singer, who produced the record herself using both Nashville and East Tennessee musicians, reprises several tunes ("Shattered Image," "What a Heartache") from her catalog to give them an acoustic, bluegrassy treatment, she is not without her surprises. Chief among them: "Raven Dove," a powerful, almost biblical prophesy of a Second Coming, and a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," which Parton slightly rewrote to give it more personal and apocalyptic verve. If the thought of that brings a smile to your face, just wait: one spin through it, and you'll be down on your knees. --Alanna Nash

Hello God.......2007-05-29
Yeah why not.......2007-05-05
The biggest news here isn't that Parton does fine by "Stairway To Heaven" (she does) but, rather, it's not the knockout song of the album. "These Old Bones" has all the rhythm momentum, balladry profundity and sonic gimmicks of the Zep themselves and would've been right at home on III.
Also cool is "Not For Me" where Parton eases a bit on the grandstanding and shows off a fine, clear storytelling voice emotionally engaged with her simple, yet elemental, material. "I'm Gone" is a riff or two short of classic, but, with gutbucket good lyrics it's another memorable vocal. Total country.
Lovely.
(That tremolo electric guitar on "If" wasn't such a hot idea, though.)
Best cd.......2005-11-11
HALOS AND HORNS.......2005-09-09
#2 SUGAR HILL- Now this song is fun with banjos and harmonicas
with funny lines like "Down in the mill pond swimming naked showing more than we should have showed" Then Halfway Through The Song Things Elevate And Has A Choir In The Background Wich Sounds Beautiful Then At The End The Song Speeds Up Pretty Fast Then Ends "Up On Sugar Hill" 5/5
#3 NOT FOR ME-This Is As Slow As It Gets although The Sound Clips Make It Sound Kind Of Boring but if you listen to the whole song it would probly change your mind about this song.
It is very beautiful and calm, it might not be your favorite but I LIKE IT 5/5
#4 HELLO GOD- This is the song that did the best on the charts, It Was not a Hit but it made it up to #60 on the country charts
Dolly Also made a music video for it from the CMA Awards in 2002.
Anyways The Song Starts Out Kind Of Quiet in The First Part Then Comes The Choir and More music. So If You Like Dollys More Recent CD FOR GOD AND COUNTRY You Would Like This One Like I Do 5/5
#5 IF -I Dont Have Much To Say About This Song, Dolly Could Have Exchanged this song for another one but its good I like the mandolin and banjo solos the most 3.6/5
#6 SHATTERD IMAGE- This Song Originaly appered on dollys ALL I CAN DO album back in 1970 or something and the updated version sounds better than ever with a new verse (The Old Version Had 3 Verse's and this one has 4 Verse's)4.3/5
#7 THESE OLD BONES- This song is very uniqe some people will like it some wont but when I listend to the song for then first time I was very suprised the other voice on here that dose not really sound like dolly. the sound clips only tell half the story
because dolly plays an old mountain woman on the chours and on a few verses. And Dolly's real voice on the rest of the verses, and on the final chorus dolly sings with her normal voice and her old mountain woman voice together, I guess you can say she dose a duet with herself. The Song is about 6 mins long and the lyrics in the booklet take up 2 pages. one her most creative songs 4.9/5
#8 WHAT A HEARTACHE- This is the third time dolly has recorded this song. It was on her rinstone album (soundtrack from the movie) Currently Unavalible, Then the next version on EAGLE WHEN SHE FLIES Album (Still Avalible in the ocasional music store)Is The Best Version, Now Its on HALOS AND HORNS and I think Dolly puts too much emotion in it And The Backgroung music sounds not very profeshional. 2.8/5
#9 IM GONE- Dolly is going to leave you with a whole bunch of stuff and you'll have alot of explaining to do (You Will Understand What I Mean If You Hear The Whole Song).
Dolly Has Made A Music Video For This Song and although it did not make it on to the charts the music video is quite funny it feartures dolly being attacked by an alien and UFO's.
If You Think The Song Sounds boring in the sound clip you will be happy to know that the song gets better as it goes on. 5/5
#10 RAVEN DOVE-Dolly Parton said that she wrote this song at about 2:00 am in the morning, Strange Huh?.This song is another song about peace and love However Her Voice sounds strained around the end of the song but if you take that out you have a beautiful song 3.7/5
#11 DAGGER THROUGH THE HEART-This Song Is Full Bluegrass No Choirs, No Drums, And No Electric Instraments. I think dollys voice is best on this song Same with the background singers.
This was the first single on the album and the first music video on the album 5/5
#12 IF ONLY-I Think this is the most sad song on the album but so beautiful and great at the same time. 5/5
#13 JOHN DANEIL-A GREAT SONG 5/5
#14 STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN- I Think This is the best cover of someone elses song in years I love it! The Sound Clips make it sound very slow and not exciting, DONT BE FOOLED LIKE I WAS!!!
Because the part you were listening to was the very begining of the song. Later on the song picks up a bit when dolly sings "OH! MAKES ME WONDER" Then comes the really nice harmonies then the drums come in and it sounds more uplifting. Dont forget the banjo solos then the song speeds up and the choir comes in and it sounds perfect! But then the magic ends when the song ends
"And She's Buying A Stairway to Heaven"
5/5 ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall this is a great album, its just a notch behind little sparrow and the grass is blue. And All Of The Songs Were Writen By Dolly Exept For Stairway To Heaven And If. At april 2003 Halos And Horns has sold over 230,000 copies not far from Little sparrow wich sold 270,000 copies so far. The Grass Is Blue Sold about 210,000 Copies or more.
If you choose or not choose to by this Great Album I Also Recommend LITTLE SPARROW (Avalible) THE GRASS IS BLUE (Avalible) and HUNGARY AGAIN (Used CD's may be Avalible) These Four CD's Are Dollys Best Work Yet!!!
Dolly Also Has 2 More Albums Out. One Is FOR GOD AND COUNTRY wich features Country and some bluegrass music. And the other CD is LIVE AND WELL
Songs Rated/Sugar hill tastes yummy!!!.......2005-07-06

Just Think Happy Thoughts.......2005-11-30
I think you need to wait a few years then actually listen to the lyrics. The song is about suicide- you need to hear more than the "think happy thoughts" part.
This song is really amazing. I love how the upbeat, classic-rock-esque music contrasts with the lyrics. This song is about committing suicide, and the lyrics are dr. seus-like.
"Well let's go back to the middle of the day that starts it all,
and I can't begin to let you know just what I'm feeling.
And now the red ones make me fly,
And the blue ones help me fall,
And I think I'll blow my brains against the ceiling.
And as the fragments of my skull begin to fall,
Fall on your tongue like pixie dust
Just think Happy thoughts!
And we'll fly home..."
Listen for yourself. It's a great song.

Album Description
With hints of fitness music and video game sountracks, "Halos & Lassos" tromps through nineteen songs like a mostly sunny afternoon in Berkeley, CA, home of band leader John Ringhofer. With the modal purity of Moondog, symphonic elements of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", and the ancient art of punning, the album boasts pop melodies arranged around the ambidextrous Omnichord - a vintage 80's kidney-shaped electronic autoharp/drum machine/synthesizer. Biblical allusions, sophisticated theology, and lyrical displays of affection are measured by Ringhofer's indelible sense of humor.Customer Reviews:
Lassoing us in.......2006-03-29
It's worked in his previous three albums, and it works in the most part in "Halos and Lassos." It's a bit more confrontational than his previous works, but still has those short songs, wacky Christian lyrics, and cheery music that makes you tap your feet every now and then.
It opens with a cash register ringing and rattling, before Ringhofer starts off with "I'm still your dad, my son/I'm still your mom, my daughter/But a fire guards the garden/and it led the way back home..." Yup, the Biblical references are firmly in place, and they continue through the cheery pop melodies that follow.
Ringhofer verges on pushiness at the beginning of the album, which includes some lines like, "The unbelievers seem to have it easy," but only until he admits his own doubts and worries. It's a fine line between bravery and pushiness, but Ringhofer manages to stay on the brave side.
Then it's off into a long string of pretty little pop melodies: the rippling prettiness of "A Suit of Clouds to Ride the Skies," thoughtful acoustic pop, and some bouncy piano-pop. Ringhofer even seems to be flirting with rock'n'roll in "You Wouldn't Embarrass Me, Would You?" but he yanks himself back to psychpop after a few seconds.
I'll admit it: I don't like Christian music, unless we're talking about medieval hymns. Actually, I don't like most religious music at all. But there's something so upbeat and endearing about Ringhofer's music -- Half-Handed Cloud sounds like the religious cousin of the Flaming Lips.
The vocals don't hurt that impression; Ringhofer has that Wayne Coyne/Jeff Mangum voice, which is off-key in a pleasant way. And his cheery way of singing works well for the songs he writes. They're occasionally a little syrupy, but they're also wonky in their descriptions of styrofoam peanuts, cowboys, royalty, sheep, dead people, prophets, cars, and bad weather (lots of clouds!).
The main instrument here is the Omnichord, a sort of synthesizer/drum machine that does a pretty good job setting up many of these pop tunes. There's some acoustic guitar in some of the songs, but the rippling sound effects and bubbling noises are more prominent.
The main flaw is that the album could have used fewer bells and whistles. Okay, it could have used more bells and whistles, not to mention the horns, because those are delightful, and the album is at its best when Ringhofer throws in tambourines and bells. Just use a bit less Omnichord in the middle of those songs.
Half-Handed Cloud sticks to what it does best in "Halos and Lassos," and fans of the previous three albums won't be disappointed.

Best Blue Dogs CD YET.......2004-06-12

Southern roots rock with country edgings.......2004-04-06
The roots rock foundation - think Mellencamp (whose one-time producer Don Gehman helped shape this) and Springsteen with the Southern edge of Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Outlaws. Vocalist Bobby Houck has the sort of raspy power that fits mid-tempo ballads like "Janie and Me" to a tee, and the band's guitar-bass-drums backings are nicely augmented with tight harmonies and mandolin flourishes. It's the sound of a solid rock band taking on some of the country sounds of Nashville - an ever more successful direction than the typical Nashville country band's crossover into pop and rock.
This album should just as easily please the No Depression crowd as it does MOR radio stations that play Hootie & The Blowfish or John Mellencamp. Perhaps it's too upbeat for the former, and too twangy for the latter, which would be a shame, because it's incredibly tuneful, it rocks, and it has a down home heart and soul. For anyone unfamiliar with the band, this is sure to be one of 2004's unexpected surprises.
Excellent........2004-03-19
My prediction is that this record will be picked up by a major label very soon. There's not a bad song on the entire CD. As a matter of fact, every song on here is outstanding. If you're a fan of rock, country, folk, etc, you won't be disappointed with this effot. It far surpasses even my greatest expectation. Buy it and sit back and enjoy it!
Their Best Effort Yet!.......2004-03-16
listened to it right away.
I have always loved this Charleston,SC based band, but I was absolutely blown away by this album. Having heard
most of the songs live, I knew I was going to love the
cd, but was stunned to discover that it surpassed even
my preconceived notion of it. Halos and Good Buys is
simply phenomenal.
The Blue Dogs have never sounded better. Their
playing is the tightest it has ever been. Both Bobby Houck
and Hank Futch's lead vocals are their best yet, and Don
Gehman's production takes them to a new level of
professionalism that clearly surpasses that of their
previous studios albums. Usually, I can listen to a
new cd and immediately pick out a favorite track or
two, but I have not been able to do so after listening to
it twice. Every song on Halos and Good Buys is
strong.
This should be the album that finally nets the Blue Dogs a long overdue contract with a major label. I believe that after listening to Halos and Good Buys, the talent scouts at the major recording studios will no longer be able to ignore this band.

Ever hear Johnny Thunders, Stiv Bators, Iggy Pop--the trash/thrash glam-punk New York City CBGBs street scene of the late '70s? Guitars slung low, arms flailing 'round the stage with wanton abandon, vocals snarled and spat out with complete disdain... rock & roll as she was originally written in the Guns N' Roses book of How to Have a Good Time? Leopard skin, leather, and long hair... Do you yearn for the days when everyone wore black and people got beaten up in the street for their musical allegiances? Do you still miss Dogs D'Amour? Vancouver, B.C.'s Black Halos (formerly the Black Market Babies) do, and they're not ashamed to let people know it, either. Their debut album is full of songs with titles like "Fucked from the Start," "No Road of Dreams," and the call-to-arms "Retro World"--songs aiming to restart the rock revolution now! --Everett TrueCustomer Reviews:

Years ago when Johnny died I was given that terrible news by Mike Watt in a small city in Canada where Firehose was playing that night. Everybody was down. It has been years since a band sounded this raw, this real, but I hope Stiv, Johnny, and even Mike Watt feel a sense of vindication after hearing this album. Johnny would cock his head back, Stiv would chortle, and Jerry Nolan would deliver that final smack of approval.

The Best Indie Rock Band You've Never Heard.......2005-03-29
This record was actually cut in 1998, if I recall correctly. John Richards of Loveless Records wisely didn't tamper with the original recording and released it as-is. It's mainly acoustic and folky, recalling both a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel and the Mountain Goats without copying either one.
There is a ton of Los Halos music available: check out loshalos.com.
Untouchable.......2004-01-06
You need this.......2003-07-24
The music is mostly sparse and ranges from simplistic ('The Fisherman's King,' 'Losst Halo') to nearly psychedelic and shoe gazer-ish ('Morning of the Sun,' 'Dagger Bones,' 'Will You go to Heaven), but the lyrics carry so much weight and complement the music so well that you won't notice, or care. Lyrical themes of love and loss rue the day, but instead of simplistic bleating the listener is graced with rich imagery and creativity.
'Fisherman's King' was my favorite track to begin with, then it was 'My Heart as an Arrow' before it moved on to 'Gold is the Color' and 'Dagger Bones.' That's what I love about this album: no only is it constantly efficacious but every listen reveals something new to be discovered and devoured. Every song is a classic, there is simply not one track that one would ever need to be skipped over. I'm as fickle and ADD riddled when it comes to music as most of the eMpTyV generation, so it says something for an artist to create a work that is consistently brilliant and makes one want to listen endlessly. That is exactly what Los Halos has done.
Though guitar, some bass and sparse drumming are the specials of the day, Los Halos stretch out an embellish with great effect. 'Losst Halo' has a wailing accordian (I think) and haunting xylophone (is that what it is?) that come into play midway through the song; 'Morning of the Sun' uses a slinky bass line that tangles with a droning organ that gives the song an air of classic mid-60s acidified rock. 'My Heart as an Arrow' brings back the organ but it lends the proceedings an air of a funeral, which is appropriate for the lyrical tone. A banjo comes into play on the hidden track, the most beautifully languid 8 minutes this side of a nap in a hammock.
In short this is probably my new favorite album. I think about it when I'm not listening to it, and it's pure ecstacy when it's playing. No matter what your musical preferance you WILL enjoy this album. I highly and unconditionally recommend "For Ramona" and once you give a listen, you will too.
