Flyer

Nanci Griffith has worn her success well. Along with Lyle Lovett, she has sold the most records of any Texas singer/songwriter, and she has done so on her own terms. Flyer is a jaunty, sometimes driving collection of original songs exploring the politics of the heart and featuring a number of effective guest artists, most notably members of the Counting Crows, Dire Straits, and even R.E.M. But Flyer remains central to her growing body of work for the songs, some of Griffith's most poetic and concise, moving at once beyond a purely Texas folk style and into folk-rock, and yet staying true to her narrative gifts. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Her best... My favorite.......2006-05-25

I'll start by saying that I have been listening to Nanci Griffith for my entire life.*(15 years)* That's because she is one of my mother's favorite artists, so I'm quite familier with her work. But out of of all her albums, Flyer is totally my favorite. I think that it's somewhat diffrent from her other albums, with more flow, and less, as I call it, twang. You know, that country sound. I like that.

It's hard to name my favorite song. Most likely Southbound Train, or Goodnight to Mother's Dream.

Southbound Train, to me, is everything lonely and sad whenever I hear it. The kind of sound that makes my heart twist around in this weird way, just listening to that piano and her voice.

I'm sitting on a southbound train
    Staring at the sky
    I'm thinking of my childhood
And I'm trying not to cry
While a stranger sleeps against me
And it feels like I'm his wife
    Towns and cities flutter past
Like the pages of my life

And I love Goodnight to Mother's Dream, even though I'm not sure why. In a way, it just connects with me, the lyrics and music. And the chorus is beautiful.

And the sailors on the water
...They all want the captain's daughter
They want her beauty and her youth
To grace their bow out on the sea
Me, I'm getting older and I'm plain
    As plain can be
Got a bank full of mother's dreams
    Maybe mother just didn't see
That love would be the only thing
    Her daughter would ever need

The rest of the album is just as perfect. "Always will," "Talk to Me While I'm Listening", "Fragile", And "On Grafton Street" are particularly amazing. Each of her songs are are like individual storys, and they all connect to me in a way that I can't really describe. Let's just say they touch you, and can stay with you long after you hear them. All of her music has always been deep and beautiful, but this album truly shines. In my opinion it's the best of her work, and most defenently my favorite.

I would like to say more, do a page on every song, maybe, but I won't. But I'll say this: Rock on, Nanci.

    5 out of 5 stars Can't live without it.......2005-08-15

I actually bought this CD again to replace the first one that I lost in a move. I went a few months without this CD and found myself missing it, like an old friend. This is classic Nancy at her best. Well written, well produced, well done. "Flyer" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and I listen to it frequently.

5 out of 5 stars This great vocalist's best album!.......2005-04-23

I discovered Nanci Griffith whilst tuning into BBC Radio 2 one morning, on came this song called TIME OF INCONVENIENCE which is on this CD - great lyrics, great guitar riffing, great harmonies, then I went out and got hold of the CD. I've since got hold of many more and recently took my wife to see her live in Bristol on April 13th, truly a fine show! I am now hooked. Nanci is an inspirational person and has one of the finest and most unique voices in music you will hear. This LP begins with FLYER, a tale like many of her songs of lost loves and brief encounters during travels, which strikes a chord and themes the album - another good example is SOUTHBOUND TRAIN, a truly moving ballad with a piano accompaniment that brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. More uptempo, rather rockier numbers include the aforementioned TIME OF INCONVENIENCE and ANYTHING YOU NEED BUT ME - I will say they remind me of REM purely because Peter Buck guests on guitar on this CD. You also have Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton from U2 and Marc Knopfler of DIRE STRAITS on DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME, one of the stand out tracks - so basically this will appeal to a wider audience than folk purists. You also get THE CHIEFTANS accompanying Nanci in ON GRAFTON STREET, inspired by her travels to Dublin - and the last track, THIS HEART you could be forgiven for thinking it is a Buddy Holly cover with its rockabilly riffing - Crickets member Sonny Curtis guests here on guitar as well! So all in all this is an album that no Nanci fan should be without. If you're new to her music, this is a great place to begin, then I would recommend BLUE ROSES FROM THE MOONS, LONE STAR STATE OF MIND and also her OTHER VOICES cover version albums which show the versatilty of her fine vocal talent as good starting points. Then as I am, get hold of the rest!

    5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2004-11-25

It's unfathomable that people think (as one reviewer mentions) that this is a lesser work by Griffith. For me this is the zenith of her career. I doubt she can ever top it.

If you haven't heard Griffith sing you may be startled at her mousy voice. On this album she empties herself of thoughts & hurts, in a related series of songs that never grow repetitive. I have worn out my cd and put it away so many times. 6 months will pass and I'll pull it out and happily rediscover it again. The music just washes over you.

I love the songs: Flyer, On Grafton Street, there's too many to name... but I offer special praise for "Fragile." Fragile is the song I put on when I want to retire to a beautiful America which has nothing to do with the hateful nationalism of neo-conservatives. The aural flow of the background singers, after Nanci's lyric finishes is a wordless tribute to the American experiment.

My only quibble: I think that Southbound Train and Time of Inconvenience try too hard to be deep.

We saw her Valentines Day show at the Vic Theater in Chicago when she toured for this. It was a total love fest for her. A wonderful memory.

I'll sign off with a poigant lyric from Always Will. "Now love has been my passer-by / Stood to still to catch your eye / but there out on the avenue / In your fathers tie I'll remember you."

This is a great, moving, classic album in any category. Best Wishes, Nanci.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-06-15

"On Grafton Street" and title track are pure gold.
There is no such thing as a bad Nanci Griffith album. Like one reviewer said, "These songs melt my heart." I couldn't agree more.

Have the albums. It was great to get on CD. Excellent quality. Pure Praire League spin off group.

5 out of 5 stars Great vocals on this one!!!!!.......2006-09-01

If you appreciate Craig Fuller (Little Feast,Pure Prarie League)and Steve Katz (BS&T) vocals and harmonies--then this cd of its only 2 albums is a definite must. I have both albums on LP which are rare and hard to fine--when they came out on CD I did not hestiate to buy this one. The songs are mostly love songs up tempo and slow with incrediable lyrics. Too bad the albums did not get the airplay they deserved. The vocals are excellent--blended well together--I think people would love to hear this 2 cd set on a frequent basis--it puts your mind at ease znd makes you think of the love you have had in your life. Very emotional. You should also check out the recent release of Pure Prairie League's new album with Craig Fuller back as lead singer--excellent and also check out the 3 albums he made with Little Feat between 1989 and 1994 before they got the girl lead singer. Little Feat is not the same without Craig Fuller. Also check out the first 4 BS & T albums with Steve Katz as lead singer on a few cuts--simply amazing--the man can sing and write!!! Don't miss this album!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A supergroup that never was..........2005-07-17

I give this cd four stars: five stars for the first album (American Flyer reaching #87 on BB album charts in 1976) and three for the follow up album (Spirit of a Woman reaching #171 in 1977). This interesting combination of musicians deserved so much more than a rather obscure note in music history. The first album is the real gem in my opinion: a nice collection of soft rock, not unlike Bread, CSN and America. Beautiful harmonies with beautiful string arrangements by George Martin work the best with these guys like my favourite songs 'Light of your love' 'Such a beautiful feeling' 'Let me down easy' (their only hit reaching #80 in 1976). To tell you the truth the second album hasn't got any songs that really stick because these songs are less pop and more country. In fact I only let the cd play the first 12 songs, but these songs are definitely worth your money!

3 out of 5 stars What Might Have Been..........2004-12-12

There's no arguing the superb (and diverse) mix of talent in this band, but the execution is something less than inspiring, particularly on the second album, Spirit of a Woman. Both albums are easy to listen to and display excellent writing, playing, and singing. Just the same, there's a shortage of real fire behind it, and I find my attention wandering well before it's over. If I would point out a particular flaw, I'd say the somewhat overblown arrangements may have been the wrong ingredient for an otherwise perfect recipe. Some songs, in my opinion, could have been stripped of their glossy orchestration to reveal much more personal and satisfying portraits. Too much layering suggests a lack of confidence in their material. To the contrary, they're great songs swimming in superfluous production.

5 out of 5 stars American Flyer - undiscovered gem.......2004-09-23

I agree 100% with the above comments. American Flyer's music was superb ! If you like them you may also adore music by the group AMERICA.

    Album Description

The greatest dance music producers are influenced by the rhythms of many cultures. Frequent Flyer focuses on those locales around the world that have had a profound influence on dance music. Frequent Flyer: Barcelona is the latest CD in the series and the second of four new "Destinations." For this edition, we touch down in the capital of Catalonia, the heart and soul of Spain's cultural renaissance and a city that leads the way in architecture, food, fashion and of course music. Taking inspiration from the many varied forms of Flamenco the music on Frequent Flyer: Barcelona is a subtle mix of laid-back electronic beats and shimmering acoustic guitars. The music mix is perfect for languid afternoons spent sipping sangria with friends, so sit back and relax...

2 out of 5 stars Not Spanish Music.......2007-06-27

I'm a fan of music from around the world. Sometimes I want to listen to Irish, sometimes Indian/Bollywood, sometimes Spanish. This is not Spanish. Granted, most of the singing is Spanish, but there is no doubt that most of the songs sound like they're from... Bollywood?

Yup, most of the songs are extremely Indian in flavor. I did not get this CD set with the hopes of hearing Spanish sung to Indian beats and with Indian inflections/vocal modulation. But that's what this is. A friend of mine who is a native Spanish speaker even attested some of the vocals, while Spanish, were actually tinged with an Indian accent. Couldn't this collection have had music actually from Spain?

If you have hopes for something guitar flavored or merely Spanish in the most stereotypical of senses, steer far from this. The Argentinian and Red Eye Frequent Flyer collections are not bad, however, and true to their titles.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good!.......2007-05-13

I have been a fan of the Frequent Flyer series, having purchased Kingston, Rio De Janeiro and Buenos Aires before. This one once again highlights an exotic city and selects tunes made in, or inspired by the loungy, electronica scene in Barcelona. The first disc is lighter in mood and sound while the second one is deeper and more intense. If you would like to hear a new twist on Flamenco, then pick this up!

The Death of Frequent Flyer, Southside Chicago native Psalm One's second full-length, shows off the rapper's full talents. Born Christalle Bowen, Psalm One has been recording and performing since '98, both solo and as a member of the acclaimed Nacrobats. Frequent Flyer is righteous but not too preachy; her delivery's smooth while the jams are already screwed, slowed down. She can sing almost as well as she rhymes, which is always a plus. Unsurprisingly, she's more than once been called a cross between Lauryn Hill and Devin the Dude. Her work is addictive and incredibly smart, so it comes as no surprise that Psalm One is a former chemist. Frequent Flyer is easily one of the most engagingly laid-back hip-hop records of 2006. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars What Every Female MC Should Aspire To..............2007-01-10

What more can you say about this former chemist turned rapper other than the fact that she can hold her own in a male dominated genre. Death Of Frequent Flyer is exactly what hip hop needed. This LP is filled with a brilliant flow, great beats and quite possibly the best underground label in the genre today. My personal favorite and standout song on the album would have to be Rapper Girls with Psalm One indirectly taking shots at female MC's like Lil Kim, Trina, Shawnna as well as others who use sex instead of raw lyrical talent to sell albums laced over a smoothed out beat...my second favorite would have to be Macaroni and Cheese....the beat on this is just pure gorgeous with a bluesy feel to it over a thumping bass. There were several MC's and producers contributing to this stellar album including Brother Ali(Standby), Thaione Davis(Death Of Frequent Flyer). Psalm One uses her own hometown producer Overflo to contribute the majority of the beats on this album. Atmosphere's own Ant contributes to the beat on Standby, my favorite cut was conjured up by Madd Crates....V-Traxx, Maker and Thaione Davis add their own personal flavor to the rest of this album. Bottom line, this album is a must have for any fan on real lyricism or the Rhymesayers junkie like myself. Add this gem to the collection.

4 out of 5 stars On The Short List {4 Stars}.......2006-09-22

I'll admit it, I'm not too fond of most female rappers. I usually write them off after about one verse. It's not that I'm sexist or anything like that, but most of the time I have trouble relating to their subject matter. It's usually the mainstream rappers like Kim, Fox, Brat, Shawnna, etc... Well, after hearing Psalm One for the first time, I think it's time I rework my theory on female rappers. Her flow is on point, her topics are things I can relate to, and she's hella funny -- basically, you have to respect her talents. Her voice reminds me somewhat of Rah Digga, but with a little less bass. Her topics have more range than just jewels, sex, jerkin' dudes for their cheese, etc... And it's that very reason that I simply can't get enough of bangers like "Rapper Girls" and "Death of Frequent Flyer". She can swing from topic to topic and not miss a beat. She collaborates with Brother Ali on the solid "Standby" and rips the bouncy "Beat The Drum." Even listening to her ride the beat on "The Nine" and "Rap Star" made me crack a smile. I guess what I'm trying to say is females like Psalm One are a rare breath of fresh air. She doesn't even need the "female" qualifier, she's simply a dope emcee. Period.

As far as flaws go, there are a few joints that fall under skip material. The production on "Macaroni & Cheese" is forgettable and the disjointed "Mountain High" is pretty boring. Another problem is that the production doesn't shift gears very often. Otherwise, I think the rest of the album is great.

The Death Of Frequent Flyer is definitely one of the best releases of 2006. Not only is Psalm One on my short list of tight female rappers, she's on my short list of dope rappers, period. I recommend supporting her by adding this album to your collection. We need her around to show aspiring female rappers how it should be done. I, for one, will definitely be looking to buy her old material as well as any future releases.

Standout Tracks: Beat The Drum, The Nine, Let Me Hear, The Living, Sworn Habit, Rapper Girls (My Favorite), Standby feat. Brother Ali, Peanuts, and The Death Of Frequent Flyer feat. Thaione Davis

4 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good.......2006-08-15

This is one of the better albums that has come out in quite a while, and unfortunately, there are a few reasons that MOST people will tend to sleep on it. 1. It's not EVER going to be on the radio. 2. It's a female MC 3. She's not all that likely to get a major label deal and/or ever get on the radio than say Yogi Bear, so... They won't be exposed to it.

As for me, I found this record because of a couple of reasons. The first is that she was on a track with Casual on his last album (Bitin & Freakin) and ripped up the track so hard I wasn't sure of what I had just heard. The SECOND reason was that the album was put out through Rhymesayers Entertainment and they just don't seem to fail. To inform those who don't know about Rhymesayers, let me give you a little list of their bands: Atmosphere, Blueprint, Soul Position, Brother Ali, MF DOOM, Eyedea & Abilities, Boom Bap Project, both Felt (Slug(atmosphere) & Murs (Living Legends)) albums, as well as some lesser known artists with AWESOME albums, such as Musab, Micronauts & POS.

This is your typical Rhymesayers project. The rhymes are fantastic, very "circa 94" feeling, with modern beats that could be used in any era of Hip Hop. Psalm One makes you forget that she's "just" a female mc within about 4 bars, and lets you know that she knows exactly how to rock a mic and that she is an MC to be treated with some friggin respect.

My favorite tracks include "Rapper Girls" and "Standbye" (standbye features Brother Ali). The entire album is really good, the only complaint I MIGHT have is that in some ways PsalmOne seems to work harder on her Battle raps than her introspective ones, which is not really a knock, it's more that the songs can get a touch repetitive. But given that this is one of the best albums I have heard from any female MC, I still can't wait to see where she takes it from here.

My suggestion is that if you like underground hip hop, if you like hip hop like Atmosphere, Murs, Brother Ali, etc. that you should give this album a chance and you won't be disappointed.

FF Kingston, hits the spot! So much "world culture" inspired electronic music pays only lip service to international beats, relegating them to a half second sample on a 5 minute track. But the team at kinkysweet has assembled a splendid collection of sympathetic, deeply evocative grooves. These tracks capture the bass-heavy reggae/dub rhythms direct from kingston and layers them beneath smoother sounds giving this release a distinct laid-back, swish vibe that anyone can appreciate. 5 stars for frequent flyer, kingston. I highly recommend this one for your collection.

Oh Boy, I have a new favorite label, and it's kinkysweet. This mix is lip smacking sweet. I'm only about half way through disc 2 and my pants are twitching. If you're on the fence about checking this out, jump off and jump in. Unfortunately there are no samples available of this on this site but go to kinkysweet's site to preview. Something tells me someone's going to have fun fun fun.
P.S. The NYC Loft Party comp is really good too. Keep up the good work Kinkysweet.

The more I listen to this album the more I love it. You just can't sit still listening to it. Not being a huge Reggae fan, I wasn't exactly familiar with all the tracks (except for the Bob Marley remixes of course!), however these guys really know how to put this stuff together. Highly recommended! I have all the others in the Frequent Flyer series, and this one lives up to the high standards they set on earlier releases.

      Album Description

The greatest dance music producers are influenced by the rhythms of many cultures. The Frequent Flyer series focuses on those locales around the world that have had a profound influence on dance music and Buenos Aires is our next destination. The elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America live side by side in Buenos Aires. This is a city where the sun shines brightly, where people speak passionately and of course where the Tango reigns supreme. Now a new generation of musicians have taken the traditional sounds of the Tango and mixed them with the beats and instrumentation of electronic music to create a whole new, captivating sound.

      4 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2007-04-01

Kinkysweet, the label that produces the Frequent Flyer compilations among others, says, "...for those... who still have a passion for dance music, but whose lives don't necessarily include late night clubbing." I couldn't agree more. I used to go to "Raves" and was into bangin' Techno etc. but as I've gotten older, my tastes have changed. Kinkysweet sets an older & more "sophisticated" tone for this and other compilations and/or DJ mixes. This is more a comment on the series as a whole, as opposed to specifically "Buenos Aires". (Although, "Frequent Flyer: Buenos Aires" is very good.) So far the series is pretty much in the Deep House and Downtempo vibes, usually Disc 1 is mellower and the second disc picks up the pace. Anyway, the whole point is that these CD's are meant to be listened to at a coctail party, BBQ, siting by the pool on vacation reading a trashy novel, or just driving.
I engineer live music at a brewery and while the band sets up, or during set breaks, most often people ask me what I'm playing. Usually it's something from the Frequent Flyer series...

      5 out of 5 stars Unique!!!.......2006-02-02

What a great CD, can't get enough of it, what a mix of great Lounge Music with a very delight sound to your ears of Tango, (Argentinean folk music.) Just Great, Unique!!!

      4 out of 5 stars Good collection........2005-08-11

This cd has a various ranges of music not all techno, dance or electronic but a mix bag of sounds and tunes. I found the latin background really worked with the rest of the sounds on each track. The vocals were very sexy and made the music either lounge like or foot tapping enjoyable. My favorite tunes were:
SAUL COSENTINO - Ultimatum; great sounds
BAJOFONDO / CAMPO FT. VERONICA LOZA - Naranjo en Flor; great vocals
      BAJOFONDO / LUCIANO; great vocals.
MR TEA - No Tengo Tango; great vocal slow.
      Enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent!.......2005-03-13

Some of the songs on this compilation can be found on other CDs, bu t the flow from one song to the next is pure genius!
Cd 1 has more of a bit than CD 2, but don't get me wrong here...they are both gems of the genre!

5 out of 5 stars Laid back intrigue.......2005-02-05

I've been listening to this for two work days straight -- and it keeps getting better. Smooth, laid back but the tango overtones give it a little something extra. Excellent! (Also -- no problems playing on a computer using iTunes).

        2 out of 5 stars don't bother.......2005-09-27

You've probably heard 90% of the music somewhere else. The only redeeming feature is that the music does not seem to be mixed - one track follows another, so for those of us with limited mixing skills, there are a few tracks worth capturing... otherwise, a very dull and less-than-interesting set of cd's.

5 out of 5 stars da bomb ass cd .......2005-09-07

5 out of 5 stars very satisfying album.......2005-06-04

I bought this cd after hearing it at Tower Records and have been extremely happy with it. Both disks are mellow but not sleep inducing, and all the tracks are well produced. Disk one is my favorite, being the less mellow of the two. The first track on disk one is the best in the set. I don't have much of a background in electronic music, but I find this album to be very accessable. Great music for lovin.

        4 out of 5 stars Curry anyone?.......2004-11-09

One disc of Mid tempo, and one disc of down tempo. I didn't recognize many of the names on this album, but having already bought, and loved Frequent Flyer Rio, I was willing to take a chance. This one satisfied my electronic music tastes, but spiced up everything with some seriously eclectic eastern sounds. More downtempo than the Brazilain beats on Rio, but quite satisfying. Nice packaging too.
