Dylan Country

Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
There was a time when country fans didn’t listen to rock music and rock fans didn’t listen to country. It was the way of the world and there was little room for exception. Today, every form borrows from those who came before. Rappers sample jazz and rock, while electronic artists re-envision Elvis. So it’s no wonder that a number of respected country artists would tackle the genius that is Bob Dylan. This disc compiles the greatest countrified versions of Dylan ever recorded.

Includes an out-of-print Buck Owens song, plus collectible tracks by Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs with Bob Dylan, Country Gentleman and Norman Blake. Liner notes by award-winning writer Eddie Gorodetsky, who appeared in the Dylan film Masked And Anonymous.

Two discs of music don't exactly provide for a thorough overview of four decades of recording, particularly if the subject of the retrospective is one of the most important and prolific performers of his time. So The Essential Bob Dylan definitely skates over the leagues-deep oeuvre of Dylan, summarizing his monumental first half-dozen years in disc one and skirting over the following 34 years in disc two. Delving into Columbia's three Dylan greatest-hits packages (though curiously purging "I Want You," a genuine hit single in its day), Essential offers only a few surprises, opting for The Basement Tapes version of "Quinn the Eskimo" over the Self Portrait remake that made it onto Greatest Hits Volume II and tossing in "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack for completists. But this 30-track overview is designed with newcomers, not Dylanologists, in mind. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Bob Dylan is essential.......2007-03-01

Glad I bought this. I'm trying to replace the old vinyl albums I once had and this is a good start to my new collection of Dylan CDs. It satisfies the immediate need until I can afford all of the replacements.

5 out of 5 stars Essential To American Culture.......2007-02-23

Bob Dylan is the greatest living American composer. As essential to his generation as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were to theirs and sure to be remembered with the same reverence. This is a great collection of most of his finest work -- all remastered. An avid Dylan fan, I can't help but notice the absence of some of my favorites, like Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, from Nashville Skyline and One More Cup Of Coffee, from Desire. I guess I would have liked to see a three disk Essential -- he certainly deserves one. That said, it is hard to argue with the song selections. For example, other than the original Greatest Hits collection, which was originally released in the '60's, this is the only other place you can find Positively 4th Street -- his follow-up single to Like A Rolling Stone.

If you want to purchase one disk for your CD collection that best represents Bob Dylan's body of work, this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars Complete Dylan.......2007-01-16

This is the most complete of all the Dylan recordings I have and that dates back to the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Like The Old Days, Only Better.......2006-12-03

This is an excellent collection for those who were Dylan fans back in the sixties. Those of us in the room the first time I played these CDs could sing along with every single song. There isn't a bum tune in the bunch. But unlike those old records I have boxed up in the garage, all cuts sound clean.

I don't have anything profoud to say. I just want to recommend this collection to any old Dylan fans who want to hear it all again -- without the scratches.

5 out of 5 stars "She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind" from Not Dark Yet........2006-09-15

I'm new to Bob Dylan's music and I must say I really loved this cd. I was unsure about listening to it since I wasn't all that enamoured with Dylan's voice but when you listen to music it just clicks into place. Dylan is a master at lyrics and mood. Each song has a unique mood or message that he conveys in what seems like an effortless manner. I fell in love with some of his songs of heartbreak and change.

This compilation is broken into two disks. disk one covers music originally recorded from 1962-1967 and disk two covers music originally recorded from 1969-1999. Bob Dylan life time of music is rather prolific so creating a compilation of his music into two disks must have been a huge undertaking but from a novice Dylan fan I think a great job was done.

I can say with out a doubt that disk one, which covers `62-67, is my favorite from the two although I loved both but I find myself listening to disk one over and over. I have been very moved by his deep emotion on unrealized love with "Don't think twice, It's all Right" and his reflection on every day struggles with "Subterranean Homesick Blues". So many of the songs on the first disc most people have heard recorded by other artists like "Mr. Tambourine Man", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Quinn The Eskimo" which speaks to his wonderful writing and appeal to other musical artists.

Disk two brought more great songs but they have a different feel to them, some how more impassioned and sensual with a touch of humility on life. You see the sensual side in "Lay Lady Lay" and impassioned views on justice with "Hurricane". There is even a little sadness in the second disc, you have to wonder how difficult the 1970's were for Dylan to be able to write so many songs that echoed in the hearts of others. Maybe that's why I like disc one.....less sad. I have to give a big shout out for songs like "I Shall be Released", "Tangled Up In Blue", and "Jokerman".

As I said before, I'm new to Bob Dylan's music but I can also say I am now a huge fan. I'd also like to mention the song "Not Dark Yet" from the second disc, it speaks of a soulful reflective Bob Dylan that I find quite nice.

Great writing, great feeling, great music.

This time selected and programmed by the man himself, the two-disc second installment in Dylan's Greatest Hits series comes off as much more idiosyncratic than its brother, famed songs ("Lay Lady Lay," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall") notwithstanding. An even richer cut-by-cut listen than the earlier best-of, this 1971 set masterfully casts the classics into new light and adds previously non-LP singles (the smashing "Watching the River Flow," with the Amazon.com fave line "People disagreein' just about everywhere you look / Makes you wanna stop and read a book; let's have lunch, Bob"), a then-unheard live 1963 "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," and new, stunning, off-the-cuff takes of "I Shall Be Released," "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," and "Down in the Flood." --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Should have been on a single disc.......2007-04-08

Only complaint I have is this should have been on 1 disc. Disc 1 is 36 minutes flat & disc 2 is 42:23. All 21 tracks could have easily fit on one space-saving 78 minute disc. Only way to justify this being on 2 discs would be to include at least 1 bonus track, which Columbia has done on some other artists' reissues. Other labels have reissued 2 LP sets on 1 CD, such as Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, The Who's Tommy & Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, so they should have done that with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Fans.......2007-02-22

Bob Dylan is always at his best, but this time he may be more on top than usual. The music is fresh, concise, and delivered with enthusiasm. It reminds me of a time when the music and the story were the most important issues.

5 out of 5 stars Staying Alive with Bob .......2007-01-04

My husband gave away our old stereo equipment, including the Thorens record changer. What is a girl to do? I bought my favorite tunes from Amazon! Can't live without Bob. I got his 2006 album as well. Yah! Good!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Dylan Hits Collection.......2006-11-04

The first Dylan hits collection has all the famous stuff from the mid-Sixties: Blowing in the Wing, Mr. Tambourine Man, Like a Rolling Stone, The Times They Are A-Changin' etc. Those songs are indispensable to any rock collection.

But I think I like volume two better. This collection has twice as many songs as the first hits album, and the songs are mesmerizingly beautiful and skillfully written.

Another reason why I like this collection better than volume one is because the songs on volume one have been played to death on the radio. I love the melodious pop folk sounds of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, "My Back Pages," and "I Shall Be Released."

I also like the hard rocking "Maggie's Farm," the soft rocking "All Along the Watchtower," the country melody of "If Not For You,' aw heck, I like them all.

It should also go without saying that every single Dylan album from the 1960s is absolutely 5 star material, and some of his later albums are vastly unappreciated (Slow Train Coming, Infidels).

I highly recommend Greatest Hits Volume two as a great place to experience the diverse and beautiful sounds of Bob Dylan.

5 out of 5 stars a really great collection.......2006-08-29

the funniest thing ,i think, about this album is that it came out in the 90s.his 1st greatest hits album came out in 73.that was supposed to cover 73 and back.this new one sgould have picked up in 74 and went till its realease.however all the songs are oldies from the 60s,hinting maybe the 70s and 80s werent nearly as good.anyhow, theres "dont think twice its alright"-catchy."lay lady lay"-a beautiful love song."stuck inside mobile with the memphis blues again"-upbeat and catchy."ill be your baby tonight"-a sort of love dovey song abour a one night stand.only dylan!!!!!!!!!!"all i really want to do"-lyrical genius!"my back pages" is a song about reversing the aging process."maggies farm" is the dylan equivelant of "take this job and shove it!"."tonight ill be staying here with you" is good just like all the rest.ok disc 1 is down .now disc 2."she belongs to me" still sounds fine."all along the watchtower" is classic!then theres "mighty quinn the eskimo"-wtf???????????and "just like tom thumb blues".i guess they canr all be winners.then "a hard rain is gonna fall" a jim morrison like song but full of love like john lennon."if not for you"is singable."its all over now baby blue" is very pretty.then a few extras for space i think.this album kicks butt!

Amazon.com essential recording

The Basement Tapes can be heard as a manifesto for the '90s' underlying Americana agenda or as the greatest album never intended for commercial release. Homegrown 1967 recordings taped in the Band's fabled Big Pink hermitage in Saugerties, New York, many of the 24 songs resonated across American and English rock and folk long before their belated 1975 release through studio interpretations by the Byrds, Fairport Convention, Manfred Mann, Peter, Paul & Mary, and numerous other acolytes, as well as through myriad unauthorized bootlegs. Good as the covers were, Dylan and the Band rolled their own with an extraordinary coherence that sounds only more authentic in these rough-hewn, intimate, always musical performances, which dovetail with Dylan's stark John Wesley Harding and the Band's stunning debut, Music from Big Pink as well as the presciently lo-fi The Band. At a time when most rock culture was entranced with its post-atomic origins, these songs sounded timeless, plunging into pre-industrial folk, turn of the (20th) century barrelhouse and blues, and crackling, vintage rock & roll excursions with offhand verve and a thrilling disregard for what was hip. Time has only reinforced their visionary power. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Under-appreciated Bob and the Band.......2007-05-17

this was hard to get ahold of - a shame, because it's a must-listen

5 out of 5 stars Raucous missing link.......2007-01-13

A lot of big hardcore fans are up in arms about the incompleteness and misrepresentation of The Basement Tapes. I'm a big fan, but I'm not hardcore. I'd love to hear the complete Tapes, but mostly I'm just happy that I have these CD-quality versions to listen to. These songs are a great snapshot of Dylan's reaction to the public's insatiable desire for serious music and an essential step in The Band's evolution from The Hawks, to Dylan's backing band, to their own unique animal.

It's great to hear Dylan and the boys having a good time, and I don't really mind if the songs are half-baked--the playing is top notch, and the fun they're having is infectious. Songs like "Million Dollar Bash" and "Please Mrs. Henry" reflect Bob's still razor-sharp skill with lyrics, but also his humor which hadn't been this straight-up since his early albums (before the expectations). The Band shines as back-up, with Garth Hudson, as usual, providing the most accomplished accompaniment, with Richard Manuel and Rick Danko chiming in with gorgeous harmonies.

The Band's solo recordings (likely later interpolations) are good, but not as shining as their collaborations with Dylan. Still, "Katie's Been Gone" is ear candy, as is the unusually listenable Robertson vocal on "Bessie Smith." On the other hand, Dylan singing later Band hits like "Tears of Rage" and "This Wheel's On Fire" is pretty interesting, but it's hard to let go of the amazing definitive versions The Band cut on Music From Big Pink. A couple other great classics are "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Nothing Was Delivered," (brilliantly covered by The Byrds on Sweetheart of the Rodeo).

All in all, The Basement Tapes may not be complete or historically accurate, and it might not be as weighty or serious as Dylan's earlier work, but it's a heck of a lot of fun and a pleasure that I have repeatedly enjoyed listening to. Maybe someday we'll get the rest . . .

5 out of 5 stars get it if you don't have it.......2006-08-10

this is one of my favorite bob dylan records...I really don't care where or how it was made, it's perfect. dylan's giddy free-associating no longer sounds like the facile ramblings of a clever english lit dropout; his imagination has matured, but still has its freshness. his voice is unaffected and spontaneous; he sounds as though he's comfortably out of the spotlight, free from the pressures of being his generation's guru, and the feeling of creative delight between dylan and the band is infectious.

the songs are filled with quirky, surreal western scenarios (john wesely harding has a similar theme but lacks the exuberance of these recordings), with a wide emotional range from mournful to silly. the narratives sound vaguely inspired by the spaghetti westerns of that time--they seem to describe what goes on in those oddball towns when clint eastwood leaves...

the melodies are interesting and somewhat different from dylan's usual songs--they sound as though they were composed collaboratively. the arrangements, although rough, are also very rich; the instrumental and vocal parts are more integrated than on most dylan albums. it is also refreshing and unusual to hear dylan actually sing along with his band during choruses. this creates a "one of the boys" tone to the recordings, as opposed to his usual lonely poet/messiah/comedian persona.
the band's cuts are great too, and although they were apparently made at a different time, they fit in perfectly. with dylan as their mentor (whether or not he was present) they sound better here than on most of their later recordings, where their scruffiness gets increasingly stifled by studio slickness.

the one puzzling deficiancy of this album is the ommission of "quinn the eskimo"-- this was perhaps the most well-known song from these sessions (it actually became a hit for manford mann), but I've only seen it on one dylan rarities collection.

3 out of 5 stars We need a bootleg series edition.......2006-07-27

I know, I know . . . it seems inevitable perhaps that one will be produced someday. But as Columbia (and Dylan himself) have made major errors in reading the public's desires (see Infidels and the upcoming Bootleg Series addition) when and if in fact this will happen is anyone's guess. So I propose that anyone who would like to see a re-mastered authoritative edition (and not another "best-of" watered down compilation of live or alternate versions of Dylan tunes that, while wonderful, have been packaged and re-packaged in some form or another over and over again - - how many live versions of "Blowin' In the Wind" do we need anyway?) of some of the finest material Dylan ever produced ("Sign On the Cross" and "I'm Not There (1956)" (the latter of which has provided the title for a MAJOR MOTION PICTURE for God's sake) as well as covers of "Four Strong Winds" and "A Fool Such As I" and alternate tracks of great, if lesser known, tunes too numerous to list here) please take the advantage of this forum and simply respond to this review as helpful. Perhaps then Columbia will get the message. And hopefully they'll have the wherewithal to hire someone like Greil Marcus or Paul Williams (and not Jeff Rosen, who should have been fired from the Bootleg Series long ago) to oversee the project and make sure this music is finally given the treatment it deserves. "Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff."

1 out of 5 stars How anyone in their right mind can compare this to Blonde..........2006-04-03

...on Blonde, I don't know. One is a fully realized landmark album recorded with the best studio talent in Columbia's Nashville division backing a genius songwriter at the height of his career. The other is a collection of half-written joke songs recorded who knows where by a painfully average tour band backing a guy who sounds half drunk and bored. And, as others have pointed out, glomming a bunch of lame Band songs onto this mess is both commercially fraudulent and artistically reprehensible. As a bootleg it was mildly amusing. As a commercial release it's an insult.

Don't believe the hype on this one. If you're a Dylan fan, you already know how worthless this stuff is. But if you're just starting to work your way through his albums, save your money here. You aren't going to find a continuation of the '65-'66 albums. What you'll find is the beginning of a long period of serious suckitude only broken in 1975 w/Blood on the Tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Over Easy.......2007-07-05

For those who think you don't like Dylan, this one is worth a listen. The voice is almost velvety, the lyrics accessible, the songs melodious, and the musicianship superb. The most underrated of Dylan's albums, perhaps due to brevity or lack of "gravitas"

5 out of 5 stars really good.......2007-04-10

This is the Bob Dylan album you play for people who don't believe the man is capable of writing good vocal melodies. This short album is FILLED with little songs that range from quiet and emotional to upbeat and friendly. All done in a country-rock style, too. Not a lyrical journey- a musical one. Worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Throw my troubles out the door.......2007-02-20

Is it really any wonder
The love that a stranger might receive.
You cast your spell and I went under,
I find it so difficult to leave.

4 out of 5 stars A great reason to quit smoking lays within this CD...........2007-01-27

This should be an advertisement on why people should quit smoking. Dylan actually sings here, and he sings beautifully. His voice sounds so warm because he quit smoking during these sessions. As for the album, it's short, sweet, and charming, but it's not thought provoking or great Dylan. It passes the time very nicely. It's on the lower rungs of Dylan albums, but it's not awful or anything close to it. A slight, but charming work.

5 out of 5 stars Nashville Skyline-A new sound for a young Bob Dylan.......2007-01-11

This album is one of Bob's most unique. Bob duets with Johnny Cash on North Country Woman, combining two of the most beautiful, eerie talented voices of all times. This album is very county based with very romantic lines in most of the tracks. Certainly one of his best. This album also focuses on the time that Dylan changes his voice to a little deeper, more country rooted mature Dylan. If you are a fan of Bob, I highly recommend this album. I fell in love the first night I put it on.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully understated and subtle..........2007-02-02

This was Dylan's first album back after the motorcycle crash, and it's a moving, mysterious, and poignant album. The songs are shorter than his previous (and later) albums, and the instrumentation is bare to the bone. A lot of rock acts in the 1960's were trying to outdo one another (The Beach Boys put out Pet Sounds, The Beatles try to one up them with Sgt. Pepper, The Stones had Their Satanic Majesty's Request, Dylan had his Blonde on Blonde), so when Dylan made this simple (though not simplistic) album, the rock world was hugely surprised. Considering the turmoil going on in the country (Vietnam, Woodstock, hippies), this album is so far removed from that. John Wesley Harding is an album that's quite surprising in its depth and maturity. It's quickly becoming a favorite, with kudos going to the great song The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest. I saw Dylan do it in concert once (he did all the verse), and it's always been a favorite. But there isn't one wasted song on this album. This was Dylan's last great album for a while. He followed this with the cute (but slight) Nashville Skyline, the godawful Self Portrait, and the decent New Morning. All those albums had some good stuff on them, but they weren't as dynamic as JWH (and its predecessors) were. Quite a beautiful album.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Underrated Masterpiece.......2006-12-10

I remember the surprise upon hearing this album when it came out in December of 1967. It was Dylan's first LP since "Blonde on Blonde" and was preceded by a horrific motorcycle accident and, then, a reclusive hiatus of nineteen months at Dylan's home in Woodstock, NY. "John Wesley Harding" signaled a major turning point in the mercurial artist's career, a downturn from the rock music of "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde" toward an acoustic minimalist country genre of guitar, bass, drums, mouth organ and, of course, that nasal Dylan voice.

Aside from its powerful pioneering force upon other artists of the era, this album stands alone as an artifact of genius and originality. There is no doubt that some of the lyrics tend toward the ridiculous. For example, we hear that John Wesley Harding "traveled with a gun in every hand," and in "As I Went Out One Morning" we hear, "Depart from me this moment, I told her with my voice," and, "I beg you sir, she pleaded from the corners of her mouth." Moreover, the swear euphemism "Judas Priest" seems corny in "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest."

But so what? There are stories to be told here, and the fact that they remain veiled in meaning and, at times, use weird phraseology, endears them to the listener all the more. In any case, superb musicianship makes this album a star more than anything else. The haunting riffs of Dylan's mouth organ, the punctuating rhythm of Charles McCoy's bass, and the uncanny stick magic of Kenny Buttrey's drums absolutely mesmerize the listener, especially if he's wearing headphones. Buttrey's virtuosity alone makes this album worth every penny. Just put on the headphones and focus on the drumbeat in "As I Went Out One Morning" and "All Along the Watchtower." Buttrey died in 2004 of cancer, but he left an unparalleled legacy of material as a session drummer, and his contribution to "John Wesley Harding" shines on.

Bob Dylan wrote his best song ever for this album: "All Along the Watchtower." Ten months after its release, Reprise Records came out with Jimi Hendrix' "Electric Ladyland" with Hendrix' immortal cover of "Watchtower." Dylan himself recognized Hendrix' cover as better than his own version, and it stands today as the most dazzling masterstroke of rock music history. So there is a lot to be had in this underrated and under-appreciated album. It has stood the test of time and begs to be played over and over and over. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dylan.......2006-11-12

For those who continued to like Dylan after he "plugged in the band", this is an album definitely worth owning. This is a classic album that was quite popular during the Vietnam War. Any fan of Dylan, the 1960's, and the Counter-Cultural movemant should get it.

3 out of 5 stars Give me the live versions!.......2006-11-07

This is not my favorite Dylan album by a country mile. It's not that this is a completely unappealing album to listen to but when I am in the mood for Bob; there are at least 15 records I reach for before this. As Jimi Hendrix and a host of other rockers proved with their cover versions, the fabulous songs are here, it's just Bob's execution that bores me to tears.

Mr. Dylan delights in re-inventing his old songs on stage and I can think of three fairly sterile tunes from John Wesley Harding that have become on stage barn burners in recent years:

Drifter's Escape
Wicked Messenger
Down Along The Cove

The Love And Theft era band (featuring the guitar styling's of the great Charlie Sexton from 1997 to 2002) has rightly been heralded as among the greatest Bob ever performed with and those guys helped Bob find the buried treasure hidden in these fine songs. You can find the modern day arrangement of Down Along The Cove on the Bonnaroo 2004 CD but I wish Bob would put out a Never Ending tour live album featuring these gems. Just as Knocking on Heaven's Door was ultimately delivered in its definitive form on the Before The Flood live album, so these tracks should get their due on a live release.

Bonus tip: Check out intensely rocking versions of Wicked Messenger by The Faces and Jerry Garcia (Legion Of Mary) to get an idea of the power inherent in this song.

One of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled "Man in Me" together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive "Hotel California" and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings." Whether taken as a Coen brothers mix tape, a one-album CD carousel, or an apropos souvenir of one wiggy flick, this is a smart, eclectic buy. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars terrific!!.......2007-06-30

this is a fantastic album, if you like ecclectic music, that is. easily one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad... but missing something........2007-04-17

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?

3 out of 5 stars 8-miles high track... better in movie........2007-03-19

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

4 out of 5 stars what the f*ck?!.......2007-03-06

No Tumblin' Tumbleweeds. That's a bummer, man, uh, you've got to have Tumbleweeds in there, the film f*cking OPENS with it, man, and it's in there again later with the Stranger. This is a f*ckin travesty. F*ck it. I'm goin bowling.

Dylan has issued a large number of live albums in his day, but 1974's Before the Flood deserves special mention because of the presence of the Band behind him. Dylan had recently brought the Band into the studio to record the chart-topping (yet still somehow underappreciated) Planet Waves, which was the first (and, as it turned out, only) studio record he made after leaving Columbia for Asylum. He then asked them along on the subsequent tour, which at the time became the most successful rock tour in history. The fruits of that partnership are contained on this two-CD set, which actually ignores Planet Waves completely in favor of older classics. Although the album includes several strong collaborations, the highlights ironically come during Dylan's solo-acoustic portion, which yields powerful and gritty versions of "Don't Think Twice" and "It's Alright Ma," and during the Band's own exhilarating numbers with Dylan sitting out. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Flat out amazing..........2006-08-10

I have been to 4 Dylan concerts, and they have all been spectacular, with each one better than the last. The press always said he was mediocre live, but I never heard a mediocre concert of his. This album is ablaze with energy, precision, and passion. I play it a lot. Dylan infuses his old material with new arrangements (something he's done his whole career), and it all works. In fact, many of the songs here are superior to their studio versions, especially Like a Rolling Stone and Blowin' in the Wind. Hearing the audience scream (and I mean scream) when Dylan and The Band break into the chorus of Rolling Stone is chilling. The crowd is so massively into it. Even The Band's take on their material is superior to the studio versions. Everyone seems loose and relaxed here, but the playing is really tight. In fact, all the live Dylan albums I have (Before the Flood, Bootleg Vol. 4, Hard Rain, and Dylan and the Dead), only Dylan and the Dead really sucks. The others are magnificent. This is one of the greatest live albums ever...

5 out of 5 stars best dylan recording ever.......2006-01-24

When Robert Zimmerman(Bob Dylan) started, he was a Woodie Guthrie clone. Many of the old Woodie Guthrie type folkies felt that the torch had been passed to a new generation. Many other young people, like myself, prefered Dylan songs done by popular rock groups of the time because Dylan's words were awsome, but the sound wasn't as good as rock music.
Dylan wanted to be a rock muscian, not a singing poet that was marketed as a Savior.
This Album is the dream realized for Bob Dylan. He was a rock star out on tour with "The Rolling Thunder Review"
Dylan gave Rock & Roll a new catagory. Rock music for people who can think.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan + the Band = Brilliance.......2005-11-23

A strong live set from Zimmy and his ex-backup group, the Band. The energy here is everywhere, and though not as much as on Hard Rain, Before the Flood is my favorite Dylan live album out of the three I own, by a mile.
Since this is a live set with Dylan and the Band, not only are Dylan classics Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Just Like a Woman, It Ain't Me Babe, Don't Think Twice It's All Right, All Along the Watchtower, Like a Rolling Stone and Blowin' in the Wind included, but some of the Band's more popular numbers (the Weight, Stage Fright, Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Cripple Creek) are also played. Dylan and the Band are a very good match, and the songs are generally quite good. My problem is Bob's voice. He seems congested, and the same can be said for Hard Rain. Also, why does Lay Lady Lay sound so angry? Bob sings it the way he sang the studio takes of Positively 4th Street and Like A Rolling Stone. Isn't he supposed to be happy here?

5 out of 5 stars A Rocking Good Time.......2005-11-09

This is the second record that Mr. D recorded for David Geffin's Asylum label before he went back to Colombia, (both this record and "Planet Waves" are now with CBS/Sony where all Dylan's stuff is now) and it's a rocking good time of a record. Dylan's voice is right up front and central, the Band's playing is strong. And Dylan performs a very, very angry, version of "It's Alright Ma," where the audience goes nuts when he shouts out, "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked." You have to remember that this record came out during the Watergate scandal, seems Mr. Nixon wasn't to popular with the Dylan crowd. Five stars for this one.

I agree with the post being a bit "political" -hard not to with Bob - But lets not have them in reviews

Yes as the recent DVD (brilliant) clearly shows it was the tour in the UK the the "Judas" etc. booing took hold, I too find it so odd by this time -as said- Like a Rolling Stone was #1 (were they not shipping Lp's to the UK ?)
It did start not when the Band were his back-up band but at Newport with Mike Bloomfield's brilliant pick of side men.
Thinking of Dylan being booed for what is IMHO his best period of music is mind boggling but it was indeed a FOLK festival and Bob was not "unwise" to the power of the Press and keeping his popularity intact.
I must consider "Flood" the Live GEM of the magical match between these *6 men that created ONE Band!

R-
The Royal Albert Hall release is a treat but at that time the drummer was not Levon so this is really the true combination Live

This is a great collection of Bob Dylan's work. There's no way that they could put all of the songs you need from Dylan on one disc but they did there best to include everything. If you get this with the other volumes of greatest hits you are well on your way to having an awesome set.

5 out of 5 stars an awesome album.......2006-08-28

i guess bob was tired od the critics and decided to remind them how good he is and so we got greatest hits vol 3.the opener is "tangled up in blue".it goes on and on about what im not sure, but musicly its sound."changing of the guards" goes on and on but with no stick.onto the rocking "the grooms still waiting at the alter".he says a line i think is funny on this one."she could be respectfully married or running a wh%re house in buenis aries".lol.then "hurricane",a true story about a frame job on a black guy.then the very touching "forever young".its one of my top 5 fave dylan tunes.since we are on the subject of greatest hits...heres my top 5....not in order......[mr tambourine man, forever young, blowin in the wind, standing in the doorway and all i really want to do].anyhow, the epic "jokerman" spins next.its wonferful.theres a couple so so songs called "dignity" and "sergio".dignity at least was trancendendant but segio just wasnt all that."ring them bells" is a listenable church song full of inspiration."gotta serve somebody" was rather redundant."series of dreams" was just weird."brownsville girl" is another one of those good but long songs rgar doesnt really seem to be going anywhere."under the red sky"was ok i guess.lastly there was "knocking on heavens door".this song was great but tragicly short and not even axl roses singing the chorus over and over a billion times changes that.a great album.if you count every live, best of and studio album, itd only be topped by greatest hits 1 and 2,bringing it all back home and blonde on blonde.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER LOOK FROM BOB .......2006-06-27

THIS IS MAINLY A COMPILATION OF WORK FROM VARIOUS PERIODS THAT DID NOT MEET SUCCESS WITH DYLAN'S TRADITIONAL FOLK AND FOLK ROCK AUDIENCES AND WAS REISSUED AFTER HIS REEMERGENCE AS AN ICON IN THE EARLY 1990'S. I PLAN TO DO A LONGER REVIEW OF DYLAN'S EARLY WORKS WHICH I AM BOTH MORE FAMILIAR WITH AND WHICH HAD MORE OF AN EFFECT ON MY GENERATION OF '68. THAT SAID, THERE ARE SOME GOOD SONGS HERE SUCH AS GOTTA SERVE SOMEONE AND BROWNSVILLE GIRL. FOREVER YOUNG HAS TAKEN ITS PLACE AS THE CLASSIC OF BABY-BOOMERS (INCLUDING THIS WRITER)TRYING TO STAVE OFF OLD (OR IS IT MIDDLE) AGE. DIGNITY STANDS OUT AS A SENSITIVE WORK CALLING TO OUR ATTENTION HOW VERY LITTLE DIGNITY THIS SOCIETY AFFORDS MOST PEOPLE. ENOUGH SAID.

5 out of 5 stars A Series of Fine Songs.......2006-05-20

This is a very good record in it's own right. In fact because of the many different styles Dylan uses, it kind of reminds my of a Beatles' record. You know, how the Beatles would switch the lead singer from song to song between John, Paul, George and Ringo. I think because of that Beatles' records never get old. This record is like that. Dylan's voice is so different from song to song, the bands are different. It seems like a record full of surprises, one I know I'll never get tired of and I don't think you'll ever tire of it either.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Just Keeps Getting Better.......2006-05-20

"In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors, looking into the lost forgotten years for dignity." What a line, delivered the way only Dylan can deliver them. The years just roll on and he just keeps getting better. Like a shape changer he keeps changing, redefining himself, putting out new stuff, rereleasing his old stuff, putting out his live stuff and I am always amazed. When I first got this album (I bought it on cassette), I stuck it into the play in my car, because I couldn't wait to get home. "Tangled Up in Blue" came on and I immediately forgot that I was listening to a Greatest Hits record, was taking right back to the first time I'd heard "Blood on the Tracks" and I stayed right there till "Changing of the Guard" came on, not the song I was expecting, but I was immediately hooked right in. Then right onto "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Alter", a down right rocker with a heck of a Gospel flavor. Next comes "Hurricane" a song with a different band, different flavor and that is the genius of Bob Dylan. He can pull you in any direction he wants you to go and you follow.

Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 triple-disc dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics ("Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Shall Be Released"), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals ("Idiot Wind"). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs ("She's Your Lover Now," "Blind Willie McTell," "Series of Dreams") that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These 58 tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. --Ben Edmonds

Buy it. And I dare you to try to remove it from your CD player after hearing it the first time. But listen to it sitting down, or it'll knock you down.

Add 5 stars to the stingy 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Need help with sound quality!.......2007-04-03

Can somebody out there help me with this collection? A few years ago Columbia was remastering the Bob Dylan catalog, and that is when I purchased the 3CD set of his called BIOGRAPH, because on the back of the box it said, Digitally Mastering at Sterling Sound, N.Y.C., with SBM, super bit mastering sound, so I was glad that I waited to purchase it till the remastered version became available, and I`ve been holding off from purchasing this collection till this collection has been remastered as well, in the SBM way that Biograph has. Or prehaps it has been by now, can somebody tell me if Columbia has remastered this collection yet?

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Review.......2007-03-11

I absolutely love this bootleg set. It is the best music purchase I've made in several months; I can say this after having it firmly rooted in my CD player since I received it in the mail. I'm not a "reviewer of music," but watch out for Dylan's version of Idiot Wind in the set. It'll break your heart and leave you wanting more. A MUST have for any Dylan lover!

5 out of 5 stars Hear Dylan again -- for the first time!.......2007-02-24

I've been a huge Dylan fan since I found "Bringing It All Back Home" nestled amongst my mother's Sonny & Cher albums at the age of 17. I'm no completist, but I do have most of Dylan's catalog, including almost everything he released during the 1960's... or so I thought!

The Bootleg Series 1-3 is exhaustive without ever feeling exhausting - the three discs span three decades of Dylan's career, and it just FLIES by you like snapshots in an album, giving you a great sonic evolution of the greatest singing poet the world has ever known. The discs demand immediate re-listens (no really!), and many tracks will beg the question "why the heck didn't THIS ever find it's way onto an album?!?"

For the uninitiated (are there any left?), this collection is a great introduction to Dylan's first 30 years; but to those of us who grew up listening to the man, it serves as a time machine, transporting you back to that emotional rush when you first heard the nasal whine and amazing lyrics of Robert Zimmerman. For some, that's worth it's weight in gold.

Love the Cd has songs I had never heard Bob sing, and everything was just fine.

5 out of 5 stars awesome Bobfest! .......2007-06-22

I was living in NYC and working when I heard this concert announced on the radio. Sold out in minutes! Never did get a ticket, much to my regret but this cd and the accompanying video make me feel as if I was there to celebrate the music of Bob Dylan or as Neil Young proclaimed, 'Bobfest!'. Rarely a week goes by when I don't listen to a few tunes from this concert. The collection of artists could make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame quake in it's boots. John Mellencamp kicks things off in high gear with LIKE A ROLLING STONE. My other favorites are Richie Havens, JUST LIKE A WOMAN. Eddie Vedder, MASTERS OF WAR. The Clancy Brothers really kick it in with, WHEN THE SHIP COMES IN and Shawn Colvin kicks a** with YOU AIN'T GOING NOWHERE. The Band WHEN I PAINT MY MASTERPIECE and what a finish with MY BACK PAGES and KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR. My only regret about this cd is someone should have edited Stevie Wonder's ranting before he kicks off BLOWIN IN THE WIND. Political rants don't belong on this cd, it's all about celebrating the songs of one of our greatest artist.

4 out of 5 stars Great yet disappointing.......2007-06-01

This album is really recommended for Dylan's fans, yet I have to say that some of the artists, including Dylan himself, didn't perform like I have expected.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert.......2007-06-01

Any Dylan fan would appreciate the scope of his compositions, especially if done by such an array of artists. Even though this concert is from 1993, the music holds up. New approaches of Dylan songs by the artists just go to show how the songs are timeless. Johnny Winters take on Highway 61 smokes and My Back Pages is the cut that initially caught my interest. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better!.......2007-05-15

Not much to say, besides the fact that it is what i was looking for: probably one of the best concerts in the last 20 years, some names that have unfortunately disappeared lately but have made the history of modern music. if anyone is interested in live performances and likes bob dylan and all of his friends who play with him here, well don't think twice (got the quotation?) and purchase it

4 out of 5 stars Dylan's 30th Anniversary concert CD.......2007-05-13

Excelent Alblum, A chance to hear other well respected artists versions of some of Dylan's music. We all know Dylan's music, his own unique vocal and lyrical style which make his work, lyrics and music his own, Somewhat surprisingly to me, it confirms that good lyrics and music can be adapted to other artists styles and still remain good, if different in style and arrangements to the original versions. (Does Dylan every deliver any song in the same way twice ?.I think not)
The list of talent performering at this concert also shows the respect in which Dylan is held by his peers, world class talented artists queued for a chance to perform live Dylans material. Those who really know, It really works..
