One of the greatest tenors ever.......2005-03-15

When Fritz Wunderlich died (tragically, in an accident) at the
age of 36, some of Opera's greatest experts and critics were
devastated and called his death a "heavy blow to music."

How true. Wunderlich never had the chance to get international
exposure at the level modern tenors do. He lived in the "wrong era", before media hype, and he died youg - much too young.

Yet even today, Wunderlich experiences a remarkable renaissance.
The world has (re-)discovered this gorgeous voice. Monaco and
Corelli had more power (though not much more), Bjoerling's and
Pavarotti's and Joseph Schmidt's timbres were more ringing (though not much more), Di Stefano and Carreras sang more sweetly (though not much more), and Bergonzi's and Tucker's belcanti were fabulous.

But hardly any of those had all thoe qualities combined like Fritz Wunderlich. Listen to his breathtaking musicality when he sang Mozart, his effortless height, his clear diction (probably unparalleled by any opera singer ever), his phrasing, his passion when he sang Verdi or Puccini.

And his height ... has there ever been a tenor who could reach,
seemingly without effort, the high D (no printing mistake...)
the way he did in "Granada" ?

And not just that he hit the high notes. It's how he hit them:
with expression, intelligence and, wherever required (mainly in
song and operetta), with wit and charm.

His Lieder are exemplary, his Italian songs probably more impressive than most Italian tenors'.

If one imagines that Wunderlich was just at the beginning of his career, one shudders at how great he would have become. I think he would have been mentioned in one breath with Caruso and Gigli.

What a huge loss to music, indeed.

One Of The Finest Male Singers We Will Ever Know.......2000-10-29

I don't claim to know a great deal about opera and my knowledge of great classical music singers -- German or otherwise -- is limited to the usual list of suspects and divas. But as far as I'm concerned, Fritz Wunderlich possessed one of the greatest God-given voices you will ever hear in ANY type of Western music. If you ever wondered why so many music critics still lament this man's tragic death before he could become a household name, I would advise you to purchase this collection. Good Lord, what a voice! Believe me, once you hear ol' Fritz belt out a few tunes, you won't be thinking of any other male singer in any other type of music (whether it's Pavrotti, Domingo, Melchior, Vickers, Fischer-Dieskau, Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Elvis, George Jones, Sam Cooke or even Bob Dylan) for some time. Herr Wunderlich was simply in a class by himself, and you are also strongly urged to get his EMI recording with Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Be warned, though, on that one. Not only will he shatter your heart with his singing of Mahler's sad lyrics, but he's liable to cause you lockjaw with his unique, incomparable phrasing.

This is an inspirational CD, collecting some of Rev. Graham's sermons and heartwarming music from his many years of service to the Lord. Who can resist Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, The Lord's Prayer, Just As I Am, and others - they bring tears to the eyes and lump to the throat.

Well re-mastered collection of historical recordings.......2007-05-14

This 2 CD set gives a rather complete overview of Richard Tauber's recordings for voice and orchestra made between 1919 and 1946. I assume that most listeners will be attracted to only one of the two CDs, as the musical material contained in the discs aims at different audiences. Fans of opera, like myself, who value Tauber as one of the greatest lyrical tenors of the last century, will enjoy his legendary renditions of Mozart arias like "Il mio tesoro" (Don Giovanni) or "Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön" (Die Zauberflöte) on CD 1. As a lyrical tenor Tauber to this day has been rivalled in the German-speaking world only by Fritz Wunderlich. Those listeners, on the other hand, who like Tauber for his interpretations of Lehár operetta and popular evergreens like "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" or "Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame" will be more than happy with CD 2.

Without intending to offend anybody's musical preferences, I still feel that waltzing along in Viennese dialect was not what Tauber's musical talent and mastery of voice were actually asking for. I, therefore, regret that in his later years he increasingly moved away from singing "grand opera" towards performances of lighter music.

Keeping in mind that the latest recordings of the present set were made in 1946 (two years before Tauber's premature death from lung cancer), nobody should expect high-fidelity stereo sound. However, all songs were carefully re-mastered, making the most of the original material, e.g. reducing background noise to a minimum and lifting Tauber's voice to the centre (sometimes making the orchestra barely audible). For all fans of the great Austrian tenor - whatever their musical orientations may be - this 2 CD set is a must.

One of McTell's best albums..........2002-05-17

Excellent solo live show from mid-70's. Ralph's voice and guitar are in fine form and the set choice is excellent! This is a good a place as any for the McTell "newbie" to start. CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS REVIEWS: Tracks 1-4 & 18 have never been issued ANYWHERE (UK or otherwise) prior to this disc. Also, Danny Thompson is not a "sideman" on this album. He was, however, in the audience during the London portion of this album. McTell is completely solo.

Essential McTell.......2001-08-16

If I were looking to buy my first Ralph McTell album, this is where I would start. This live CD recorded in 1976 captures his masterful finger-style guitar and personality better than any of the "best of" compilations.

Essential McTell.......2001-01-20

I purchased this recording (on vinyl) in 1977 almost by chance and had been listening to it throughout the years until the advent of the internet and the emergence of the cd. The version available here in the states was an abbreviated version that left out songs #1-4 and #18. What a pleasant surprise to hear this recording in it's entirety. This is McTell at the top of his form... great songs and what I particurarly enjoyed is he makes great use of the "live" format, explaining some of the songs. This has definetely been in my top 5 play list over the past 23 years! I highly recommend it to anyone not familar with his work.

good live set.......2000-10-06

This very good live set by McTell features material from just about all of his early albums, including five from "Not Till Tomorrow" (to my ears clearly his best album overall). McTell was never very well known in the U.S., but in England, thanks in part to his major hit 'Streets of London,' he became a star. For good reason: he was one of the very best songwriters of his generation (and a pretty good guitarist to boot!). This album does a fine job of showcasing his talent.
