    Album Description

2007 second volume of unreleased Orb treasures. Few artists have created such visionary and influential Electronic music as Alex Paterson and his various incarnations of The Orb. The Orb's blissed-out music helped define the emerging Ambient-Techno/House genres blending natural sounds, spoken-word, heavy dub bass lines and constantly shifting beats with a wry sense of humor, rolling rhythms and exhilarating samples to revolutionize UK dance clubs, '90s rave culture and influence a whole generation of artists now plying their trade in the 21st century. This second collection features collaborations with legendary German composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Thomas Fehlmann, Andy Hughes, Vincent "vin100" Crane and Alex's long-standing friend and musical accomplice Youth. Malicious Damage.

The first Orb album was entirely new when it appeared: a low-key dance record, with echoes and swells more than up-front tunes, stoner-level dub bass, and all sorts of samples and sounds--seagulls, film clips, astronaut voices, bits of disco--fluttering through the mix like hallucinations. Essentially a techno album for tired dancers, it's held up nicely over time, thanks to its intricate, dreamy sonics. Beyond the classic "Little Fluffy Clouds"--a set of interlocking synth hooks and loping percussion, held together by a cut-up sample of Rickie Lee Jones talking about the skies of her youth--there are lots of mellow delights here, particularly the blissful reggae groove "Perpetual Dawn." --Douglas Wolk

    5 out of 5 stars A "trip" indeed!.......2007-04-05

This is easily one of the most influental albums in electronica. It is of course, a classic of the genre (Ambient House/ Dub). One thing that people seem to miss is that the album is not just a journey in the figurative sense, but also thematically.
First off, the track number's aren't typical (1. 2. 3. etc.), but are known as Earth Orbit One, Earth Orbit Two etc. progressing through Lunar Orbits, on to Ultraworld Probes until finally by the last track, Ultraworld Ten- "A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating Brain That Rules from The Center Of The Ultrworld: Live Mix MK 10" The music follows suit. The farther out towards the "Ultraworld" the album goes, the more "spacey" the album gets.
Also, it's the first in a three album cycle. The second album, "U.F.Orb" is equally as good if not a little better than "... Ultraworld", but it's the Orbs return journey from the Ultraworld. Finally there's "Orbus Terrarum", which as the title suggests finds the Orb exploring Earth itself with song titles like, "Oxbow Lakes" & "Valley".
Do I have too much time on my hands?

5 out of 5 stars The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld.......2006-04-13

I can't believe no one has reviewed this album.

I first heard of it through pitchforkmedia.com's best albums of the 90's list and I enjoyed it upon first listen, though it is a little intimidating. By contrast "Little Fluffy Clouds," the opening track, was the albums single and starts an intense and foreboding album off on a tangible and rewarding foot.

I describe this album as intimidating for a few reason's. It's huge. Songs are very long and not one doesn't fit the overused description of "epic." It's house music, but the sound reminds me a lot of the sound experiments of "Echoes" on Pink Floyd's album Meddle. It also reminds me of the Boredoms Vision Creation Newsun in that the album is a sort of song cycle. It has to be listened to in one fell swoop (or at least it's hard to imagine someone putting just one of these songs on repeat). It's an album of intense atmosphere, but the songs are good enough that you needn't only dwell on one thing that makes the album intriguing.

It's hard to recommend this album to anyone not knowing what music it fits into. It is house music but, that being said, if I read this review I might not be too intrigued (not being too into that specific genre). But how about this; From one music geek to another- this is one of the most interesting and repeatable albums from a decade of many interesting and repeatable albums. I don't think you would need to be afraid of this excellent album because it doesn't fit in with your collection.

Certainly not an album for everyone. If you are at all interested in the different possibilities in sound and music I would recommend this album. I don't think I would recommend it to someone I work with.

5 out of 5 stars Though uneven and definitely not for everyone, "Adventures" is an influential album that ambient fans will love.......2006-01-03

The Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" was essentially one of if not THE first ambient house album (it at least inspired other artists and (somewhat) popularized the genre - "Little Fluffy Clouds" is a very appealing track). It is, admittedly, a little uneven. If you've only heard the song "Little Fluffy Clouds", be prepared for a quick change of pace. The rest of the album is very ambient and very experimental, but for ambient fans and the open-minded it's very interesting stuff to listen to. My personal favorites are the first three tracks, and the rest I don't think are as fun to listen to as a whole (they're definitely very good, though). It's not ambient in a traditional sense - there's definitely a beat in most of the songs which help keep them accessible. What's also great is how you're essentially getting two albums for the price of one (actually more like the price of 1.5 albums)! If it weren't for this fact and its influence on the world of music, I probably would've given it a 4.5. Ambient and electronica fans will definitely love it, though. Even if most people won't like the album as a whole, they'll most likely enjoy "Little Fluffy Clouds". Highly recommended!

    Highlights include:
    the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars The start of something new.............2005-08-23

This album created a movement thats been slowly evolving ever since. Comparable to Future Sound of London's 'Lifeforms' or 'Dead Cities' this journey into musical bliss is layered with beautiful yet strange samples and textures found only in a handful of electronic artists* ( *see: Future Sound of London , Boards of Canada , Aphex Twin , 2 Lone Swordsmen, Jean-Michel Jarre). As one reviewer already said this release was way ahead of its time. This album is a mix of different styles from ambient to dub to acid house which at some points is more dance oriented than strictly ambient. With almost 2 hours of music on 2 cds this might seem long but does it ever fly by. I enjoyed this album as a whole rather than just having favourite tracks. If you're into sci-fi and space exploration you deffinately need to buy this. I recommend smoking a spliff and sitting back in a lawnchair looking up at the stars and letting your subconcious take over. Its hard to believe its been 14 years since its conception . Only open minds need apply.

5 out of 5 stars A "Trip" Through the Universe .......2005-01-10

The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Underworld may officially be called techno, but it's hardly dance music. This is techno as filtered through a 70's haze of Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream. Pothead pixies Gong are another influence, and former Gongster Steve Hillage turns up here as co-writer and producer on a few tracks.

Your pilot, Dr Alex Paterson, takes control of the spacecraft and guides you to other worlds with a swirling sound collage of beats, samples, music and voices. Your tour of the Underworld and beyond takes place over 10 long tracks on 2 CD's. This is very trippy stuff, like the bands named above with a modern-production cinematic quality.

Favorite tracks are "Earth (Gaia)" (I love that voice-of-God bit) and the space reggae of "Perpetual Dawn."

4 out of 5 stars Music from the empire.......2007-06-01

From the 1700s to the mid-1900s, Britian ruled most of the world at some time or another. Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars The British and their music.......2007-05-30

This CD offers an excellent sampler of traditional British music. If you have watched Chariots Of Fire you will recognize Jerusalem By Parry(the final scene at Harold Abraham's funeral). This is a beautiful selection. The Tam O'Shanter Overture dispells the often unjustified characterization of the stuffy Englishman and is a rousing piece. All in all a very enjoyable CD. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes.......2005-06-29

It is a good choice of tunes played often in England. The quality of recording is good, the choice of tunes is good too and the orchestration is good too. It is a good CD to buy.

This one is for all those who want a splendid introduction to the music this CD offers. It would make a lovely Christmas present for the discriminating listener. My favorite is "Jerusalem!"

An ambient-techno classic, UFOrb captures Alex Patterson and his sonic henchman at their early peak. While the Orb had already created a dance-floor and chill-out-room sensation in 1991 with Little Fluffy Clouds, this follow-up disc displays Patterson's talent for fusing ambient music with dub science and a club culture mindset. Incorporating psychedelicized samples over the era's reigning techno beats and deep reggae bass lines, heady compositions such as "Towers of Dub" and "Close Encounters" are excessive in length but consistently entertaining. The album's highlight is an 18-minute version of "Blue Room" (there's a 40-minute version out there, too), which features the sensual bass playing of Jah Wobble and the oscillating guitar of coproducer Steve Hillage. A most serious contribution to the legacy of the modern DJ. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars Drone ship in orbit..........2006-11-26

I got this album when it was released back in 1992, it is the limited 2 disc set, the first being the complete U.F.Orb album, the second disc being the complete "Blue Room" (running at 39:58 minutes, and also made it to #8 on the UK charts back then) with two edits and a fourth track titled "Assassin." Compared to some other ambient music in my collection from back then, these two albums have aged extremely well. I think the key to this is the number of different sounds and samples - it never relies on synth pads to make its point. All of the music on both discs have enough burbles, wild cat noises, NASA conversations, throat clearings, melodies show snippets (one funny one; a portion of the background intro music from the Nintendo SNES game "Darius Twin" appears as the main melodic line in "The Blue Room (Remix)" on the bonus disc - fits in amazingly well, has a great sinister sound to it) and interesting sounds to make it a happy listen.
The 40 minute version of "Blue Room" and "Towers of Dub" are my favorites, Towers features some nice harmonica work and a great sample from Woody Allen's "Sleeper." One of the most played albums from my collection. Thank you very much Alex Paterson. Highly recommended - buy the album, take it for a spin and go meet Haile Selassie at Babylon & Ting.

4 out of 5 stars If "Ambient Dub" could have a classic album, this is it!.......2005-08-27

Techno, Trance, Ambient-House, and the such have truly saturated the music market of the last 15 years. So much so, that most of it hardly gets heard by anybody because there is so much of it. And so much of it can all sound alike. Even the ultimate techno fanatic could not possibly hear it all in his (or her) lifetime. And what's more, VERY few new Techno artists, can have, what the world would call, a "classic album".

I still believe the humble beginnings of techno music, was simply called "electronic music" or by today's terms - "electronica". And that all began in the 1960's with Kraftwerk (Organisation), Silver Apples, and even Walter (now Wendy) Carlos. Moog music was another term for electronic music. In the 1970's, the early stages of "Techno" started to show up even more. Artists like Tomita, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and Jean Michel Jarre, were all brave pioneers of a new sound in music, a new cold electronic sound.

I'd be willing to say that the first successful "Techno" album has to be Kraftwerk's 1977 album, "Trans Europe Express". It's even sampled often by many of today's Techno-Ambient House artists. The earliest album that I could call the bravest venture into spacey electronica is Tangerine Dream's 1971 album, Alpha Centauri". Check out "Fly and Collision of Coma Sola" off this album. It's simply mind-blowing!

With the music market suddenly getting slammed with new ventures in Techno, Ambient House, Trance, Electronica, IDM, Ambient Dub, etc., suddenly in the early 1990's comes THE ORB. With their first triple album set "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld", the world was introduced to another whole new adventure in electronic music, that earns universal success. Their first commercial successful single was "Little Fluffy Clouds". It even received airplay on regular contemporary pop radio. Big time in the UK, I'm sure. Already feeling that this is a new landmark album for the genre, it really blew my mind when their second commercial release "U.F.Orb", came out. When I heard a store playing "Blue Room", I couldn't believe that this was something new from The Orb. They weren't playing the CD of U.F.Orb, they were playing a CD single of "Blue Room" that went on for nearly 40 minutes! Wow! That blew my mind!

In the early days of buying The Orb, the first release of "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, was a single edited CD of the full double CD that came out of the UK, that is currently released worldwide today. I'm actually glad to have this edited version of "Adventures Beyond..." The tracks "Spanish Castles in Space" and "Backside of the Moon" were omitted from this CD. I heard the both of them on a borrowed copy of the double CD, and I found that those two tracks (that are together on CD One), offered a very long, boring 30+ minutes of very uninteresting sound passages. Plus a few of the other tracks are a little different. "Perpetual Dawn" on my copy, is a shorter more upbeat, reggae-version, which I enjoy more. Thank God I have this (now totally obscure) initial US release.

The early release of "U.F.Orb", offered a bonus CD of a few remixed extras, which included a rare track called "Assassin", and the "ardently sought after", 40 minute version of "Blue Room". I also have an alternate mix on "Towers of Dub", which is really cool.

Notice on "U.F.Orb", the regular version of "Towers of Dub" has the very same percussion used on Pink Floyd's, "On the Run" from the "Dark Side of the Moon" album. The Orb seems to like to mess with your head about making Pink Floyd references. On my two Ultraworld albums, the building that was on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album "Animals", are on these Orb releases. And also, check out the Orb's "Live 93" album. It's not a pig, but it is some sort of animal jumping over a power plant, just like the pig jumping over the building on Pink Floyd's "Animals", album. I am certain that there are probably alot more hidden Pink Floyd references thoughout their other albums. The Orb started to lose their uniqueness for me after "U.F.Orb", They started to sound like typical Ambient House music. No longer the innovators that they use to be.

Another totally hard to find CD is a remix follow-up to their first album. If you can find it, get The Orb's, "Aubrey Mixes: The Ultraworld Excersions". It has a really cool, jazzy version of "Little Fluffy Clouds". Other scarce obscure CD releases of early Orb, are "Ultra Rare Trax", and "Morphology". These two were never commercially released, and were very expensive inside the locked-up glass cabinet of the CD store I bought mine from.

It seems though, that the sound of The Orb has become outdated when compared to today's new "electronic sound" known as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, and the such are todays Techno wizards.

The latest releases from The Orb are "Cydonia" and "Bicycles and Tricycles". Nothing fabulous, but I think they are a little more appealing than what The Orb has done with "Pomme Fritz" and beyond. "Orblivion" has a few great tracks, but the album, as a whole, has too many weaknesses that loses my interest quickly. I don't think that The Orb will ever have another "classic" album like their first two. But, those two are certainly to be cherished. I can't wait for their 20th Anniversary re-releases. I believe that The Orb will be praised again for their contribution to Techno-Ambient-Dub at that time.

5 out of 5 stars The sound of an epoch.......2005-07-23

This is a condensed version of the original triple vinyl release of 'U.F.Orb', which came 'hermetically sealed' in blue-grey PVC and had to be cut open with knife or scissors - a typically elaborate Paterson/Cauty marketing gimmick that also seemed to say something about how they viewed The Orb as a cultural project. It was as if 'U.F.Orb' was a time capsule, a distillation of the sprawling experiments on 'Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld', a sealed container flung into space to show the rest of the universe what it was like on Earth (or at least in Britain) in 1992.

As a summation of a point in musical time, it's as evocative as 'Revolver' or 'Ziggy Stardust' or 'Sound Affects'. And like all of those, there's something ineffably British about the way The Orb took beats from Detroit, minimalist compositions from New York and dub from Jamaica, and stretched and warped them into a completely new form. If the clubs were full of house and techno, the bedrooms were full of smoke and ambient dub, and The Orb were responsible for much of it.

'U.F.Orb' is their finest achievement, proving that 'Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld' wasn't a novelty record but the herald (along with The KLF's 'Chill Out') of a new genre. The sound here is both denser and more dubby, with more going on but less dependence on the BBC sound effects records and slowed-down house beats that were the backbone of their earlier work. 'Blue Room' (here edited from its 39'58" single length) and 'Towers of Dub' are the standouts, but The Orb's legacy is even more impressive than their music. You can hear it not only in experimental 'dance' music from Shpongle to Monolake, from Portishead to Lemon Jelly; it's embedded in mainstream pop, soundtracks and muzak the world over. And if you still have that triple vinyl release, with the PVC intact, I bet it's worth a fortune.

5 out of 5 stars One of 'Ambient House's' Most Enduring Classics............2005-07-21

Before Acts such as 'The Orb' (as well as: 'The Black Dog, The Klf, Biosphere & Global Communication), the only sort of ambient music largely recognised by the general public, was the reflective sort of reflective, somber compositional ambient music favoured by the likes of 'Brian Eno'. But acts like 'The Orb' with their 'Ambient-House', was a relatively new term/Genre. It took the serenity & cerebral atmospherics of 'Ambient', and coupled them with synth pads, strings, keyboards, sampling & midtempo beats, to create a dreamier and progressively freewheeling sound of 'House' & 'Electronica'. The Duo (Dr. Alex Paterson & Jimi Cauty) take the technique of eclectic sampling, and a heavy emphasis on beat-oriented sounds, and reverb, bass and percussion, and forged several exceptional albums that retained the textured, placid tones of ambient, with the post-rave rhythmic aesthetic of Electronica. And coupled it with trip-hop grooves that successfully marry, themed tracks of 'Space Travel', Spoken Word, floatable tones & ethereal melodies.

The first track "O.O.B.E." brings with it, a soothingly cinematic synth arrangement, that is a fair indication of the sort of widescape sound, that you can expect from this stunningly atmospheric track. Think of the sort of Hushed, and delicate ambient textures used on 'Brian Eno's' ambient series of albums, with the serene lilting ambience, that his albums were acclaimed for, but with slight piano keys interspersed & the most restrained use of vocal snippets, that seem to touch on subjective and conscious thoughts...this is electronic music for the mind. And the use of looped beats isn't intergrated until some 6 Min's into the track, signalling the transition into Ambient-House. The theme here (and throughout the album in fact), is 'Travelling Through Space', with various metallic techno-futuristic samples, and dense detached rhythms & free-form ambience, seamlessly intergrated. Yet still retaining that all important balance between subtly detached ambience, and possessing synthesised ambient beats mixed with vocals.

The second track "U.F. Orb" mixes swirling, cascading synth work & expertly modified vocal sampling (alarm sounds, Dialogue from the 'Space Program', Environmental sounds...etc), before being replaced with uptempo techno beats (with a sublime use of high-hat rhythm breaks) moving at a relatively quick pace, that works alongside a superb, heavy echoey reverberated dub bass sound. Although the actual arrangement is simple, in its implementation, the effect is similar to a particularly well-judged fusion of World Music mood and instrumentation, intergrated with the smoked-out sounds/grooves of instrumental Dub. This is a beautiful pairing of Western Dub Fusion, and a complete contrast to the subtle tones of the previous track.

"Blue Room" is a epic track, the likes of which the 'Air-Raid' sirens to signal the beginning of the track should make that painfully clear, this is then mixed with subtle organs playing in the background, with subtle sounds & buzzing electronic sounds (along with a curious bubbling effect) and cold industrial sounds are all skillfully placed, with the effect carefully intergrated through the use of cleverly Cut & Manipulated editing, that fleshes out the long stretches of atmospheric organ. The occasion female vocal sample of "Awwwww- Whoooah" (taken from a early 90's UK Rave Track), provides the perfect canopy for the transition into thumping bass, that feels like its been modified to emulate thumping beats, this is insistent driving bass, with the harsh edges softened to resemble late-night Ambient-techno. Various snippets of mechanical sounds, Dialogue, Turntable effects (turntable spinback effects) & engaging synths, are all overlayed throughout the track, but care has been taken to give ample space to each sound, and thoughtfully stretched out intelligently over the 17Min's that this track runs to, and such is the beautifully devised arrangement, the time literally flys by, when listening to this astonishing track.

The overriding musical theme for "Towers of Dub" is (Obviously) DUB!!, a recorded telephone message or someone ringing "London Weekend Television" (UK television Broadcast), and getting through to a security guard to leave a message, is a highly amusing (or disorientating if you live outside the UK), start to the track. Bizarrely, the frequent use of : dogs barking, chirping birds and rhythmic sounds float in and out of the mix, are all firmly put in the shade by a truly stunning Harmonica sample playing throughout the track, mixing wonderfully with the heavy instrumental Dub, that is produced with pin-point keyboard and electronic sampling, and skitting drum beats audible in the background, the effect of these decidedly synthetic dubby basslines, could arguably have been the work of some of the Dub greats such as "The Mad Professor" or legendary "Lee 'Scratch' Perry", had they decided to make a more electronically orientated album, it's in turns, sophisticated, sprawling and hypnotic, and yet uptempo enough for either late night or daytime listening...working equally as well, whether your chilling out, or merely need some music to lose yourself into. And is so expertly judged and produced that is highlights one of the finest examples of Ambient-House.

The remaining 3 Tracks are all equally up the stunning quality of previous tracks, "Close Encounters" shifts the tempo, and moves into a combination of a blended Chicago electro-house orientated track, matched against the stylisation and experimentation of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), and the low-end ambience of "Majestic", manages to feel like a surreal dreamlike track, encapsulating rhythmically and conceptally, the best attributes of 'The Orb' in an 11 minute breakdown, that at times feels like tightly crafted melodies, and creative samples, working in perfect unison.

There should be absolutely no doubt, that If you are a fan of either 'Ambient House' or 'Ambient Dub', (albums Such as: "Aphex Twins - Selected Ambient Works", "The KLF - Chill Out", "Future Sound of Londons - Lifeforms", "The Black Dogs - Bytes"), that this album is an absolutely essential purchase.
I'm reviewing this album have listened to it for the first time now in 2005, even though it was intially release back in 1992....and surprisingly it still feels vital, and doesn't feel dated. Admittedly if this is your first 'Orb' purchase, then (takes deep breath), you should pick up their incredible "The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" (Double Cd) first, as it is the Duo's Definitive work, with this album a very, very close second. But that album's a sprawlling masterpiece which is a concentrated listen, whereas this albums single cd, is far more manageable listen. And unquestionably stands as one of the genre greatest exponents.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Noosphere (man).......2005-07-12

Mine still has the 'Brit Awards Nominee' sticker on the front. I believe this got to number one in the charts, which was dead unprecedented for what was mostly a lot of multi-layered samples with some beats here and there. For some reason it all worked; I have heard bootlegs of the early sessions which led to this album, and there's no magic in the demos. The Orb's later albums were conceptually similar but uniformly rubbish. But U.F.Orb, whether because the band was going the extra mile, or because of some ineffable fairy dust, U.F.Orb actually worked, it was relaxing, funny, mesmerising, an excellent listen with headphones, as background music, and loudly to dance to in the bits which have beats. The samples are all well-chosen and I can still recite most of them; the bit where there is a snippet from Radio Moscow, followed by loud drums, is the best. The second side of the album is noticeably moodier, with 'Close Encounters' sounding as you would expect a song about UFOs to sound.

It's also a nostalgic album, for people in their early 30s. The pre-internet 'Wired'-era computer whizz-bang space-age techno-pagan futurism of it all was mirrored in contemporary releases by the Future Sound of London, System 7 and so forth, and although this kind of ambient space music is now as dated as krautrock was in 1992, it's heartbreaking to listen to. So many dreams and hopes smashed to bits.

Excellent way to show off a hi-fi system, too, because it has quiet bits and loud bits and they all sound top-notch. 'Sticky End' is a short joke track and 'Majesty' is a bit irritating, but it's otherwise an excellent way to spend fifty minutes or so. Shame they didn't include the lengthy 'Blue Room' single as a pack-in or bonus track (it was basically the album version looped a couple of times, with a different bassline).

And it's "Teilhard de Chardin", it took me ages to find that out; he's the one who conceived of a third world, a world of objective contents of thoughts.

The Orb's third full-length studio album states its intention with its title: where their first two records had explored the outer cosmos of dance music, Terrarum is an earthier, less spacy ambient record, more devoted to mapping the sounds at hand. It goes to extremes to avoid the hooks of their early work, and there's barely even a hint of dance beats. When they do appear, they're mutated, bassy, more to pass through the body than to move to. Considered as music to "listen to," it's mostly pretty dull (though the 17-minute "Slug Dub" is worthy of the Augustus Pablo records and stoned realizations that inspired it). But then Orbus isn't meant to reward attention--it's an album to sit down and dream to. --Douglas Wolk

    5 out of 5 stars A Seperate Orbit.......2007-01-10

I started with this Orb, and went on to others. This favorite leaves the others behind, in my cd case. Something to note about The Orb; it knows how to inject crazy, and sometimes charming humor in a way that causes you to laugh out of surprise in the midst of your reverie.

    5 out of 5 stars Musical Opiate.......2006-08-25

This is by far the best Orb disc, and my 'most played' album ever, by far. There is something magical about this disc, as some members have attempted to explain.
It hits you, it fills you, and it moves you. I remember listening to this in college and having many odd experiences. Listening to this album, while sleeping, will also give you the most vivid dreams imaginable. Its music that truly escapes, transcends, and numbs you. Clear your mind of all and have a listen, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Orbs true labour of love.......2006-03-13

This sounds like their most detailed work..Every track is completely solid, there is no orb filler to be found on this album..An earnest attempt by the artist to be taken more seriously as one, although it would later be found that Patterson is the last artist who would want to continue the seriousness that was this album...Despite the last song having the voice of a drugged out slug telling an almost indecipherible childrens tale in between beats, the music is about the most mature orb have ever put out, that track in particualr being a spellbinding display of overlapping dub beat programming, but on the whole carving out an extremely natural, different direction on every single track, taking electronic, especially Orb, to a classier, less labled place.

5 out of 5 stars get it if you have a brain.......2006-01-30

Pure mastery of the Orbs own sound is what this record is. Pomme Fritz touches the same vein. If you have followed the Orb and have enjoyed their progress up to this records point then you should be blown away. I view this as the Orbs opus. Huge dub basslines, dub delay all masterfully executed. A pure joy to listen to. Paterson is a hero if not electronic god.

plateau is the most beautiful song ever written - period. slug dub is very amusing and sometimes funny. this should be the next album that you purchase.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and Dr. Alex Patterson is feeling just fine. Returning with his seventh release under the moniker of the Orb, the grandfather of ambient house and the master of transcendental techno has made the cheeriest album about millennial tension and apocalyptic craziness that you're likely to hear. Not since Prince's 1999 has the beginning of the end sounded like so much fun. With music industry institutions from MTV to Billboard rushing to proclaim that electronica is the next "next big thing," the contributions of veterans like Patterson and Richard James (a.k.a. the Aphex Twin) are being overlooked, while relatively slight talents such as the Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers are being lauded. Meanwhile, Patterson is at his turntables leading a new version of the Orb with Andy Hughes and Thomas Fehlmann, and the group is making some of the best music of its career. Over the ominous sounds of "S.A.L.T.," a paranoid Scottish preacher predicts that the number of the Beast described in The Book of Revelations is showing up on our credit cards. Elsewhere, a solemn voice intones, "The rocket is waiting," and a perplexed weather girl stumbles when she reads that temperatures tomorrow will be sub-zero, "continued mild." Throw in a snippet from Joe McCarthy's red-baiting Senate hearings and an hysterical commercial jingle with a bouncy chorus about "the youth of America on LSD," and you may find yourself rushing in a panic to the bomb shelter. Considering the subject matter, it's ironic that "Delta MKII," "DJ Asylum," and "Toxygene" contain some of the Orb's happiest hooks ever, as well as the uniquely fluid and jazzy mid-tempo grooves that have come to characterize the combo's live performances. Like the ravers who throw roof-top parties to greet the aliens in Independence Day, Patterson is going out dancing, and judging from the pleasantly disorienting swirl of sounds in his patented Orb mixes, he's probably high as a kite. And why not? In his warped but wonderful vision, the end of the world is just one more groovy trip. --Jim Derogatis

4 out of 5 stars Lots of sounds.......2007-01-26

My friend with good taste told me the Orb "made all the sounds." So I bought a few. Live 93, Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld. They were OK but I wasn't hooked, I sold em. I'm not into the sample thing too much. I'm not into the genre too much really. Too many cliches.

Lot's of kids are easily amused by this kind of stuff, but most of this genre is not so good.

Then I got this one and I understood what my friend meant. It's headphone music. Lots and lots of sounds. I liked it right away and it's grown on me. I like the whole thing. It's cheap too.

2 out of 5 stars An experienced musician on autopilot.......2006-03-13

This album is not terrible, it is quite adequate and even sophisticated in a background music sort of way..It is just not very engaging on the forefront though..We all know Alex is a masterful programmer, but the famework that surrounds his beats this time generally does not hold the listeners attention, the album is mostly a showcase for the spastic and weird, rather then evolving beats that engulf a listener into the most immersive experience techno has to offer..You could definitly track this artist's waxing and waning of artistic zeal, with this album continuing Patterson's return to his more dancy, breezy roots, while incorporating the more twisted, dark elements of his post ultraworld releases..

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Mindblowing !!!.......2006-03-09

I'd say this is The Orb's best album. Although their debut work 'Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld' comes in a close 2nd. This album reminds me of the 1st time I listened to Future Sound of London's 'Dead Cities' or 'Isdn'. Its a journey you can only experience through good speakers or headphones. The sonic textures are rich with vitality and a sense of exploration. Like observing a metropolis as a child or having a dream that you didn't know you could have. Its hard to even classify this album in a genre. Its ambient, idm, trip hop,dub all mixed into one uncontrollable fluid mass. If you want to expand you're musical horizons start by buying this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-03-02

Let's be honest, this genre of music can be very hit or miss. This is a definite hit and well worth the 6 bucks you can get it for on ebay.

Ahh, I think this is my favorite Orb album. VERY trippy, very creative, wildly swings your psyche back and forth to and fro, I'm not even sure what else to say about it that hasn't already been said.. it's perfect!!!!! Of course, like any Orb album, this CD is a story, and must be listened to from beginning to end (including the hidden track) to be appreciated! Also, it took a few listens for most of the other Orbs to grow on me... but I loved this one from the very first listen.

Back in the mid-1990s, the release of a new Orb album would have been something of an event. By 2001, most people had probably forgotten that they still existed (their previous album, Orblivion, was released three years before that, an eternity in the world of modern electronic music). Some music critics even questioned the band's relevance in the 21st century. In an age of sophisticated chill-out tastes, could the Orb still cut it? From the evidence on Cydonia, the answer is a resounding yes. The album sees mainman Alex Paterson fusing rolling dub bass lines and classic Orb ambiance with crisp breaks, shimmering synths, and off-kilter electronics. There are spacious vocal numbers (singers Aki and Nina Walsh sound remarkably like Björk); short, dub-house instrumentals; and spooky, other-worldly drum & bass pieces. It's like rave-era ambient house given a new millennium makeover. It's hardly revolutionary, but that's not the point. As far as space-age chill-out music goes, the Orb are still in a class of their own. --Matt Anniss

    5 out of 5 stars Orbtastically brilliant.......2004-07-27

Astonishing and beautiful, while being almost a 180 change from earlier works. Especially attractive are the standout female vocalists, Paterson seems to be a musical genius. Looping through this entire beautiful cd are the Orb trademarks we've come to know and love, palpable yet ethereal bass and drums which register somewhere between squishy funkiness and haunting fade. Sigh. Wish more people could get things this right. The world might be a better place.

4 out of 5 stars We have a pope! And his name is..........2004-07-03

Of the four Orb albums I have (the others being "Ultraworld", "Orbus Terrarum", and "Orblivion"), this is almost certainly my favorite. Somehow filling a happy medium between the dark, thumping grooves of "Orblivion" and the often aimless (though sometimes beautiful) ambience of "Ultraworld", "Cydonia" is a beautiful cut of low-key electronica that usually hovers just on the edge of consciousness but sometimes ("Ghostdancing", "Hamlet of Kings", and especially the haunting -- yet strangely upbeat -- repeating arpeggios of "Terminus") shines forth as a little slice of electronic brilliance. "Terminus", in particular, is a wickedly addictive track that always seems to end about ten minutes too soon... but then that's why we have the "back" button, right?

    Nice one, Dr. Patterson.

5 out of 5 stars Bonus track on Import version.......2003-02-26

Another great album from Orb! Just wanted to mention that the UK import version has an extra track inserted at #12 (EDM) which (IMO) is easily worth the extra cost.

4 out of 5 stars Still Orb, yet not Orb.......2003-01-23

I can understand why some people didn't like this Orb album. At first, I didnt like it much either. But, I kept listening to it every now and then, because no CD should be judged just on one listen through. Gradually I came to like most of this album. I can safely say that the first 7 tracks, through "a mile long lump of lard", sound great. They flow together and have mixed sounds that combine for that same great Orb feel. Conversly, the last 5 or so tracks seem to be a lot worse, some even pointless. I still can't quite put my figner on what this album is supposed to be, but its still a quality buy for Orb fans. This one gets about an 83 percent...for now.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, as usual........2002-10-28

First off, I must let you know, dear reader, that the four years that passed between the Orb's last album and this album were not spent idly and without lots of other releases ... they're just not "albums" and after all to be taken seriously one must be judged by "albums" .

If you want your Orb to be stagnate, unchanging, and eventually boring and dated, this isn't the album for you. Stick with "2001: A Space Orbessey" which has plenty of those 15-minute-plus tracks you love so much. Or keep up with the DJ sets performed online, grab those and stick with those. If you'd gotten your way, the Orb would have been a joke by now.

If you like your Orb to change, just like you've changed as a person in the last 13 years, then this CD should keep you happy. As an entirely different direction for the Orb from previous albums, it's not an easy first listen, and there's no reason why it should be (Alex doesn't make music for you-individually-per-se). Put it on, relax, listen to it, and hit repeat on the remote when you get to the end so you can listen to it again. And *learn* it inside and out before you make up your mind whether you like it. And appreciate that each Orb release is different from the last one. Pretty soon you'll be clamoring for the next one, wondering what new direction *it's* going to take.

I heartily recommend the purchase of this exalted collection of music from the Elizabethan coronation ceremonies of 1953. The music represents an outstanding selection of the music of English christendom at the mid-20th Century. The performance quality of a variety of ensembles are commensurate with the quality of the selections themselves.

I purchased this CD at the Tower of London gift shop while on a trip to England a few years ago. This album is superb, with beautiful digital re-recordings of the music from Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. I have listened to it countless times. This wonderful music reminds me of the great heritage we in America share with Great Britain. Breathtaking, inspiring and uplifting, this album will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Ceremonies the World's Seen.......2002-01-14

The Coronation of HM Elizabeth II in June 1953 was one of the most spectacular public events the world has seen before or since. At the Queen's request, the Coronation was televised live on the BBC, the first coronation to receive such treatment. This is not a recording of the actual Coronation Service itself, but rather a recording, made in Westminster Abbey, of the actual music (with much of the same arrangements) that was used at the Coronation.

You will not be disappointed with this album!

5 out of 5 stars Grand and Glorious.......2001-08-15

This CD contains some of the most beautiful music ever written. The music performed at Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation was recorded in 1993 and released on CD. If you like high church music and you have an appreciation for what was probably one of the most spectacular public pageants of the 20th Century, you will love this CD.

This celebration of the British ambient-dance group's first 10 years is one for all electronic tastes. Whether you like your beats hard and fast or slow and gentle, U.F. Off has something for everyone, with each of the album's 12 compositions wrapped generously in the Orb's uniquely dubbed-out style. Orb aficionados will enjoy some new mixes of old favorites, such as "Little Fluffy Clouds" by LFC and "A Huge Ever Growing Brain..." by Orbital, while newcomers will be drawn by the timeless sunrise aura of "Blue Room" and "Pi (Part 1)." However, it is during the pulsating reggae throb of "Perpetual Dawn (Solar Youth Mix)" and the metronomic trance-floor classic "Assassin" that the Orb's richest identity shines. The first 15,000 copies come with a 12-song bonus disc containing further riches, rarities, and previously unreleased recordings. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars The Only Way to Start.......2005-08-26

For those of you who are Orb-curious, this a great place to start. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. More or less a singles compilation, with a few rarities, remixes and a live track as well. All the bases are covered. Techno, ambient house, hard electro, drum 'n' bass, dub reggae. It's all here. Kind of like a primer of 1990's style electronic music. Great for fans and completists also, because of the before mentioned rarities.
If you like this, I'd suggest the first album "the Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" as your next purchase; it's where it all started. If you like more ambient style music that doesn't bash you over the head with hard beats and endless repitition, give "Orbus Terrarum" a listen.

      3 out of 5 stars Greatest hits.......2004-05-15

This is your typical greatest hits album. It didn't show me anything wonderful or new, but it has a bunch of 7" edits, which are great for mix cds. I like "Evergrowing..." much more when it is a straight ambient track, like it is on the album, but the mix is cool too. "Mickey Mars" is cool too, and the "Towers of Dub" mix is great. The second disc is a collection of remixes and rare mixes and stuff, great but not a must have.

A Three star album because I think it would be better to go buy all their studio albums instead of just this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Orb.......2004-04-17

This is the best of The Orb. It is an essential collectible for fans new and old. Since purchasing this CD in 1999 I have collected most of the main Orb releases, including the classic (unfortunately deleted) full version of Blue Room. I still come back to this CD often.

Here The Orb offers up its best; mixed perfectly. The CD includes rare tracks such as Assassin, Huge Evergrowing Brain, Blue Room, and Perpetual Dawn. The unreleased (and underrated) track Mickey Mars is only available here. The hidden Oxbow Lakes remix, at the end of CD1, is excellent.

The double CD offers music unavailable elsewhere including a 1997 live version of Little Fluffy Clouds and the Mickey Mars Red X remix. There are also rare gems including the fantastic Soul Catchers remix of Asylum. Side two is mixed well and is presented symmetrically to the first CD and makes the collection nearly complete.

Older fans may want more. The "Chocolate Hills" remix of Assassin is trimmed down to a minute and a half from fourteen. The edits of Blue Room are good, but fail to catch the majesty of the original that sent the standard for Ambient House music. Still, this album is a good representation of the group's body of work up to 1997. If are new to the Orb fan this CD might be the place the start and finish with The Orb.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to The Orb.......2004-04-17

I love techno music. I have been a techno fanatic for some time now. It really irritates me when people who don't like techno music has to criticize the music and try to shove their music down other dance fans like myself. A reviewer here wrote that he didn't understand why people listened to this sort of music. Well I like it because I love listening to music that doesn't get played on the radio. I also love to dance to this sort of music. I will pass on Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton. That sort of music bores me to death.

Back in college I had a roommate who was even a bigger techno fan than I was. He helped shape my taste in music by unwittingly introducing me to Moby, Orbital, Leftfield and Delerium. Another techno act he exposed me to was The Orb. Their music was nothing that I haven't heard before. It was a good mixture of techno and reggae, especially on "Perpetual Dawn" (my personal favorite song by The Orb). I bought "U.F.Off: The Best of The Orb" to familiarize myself with their music. It was definitely different from Moby, Orbital, and Leftfield to say the very least. Another favorite song of mine by The Orb is "A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating..." which takes a sample from the old Minnie Ripperton song "Loving You". Good use of sampling as opposed to any song by Poofy (my nickname for the former Puffy/P.Diddy). All the songs on both disc one and two are cool. I more akin to the first disc though. For people who want to check out The Orb's music but never have, I strongly suggest checking out their best of cd. It is a good introduction.

4 out of 5 stars PI + 4:48 (Tr. 12) is THE reason for this comp........2003-05-29

A mix that covers -very lightly- a catalogue of tracks formented from the Land of OZ & beyond, it spectacularly hits the mark at 'PI'- Four minutes & Fourty-Eight seconds after the track fades, mind. It's a piano swimming through the ozone... or something. Whatever, it makes this compilation absolute.
