British hippies who started out emulating Jefferson Airplane, Fairport Convention escalated their homeland connections with each outing, culminating in this, their fourth album and a watershed for British folk-rock. Hindsight offers the ironic possibility that the Dylan covers of its predecessor, Unhalfbricking, opened a window onto the earlier Irish-English-Scots roots of the American music they loved, and Liege & Lief jumps through that window triumphantly. "Come All Ye" underscores their affinity for the Band yet is joyfully rooted in their own fertile folk traditions, echoed in a mix of classic songs from members Sandy Denny, Ashley Hutchings, and Richard Thompson, and given direct homage in the extended ballads "Matty Groves" and "Tam Lin," which evoke Neil Young & Crazy Horse in kilts. Fiddler Dave Swarbrick's arrival as a fulltime member adds new richness and a wonderful foil for Thompson's superb guitar leads. A medley of jigs and reels showcases their flair for hot-wiring traditional British Isles dances, a fixture ever since. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars A folk rock classic........2007-07-14

If nothing else, Liege and Lief is probably the definitive English folk-rock album. By combining traditional music with more modern sounds, the album takes on a timeless, intoxicating quality that draws immediate comparisons to groups such as The Band. The songs are warm, earthy, and inviting The rousing "Come All Ye" leads listeners into the album with irresistable flair- Richard Thompson's electric guitar and Dave Swarbrick's fiddle do a dazzling dance around one another, melding the traditional and the contemporary with effortless proficiency. But the real star of this song (and most of the album, really) is vocalist Sandy Denny, whose voice is simply one of the most evocative, sonorous, and outwright beautiful sounds ever concieved. She lends a kind of enchanting majesty to "Come All Ye," creating sounds that arc gracefully over the music, hypnotizing the listener within seconds. Once that stunning introduction is complete, the band launches into a few electrified renditions of traditional English folk songs: "Reynardine" is a strange, haunting, and tension-filled performance, in which the instrumentation is used to create dramatic bursts of pure sound rather than an actual melody, while Denny's voice flits and flutters to fill the gaps between notes. The result is an ominous, mysterious classic. The group also does an excellent instrumental medley, a joyful mixture of sounds that threatens to make you dance like a crazy person. "The Deserter" and "Tam Lin" are equally evocative, and just as expertly performed. The highlight of the album, however, is the group's epic reworking of the traditional "Matty Groves." It's an incredible performance, one that sees the group at its very best: Swarbrick and Thompson duel eachother with mounting intensity accross the song's eight minutes, while drummer Dave Mattacks lends the song a strutting, storming rhythm. Denny is simply amazing, narrating the story of the song's ill-fated title character with equal parts sympathy and sarcasm, letting her voice dart in, above, and under the melody, bending notes and stretching sounds, twisting and shaping every word with a kind of prodigious abandon. It's a resonant and irresistable sound, and it makes the song an absolute masterpiece. The Richard Thompson-penned "Farewell, Farewell" is the icing on the cake, a beautiful and mournful ballad with dreamy instrumentation, a gorgeous collection of sounds melting and blending into one another. Liege & Lief is an inescapably excellent album, a masterpiece that should belong to every fan of folk or rock.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Folk-Rock!.......2007-06-03

"Liege and Lief" was Fairport's first album that was almost entirely inspired by traditional British music. The band had previously released 3 albums during a relatively short period of time, and the repertoire had been a mixture of pop, rock and American and British folk.

In May 1969 after the recording of the previous album "Unhafbricking" the band had a terrible road accident which took the lives of drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeannie.

Other band-members were injured in the crash and the group were close to splitting up, but with their wounds healing up they eventually decided to continue with new members Dave Swarbrick and Dave Mattacks.

They did not want to perform their old material and needed a new direction and with inspiration from Ashley Hutchings and Sandy Denny they began digging into traditional Bristish folk music.

In a Hampshire farmhouse they began rehearsing material for a new album which eventually became "Liege and Lief".

The album inspired many other musicians to dig into traditional music and has now become a folk-rock classic and the album.

The original 8 tracks are all great and this new release features two bonus tracks recorded during the same sessions. "Sir Patrick Spence" was later recorded by the next Fairport line-up, here you have the opportunity to hear an early version with lead vocals by Sandy Denny singing slightly different lyrics. The arrangement may be less tight than the "Full House" version, but still a great addition to a timeless album. The other "new" track is a droning version of "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" which Sandy later recorded several times and released on her second solo-album.

Though most of the material is traditional, there are a couple of originals written by Richard Thompson; and they both stand out. "Crazy Man Michael" ( co-written by Swarbrick ) and "Farewell Farewell" were always favourites - "Farewell Farewell" sound much better than on the original vinyl album.

An often overlooked song, "The Deserter", was actually the song that got me into the band; a great tune beautifully sung by Sandy Denny.

4 out of 5 stars Here's what I hear.......2007-01-12

An album with a crucial sound for the time, and quite lovely. BUT: While Sandy Denny has a great voice, she tends to sound the same song to song. Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior, for example, is more distinctive and flexible. As well, the songs on LIEGE AND LIEF tend to be of a standard 4/4 rock beat, though the album is hailed as the premiere or seminal English folk-rock recording. That's wrong. Not enough variation, not enough flowing with the texures and beats of the traditional material they play. For those who hear this jewel but would like something more of the traditional folk spirit you detect, try BELOW THE SALT, by Steeleye Span. It's that band's best album and it subtracts about 40% of the rock element. Felt more by far is the influence Ashley Hutchings, founder of both bands.

5 out of 5 stars What a cool album!.......2006-11-30

This album is a great example of Fairport Convention making a characteristically British stamp on the emerging genre of folk-rock. It's comprised mainly of actual folk songs from the isles, but the band takes possession of each song and works it up into rocking, uptempo music that is unique compared with any American folk rock of the time.

The album opener, "Come All Ye," pretty much lays it out there, introducing the band members and telling the listener that the music is going to get you dancing (or at least swaying) and singing or humming. What follows are some really progressive folk songs that range from ballads, like the exciting "Matty Groves" (which, incidentally, rocks pretty hard at the ending instrumental section), the heavy riffing of "Tam Lin" (which must have been an influence on Jethro Tull), and the tragic "Crazy Man Michael," love songs like "Farewell, Farewell," and a great instrumental medley.

Musically, Sandy Denny's voice is great and the guitar work is a highlight. They manage to deftly combine acoustic instrumentation and more trippy electric instruments, yet still stay true to the British folk music and stories that underly it all. I'd recommend this to fans of Tull and Pentangle, but also to folk rock fans of bands like the Byrds and Dylan who are interested in stretching their horizons past American folk and blues to find rewarding folk from across the pond. Check it out, it's cheap!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect pairing with traditional ales!.......2006-11-01

For my money, "Liege and Lief" remains the best of the many recordings issued under the name Fairport Convention, a band which has experienced myriad shifts in personnel and sound over the band's broad span.

Several factors contributed to this excellence. One was the strong line up featuring no less than Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Dave Mattacks, Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol, and Dave Swarbrick--a group of folks that in one way or another established and perpetuated the English folk music revival that followed (and continues).

The music and times cannot be separated, for great music was being generated on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1969, and musicians were keen to do their best for the sake of creating music. Third, "Liege and Lief" was a unique rendering--partly wonderful folk, partly swashbuckling rock and roll--and as such the band was not imitating (consciously or not) other bands in this genre.

Finally, this music is a perfect pairing with traditional ales!

All musing aside, the opening notes of Come All Ye still stirs the soul and sounds strong and clear.

This title isn't just a joke. It makes the valid point that these Renaissance pieces occupied the same place in their culture as our pop music does in ours. People whistled these tunes in the street and danced to them at night, and you can easily accept the disc's title when hearing the Baltimore Consort's extremely lively performances, which have all the rhythmic drive and gusto of a good rock band. The ensemble's arrangements and the variety of its programming also contribute to the success of this disc, which would make an excellent introduction to music of the period. The booklet contains translations of all the vocal texts, and Dorian's sound leaps out of the loudspeakers with great clarity and presence. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars My favorite + audiophile recording.......2005-05-26

I've attended Baltimore Consort performances a number of times, and they are just about my favorite early music group. They do an outstanding job of making "old" music come alive. Sometimes early music recordings are dry and academic, and the Baltimore Consort is as far from that as you can get. Finally, they have a great since of humor, which often peaks through in their music.

They specialize in popular secular tunes of the age. Their playing is impeccable, and most of the group are accomplished soloists. La Rocque 'n' Roll is probably my favorite recording of theirs, the songs are fun, interesting, and involving. The best of the best...

The fact that the recording is technically very good is a nice bonus. As a matter of fact, "Jean de Nivelle" (track 26) is the first thing I play when evaluating speakers. It helps that I've heard the performance live (and unamplified), so I have a real life comparison. The recoding clearly captures the nuances of the individual instruments. Although obviously not as loud as modern rock, the recording still gives challenges speaker dynamics. Unlike some gee whiz audiophile recordings, I can listen to these songs again and again.

5 out of 5 stars absolute favorite .......2004-10-16

I've been collecting renaissance/medieval music for several years and have finally found something that sounds as though the musicians are actually having FUN with the repertoire. This is a blast, I recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff!.......2002-11-29

The jaunty, whimsical tone of this CD is set by the opening bars of the first piece, "J'ai vu le loup," which starts out with one of the musicians shouting "Un! Dieux!" Many parallels are subtly drawn between the secular music of Renaissance France and popular music of today. "The appeal of performing 'popular' repertory lies in the opportunity it provides for creative expression," explains the insert booklet. "All of the song and dance arrangements on this CD are the creation of the members of the Baltimore Consort, who sometimes only have an unharmonized melody to start with..." What they may lack in specific direction from the long-dead song writers, they more than make up for with catchy arrangements and spirited improvisations. Soprano Custer LaRue sings her sultry French lyrics with relish and gusto, and the addition of reedy crumhorns and bagpipes played by Chris Norman and Mark Cudek adds to the provincial French flavor. The fun of the music is echoed in the CD's amusing packaging: The album cover, somewhat reminiscent of the Beatles' "Abbey Road", features the ensemble members walking along in single file, with their viol and lute cases in hand. Other interior pictures of the group poke fun at other folk and rock imagery, including one shot of a gentleman in shades licking the neck of his bass viol. Not exactly the norm for early music releases, but refreshing for just that reason. Rocque on!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album.......2000-02-22

This is my favorite CD of all time. I've had it now for five years, I listen to it all the time, and I never get tired of it. Every track is enormously beautiful, from the bright and sunny tunes through the quieter and more melancholy ones.

This is a CD that sounds perfect in the early morning, late at night, or any other time of day.

I've become a huge fan of the Baltimore Consort (one of the highlights of my life was seeing the group perform the songs on this album live at Synod Hall in Pittsburgh, PA) and "La Rocque 'n' Roll" is their "Sgt. Pepper."

5 out of 5 stars If Led Zeppelin had been born 400 years earlier..........1999-10-02

...and played the lute, they would've played like Ron McFarlane, and sang like Custer LaRue. Wonderful performances of 16th C popular music on historical instruments, with lovely twists of rock'n'roll performance techniques. Check out the jazzy krummhorn glissandos, the sexy lute strumming, the straight-ahead power vocal, and the hip plucked bass viol -- especially on the last track. This is my #1 "Desert Island Disk."

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

1 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC!!! TERRIBLE RECORDING and PERFORMANCES!!!.......2004-09-02

This recording has been one of the greatest disappointments in my cd collector memory. Dutoit has NO idea about the proper style with which to play this music (music I have conducted in performance with professional orchestras) and the recording is an acoustical disaster.

Why did the engineers for this recording place microphones so close to the bandoneon (an accordion with buttons instead of keys, central to the performance of tango and Piazzolla's solo instrument) that one can hear every mechanical noise it makes -- even the valves opening and closing over the reeds??? Worse still, the orchestra sounds like the microphones were hung in one very soupy room and the musicians were recorded distantly. In essence the orchestra and the bandoneon do not sound in the proper sonic perspective -- much less in the same room!

The glissandos in the strings in the TANGAZO are wrong! They are way too slow and sloppy. Dutoit could have listened to any number of tango recordings and found the proper style. What a shame!

I can hardly wait for these engineers to do a recording of John Field's Nocturnes played on a celesta with REALLY close microphones so we can hear the inner clunky life of that instrument, as well!

5 out of 5 stars My search for Oblivion has a happy ending........2002-06-02

Recently, I attended a concert by a chamber orchestra on tour. The printed program for the concert was largely "standard fare." There were then two encores, one of which I knew had to have been the work of Astor Piazzolla, but a Piazzolla work I hadn't recalled ever hearing. (I can't claim to have a particularly large library of Piazzolla works, but the library had already included the more popular successes by the Kronos Quartet, Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma.) Summoning up my courage after the concert, I went backstage to ask one of the musicians what the Piazzolla encore was. The answer was "Oblivion" (and I was, fortunately, not embarrassed by having to ask who the composer was; the absence of the near-obligatory bandoneon in this chamber orchestra did not "throw me off-track").

Well, I just had to have a recording of "Oblivion" after hearing that encore. And an Amazon search led me to this superb recording by Charles Dutoit and the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, with "Oblivion" smack-dab in the middle of things (track 6 of 11); a centerpiece of sorts.

If there is a sadder, more wistful and languorous work than this brief piece, I have yet to hear it. (Some of the piano works of Eric Satie may come close, but they still miss by the proverbial mile.) "Oblivion" has a way of insinuating itself under your skin, and one wants to hear it again and again; I listened to it three times in succession before I played the entire CD. Scored (by Piazzolla) for strings, oboe solo and bandoneon obbligato, it is simply magical. And quite addictive.

While the attention paid to Piazzolla always seems to be in the context of his tangos, he was nonetheless a trained serious composer, studying with Alberto Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger. The Ginastera connection comes through in a few of the selections here, most obviously in the "Danza criolla" and somewhat less obviously in others (such as the third movement of "Tres movimientos tanguisticos porteños").

The most famous work here - "Adiós Nonino" - was written by Piazzolla in memory of his father. About the work, Piazzolla wrote, "Perhaps I was surrounded by angels. I was able to write the the finest tune I have written. I don't know if I will ever do better. I doubt it." It is a fine and beautiful work indeed, and his abilities as an orchestrator of no mean skill show through clearly.

The remainder of the works are equally fine, and at nearly 76 minutes, this CD can be considered a bargain. Perhaps (to me, at least) the best part of these selections is that all were orchestrated by Piazzolla and that Dutoit respects this integrity by not only playing them as Piazzolla had arranged them, but with a truly idiomatic feel for the style as well.

Back to that performance of "Oblivion" that it was my pleasure to hear. It was an arrangement for string orchestra, and as a result it was with neither oboe nor bandoneon. In that respect, it was "special," and I passed this thought on to the chamber orchestra "powers that be." Perhaps one day it will show up at these Amazon product pages. In the meantime...

If your knowledge of the tango is limited to the ballroom dancing variety, or to the "required element" in ice dancing, this delicious Piazzolla album may not be for you. But it is surely a required element for anyone who enjoys Piazzolla's music.

4 out of 5 stars Dutch Royal Wedding.......2002-02-04

On 02.02.2002 Dutch Royal Prince Willem-Alexander married his Argentinian Maxima. During the church ceremony they played Piazola's Adios Nonino which caused many sentimental tears.
Moreover a special choice while Maxima's father was not allowed to attend this royal wedding due to his participation on the Junta Regime.
( bye, bye pappa is the translation of Adios Nonino....)
Music which goes straight to heart.

    5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Borodin's orchestral works.......2006-09-01

Alexander Borodin was, of course, a chemist. And he only had a chance to compose in his spare time. Still, he was a fine symphonist. Others may remind us that Borodin was one of "The Five" great Russian nineteenth-century composers (Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Balakirev, and Cui). I prefer to think of Borodin as member of a more exalted group, namely the ten great nineteenth-century European symphonists (Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Berlioz, Borodin, and Berwald).

This CD has a fine selection of Borodin's works: his impressive second symphony, the well-known "In the Steppes of Central Asia," and orchestral excerpts from "Prince Igor," including the famous Polovtsian Dances. The works are very well performed, and I certainly recommend this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a good Borodin only CD.......2001-03-20

There are few Borodin-only CDs that contain these pieces. In fact, the only other one I know of, by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is only avaliable in Japan, and the recording has some severe defects (popping sounds in the 2nd symphony).

This CD is therefore quite a treat if you don't want Borodin and Mussorgsky, or Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov - just Borodin.

The Recording are all made before 1975, and most before 1965, so the quality may not be digital, but it is still pretty good, especially if you've got a good sound system - bad systems will ingratiate a small background hiss.

I love this CD and I hope that the... label won't keep you from buying it, these peices are not badly preformed by anomyunous orchestras and conductors, but by world-class ones.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Essential.......2004-07-31

Astor Piazzolla's canon is so vast and variegated that most of what he recorded can be said to be essential to the understanding of the man and his music. True connoisseurs of Piazzolla will want everything he did because every time he recorded an old work with a new group of musicians, the old work was given a new and usually wonderful sound. But for those who just want a representative sampling of his work, only a couple dozen CDs can be said to be truly essential. Hommage a Liege is one of those. Long out of print, the reissue of this important body of work brings rapturous joy to those who missed its initial release.
On this CD, Piazzolla had been invited to perform with Cuban master Leo Brouwer and famed Argentine guitarmeister Cacho Tirao at the International Guitar Festival of Liege. With the backing of the Liege Philharmonic Orchestra, the trio performed an outstanding rendition of Adios Nonino. Then they introduced Piazzolla's three part concierto Hommage a Liege which was written by him for the occasion. This is then followed by his four part Historia del Tango, which features some of the dreamiest music El Troesma has ever written. On this piece, the trio is joined by Guy Lukowski on guitar and by Mark Grawels, who offers a stunning performance on flute.
Historia del Tango is a grand project but is little known. Al DiMeola did a very worthy interpretation that is on his DiMeola Plays Piazzolla CD, but other than that recording it is difficult to find any artist who has even performed a piece of it.
I recommend Hommage a Liege to all Piazzolla fans. This is a performance that may be talked about centuries from now in music appreciation classes. Get it while it is still available.

4 out of 5 stars Classic US Power Metal.......2006-07-29

1987's Burn to My Touch was the second album from US power metal band Liege Lord. The band continued the uncompromising NWOBHM-worshipping power metal sound they started on Freedom's Rise, sounding very much like a cross between Helstar and Obsession. This is classic power metal like you could only find on Metal Blade in the mid 1980's.

Sadly, the band did not survive the 1990's, which was a notoriously difficult time to play this kind of music.

The Metal Blade reissue of Burn to My Touch may not have any bonus material, but does feature digitally remastered sound, which breathes new life into the classic album. This is a great power metal album, and should appeal to just about any power metal fan. Those of you who enjoy Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Jag Panzer, and Helstar should definitely find Liege Lord right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest/Underrated Metal LP of all time.......2002-08-02

This is arguably one of THE BEST METAL CDs or all time, which is why it's horribly rare...if you can find one, get one FAST because you're going to play it until it MELTS. Liege Lord are arguably the only GOOD thing to ever emerge from Connecticut besides FATES WARNING...and they're even BETTER than Fates Warning, although they never made it 'big' like that band. Guitars, Bass and Drums in Liege Lord are all very, very good (on this cd the production is a bit 'budget' but the talent still shines out), but the crowning glory of Liege Lord is vocalist Andy Michaud, whose operatic voice has apparently 6 octaves, soaring to incredible heights without ever 'screaming', the BEST metal vocalist I've ever heard, even outdoing Eric Adams of MANOWAR. All songs are thrash/power metal, very fast and all sound great except the lyrics are hard to track without a lyric sheet...Liege Lord got a different vocalist for 'Master Control', which is probably why it's they're last album. But BURN TO MY TOUCH is a must-have classic...K.K.

no metal blade collection is complete without this scalding slab of classic metal.

Heinrich Schütz published two volumes of Kleine geistliche Konzerte ("Little Sacred Concertos") during the 1630s. They're certainly small in scale compared to the lavish Psalm settings in the composer's Psalmen Davids; these "concertos" are mostly solos, duets, and trios, with no instruments but keyboard or lute. (The Thirty Years War wrecked the economy of central Europe, and the resources for grander church music weren't available--and neither, most likely, was the inclination to perform it.) Yet this is some of the sweetest, most tender music Schütz ever wrote. For example, the way in which the melodic lines in the duos and trios wrap themselves around each other, come apart briefly, and rejoin is magical; the solo tenor in "O misericordissime Jesu" adores the name of Jesus with as much passion as anything in Monteverdi. Weser-Renaissance, a German ensemble that deserves to be much better known, gives us all the Konzerte--on three discs for the price of two, no less--in exemplary performances with careful attention to the text that was so important to Schütz. The standard of singing is generally high, but sopranos Susanne Rydén and Nele Gramß have such beautifully pure tone and musical rapport that they're surely first among equals here. --Matthew Westphal

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quite an accomplishment.......2000-11-20

I bought this recording primarily for it's documentary value. Complete recordings of the Kleine geistiche Konzerte are not encountered every day, and despite knowing almost nothing of the performers, I looked forward to owning this three CD set. Much to my surprise, the performances were every bit as exciting as the recording feat is impressive. These are not sterile, academic readings but rather fully formed and moving performances of this exquisite music. The vocal style is occasionally more "modern" than one expects in early music, but I welcome the full-throated singing which is always attentive to the passion of the texts. An excellent example is the duet "Habe deine Lust an dem Herrn" by sopranos Susanne Ryden and Nele Gramss, which is one of the real highlights of this set. Alongside the many familiar favorites are many lesser known gems. Many thanks to Manfred Cordes and Wesen-Remaissance Bremen for 195+ minutes of pure pleasure.
