First Ten Years

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
She had the public persona of a saint, and a face and voice that captured all the idealism, innocence, and optimism of the '60s folk revival. She wasn't the movement's greatest talent, but her work helped shape all women balladeers who followed. Baez's best youthful work is here, including a host of Dylan songs: "Don't Think Twice," "Gates of Eden," "Farewell Angelina," and "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word," one of the best songs Dylan wrote but never recorded. Her version of Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" is her finest vocal interpretation, a political song that never ceases to move. --Roy Francis Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Vanessa.......2007-05-06

Vanessa Williams has long been one of my favorite singers and entertainers out there and this compilation is a great example why. Featuring the now-classic pop ballad "Save The Best For Last" and the Oscar-winning "Colors Of The Wind" (which is my personal favorite on the album), among other hits, the album is an absolute winner. As for Vanessa herself, you just can't help but be captivated by her sheer beauty and talent (currently co-starring on "Betty"), I simply adore this woman. After all the turmoil she had to go through in the beginning of her career, she just started from scratch all over again and she did it in such an honorable way. She's a true role model - for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection @}->---.......2006-02-11

I really like Vanessa Williams and over the years she has had a couple of big songs here and there. Some of the ones on this cd were never huge hits, but to her fans, we know them well. My personal favourites here are Betcha Never (a bit latin-ish and fun), Sweetest Days and Save The Best For Last. That song is now a bit of an anthem. She doesn't have the most powerful voice in the world, but it's pretty and her music is really beautiful. Maybe for fans only. I just wished she'd really come back with some new big hits.

3 out of 5 stars Some very good, some less so.......2005-09-22

This CD has three great songs: Love Is, Save the Best for last, and Dreamin'. The rest of the songs are just OK. This is why it just doesn't pay to buy CD's. I can't recommend purchasing the whole CD just for three songs.

2 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2005-08-18

I bought this CD in order to get a few of the "big hits," and that's what I got--no more, no less, as most of the other songs are just so-so.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!.......2005-08-10

I grew up during the 80s and I am a big fan, so I enjoyed each song in this CD

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CDs!.......2006-09-20

I love these two CDs included in this set. I was introduced to this by my father, who loves to listen to this music, too. He let me borrow the first CD for a day, and I kaifed(spelling is wrong, I know.....) it away from him the next week, and it has a permanent home in my room. It is one(Oh, all right, two,) of the best CDs I have ever listened to, making it in my top three with a Manhattan Transfer CD and a Maynard Ferguson CD.
Amazing songs, great for gift giving.

5 out of 5 stars One album I'll probably listen to forever.......2003-02-09

I believe I've played this CD, on average, once each week since I first came upon it in Spring, 1999. Atypically, each piece on the album is thoroughly enjoyable, and every one seems better than the one before it. Well represented are works by David Lantz and Paul Speer, and by David Arkenstone. Usually I skip around when playing a CD; this is my one and only exception. And everyone asks for repeats of "Behind the Waterfall".

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-played cd's.......2002-09-17

CD #1 in this double album has three or four pieces that I really enjoy--Tingstad & Rumbel's due, Friedmann's mysterious mermaid composition and of course the wonderful "Cristofori's Dream", which was a big hit CD on its own. I ended up getting the individual albums for Tingstad & Rumbel, because I enjoyed their particular sound so much.

At first, I didn't like CD #2 as well as CD #1, but now I listen to this almost as frequently. There are some Celtic-inspired pieces in particular that are very pleasant.

The great thing about these samplers for me is that I can find artists I am not familiar with, and also there is so much variety that I can play it over and over without getting bored.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to Narada.......2000-11-29

I do not personally own this CD but I did check it out a couple of times from the Houston Public Library (Central Library) which does own a copy. Generally very good, relaxing music. Narada's Celtic music selections in particular I have found to be NOT as good as Celtic collections by other labels...can't say why, exactly, though. Still, one thing that Narada artists excell at is acoustic guitar pieces (especially ¡Nuevo Flaminco! stuff). Unlike the other reviewer, I am generally fond of New Age electronic pieces, it's just that I've heard better elsewhere, particularly, as I said, in regards to New Age Celtic tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Best Buy and Superb.......2000-09-16

Two discs, chock full of the best stuff. These are long-running discs, no short-changing here. There are only two pieces I sometimes want to skip over, and they suffer only by comparison with the best collection I have seen.

This compilation covers the years 1977 to 1987, when Spyro Gyra was blazing new ground, blending jazz and pop elements in an original way that would eventually help define the emerging genre of smooth jazz. It touches on the band's Buffalo, New York, origins with "Shaker Song," recalls its first great success with "Morning Song," and documents the emergence of saxophonist Jay Beckenstein as an outstanding studio producer. Along the way, it also features the various musicians who have contributed to the group through the years. The original keyboard player Jeremy Wall contributes several compositions, including the touching "Autumn of Our Love" and the joyous "Summer Strut." There's an infectious humor to former bassist Kim Stone's "Bob Goes to the Store," while current member Julio Fernandez creates a fine setting for his own passionate guitar with "Del Corazon." Beckenstein's ability to work guest musicians into striking arrangements is apparent in Randy Brecker's trumpet with wah-wah pedal on "Catching the Sun," while bassist Eddie Gomez contributes distinctive energy to "Conversations." It's a stellar collection of tunes that will appeal to longtime fans and introduce the band's early career to recent devotees. --Adam Rains

3 out of 5 stars Nice Sampler -Not The 'Best'.......2003-06-16

This CD is an okay sampler, and a great overview of the first ten years of Spyro Gyra. I would recommend this disc if you plan on getting only one Spyro Gyra CD. However, many of their best songs from this era are not on this 'Best Of' CD. Their early albums are highly-recommended, making this compilation redundant.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be hooked................2003-04-10

If smooth jazz is your thing, if you love top-drawer musicians performing great charts, if improvisation rings your bell, you'll find it all here. Spyro Gyra has been on the cutting edge of jazz fusion for many years, and this is a sample of their best. "Morning Dance" is one of my all-time favorites, as is "Catching the Sun". Just get lost in the sweet sound of Jay Beckenstein's sax, or delight in Jeremy Wall's silky smooth keyboarding. This CD is a delight for all music fans, and a great way to be introduced to Spyro Gyra.

5 out of 5 stars If this CD is available in your local store, BUY IT!!!!!!!!!.......2001-07-11

From the beautiful artwork to the last note of Del Corazon, I was already becoming a Spyro Gyra addict. My favorite here would probably be "Conversations" due to its being "tight." The rest of the songs are no-less great. "Shaker Song", "Morning Dance", "Freetime", all of these are top-notch Jazz-Fusion/Smooth Jazz compositions. I'm new to this band but I know a good Fusion/Smooth Jazz band when I hear one. This CD is difinitely a keeper. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars "The MOTHER of all WINDHAM HILL SAMPLERS".......2001-10-15

Windham Hill put the "new" into "new age" music. Each year they publish a sampler which is a "greatest hits of the year" album, intended to introduce new and talented artists. On Windham Hill's tenth anniversary they published the finest 2-volume CD set they ever mastered, and this is it.

This is the first CD set that I have ever worn out - I am here on Amazon buying a replacement copy which will be MP3 mastered. I have played this CD monthly since 1994. I use the music to help calm my nerves as I do creative computer work, such as prepare university lecture notes or writing computer software.

Like any classic album, you _cannot_ get tired of this 2-volume set, since new tracks capture your imagination as time goes by. Many tracks are reminiscent of the "Enya Watermark" album or George Winston's "December". This CD is mostly guitar and piano music with no vocals, but several guitar tracks have a Celtic tone. This CD rates half a notch below Winston's "December", which is no criticism because "December" is the finest New-Age CD that has ever been mastered. Check reviews on EBay and buy "December" first, then buy this set second.

Out of about 30 songs, there are probably three that I could do without. Some of the tracks that I cannot live without are listed below.

Disc One
2- White Rain
3- Colors/Dance
7- Gymnopedie
12- Clockwork

Disc Two
3- Montana Half Light
7- Gwenlaise
12- To the Well

5 out of 5 stars 10 years of excellence.......2000-12-22

If you are looking for music to relax by, then you have come to the right place. These 2 discs contain some of the best accoustic music you'll find, whether it be solo guitar or piano, or small groups like Shadowfax. There are also some non-accoustic pieces as well though, which are equally beautiful. I was first introduced to Windham Hill when I received a cd of George Winstons. I loved it, and decided to explore other Windham Hill artists and bought this double album. And I was not disappointed. Each and every piece on here is sheer heaven. Spanning the years 1977 to 1987 the quality has remained consistent. For lovers of quality music, I can't recommend this enough!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Sampling of Windham Hill's Top Artists.......2000-02-15

It's Valentine's Day today and I thought I'd share my thoughts on what I consider to be one of the most romantic albums in my collection. This is some of the loveliest music you'll ever find. If you haven't already been introduced to the world of Windham Hill, this is definitely the place to start.

In the late seventies, I had become a huge fan of Leo Kottke and John Fahey and for a time I couldn't find any other artist to match their skills. Then I heard Will Ackerman being played in my favorite record store. I left that day with two of Ackerman's albums and one each by Alex de Grassi and Daniel Hecht and I was hooked. They are all excellent acoustic guitar players. In addition to the above named guitarists, you also get tracks by Robbie Basho and Michael Hedges.

CD-1 leads off with my all-time favorite Ackerman song, "The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter." The quality of the remaining tracks stays high throughout the rest of the CD. Most of the first CD is reserved for the guitar players on the Windham Hill roster, but you also hear pianists George Winston and Liz Story, the string band Montreux and Mark Isham.

CD-2 includes a wider diversity than the first disc and features the remainder of the early Windham Hill roster.

If your looking for a relaxing collection of music you can't go wrong with this. [Note: in 1996, Windham Hill released Sanctuary, a twenty year retrospective, which is excellent; but I prefer their first decade collection simply because of the heavy emphasis on the guitar players on their roster at the time.]

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

    5 out of 5 stars perfect!!.......2005-10-12

shawn has a wonderful ability to illustrate his words, and leaves you wondering whether the people in the songs exist in real life, or just in our imaginations. easy to sing along with, and nice to fall asleep to. i rarely dont have a shawn cd in my player, and this cd will be in there for a long time to come!

3 out of 5 stars Before he went & cut off his hair..........2003-11-06

Believe it or not, there was a time when Shawn Mullins was amazing! This disc is proof. Okay, the first 2 songs are horrid, poppy crap, but the rest are soulful Shawn at his best. It makes sense to just buy his older albums (particularly 'Eggshells,' because it's incredible), but this one is a nice collection of his work. As usual for Shawn in his long-haired (read: pre-Beneath the Velvet Sun) days, the lyrics on this album will sweep you away, paint vivid pictures in your mind, and inspire you to create & appreciate beauty. Just skip those first 2 tracks!

4 out of 5 stars More of Shawn.......2001-08-09

This compliation album proves why Shawn Mullins is such a tremendous artist. With 13 brilliantly written songs, "The First Ten Years" is a journey, and Mullins does not hestiate to expose himself more than ever. He shows us his fears, his experiences, his tears, and his happiness - this album traces the early days, and one can hear the evolution of his music as the years pass by.

I would reccomend this album only to those who are already familar with his music. (To those who do not recognize his voice, this album may seem scattered for it does not have one sound, for it traces the entire career of Shawn and his lyrics have changed and his perspectives are different). But to those who already love his music, this album is one of the best. One can hear all of the stages that he has gone through, and one can travel along with him as he endures through so much. It showcases his early days ("Evolution Man" and "This Time/Last Time") and stumbles through other periods ("Drumming Clown" and "Joshua"). His guitar and voice never fade while he keeps the audience involed with what he is experiencing as an artist, a lover, a human. A truly trained ear can hear and understand what has happened in the artists' career.

This album continues to showcase Mullins' voice - it is warm and embracing and soothing and comfortable. The richness in his voice has not faded with the years, and it has become more involved with his music. The reason I give this album four stars is because it fails to have only one sound, and that is because it is an album that traces his career. Other albums of his have one sound and one feeling ("Soul's Core" and "Eggshells"), but with this album, a listener can hear several different sounds. This is no reason, however, to not invest in the album.

I love all of his music, and I hope that more people would recognize his amazing ability to classify feelings/emotions. Go buy something of Shawn's - you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Back to his roots.......2001-05-29

I became a Shawn Mullins fan when I bought "Soul's Core" a couple of years ago. I liked "Soul's Core" so much that I later purchased "The First Ten Years" when it came out. I also bought "Beneath the Velvet Sun" as soon as it was released. On all of these albums, Shawn's talent as a consummate singer/songwriter is manifested.

Shawn Mullins' music consists of straight, honest lyrics and his trademark acoustic guitar, along with soaring melodies laced at times with his exquisite falsetto. The songs on this disc showcase his early work, representing a compilation of songs previously released on albums under his independent "SMG" label.

From the beginning, Shawn has been a musician who is more interested in art than in pleasing the masses. Although he achieved great success with "Soul's Core," (due mostly to one song, "Lullaby") this album is evidence that Shawn hasn't sold out to the recording industry. He has obviously maintained his emphasis on writing songs because they are good songs; he's not writing songs that are merely replicated sounds from the narrow confines of FM radio.

"The First Ten Years" is Shawn's way of telling the world that despite his huge commercial success, in his heart he is still a man and his guitar, and that is what matters most. Only a few songs on this disc have a "big band" sound ("Changes," "What is Life," and "Lately"), all of which are excellent. However, the main thrust of the songs here is acoustic, often consisting of Shawn and his guitar only, with the possible exception of other sparse instrumentation in the background.

One of my favorite songs ever is on this disc - it's called "Joshua," an acoustic toe-tapping story about a 10-year-old boy and his 65-year-old friend, Joshua, who play the guitar together. This song is a classic - one of Shawn's very best. It will make you laugh and cry.

One necessary note: if you are Mormon, you may find "Salt Lake City 1973" offensive.

In summary, I love this album. If you prefer Shawn's "big band" sound, you may be better buying one of his later albums first. If you like folk-like acoustic singer/songwriter music, you will enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth buying if you liked Souls' Core... but..........2000-07-01

the "but" is, that... eggshells, the album shawn recorded just before Soul's Core, is even better! So it makes more sense to, buy that instead and then think about Big Blue Sky and Better Days.

First Ten Years is still pretty good though!

4 out of 5 stars Great Folk Album.......2005-09-19

The Schooner Fare first 5 years is a great combination of original and classic tunes. Wonderful stuff!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing/Rousing Folk Music.......2003-01-04

I first saw Schooner Fare in Boston in early 1983 and was entirely blown away. I grew up with PP&M and the Kingston Trio, and knew the songs of the Clancy Brothers, and these guys sang to that folk place in my heart. The First Ten Years condenses their genius in one long-play CD, with sailing tunes, but also contemporary songs. "Seekers' Melody" and "16 Tons/Hit the Road Jack" are worth the very reasonable price of the album alone if you aren't a sea-chanty fan yet! Okay -- the bottom line -- this is one of the all-time classic sing-along-in-the-car and the heck with the folks around you! One of the best stick-in-your-head albums. Just buy it, you'll be happy!
PS: Unfortunately the band is no more, since Chuck Rowe met an untimely death this past winter. We'll miss ya, laddie!

4 out of 5 stars The First 10 Years - Live Schooner Fare.......2000-08-23

A great summary of the group's terrific stage presence, composed mostly of nautical-themed ballads and some traditional folk songs. These guys are great in concert, and best experienced live. If you want to have a reminder of a great concert experience, or perhaps a preview thereof, this is a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars First Ten Years.......2000-05-14

I have been a Schooner Fare fan for over 10 years. For those who remember the Kingston Trio and the like will really enjoy "the boys". Their songs are crisp and evoke memories of the salt air and seas of Maine and Nova Scotia. In concert they are fabulous performers. If you are not into sea shanties this album is not for you. But for those of you who have the sea in your blood you will really enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Rousing live performances at a bargain price.......2007-01-31

This rousing disc of great music sells for pennies at Amazon Marketplace, although I don't know if every seller is including the bonus DVD featuring Georg Solti in the William Tell Over. and the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra. Gergiev's contribution is inspired. There's no other way on records to hear his La Mer, so full of energy and (unusually for this work) outward emotion. The orchestra, a compilation of the world's select orchestras, sounds as fine as you'd expect.

I'm sorry for the snotty, back-handed reviewer here who finds the Mendelssohn too fast--it's not, being as lively and effervescent reading of the Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream as one could hope for. The excellence of Gergiev's Petrushka is a given. This particular live performance begins breathlessly fast, a far cry from Monteux's classic recording with the Boston Sym., and Gergiev conducts in broad outline quite often rather than emphasizing detail--this is propulsive music-making that doesn't try to be slow enough for ballet.

In all, an extremely generous CD/DVD pairing whose proceeds go to world peace. But even if they didn't, the cause of peace is beautifully served by the spirit of these concerts.

4 out of 5 stars They all hate poverty, war and injustice...........2006-10-16

I'm always a little leary of groups "for" or "against" the obvious. "Rockers against Drug Abuse." "Consortium for a Greener Earth", "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" (think about it...does anyone of conscience, regardless of his views on meat or fur, believe *he* treats animals *un*ethically?), etc. So the title, "World Orchestra for Peace" got my usual response at first: a roll of my eyes and the question, "So where is the World Orchestra for War?"

But the never-a-dull-moment Gergiev conducts them, or at least has the last couple times they've assembled themselves, and so I thought they deserved a listen.

The band consists of "bests" from orchestras from all over the world. (Sir Georg Solti wanted to put together a "United Nations of musicians", but it doesn't appear that they have difficulty following through, so those choosing the musicians must have sought a much higher quality than he was initially thinking). This you can definitely hear. There is a crispness and clarity in both the DVD and disc (ultimately, different sets of musicians) that one senses would not have been possible without such a degree of virtuosity.

I was pleased about Gergiev's selections on the disc. The Stravinsky highlights him in his element. But "La Mer", recorded at the 2000 Proms by the BBC, is gorgeous, the waves of the sea so clearly discernible in the ebb and flow of the orchestras crescendoes in "Jeux de vagues" I could see the foam atop them. The Mendelssohn seemed rushed, and I got the sense that giving this wild, physically dominating Ossetian a piece about magic and faeries was like loosing a bull in a china shop. To the same effect, I'm afraid.

The DVD is very pleasing, if only for bringing Sir Georg to life again. I know no one who can listen to Guillaume Tell with a straight face, so why they included that I'm not sure, but it is conducted and played flawlessly. As is Bartok.

There are other German selections (read: Wagner) that bring out Gergiev's strengths, if he is concerned about avoiding a Russian-only playlist for the next CD for this group.

Speaking of which, Decca might think of another title for the group AND CD, such as "World Orchestra: There Will Be Peace If You Buy Our CDs". Or, even better, "World Orchestra: There WON'T Be Peace UNLESS You Buy Our CDs."

      5 out of 5 stars A bargain for Peace.......2006-04-09

A DVD of Sir Georg conducting the first concert by the World Orchestra for Peace and a CD conducted by his designated successor, Valery Gergiev. Two for the price of one and wonderful performances by a dream orchestra, whose players sound as if they have been together for years (the players are not the same on the two discs). Solti starts off with a superbly exciting "William Tell Overture" and gives a wonderfully poetic interpretation of Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra". "La Mer" is the highlight of Gergiev's concert but "Petrushka" is vivid and exciting too.He is the only living conductor worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Solti. This was my personal "Record of the Year, 2005". Snap it up before it is deleted!
