She had the public persona of a saint, and a face and voice that captured all the idealism, innocence, and optimism of the '60s folk revival. She wasn't the movement's greatest talent, but her work helped shape all women balladeers who followed. Baez's best youthful work is here, including a host of Dylan songs: "Don't Think Twice," "Gates of Eden," "Farewell Angelina," and "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word," one of the best songs Dylan wrote but never recorded. Her version of Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" is her finest vocal interpretation, a political song that never ceases to move. --Roy Francis Kasten

One of my most-played cd's.......2002-09-17
At first, I didn't like CD #2 as well as CD #1, but now I listen to this almost as frequently. There are some Celtic-inspired pieces in particular that are very pleasant.
The great thing about these samplers for me is that I can find artists I am not familiar with, and also there is so much variety that I can play it over and over without getting bored.

This compilation covers the years 1977 to 1987, when Spyro Gyra was blazing new ground, blending jazz and pop elements in an original way that would eventually help define the emerging genre of smooth jazz. It touches on the band's Buffalo, New York, origins with "Shaker Song," recalls its first great success with "Morning Song," and documents the emergence of saxophonist Jay Beckenstein as an outstanding studio producer. Along the way, it also features the various musicians who have contributed to the group through the years. The original keyboard player Jeremy Wall contributes several compositions, including the touching "Autumn of Our Love" and the joyous "Summer Strut." There's an infectious humor to former bassist Kim Stone's "Bob Goes to the Store," while current member Julio Fernandez creates a fine setting for his own passionate guitar with "Del Corazon." Beckenstein's ability to work guest musicians into striking arrangements is apparent in Randy Brecker's trumpet with wah-wah pedal on "Catching the Sun," while bassist Eddie Gomez contributes distinctive energy to "Conversations." It's a stellar collection of tunes that will appeal to longtime fans and introduce the band's early career to recent devotees. --Adam RainsCustomer Reviews:

"The MOTHER of all WINDHAM HILL SAMPLERS".......2001-10-15
This is the first CD set that I have ever worn out - I am here on Amazon buying a replacement copy which will be MP3 mastered. I have played this CD monthly since 1994. I use the music to help calm my nerves as I do creative computer work, such as prepare university lecture notes or writing computer software.
Like any classic album, you _cannot_ get tired of this 2-volume set, since new tracks capture your imagination as time goes by. Many tracks are reminiscent of the "Enya Watermark" album or George Winston's "December". This CD is mostly guitar and piano music with no vocals, but several guitar tracks have a Celtic tone. This CD rates half a notch below Winston's "December", which is no criticism because "December" is the finest New-Age CD that has ever been mastered. Check reviews on EBay and buy "December" first, then buy this set second.
Out of about 30 songs, there are probably three that I could do without. Some of the tracks that I cannot live without are listed below.
Disc One
2- White Rain
3- Colors/Dance
7- Gymnopedie
12- Clockwork
Disc Two
3- Montana Half Light
7- Gwenlaise
12- To the Well

A Superb Sampling of Windham Hill's Top Artists.......2000-02-15
In the late seventies, I had become a huge fan of Leo Kottke and John Fahey and for a time I couldn't find any other artist to match their skills. Then I heard Will Ackerman being played in my favorite record store. I left that day with two of Ackerman's albums and one each by Alex de Grassi and Daniel Hecht and I was hooked. They are all excellent acoustic guitar players. In addition to the above named guitarists, you also get tracks by Robbie Basho and Michael Hedges.
CD-1 leads off with my all-time favorite Ackerman song, "The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter." The quality of the remaining tracks stays high throughout the rest of the CD. Most of the first CD is reserved for the guitar players on the Windham Hill roster, but you also hear pianists George Winston and Liz Story, the string band Montreux and Mark Isham.
CD-2 includes a wider diversity than the first disc and features the remainder of the early Windham Hill roster.
If your looking for a relaxing collection of music you can't go wrong with this. [Note: in 1996, Windham Hill released Sanctuary, a twenty year retrospective, which is excellent; but I prefer their first decade collection simply because of the heavy emphasis on the guitar players on their roster at the time.]

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

More of Shawn.......2001-08-09
I would reccomend this album only to those who are already familar with his music. (To those who do not recognize his voice, this album may seem scattered for it does not have one sound, for it traces the entire career of Shawn and his lyrics have changed and his perspectives are different). But to those who already love his music, this album is one of the best. One can hear all of the stages that he has gone through, and one can travel along with him as he endures through so much. It showcases his early days ("Evolution Man" and "This Time/Last Time") and stumbles through other periods ("Drumming Clown" and "Joshua"). His guitar and voice never fade while he keeps the audience involed with what he is experiencing as an artist, a lover, a human. A truly trained ear can hear and understand what has happened in the artists' career.
This album continues to showcase Mullins' voice - it is warm and embracing and soothing and comfortable. The richness in his voice has not faded with the years, and it has become more involved with his music. The reason I give this album four stars is because it fails to have only one sound, and that is because it is an album that traces his career. Other albums of his have one sound and one feeling ("Soul's Core" and "Eggshells"), but with this album, a listener can hear several different sounds. This is no reason, however, to not invest in the album.
I love all of his music, and I hope that more people would recognize his amazing ability to classify feelings/emotions. Go buy something of Shawn's - you will not regret it.
Back to his roots.......2001-05-29
Shawn Mullins' music consists of straight, honest lyrics and his trademark acoustic guitar, along with soaring melodies laced at times with his exquisite falsetto. The songs on this disc showcase his early work, representing a compilation of songs previously released on albums under his independent "SMG" label.
From the beginning, Shawn has been a musician who is more interested in art than in pleasing the masses. Although he achieved great success with "Soul's Core," (due mostly to one song, "Lullaby") this album is evidence that Shawn hasn't sold out to the recording industry. He has obviously maintained his emphasis on writing songs because they are good songs; he's not writing songs that are merely replicated sounds from the narrow confines of FM radio.
"The First Ten Years" is Shawn's way of telling the world that despite his huge commercial success, in his heart he is still a man and his guitar, and that is what matters most. Only a few songs on this disc have a "big band" sound ("Changes," "What is Life," and "Lately"), all of which are excellent. However, the main thrust of the songs here is acoustic, often consisting of Shawn and his guitar only, with the possible exception of other sparse instrumentation in the background.
One of my favorite songs ever is on this disc - it's called "Joshua," an acoustic toe-tapping story about a 10-year-old boy and his 65-year-old friend, Joshua, who play the guitar together. This song is a classic - one of Shawn's very best. It will make you laugh and cry.
One necessary note: if you are Mormon, you may find "Salt Lake City 1973" offensive.
In summary, I love this album. If you prefer Shawn's "big band" sound, you may be better buying one of his later albums first. If you like folk-like acoustic singer/songwriter music, you will enjoy this album.
Well worth buying if you liked Souls' Core... but..........2000-07-01
First Ten Years is still pretty good though!

Rousing live performances at a bargain price.......2007-01-31
I'm sorry for the snotty, back-handed reviewer here who finds the Mendelssohn too fast--it's not, being as lively and effervescent reading of the Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream as one could hope for. The excellence of Gergiev's Petrushka is a given. This particular live performance begins breathlessly fast, a far cry from Monteux's classic recording with the Boston Sym., and Gergiev conducts in broad outline quite often rather than emphasizing detail--this is propulsive music-making that doesn't try to be slow enough for ballet.
In all, an extremely generous CD/DVD pairing whose proceeds go to world peace. But even if they didn't, the cause of peace is beautifully served by the spirit of these concerts.
They all hate poverty, war and injustice...........2006-10-16
But the never-a-dull-moment Gergiev conducts them, or at least has the last couple times they've assembled themselves, and so I thought they deserved a listen.
The band consists of "bests" from orchestras from all over the world. (Sir Georg Solti wanted to put together a "United Nations of musicians", but it doesn't appear that they have difficulty following through, so those choosing the musicians must have sought a much higher quality than he was initially thinking). This you can definitely hear. There is a crispness and clarity in both the DVD and disc (ultimately, different sets of musicians) that one senses would not have been possible without such a degree of virtuosity.
I was pleased about Gergiev's selections on the disc. The Stravinsky highlights him in his element. But "La Mer", recorded at the 2000 Proms by the BBC, is gorgeous, the waves of the sea so clearly discernible in the ebb and flow of the orchestras crescendoes in "Jeux de vagues" I could see the foam atop them. The Mendelssohn seemed rushed, and I got the sense that giving this wild, physically dominating Ossetian a piece about magic and faeries was like loosing a bull in a china shop. To the same effect, I'm afraid.
The DVD is very pleasing, if only for bringing Sir Georg to life again. I know no one who can listen to Guillaume Tell with a straight face, so why they included that I'm not sure, but it is conducted and played flawlessly. As is Bartok.
There are other German selections (read: Wagner) that bring out Gergiev's strengths, if he is concerned about avoiding a Russian-only playlist for the next CD for this group.
Speaking of which, Decca might think of another title for the group AND CD, such as "World Orchestra: There Will Be Peace If You Buy Our CDs". Or, even better, "World Orchestra: There WON'T Be Peace UNLESS You Buy Our CDs."
A bargain for Peace.......2006-04-09
