Angel is Violeta Parras son. He grew up with Violeta's music. He belongs to the chilean New Song movement. He was exiled in France during the time of the military goverment where he lives up to now.

Angel Parra adds so much to his music. You can hear his belief in the songs. Others have said so much about him, but you really must hear the passion if you haven't already. This collection allows one to hear it.

Angel Parra and Chilean Music.......2001-10-21

Angel Parra is the second generation of an incredible family of musicians and poets in Chile. His mother, Violeta Parra, is known and loved all over South America. Joan Baez often sings one of her most famous songs, Gracias a la Vida. Angel is a worthy successor to his mother and the four songs of hers on this CD are well chosen.
After their mother died in the middle 1960's, Angel and Isabel, his sister, opened up the Pena de los Parra, a wonderful place dedicated to Chilean folk music until it was closed in 1973. Angel was arrested and imprisoned. He was only allowed to come back to Chile 15 years later in 1987.
But you don't need to care about Chilean history to appreciate Angel's music. He can sing anything from romantic boleros to biting satire and social commentary. His voice is deep and smokey.
This CD is a good selection of the Parra's music. It has some of Angel's classics from the period of the Allende government, like Cuando Amanece el Dia (When Day Breaks) as well as love songs and humorous songs of his own and Violeta's.
If you are at all interersted in South Americna folk music, this CD is an essential.

Este disco es una presentación en vivo, grabado el 6 de mayo de 1989, en el teatro Teletón, en Santiago de Chile. Recital de mucho sentimiento, pues a Angel se le permitia regresar a interpretar su música a Chile. Un fin de la prohibición. Angel fue un sobreviviente de la Nueva Canción Chilena, sobreviviente de campos de concentración en Chile, y un sobreviviente a su destino, que lo ha marcado con muchisimas creaciones y muchas canciones, muchisimas canciones... es un regalo de abundacia, de un compañero de senda de Víctor Jara, Rolando Alarcón y Osvaldo "Gitano" Rodriguez, sombras que quedaron atrás en el recuerdo, en la canción hecha memoria. Angel sigue adelante con muchos proyectos... es su acento, el no parar y aquí se presenta una gran antología, cantando junto a su hijo angelito y otros musicos chilenos.
