Album Description

New Orleans Christmas captures the unique and vibrant voice of this city with a collection of holiday favorites decked in the blues, jazz and swing flavors the Crescent City is famous for.

The album opens with a familiar favorite as Big Al Carson and Academy Award-winning Lars Edegran put a big band twist on Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Home-town favorite James Andrews summons up the spirit of New Orleans Christmas past, as the gravelly tones of his voice and trumpet evoke the raspy vocals of the great Louis Armstrong on Christmas in New Orleans. Other tunes get new twists as a bevy of notable musicians put their signature touches on the holiday classics: Ellis Marsalis tickles the ivories to bring new life into God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, while the internationally-known John Boutte dreams for snow to fall on the usually-warm city of his birth on his version of White Christmas, recording especially for this collection. Trumpeter and bandleader Gregg Stafford leads the Heritage Hall Jazz Band on their respectful and understated treatment of Silver Bells.

Not to be forgotten, the new school of New Orleans music is also helping to get the jingle bells rockin'. The New Birth Brass Band gets the big guy dancing on Santa's Second Line, while Ingrid Lucia, a recent settler in the New Orleans area, teases the chords and the man in red on the playful Zat You, Santa Claus? Papa Don Vappie, The Dukes of Dixieland, Banu Gibson, and Topsy Chapman round out this musical feast of holiday proportions.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of New Orleans Christmas will be donated to New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity in support of their Musicians Village Project.

5 out of 5 stars Time to introduce a new tradional music to your Christmas.......2007-01-19

This is a collection that is long overdue. "Christmas in New Orleans" literally flew out the door of my local bookstore when they put it on a demo this last December. This is a very positive and jazzy CD that is essential for people who enjoy celebrating Christmas from a variety of traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Great, fun New Orleans music........2007-01-18

I gave this CD to my Texas friends before Christmas. They loved listening to it. One friend said that she even sat in the car listening for a while until the CD was over. It's very energetic and happy music.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas with a Beat.......2007-01-18

This cd exemplifies the wonderful music of New Orleans with a seasonal twist. It had us tapping our toes and smiling!! It's a great addition to our holiday collection.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, not exciting.......2007-01-15

Carols in genuine New Orleans style. Nice selection of songs, giving representative variety to the collection. Performances are not inspired, but average or somewhat better--"workmanlike" might be the best description. I'm glad I added this collection to my small eclectic group of Christmas CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing Home the True Meaning of Christmas.......2007-01-10

The music is both raucus, haunting and enchanting. The New Orleans jazz arrangements are full of energy and just make you want to tap your feet. However, having recently spent 10 days in New Orleans the joy of the music in this album is tempered by the reality that a great deal of the city outside the tourist areas is still a sea of storm debris, empty boarded up homes and businesses, and vacant lots. As I listened to the heart and soul in the music I couldn't help but remember how the heart and soul appears to have been ripped from so much of the city. The music also transported me to a previous visit when Christmas in New Orleans was a joyous time and the Christmas holiday served as a run up to Mardi Gras with the first hints of the riotousness of the coming New Year. It's a great change of pace for a Christmas album.

Putumayo's first holiday collection, A Putumayo World Christmas, reminded us that the vast majority of people who celebrate the Nativity are more likely to have an incipient sunburn nipping at their noses than Jack Frost. Over the centuries, warm-weather cultures have developed a variety of lovely and highly individual holiday traditions. But musicians from Central and South America and the Caribbean also draw upon our shared European and post-colonial heritage, thus gracing familiar carols and seasonal pop songs with an enchanting tropical spin. Cha-chas, rumbas, and steel bands rock the house from Advent to El Dio de los Reyes (Festival of the Three Wise Men, or Epiphany) in countries where religious devotion often includes a cooking rhythm section and dancing goes to church. The set list includes a quartet of charming North American tracks, but the mood is predominantly south-of-the-border: festive, serene, exalted, danceable, and very beautiful. --Christina Roden

3 out of 5 stars Christmas Around the World.......2007-01-17

This CD is excellent, except four of the cuts are from the previous CD A Putumayo World. If you have that one, I don't recommend this title.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-05

This is a really fun CD! Really good music
and fun.

4 out of 5 stars Watch out! If you already have Putumayo World Christmas..........2003-12-15

If you already have Putumayo World Christmas, four of the 12 songs on this album are duplicates from that album. I don't understand why they released another Christmas album while the other one was still available if they weren't going to put all new songs on it.

That said, this is a great album. It's a ton of fun to hear songs from around the world about Christmas and a really good variety of songs from different areas.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas album.......2006-09-10

Putumayo is still making Christmas (NOT 'holiday' or 'winter') albums;they will be releasing a New Orleans-themed one this year.

This is a wonderful Christmas album, very peaceful and comforting.Among the highlights are the whimsical 'Soca Santa',the nuevo flamenco of Ottmar Liebert, the Celtic Loreena McKennitt, blues from Otis Redding, and Mason Williams' "Virgin Mary."This is a fun album, perfect for the season!

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas CD with blends of various styles of music........1998-12-23

This is an excellent compilation of Christmas songs selected from a blend of various types of music that definitely accomplishes the Putumayo mission. That being to join the traditional with contemporary to create products which people love. The cover also indicates that portions of the proceeds go to help homeless children.

Most nations that celebrate Christmas have never seen a snowstorm and their tropical climates would give a Eurocentric Santa Claus galloping prickly heat. The merriment of the season is universal, but each group observes the nativity in a manner that has relevance to their culture and environment. Most of the selections on this CD were gathered from warm-weather areas, with a few token Northerners tossed in. Old favorites appear in new guises; "We Three Kings" is given a chugging Cajun treatment by Michael Doucet, and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is warmed up by a steel drum orchestra. Carols turn up in a variety of forms, but there are also toasts to the past and coming year, appeals for national pride and unity, and greetings to friends and family. The detailed liner notes complement and embellish the experience. This educational garland of holiday songs will make an ideal stocking stuffer and enliven any holiday gathering. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Silent Night, Mellow Night.......2000-12-16

While I enjoyed this, I also felt that (1) it seemed likely to be more fully appreciated by a fan of world music than a novice; and (2) for world music, it seemed pretty subdued overall. First, only 3 of the 11 pieces will likely be familiar to many American listeners. Some of the songs are traditional holiday songs in their cultures--one of these is the lovely "Nadal de Luintra," from Galicia, Spain, where the language is a version of Portuguese and the culture is Celtic (!). Other songs are original compositions, like Ivan Lins' "Noite para Festejar." While wonderfully Brazilian, this song might as well be an homage to Yemaya as to Papae Noel. Another _World Christmas_ from 1996 (the compilation benefits Special Olympics and features Cesaria Evora, Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, the Gipsy Kings, Ruben Blades, Dianne Reeves, & others) has almost the reverse proportion of familiar to unfamiliar holiday songs, and would likely appeal more to a world music novice. Also, with its Latin & Afropop rhythms, that compilation was much more lively overall than this one. This one does have a thumping Cajun piece from Michel Doucet, but other pieces are very soothing. Even one of the Latin pieces on this one, the vallenato "Diciembre" from Colombia, seemed very gentle. The steel drums seemed very plodding (compare with their use on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" on the other compilation). The Hawaiian instrumental was lovely and very, *very* mellow. The choices are interesting, too: there are *2* from Galicia, but nothing from Africa (unless you count the diaspora cultures of Jamaica, Barbados, & Brazil). Maybe on Putumayo's next holiday release, we'll hear more from Africa. (Why not Asia, as well? True, much of Asia does not observe the holiday, but most Filipinos and some Koreans do). Putumayo's liner notes are excellent and are an aid in appreciating the music. I am looking forward to a sequel!

4 out of 5 stars A really rich collection of seasonal favorites.......2000-11-11

You'll get a really wide range of music on this CD from quiet tunes from the Night Heron Orchestra to Michael Doucet (of Beausoleil) doing a cajon-infuenced romp. All-in-all it is an interesting collection, but the difference in the tunes makes it feel a bit fragmented. However, if you don't already have a copy of John Gorka's Christmas Bells, then that song alone is worth the price of the CD. Also, a great party CD.
