This CD is awesome - I first listened to it in the early 70's in England and have wanted it ever since - it has probably some instrumental Scottish folk influence (I am somewhat of a novice at this) and somewhat the flavor of Pink Floyd - couldn't get it for many years because it was out of print and living in the US meant that people had never even heard of it -

La primera vez que escuché a Third Ear Band fue en esa recopilación del sello Harverst "Picnic". Desde ese momento las cosas se le pueden complicar a cualquier amante-melómano del rock progresivo ¡¿Dónde ponemos esto?!
Sweeney, un percusionista que usa ritmos simples y tribales, acompañado de un grupo de cuerdas (en especial recomiendo prestar atención al trabajo de las violas) puede hipnotizar con sus temas que van desde lo clásico y cerebral a lo arqueológico y espiritual. Esta producción es para mí una gran alegría, pues no quería gastar más de la cuenta con el disco "Elements" (sólo cuatro temas de corta duración, que bien podría venderse a un precio más cómodo); todo mejora si se le incluye "Alchemy", una joya de pretensión artística, nada, nada cercano al rock, pero de temperamento ilimitado. Dos obras plenas en una que cualquier audiófilo y coleccionista de alto conocimiento debe tener. Por supuesto que no hay nada mejor que los vinilos de esta banda (los artes gráficos son fantásticos), pero los precios podrían complicar otras necesidades.

Harvest Box Set: A Fantastic Overview.......1999-08-08

Anyone looking to explore the early years of progressive music need look no farther then this fine 5CD box set. Representing the years 1969-1976 this set is one of the most well put together sets attempted by a major label to put into perspective it's own history. Housed in an oversized book format, the 120 page booklet enclosed features many rare photos of the Harvest rouster as well as an extensive overview. The music inside speaks for itself with many fine moments from Kevin Ayers, Roy Harper, Sid Barrett,Barclay James Harvest, Pete Brown, ELO, The Pretty Things, Deep Purple,Babe Ruth, Gryphon and many more. Highly recomended for all those interested in the formative years of progressive music and it's evolving influance on future music, popular and otherwise.

Third Ear Band - 'Hymn To The Sphynx' (Mooncrest) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-08-31

Gave it a 4 1/2 star rating,on part of the low price,for a 2-CD import-that is. Disc one is made up of studio cuts,from 1990 and 1970. The music is very well written and perfomed I thought. Best described as 'progressive art rock'. Disc two is SUPERB! It's from a 1991 reunion show,apparently. Most memorable tunes were the lengthy "Sun Ra Raga" followed by "Third Ear Raga" (running over fourteen minutes each) and the inventive "Pyramid Song". I think I like this release more so than I do their self-titled effort and 'MacBeth' (see my reviews of both). A must-have.

Medieval Space-Folk Witchery.......2006-05-26

What can be said about a band that is mentioned in the infamous "Nurse With Wound List", is cited as an influence by Hans Jochim Roedelius, scored Roman Polanski's Macbeth and shared a violinist with Hawkwind, High Tide and David Bowie?

Very little it seems, since very little has ever been said or written about this band. Equally parts pastoral and spacey, archaic and futurist, tranquil and frightening.

This cd consists of three rare albums collected on two discs. One studio and one live from 1990 and the "Abelard and Heloise" BBC production soundtrack from 1970. The recent recordings are equal in quality to the vintage. This usually sells for the price of one album.

Will appeal to fans of: Amon Duul, Brian Eno, Dead Can Dance, Comus, Ash Ra Tempel, David Sylvian, (K)Cluster, Nurse With Wound, Michael Rother, Sun Ra and anything on the 4AD or ECM labels.

Originally released in 1970,even though it's self-titled,this disc is often refered to as the 'Elements' lp.This was the band's second album.Four tracks,each has an average running time of nine minutes.Totally instrumental,would be best described as experimental psychedelia.Definitely a certain taste is required to thouroughly enjoy this reissue."Earth" is notably the CD's best cut as I'm almost certain that I hear a cello,violin,hand drum,flute and a bagpipe."Fire" sounds like somewhat of an open jam,somewhere in the middle east."Water" could easily serve as a film soundtrack,even today.Certain fans of experimental just MAY find themselves drooling over this record.

I'd give it a 3 1/2 star rating.'Music For Macbeth' was originally released in 1972 in order to be the soundtrack for director Roman Polanski's film 'Macbeth'.It was the band's third lp.Word has it the movie is considered to be quite strange as so is this CD,that is IF you fail to understand it.What I am able to perhaps make out about 'Music...' is that the Third Ear Band was trying their hand at creating a piece of memorable 'experimental progressive' that would hopefully be remembered as a most obscure album in the years to come.In my humble opinion,that mission was completed.TEB was very obscure and practically unknown in the states,but more successful in the UK.No surprise there.A total of sixteen songs and I notice that most of them are short in length.I happen to like their self-titled lp(often refered to as the 'Elements' lp) better,maybe that's because violinist Simon House plays on the album.Believe it or not,Third Ear Band has been back together for awhile now and is STILL active.

unique score to Polanski's Shakespeare adaptation.......2002-01-04

Director Roman Polanski worked closely with the British psychedelic trance-rock outfit Third Ear Band (obscure in the states but more widely appreciated in the U.K.) to produce the music for his film of Shakespeare's "Macbeth". This is the only music of Third Ear Band that I've heard, but it certainly makes an excellent score for Polanski's vivid (and often lurid) visuals, and perfectly compliments the director's treatment of his subject matter as a horror film. Often unbearably creepy, this music may remind some of Pink Floyd or King Crimson, and is a definite addition to my music collection. Third Ear Band are still together today, and continue to tour and produce music. Now, if Amazon would just come through with that ERASERHEAD DVD...

Decent later day Third Ear Band release. Best tracks here are "Behind The Pyramid", the out-there ten-minute "Water Into Wine" and "Prophecies". Seems to be a different line-up here than on their other titles - Glen Sweeney-percussion, Mick Carter-guitar, Jim Hayes-vocalist and Brian Diprose-bass. It's been said that if you like Gong's 'Angel Egg' lp, you should dig this effort. It's still raga rock, as only Third Ear Band can play it. Some might tag it as 'new age'.
