realmente los 60 fueron una caldera inagotable de sensaciones, estilos,excesos, propuestas... que dificilmente puedan tener parangon...he aqui una muestra muy valiosa de esa confusa y hermosa realidad..gospel, funk, rock, psicodelia....versiones como "in the midnight hour","people get ready" te vuelan la cabeza.....muy buen disco, ademas tiene esa joya perenne como "time has come today"..que mas queres??

One of the First albums too talk about the Homeless. One of the first R&B/Gospel groups too cross over to the Rock genre. The Chambers Brothers are one of the Icons of the early Rock Movement. Two songs (The Time Has Come Today & People Get Ready), are must haves for Any Fan of early Rock.

Psychedelic Perfection.......2006-10-13

"Time Has Come Today" is one of the best psychedelic rock recordings ever produced and is a "must have" for any 60's rock aficionado. I heard it for the first time in 1968 on WABX FM in Detroit. I had a 10th grade Enlish teacher who would let us listen to the radio in class while doing our writing assignments. "Time" was one of the songs on the free form ABX playlist that got me hooked on rock and blues. Get this album!!!

You simply cannot talk 60's psychedelia and not mention The Chambers Brothers! Their harmonizing and far-out sound (blending many musical elements to create their own unique sound) make this album a treasure.

I, too, have this primarily because of the full eleven minute version of "Time Has Come Today" but I love the majority of the album, most especially "So Tired" (second fave on this album) as well as "Dinah" (an extra track on the cd that was not part of the album).

This goes hand in hand with Iron Butterfly's seventeen minute epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." Put those two cuts along with Grand Funk Railroad's "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home," The Steve Miller Band's "Space Encounter/Fly Like An Eagle," Neil Young's "Cowgirl In the Sand," Eric Burdon and The Animals' "Sky Pilot" and anything else you can squeeze in (considering those tracks' combined running time will go over the time limit of a standard 74 minute disc) onto one CD and fly away! - Donna Di Giacomo

This 40th anniversary box set, lavishly illustrated and exhaustively annotated, features the best of their album tracks, singles and b-sides. All newly re-mastered, achieving the best sound to date - alongside no less than 30 previously unreleased live, broadcast and studio tracks. Among these lost gems are: their very first recording session from 1967; outtakes from The Pentangle (1968) and Reflection (1971); three 1968 BBC radio session tracks newly in stereo; live concert and television tracks spanning 1968- 73; and rare film soundtrack contributions.

Back in '89 I was a budding garage guitarist. A sophisticated uncle took me up to Vancouver BC for the International Folk Music Festival where I saw this band that literally changed the way I look at rock music. I was 17 years old and The Pentangle blew me away. I have since learned many reasons to appreciate this quintet--most especially the original line-up. As for this collection of their music? Disc one and two make for an interesting "Greatest Hits" style selection. Some of my favorites are missing and the work from Bert and John's solo albums could have been replaced by some more team efforts but still...not a bad selection. Disc three offers nothing truly new. It is the concert from Sweet Child, including the unearthed tracks released not long ago with the reissue, resequenced to resemble the original concert. Enjoyable but not ground breaking. Disc four, however, is worth the price alone. These are amazing live tracks. Most come from television appearances. The sound is listenable for the era and the performances inspired. These are not BBC "In The Studio" recordings...this is true live with an audience and the band goes for it. I would recommend this for any fan.

A Great Wee Folk-Jazz Band.......2007-06-08

It's time that a good, multi-disc compilation came out on Pentangle. The band brought together great musicians [Bert Jansch, John Renborn, Danny Thompson, Jacqui McPhee, Terry Cox} to create something much greater than the sum of the parts. The excellent rhythm section of Thompson and Cox providing a foundation for the virtuosity of Renborn and Jansch to take us into heavenly places, whilst Jacqui's pure vocals are breath taking. The first four years of the band produced some of the best Brit-folk music of all time. I could listen to this music ever day of my life and never tire of it. Buy it and enjoy it.

If it had included the studio version of "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" it would have been perfect. :-)
Some of the movie tracks are not that enjoyable, but I was happy to have finally had a chance to hear them. There's plenty of great music on here even with skipping those tracks.

I just recently got this collection and had only listened to the first 3 discs but from what I have heard this is a great collection. It includes singles, alternate takes, key album cuts, and live performances from concerts, BBC radio, and TV and detailed liner notes in a nice digi pack booklet. All the members of Pentangle have contributed to the notes and the sound quality is amazing, especially the Shel Talmy produced cuts. This is an excellent (albeit expensive) primer if you're looking to get into this group since it gives a much broader overview of their recording career so if want to take the plunge into a sound incorporating traditional folk, jazz, pop, and amazing acoustic guitar playing than dive in here. Please keep in mind that the Pentangle was a lot jazzier in their approach than the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention even though these bands were drawing from the same well each one has there own unique sound but the Pentangle were far more popular so they are a pretty good starting point if you are looking to get in to the English version of folk-rock.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I purchased this disk "Time Has Come Today: The Best Of The Chambers Brothers" to get a copy of the great song "Time Has Come Today" which is a combination of psychedelic rock and soul. I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of the songs on the disk. The Chambers Brothers were one of the first integrated rock groups and their music was a great combination of psychedelic rock, gospel, soul and funk. Besides the memorable "Time Has Come Today" cuts like "A New Time - A New Day" and "Love, Peace and Happiness" emphasize the more psychedelic aspects of the band and contain some nasty distorted guitar work. Cuts like "Uptown" and "I Can't Turn You Loose" are more soulful cuts. "People Get Ready" brings the band's gospel roots to the front with excellent harmony vocals and a touching rendition of this classic song. "All Strung Out Over You", "I Can't Stand It" and "Funky" have infectious danceable funky beats. The music is sort of a cross between Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone. The compilation from 1966-1970 contains some rare singles and soundtrack cuts as well as an additional alternate version of "Time Has Come Today".

My only regret is that the disk is not longer. It is approximately 63 minutes so a number of additional cuts could have been added including the over 10 minute album version of "Time Has Come Today" rather than the single version included here. Do not let this deter you from purchasing this set. It is better than either of the other compilations listed on this site because it contains more cuts than either "Greatest Hits" or "Time". There are only 3 total songs from these other 2 compilations that do not appear on "Time Has Come:Best Of The Chamber's Brothers". This is a fine representation of how the musicians and bands of the sixties incorporated the influences of other genres of music into their own sound. It is a shame that this band is only known for "Time Has Come Today" because the Chambers Brothers deserve better as evidenced by this anthology.

Soul Rock Pioneers.......2002-09-03

Soon after purchasing this wonderful collection of soulfully rockin' gems I mentioned it to my old highschool buddy Pat,who's a record collecting fiend. "Dang, I'd forgotten all about them" ,he said. Well, me too,and that was unfortunate because I missed out on hearing some great music for the past thirty years. The Chambers Brothers were arguably the first self contained,songwriting, African American rock band in America.With the addition of British drummer Brian Keenan they were one of the first integrated bands to have success.They pioneered the way for Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone so their historical value would be substantial even if they were mediocre.In fact they're terrific!Great gospel trained voices singing funky rock n' soul over big fat beats.This was the sound that lessers like Rare Earth and Pacific Gas and Electric were trying for,but they just did'nt have the moxie to pull it off.'Time Has Come Today' was the big hit,and the version that appears here benefits from having seven minutes of psychedelic frou-frou edited from the middle.What's left is a tight rockin' tick tockin' postcard from the swinging sixties. Every song on here is fun and swinging.The live "Wade In The Water" provides an excellent example of just how good these guys were in concert.So now I gotta have their live album too.After all I gotta make up for thirty years time.You should get yours now.

This is a decent enough collection of the Chambers Brothers best but there are two songs which had great extended album versions: "Time Has Come Today'" and "New Generation." The original album which includes "Time Has Come Today" is still in print and can be ordered in cd form. Unfortunately, the "New Generation" album is not in print. Therefore, the "long" version of that song is hard to get. I loved the Chambers Brothers and I used to buy their albums in vinyl when I was in high school. I also used to see them perform live. I would play the great long versions over and over. Here, the collection is great but the versions included are disappointing. The cd still gets 4 stars for great performances by a great band.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This is classic Martina. One that you should absolutely have in your collection. I was very happy with how fast I received my order, but especially the fact that it was the correct cd. This is good ole country with beautiful blue eyes and a powerful voice.
I now have all of her cd's and this is a landmark cd for her. Her talents are strong and ever present during this recording. Songs like THE TIME HAS COME, CHEAP WISKEY and TRUE BLUE FOOL provide us with the typical country sound that we are all used to. I now know where the Dixie Chicks took some of their cues from.
This cd marks the debut of what will be one of country music's finest voices.
This cd is deeply enriched in the sound of country music. I have to say that this was a good launching point for Martina. Her later projects are not as "typical" country.But they provide us with so much fun and so much talent to enjoy, that you forget that it is atypical country. Her other cds (Emotion, Wild Angels and Greatest Hits) have touched on a new concept called pop-country. She will continue to be one of the most beloved and talented women in music today and in future.
I am glad to love her and her music.

Martina McBride's "The Time Has Come" is the best debut album ever. It is country in its purest forms. "The Time Has Come" is filled with awesome lyrics. My favorite tracks are: "The Time Has Come," "Cheap Whiskey," (with a message attached to it) "Walk that Line," "A Woman Knows," "True Blue Fool," "I Can't Sleep" and the album's strongest work is "That's Me" in my opinion. Martina McBride is an amazing singer!! This album is a great introduction to her craft. Make sure you add this cd to your collection!

SHE WENT ON TO TELL ABOUT HOW SHE PUT HER DEMO IN A PURPLE ENVELOPE AND MAILED IT IN. SOMEHOW IT GOT NOTICED, AND THE REST WAS HISTORY. NOW MARTINA MCBRIDE IS PROBABLY (OVERALL) THE BEST FEMALE VOCALIST TO COME OUT OF NASHVILLE, OR ANYWHERE FOR THAT MATTER. THIS DEBUT ALBUM HAS SOME REALLY GREAT SONGS ON IT. I AM HAPPY THAT I BOUGHT IT WHEN IT WAS FIRST ON THE MARKET. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN ANYONE TO BE DISAPPOINTED BY MARTINA MCBRIDE. One of the Most Important Figures of the British Folk Revival of the 1960s, Anne Briggs was a Huge Influence on Such Luminaries as Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Linda Thompson. This is her Second Full Length, Originally Released in 1971. Unlike Previous Releases which Contained Mostly Traditional Songs with Little Or No Accompaniment, this Album features Many Self-penned Numbers as Well as a Few Contemporary Covers with Briggs Playing Guitar and Bouzouki. Briggs Only Released Two Albums and a Handful of SINGLES/EPS Before Retiring from the Music Business Making this Reissue an Important Document of the British Folk Revival.

oh anne briigs..she should be famous..the queen of british folk..a hero, or heroine to sandy denny,bert jansch,jimmy page who got backwater slide from her and you can hear where he got led zepplins more folkie edge from plus richard and linda thompson and martin mccarthy and davey graham and shirley collins.all of those have spoken about her huge influence on the sixties british folk scene..richard thompson even wrote the beautiful BEESWING for her i beleive ( though i maybe wrong).that was enough for me to rush out and buy this greatest of great "lost" masterpeices....quite seriously up there with joni and juddee sill and karen dalton as one of the all time great albums...beautiful looks are matched by rough organic salt of the earth singing and strumming and brilliant haunting songs..most written by her....i massively recommend this genius record..its why we bother to keep searching for great music..buy it yes please do.

The Beauty of the Male Voice.......2006-05-04

I was fortunate to hear The Male Choir of St. Petersburg perform at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, and was stunned by the power and beauty of their song. The director, aware that the deep, resonate voices struck a chord within each member of the audience, held the final note of each song until it echoed from the rafters. The songs are usually traditional Russian songs, but are not religious chants, as many people seem to expect - one song, called "O My Field" is an ode to a farmer's plot of ground. I recommend this album, a great opportunity to revel in the beauty of the male voice.

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.
