Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

This album is a wonderfully crafted disc. It combines some of the greatest tracks from the moive. When I listened to it I initially had fond memeories of a great film. After repeated listening I began to enjoy several of the pieces on their own (such as Track # 10). This album I proudlt pum loud with the windows down and the sunroof open. It also, introduced me more to Indian music. A perfect place to begin fot the virgin listener, you get a mix of traditional and current popular dance styles.

5 out of 5 stars New Monsoon May Be the Ultimate Live Band!.......2007-06-22

The words "Telluride Bluegrass Festival" may fool you into thinking that this is simply a bluegrass or newgrass band, but in reality, New Monsoon are a multifaceted sonic storm that incorporates more stylistic influences than any band I know to be touring today (with the possible exceptions of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and The Mars Volta). The acoustic and electric energies of rock and bluegrass are incorporated by the fiery string work of Jeff Miller and Bo Carper. The three piece percussion section provides a sophisticated world rock sound. Bo Carper's sitar like usage of the banjo may be the most intriguing use of the instrument since Bela Fleck started pushing boundaries with the Flecktones. Perhaps the most criminally overlooked aspect of New Monsoon's sound is the incredibly wild yet tasteful keyboard playing of Phil Ferlino. An apt description was made when a reviewer said that Phil sounded like Brett Mydland (of Grateful Dead fame) but with more skill.

This is a band that must be experienced live. Even for the smallest audiences, they play with more energy and inspired improvisation than almost any other band currently touring. Do not miss them, they are worth every ticket price, and their tickets are usually dirt cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Tight, Professional, Jammin, Inventive.......2005-12-15

Ditto to the other reviews! The most unusual sound from a banjo...like giving Vassar Clements and Rahvi Shankar a banjo and seeing what they can do with it. They segue so easily from a bluegrass sound to eastern to jam to... This is 'world' music.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic live performance! Rock/Jam/World Beat/Bluegrass.......2005-03-24

This is one amazing band! The fact that this was recorded live at the Telluride Bluegrass festival shouldn't fool you into thinking this is another bluegrass/newgrass band. These guys ROCK ala Allman Bros/Santana/Dead/Pink Floyd etc! Electric and acoustic guitars are surrounded by an amazing rhythm section of drums, congas, Indian tablas and a killer bass player, and supported by an excellent keyboardist. This show is an excellent snapshot of a band destined to greatness (probably sooner than later). Get the album and look for them playing live in your area. They're touring nationally, and the venues are going to get bigger and bigger as people get hip to what these folks can do with Rock/Funk/Bluegrass/Indian/Latin/Jazz grooves. My pick for best live album recorded in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars A storm is brewing!.......2005-03-19

New monsoon live is incredible! Buy this album! And go see them live. The samples here are not long enough to really get a true idea of how they sound so I suggest you check their webpage to hear longer sound clips.

They are a difficult band to describe because they have so many influences and are classified in so many genres of music. They play the kind of music that makes your feet move and your heart sore.

Their three percussionists provide latin(Congas, Cajon), north indian (tablas et al), and rock/jazz (drum kit) influences and one plays a didjeridoo. Their keyboardist/ pianist provides rock melodies, jazz improv, space jams, funk and an accordian on rare occasions. The two guitarist provide blues, classic rock, sitar and bluegrass sounds with acoustic and electric guitars, the banjo and the dobro. And the bass player helps hold it all together with incredible bass lines that flesh out their sound and vibrate your soul.

Imagine Santana, the Allman Brothers, a tabla/ sitar duet, latin jazz artists, and bluegrass musicians playing together for over 1500 concerts and you have an idea of how new monsoon sounds live.

5 out of 5 stars GO SEE THEM.......2006-06-12

While this has become one recording that I find myself gravitating toward and playing quite often, I was not prepared for the performance that I witnessed live. Smilefest 2006 was scene of the crime. Incredible, inspired, and jammy. The smile on my face stayed for days. As with most 'Jam' bands the emphasis is on live music. And if you support live music and like the 'Jam' genre, well then this is for you. This band will be the leader of the next Jam wave. Someone has to and the Jam kingdom has no king right now. I can't describe how good this band is, you must witness it. The percussion alone with a tabla player, conga player, and drummer is something to behold. You will hear lots of sound influences from around the world. The band did Pink Floyd's Echoes and it was beautiful. Anyway back to the album - heartfelt, intricately textured rock tunes (ala String Cheese Incident, even Grateful Dead maybe) but better from a studio perspective. I hate to ring out names of other bands, but you have start somewhere so the reader gets the general idea. The record is pretty much flawless from start to finish. No filler, no useless material, all possible classics. They are picking up speed and getting a name. Seeing is believing though. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Really fine!.......2005-09-09

If you're looking at this release, then you're well aware that one criticism against the "jam band" community has been that the bands are great live, but struggle in the studio. Fortunately, that concept has been proven false with a number of excellent studio releases over the last several years and that trend solidly continues with this release by New Monsoon!

I'd been aware of these guys for awhile and have copies of a number of their concerts, but didn't have any of their studio work because, to me, their live shows sounded like a band that was still in search of their true sound. Granted, the members of New Monsoon are incredibly talented, at various points in any given song they can sound like everyone from Santana to the Allmans to Zappa, with a healthy dose of wide open exploration layered over all of it. While those ingredients can make for an exhilarating live show, it's tough to replicate it in the studio (just ask the Grateful Dead).

But, with this release, New Monsoon (and the co-production team of Paul Kimble and ace percussionist Michael Shrieve) have managed to capture the lightning in a bottle and have come out with a stellar release! Each song is well crafted and appropriately loose limbed enough to have you bouncing around your living room, while remaining tight enough to have the jams serve the song and leave plenty of room for further exploration in a live setting.

You'll still hear passages that are reminiscent of their influences but those nods bear the imprint of paying respectful (and playful) homage. To my ear, the pacing and delivery of the vocals in "Rock Springs Road" are even pleasantly reminiscient of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

Stylistically, some might be tempted to describe "The Sound" as similar to "Anchor Drops" by Umphrey's McGee but that might be as much of a stretch as comparing, say, the Allmans to Rush. Sure, the music of both cover a lot of musical ground, but where "Anchor" uses elements of prog rock for a lot of it's foundation, "The Sound" has a much more natural or earthy feel. Put it this way, "Anchor" frantically lurches between styles, but on "Sound" the transitions flow. For my tastes, "The Sound" is my clear listening preference.

On that note, I'll suggest that this release easily compares favorably with the excellent recent studio releases by LoS, moe., Phish, WSP, Railroad Earth, Jupiter Coyote, etc...and it certainly will be getting more time in my changer than the underwhelming "One Step Closer" by former label mates SCI.

If you've read this far, then you know you like this kind of music - "The Sound" will make you smile and want to dance! Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars A developing group........2006-09-25

A decent collection of songs from their independent label recording days. Caroline's Spine is a straight up rock group, and they have fun doing it, but they haven't fully hit their stride with any of these--with some embarrassingly bad lyrics--although, there are some gems hidden on here. Essential for a fan of the band, but if you're merely interested in the group start with _Attention Please_.

4 out of 5 stars Great album, Great band.......2004-02-06

I'm proud to say i bought this album the day it came out a number of years ago when i was in highschool. after hearing sullivan on the radio i had to have it. it's a true shame these guys didnt make it any more popular than 2 minor hits, sullivan and attention please(from their sophmore label release).

their music is full of fantastic lyrics by Jimmy Newquist, some that take a more serious tone with similarities to some of the Foo Fighters music like sullivan, monsoon, and wallflower, and some that have a sarcastic humor in the style of the Offspring such as necro, psycho, and trio pain. another thing i love about their lyrics is that many of them tell a story, almost in a bruce springsteen type style put to alternative/punk rock, and that's getting harder and harder to find these days with many bands lyrics being based soley on their own personal emotions.

If youre a fan of the Offspring, Green Day, Blink 182, the Foo Fighters, or even Bruce Springsteen, buy this album. they may have been influenced by these bands, but theyre no knock off band, they have a style and originallity all their own. you won't be let down.

4 out of 5 stars not so straight forward behind a straight rock sound.......2003-11-20

Let me start this by saying I'm a music first lyrics later kinda girl. If the music doesn't get me I'm not going to sit around to hear the actual words. That said Caroline's Spine is one the only bands where I feel the words actually tell you more than just what the music already says. Probably 98% of the time a song is what it sounds like after al right. Loud angsty songs usually have loud angst lyrics, soft sweet songs soft sweet lyrics and pained mope rock generally is mopey. I love Caroline's Spine because you can listen to the music and enjoy it and then listen words and have a whole new view on the song.

But I'm getting ahead of myself after all I am still a music first girl. And the music's good, solid guitars, not a solid wall of back breaking guitar (which can be a beautiful thing) but a undulating (pulsing if you will) record. There's a mix of electric and acoustic (mostly electric) ranging from upbeat and slightly jagged to slow and melancholy. It's not at all muddy (although again there's nothing wrong with sludgy rock) and has some nice bits of piercing guitar. And since you might as well consider vocals an instrument when you're not listening to their meaning I'll just go ahead and say Jimmy can stick when it comes to vocals. It's difficult to describe his voice. It's sometimes edged, rangy but always writhing naturally into emotive harmony with the music.

And what does he do with that oh so unthreatening voice? He sings exactly what you wouldn't expect from a cute, sweet looking guy. Don't get me wrong it's one of the most wonderful things to hear an upbeat romp called "You & Me" sung with weaving elastic vocals. You thinks it was sensitive, a light hearted love song? Perhaps. The tale an finished relationship tipped with sadness? Not quite. "yesterday is over, today I gotta deal with how tomorrow might suck. Suck if you don't understand the way it oughta be, it's got a lot to do with me." Sweet bliss that was unexpected. Thankfully the whole disc is littered with these straight faced gems, though there are genuine songs as well Like "Sullivan." However it was the tongue in cheek lyrics so unobtrusively woven into straight forward sounding songs that gained the bulk of my love. Songs like "Trio' Pain," "So Good Afternoon," "Sweet `n' Sour" and the not so subtle "Necro," my first but not my last ode to necrophilia. It's all really very charming.

4 out of 5 stars the greatest hits.......2003-09-05

Yeah it's true, i like to support my local bands. And Caroline's Spine just happens to be one of the greatest bands to ever call Tulsa Oklahoma their home.

With Monsoon their first big label release Caroline's Spine did something I wish more bands would do, release a compliation of songs off of their first four independent albums. "You and Me" being the only new song recorded for the cd is just one of the many songs that show off the spine at their best. "Sullivan" was the only radio single off the cd and retales the famous sullivan story of world war 2. "Wallflower" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my entire life and "So Good Afternoon" has some one liners that will be sure to draw a laugh or two.

I'm going to leave 1997's Monsoon with a nice 4/5, it makes me proud to be from northeast Oklahoma.

The younger voice of Sheila Chandra featured in 80's pop sound with unique Indian instrumentals. Enjoyable listening and great dancing beats. It is enjoyable to hear Sheila's sweet, youthful rendition of our favorite "Ever So Lonely".

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-11-20

I am so glad I bought 2 Chandra CD's at the same time, I was totally bummed out by Moonsung, and would never have purchased another one of her CD's, but this CD has lots of exciting, innovative, fun to listen to music. I love it an highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's in existence........2002-09-26

This CD is one of the favorite in my collection.
I play it over and over and over.

I was first blown away by the song "Eyes" when I heard
it on an alternative music station back in 1983. I went
right to the store and purchased "Third Eye" by Monsoon
(on vinyl) as an import. Since then, I'd been searching
for the same album as a CD.

This CD features the entire "Third Eye" album, plus
several additional tracks, and is retitled "Monsoon,
featuring Sheila Chandra."

Throughout, this CD cases traditional Indian instruments
and sounds, but toned down from the ordinary Indian style
which is very fast and loud. The stylings of Monsoon
take on a very relaxing mode, whether played softly or
loudly. Sheila Chandra's melodic voice carries this
music beautifully, while the background scores drone
hypnotically.

This CD also features a fascinating remake of the Beatles'
"Tomorrow Never Knows" from their "Revolver" album.

If one wants to "take a gamble" and purchase a CD of
music they've never heard before, this may be one worth
trying.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice!.......2002-07-11

Monsoon is a unique blend of Western Pop and clasical Indian sounds with the illumination of Sheila Chandra's beautiful voice.
Anyone that has an appreciation for traditional Indian sounds highlighted with Western pop sounds will truly enjoy listening to this album. Monsoon is radiant and it is too bad that this is the only album that it put out since from there on Sheila Chandra has pursued a solo career.
Tracks that are definitely worth listening to are Third Eye and Tikka TV, And I you, the instrumental Kashmir, Susnet over the Ganges, and don't forget the clever remake of The Beattles Tommorrow Never Knows that feautures a unique and interesting combination of sounds. Monsoon is a true gem and will not dissapoint the devoted to beautiful music.

2 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice over 80's cheese.......2000-06-26

Sheila Chandra does indeed have a beautiful voice. Having heard the sample of her voice on Bliss with other great Real World Records artists, I looked to buy more of Sheila Chandra. Unfortunately, I picked Monsoon; looking at the title, I now realize that featuring Sheila Chandra is much smaller and there's good reason.

This album features her early singing: the music of the pop 80's and there is plenty of pop 80's sound here with a slight twist. A clap machine, tablas, and electronic noise along with some other Indian instruments behind a beautiful voice make for an odd combination. For the most part, it's a unique sound to pop music. The cover of the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows is pretty good with plenty of tabla pounding. And with over 20 minutes of Ever So Lonely and its remixes, you better like this song or a large chunk of the CD won't be playable for you. (I don't.)

If you're looking for something more "international" in flavor, this album is not for you. If you like the sound of typical 80's pop music, you should enjoy Monsoon. If you want more Sheila Chandra than pop music, this album is definitely not for you.

5 out of 5 stars Playing it over and over again..........2006-05-22

I love the approachability of this band (my family just saw them perform, and the kids had such a blast!), and this particular album is really great.

Sometimes they remind me a little of They Might Be Giants. Most of their songs are not quite so ridiculous, but there is an element of humor in many of the tracks.

I was a little concerned about all the parental advisory warnings on the cd, but really bad stuff is too obscure for the kids to get anyway. There are definitely some instances of foul language, but the music is not hateful, and not overly sexual, either. The bad language is mostly used as expressions of frustrations with life, and as a parent, I don't really have a problem with it in that context.

I don't normally review music, but I wanted to give a vote on this one, because we have really enjoyed it - the CD has been playing almost non-stop in our house since we bought it, and we all really like it.

2 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the other albums.......2005-11-19

So to begin, I have to say that Wheatus is a band Ive always thought was underrated and they have consistently been in my music rotation for CD, mp3 player, computer whatever. I liked them enough even to order from England "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" Yet, I am not some dyed-in-the-wool fan or a hater, just a music lover.

Now for the review: this album leaves much to be desired. Frankly, I am disappointed. It is not nearly as good as the other two. While the first release was overall the best album, IMHO, I listen to the second album more as my favorite two songs from wheatus (lemonade and anyway) are on that album to counteract the 4-5 second-rate songs that were included. Unfortunately, the current release doesn't have enough great tunes to coverup the overall lack of quality songs on the album.

At first listen, the first song (something good) is, well, something good. It takes a different directtion from previous Wheatus fare, being heavier and rockin out more, but it works and is the best song on the album and probably in the top ten wheatus songs overall. Unfortunately, it is down hill from there. The second song (in the melody) is good and still rocks out. The next two are ok with London Sun being the better of the two. Listenable, but nothing to write home about. After these songs, Wheatus starts taking a different direction with disastrous results. Not a one is memorable and I found myself skipping the tracks to relisten to the first two songs.

If you like "classic" wheatus, this is probably not for you. Frankly, I will probably trade this album in for something else

5 out of 5 stars Wheatus Kicks Ass! .......2005-11-11

I'm giving this 5 stars because I am a Wheatus fan & I am what I is, so there you have it. I think it would be impossible for Wheatus to top "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" Their sophomore effort. If you like this album run as fast as you can somewhere, to wherever they have it & buy it immediatly! I guarantee you will not take it out of your stereo for months! It's a great album & just for the record I'm not some little punk that doesn't know anything about music. I'm 28 & I have my degree in Commercial Music & Jazz Studies & I've been playing guitar since I was 13. I went thru the same program Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge went through & even had private lessons from him. So, I'm qualified! On an individual instrument talent level, I can't give Wheatus that much, but on a level of putting out fun, great, don't give a crap, funny & catchy party tunes, I give these guy's all the credit in the world & I'd love to see them live, but they NEVER COME TO THE NORTHWEST!! damn it. But, anyway.. I'd tell you to purchase "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" before you purchase this & if you love it, then buy their first album "Wheatus" & love both of them! & then after you love both of them, buy this one & you'll love all 3! Cheers. Oh, I forgot.. actually! Don't buy "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" Buy "Suck Fony" it's the same exact album but it has 2 additional tunes on it. They re-released it after parting ways with Sony. Hense the title.. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Another great offering!.......2005-11-01

Don't let the lo-fi production quality steer you away from this great album. At first I was a bit cynical, having only known the "slick produced" Wheatus, but these songs are too good to let that hold back some perfect pop songs. If anything, the production adds to the realness of the songs offered. Another great album from the most underrated band of the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music for creating a healing space.......2006-03-01

I've listened to this music over the last 8 years while doing yoga and meditation; while giving bodywork; on going to sleep; and while painting. I find this music to be powerfully soothing and healing, allowing me to fall deeply into my Inner Self. If dis-ease could be discribed as losing touch with the self, this music could be used to "come back home." As a doctor and artist I recommend this music as vibrational medicine that has the capacity to bring on the "relaxation response" and realign a person with his/her intuitive self.

4 out of 5 stars Dhrupad for the Western Ear.......2005-04-14

Al Gromer Khan is probably best known for his superior sitar abilities, having been formally trained by the Khan-i-Gharana family of sitarists, a family which dates back to Mughal India. On this piece, Mr. Khan plays electronic keyboards of his own composition, which is accompanied by the accomplished Dhrupad singer Amelia Cuni.

Dhrupad is said to be the oldest form of vocalization/music originating in North India. It has become the basis for the classical form of Indian music, and its roots are said to be found in the recitation of sacred Sanskrit texts.

Traditional Dhrupad is in two major parts, alap and Dhrupad. Alap is vocalization without words, and is the meditative part of the traditional compositions. The second part, Dhrupad, is usually chanted accompanied by a two headed barrel shaped drum called a pakhawaj. The alap portion usually builds the raga and the dhrupad part becomes a worded chant in rhythm cycles. It is a very complex construction of composition, and to be a Dhrupad singer requires years of practice and a lifetime of devotion to the art form.

Al Gromer Khan provides a composition here that is soft, floating, never intrusive and allows for Ms. Cuni to fill the spaces between the keyboard accompaniment with her mellow vocals. I believe the piece never progresses beyond the alap form, allowing this to be a completely meditative composition.

To some people, dhrupad may be an acquired taste. If you are not familiar with this form of music it may seem foreign to the Western ear. However, Ms. Cuni's skills make this an excellent example of the art form. Mr. Khan has provided a background somewhere between Eastern and Western music styles, giving enough "Eastern Influence" to allow Ms. Cuni to not seem out of place, yet having enough "Western Influence" to allow the "Western" listener to find some hold on the music.

The style is floating, soft, like a still pool on a calm day, allowing Ms. Cuni to produce gentle ripples on the water. This is not traditional Dhrupad, which is why it works well to the Western ear. This is a very lovely work provided by both Al Gromer Khan and Amelia Cuni. mafoster

5 out of 5 stars A rare diamond!.......1998-08-24

Al Gromer Khan surprises me again. A one hour piece of meditative ambient music with the silky voice of Dhrupad singer Amelia Cuni. Great for Tantric nights, Brunello on a Sausalito fullmoon night. Not to be missed!
