Flautist Matt Molloy has had a charmed career. One of the founding members of the legendary traditional Irish group the Bothy Band, he went on to join the equally acclaimed Planxty. After recording a couple of albums with them, he was asked to join the most respected Irish group of them all, the Chieftains. His self-titled solo debut shows why he is so sought after. Here he plays with a passion that is astounding, taking the quick dance tunes at such breakneck tempos you wonder how he can keep from hyperventilating. There is a saying in Ireland: "There's many that can play the jigs and reels, but it's the slow airs that will sort them out." Just listen to the haunting "Lament for Staker Wallace" and you will know that when the sorting is done, Matt Molloy will stand alone.

Molloy, the Chieftains' flutist, owns a pub on Bridge Street in Westport in the County Mayo, where musicians from all over Ireland gather for a pint, a slice of pizza, and the kind of impromptu sessions where traditional Irish music thrives best. Last year Molloy allowed sound engineers to set up in the upstairs room and hang microphones above the musicians' favorite tables in the pub. On the resulting tapes, the conversation and clinking glasses soak into the music, as they should. Except for Molloy and Patrick Street's Arty McGlynn, the musicians aren't famous, but they are quite skillful and contribute some mighty lively music--which, as the liner notes point out, is not the same as fast music. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Music at Matt Molloy's.......2007-01-17
This is a great album for anyone who enjoys celtic, irish, bluegrassy, or something similar. I heard about it from a friend who loves celtic music. It is a live recording done at Matt Molloy's pub in Dublin. Good quality music all around, especially the amazing irish flute playing of Matt himself. There's a good mix of energetic and also slow, more mellow songs which give the album a well rounded appeal. I also recommend John Whelan's "Celtic Fire", Lunasa's "the merry sisters of fate", Solas's "Sunny spells and scattered showers", and the Chieftains' "boil the breakfast early".
Brilliant........2006-11-03
This album is such a great peak into the traditional music the way it was meant to be played. It made me a bit sad to hear so much chatter and noise on the solo singers tracks; if you ever go to a session I should hope you'll have more respect for a singer than that. Other than that the ambiance of the pub chatter and clanking pint glasses added to the feel of the tunes being played in their natural environment. The sound was fantastic and the players were superb. The collection of tunes was a good sampling of what you'd actually hear at many sessions and the switch from group performances to solo pieces kept it interesting and entertaining to listen to. If this album doesn't inspire you to play, dance or at least tap your toe then nothing will! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Cheers,
Johnny
I'd love to find more like it.......2006-01-17
This is a great, perfect album. I love the background noise and shuffle of the pub. Like others say, you can hear the tinkling of glasses and conversation, but really only between songs. It has lively fun as well as dreamy melancholy and beautiful songs. You can hear the band and the audience stomping out the rhythm and yelling out encouragement or singling along with the songs. There are also some great solo singing moments. I love how it's a session recorded straight through, it really makes you feel like you're there. This is the best Irish music album I own, and is in my top albums that I'll always listen to. If you like traditional Irish music you won't be disappointed, in fact you need this.
pure drop.......2005-11-18
This is a wonderful collection of traditional tunes and songs recorded live in Matt Molloy's pub. I know that some find the background noise and occasional stomping distracting, but I love the authenticity of it and it takes nothing away from the music in my opinion. There are a lot of standard session tunes, played with plenty of feeling. I've never heard a more inspiring version of Miss Monaghan or Queen of the May than on this recording. There are also some more obscure but excellent tunes such as the "set of jigs learned from Kevin's father." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates genuine traditional Irish music...you will not be disappointed.
The sound of a session, not a studio.......2004-04-12
The album does a fantastic job of capturing the sound of a pub session, which is the natural habitat of the music. Many other traditional music CD's sound sterile, as if they're classical pieces.

An oft-overlooked gem.......2003-08-07
Matt Molloy is widely heralded as one of THE master irish flute players and this record shows why. Molloy's playing is traditional, eschewing the sonic fireworks of Niall Keegan or the experimentation of Mike McGoldrick, yet his mastery is undeniable. Molloy puts a tangible emotion into his playing of the great tunes selected here and the result is impeccable.
Here's a taste for what the flute can do.......2001-01-30
If you're looking for a celtic music experience, there are better places to look. . . But if you're tired of only hearing 20 seconds of matt on Chieftains recordings and/or love flute music, then this ought to be on your list. He is certainly up there on the list of best flutists. His unique sound is the sound of someone who has played long enough to arrive at the master level, and long enough still to develop a personal touch with the master level stuff. If you're tired of hearing a master behind too many other instruments and want to hear one in the forefront, here's your cd.
Fine Playing by Molloy.......1999-11-27
The latest album from Matt Molloy is a feast of enjoyable arrangements and tunes. As flute player I like to hear the strong tone he puts into tunes such as The Morning Thrush. The Mason's Apron is an old favourite but in this rendition you can't help feel the enjoyment Malloy still feels in playing this tune. The end of it in particular mimics some classical pieces. The Music of the Seals is the longest piece. It takes the listener through a series of very pleasant tunes from a variety of sources. The use of the cello is most pleasing in this piece. The only weak piece for me is The Wind in the Woods which doesn't grab me. Overall this is an excellent album.
Another masterpiece from the master.......1998-05-22
Matt Molloy has been making recordings for nearly 25 years, plus keeping up a grueling performance schedule with various bands and running a pub in his spare time. But his musicianship has, if anything, gotten better: this album displays his skills in everything from the most straightforward traditional melodies to his own compositions, and even a Chinese tune. The supporting cast includes a fine "lilter," several long-time associates, and even a brief solo by Altan's foundress/singer. The suite "The Music of the Seals" is well done, and "The Banshee" is downright scary. I think Molloy's breathwork has suffered a little (probably from all those years of inhaling smoky pub atmospheres), but he's still a consummate musician.

Outstanding.......2001-09-25
On this album you hear Matt Molloy play a resonant, sonorouslow Bb flute and a brilliant, hornlike high Eb flute in addition to his regular D, giving a wonderful variety of timbres and textures to his playing. In particular, his track of Drowsy Maggie on the Bb just lays back and cooks, and his "Jenny's Chickens" on the Eb is played with a brilliant brutality that any lover of the stronger, harsher sounds of the wooden flute will immediately want more of.
Matt Molloy at his finest.......1998-06-23
Of Molloy's many recordings, this remains my favorite. With his usual virtuosity, he performs a selection of traditional tunes ranging from the lively to the gently melancholy. This album has a more consistent "feel" than most of his others: there isn't an intense heartbreaker (like "The Parting of Friends" or "O Rathaille's Grave"), and even the jollier tunes are restrained. But it's never dull: the variety comes from the different timbres of his wooden flutes, and from the characteristic tones and harmonies of the accompaniment. He's well supported here by his former Bothy Band colleagues Michael O Domhnaill (guitar) and Donal Lunny (bouzouki, synthesizer, et al.). Molloy's phrasing is nothing short of marvelous: the interaction between the instrument, the player, and the tune is nowhere any clearer than on a simple flute controlled by the life-energy of the breath. Elsewhere he's compared playing the flute to walking a tightrope -- but on this album he doesn't merely walk, he dances.

pure genius.......2005-11-18
If you love traditional Irish music you must listen to this! In my opinion Tommy Peoples is a musical genius, and this features him at his best. It is easier to hear and appreciate the Donnegal elements of his fiddling on this album than in his tunes with the Bothy Band. Matt Molloy also shines as always, as does Paul Brady. There is not a bad number on this album, and I give it my highest recommendation.
A classic!.......2000-04-15
This is truly a classic recording of authentic, top-quality Irish music by two of Ireland's greatest traditional musicians. While Matt Molloy is universally regarded as a master flute-player, Tommy Peoples holds a position of reverence among Irish fiddle-players that is reserved for probably just one person in every generation. Together they are a musical powerhouse! They have distinctive guitar accompaniment on the album and one's view of that style will be a matter of personal taste. In any case, you will not tire of this album! (I would like to see Tommy Peoples' other recordings available on Amazon also).
Maybe the greatest album of traditional Irish dance music.......1998-06-19
I consider this album an absolute must for any Irish music collection. Matt Molloy is a consumate flute player who plays not only with speed and fire but with incredible acurracy. Tommy Peoples has never sounded so exciting as on this classic album. His playing literally explodes and captures you from the first note. Paul Brady's accompaniament helped set the standard for modern backing of tunes. Together they created a sound that paved the way for such bands as Altan and Solas. Their version of Toss the Feathers is emulated in sessions the world over. If you want to learn to play Irish music or just appreciate its firey beauty you MUST BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
Sit down, shut up, and hang on.......1998-05-21
This is a wonderful album. Molloy is a virtuoso flautist with a low-key manner, while his former Bothy Band colleague Peoples is a charismatic, creative, rather erratic fiddler. But both share the same approach to tunes: d*mn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. Together they play with fire and passion, enlivening the traditional tunes without losing any of their nuances. Brady is a perfect accompanist, supportive but not intrusive, and performs handsomely as a soloist too. This may be an oldie, but it's a recording I keep reaching for again and again.

Doesn't GET much better than this..........2006-01-06
I would tend to disagree with both of the last two reviewers.
I've played trad music for years and as a flute player myself I understand the relationship needed between musicians in order to form a very tight duet. Playing solo is very different from playing with other people. Matt and Sean obviously grasp this very important concept. Neither of these musicians are playing on this album the way they might if they were playing solo. They both understood that, in order to create a musical relationship (a conversation, if you will), both needed to put aside some differences and concentrate on their similarities. The result is some of the tightest, note for note flute and fiddle you will ever hear. Sure, in his solo work, Sean shows his amazing virtuousity as a fiddle player. But as a duo, many of the complexities are dropped in order to maintain the melodic flow and tightness (having said that, there are some incredibly tasty variations played out at breakneck speed; that takes work and dedication to arrangement and much time spent playing together) Both players unselfishly work to each other's strengths and they obviously are enjoying the conversation immensely. Sure, you will never be able to play every note or phrase exactly the same way on instruments as extremely different as fiddle and wooden flute. But the fact that they have nearly succeeded is testament to this album's lasting impact. Also, it features some really great and classic tunes;) Arty McGlenn's guitar playing at this time was also revolutionary and has gone on to influence many guitarists playing today. One of the album's (and producer McGlenn's) other great strengths is that many of the tracks were recorded with no backup. We hear the fiddle and flute together with nothing else to distract (although I wouldn't have minded the tapping feet of either player along with the tunes to further effect).
The Molloy, Peoples, Brady album was huge influence on me in my early days of playing Irish music and it is still one of the great recordings, but in finally hearing this album my assessment is exactly the opposite of an earlier reviewer's: Keane and Molloy are actually tighter, both in their rhythmic sensibilities and in their personal musical styles than Molloy and Peoples. This remains one of THE classic duet albums in the Irish trad consciousness.
The best of the best.......2002-01-17
These are two wonderful musicians. Of course their approaches are different. One plays a fiddle and one a flute. E.g., each will ornament a C# differently. Matt has his roots in a solid dance tradition while Seane seems more Ceoltas oriented, more for performance than for dance. Matt approaches the music far more creatively, IMHO, than Sean Keane. Matt Malloy makes love to a tune; Sean Keene wrestles with it. I may be projecting, since I play both instruments and find the flute easier, though perhaps not as expressive as the fiddle. At any rate, no-one denies that this is a top-ten CD, the Chieftains without the show. Just the music. These are classic tunes played with passion and great beauty, solidly within the great tradtion. Buy it. You'll wonder how you've lived so long without it.
Two wonderful soloists, ill yoked.......1998-05-21
Molloy is (IMHO) the world's best traditional flautist, while Keane is a magnificent virtuoso fiddler. But I find this album almost painful to listen to. Keane's approach to a tune is to sidle up to it, whisper sweet nothings in its ear, and seduce it; Molloy walks straight up to it, looks it in the eye, and says "Let's do it." This discrepancy isn't apparent when both men are playing with the Chieftains because everyone's individual style is rather lost in the shuffle (or they're playing solos and free to do their own thing). But on this album Keane is trying to suppress his natural discursiveness and follow Molloy's straight-ahead approach to the tunes, and it just doesn't work. It's still a good album because both men are wonderful musicians, but they don't mesh well (Molloy's album with Tommy Peoples, who shares his musical approach, is a horse of quite another color).
Product Description
"As the title of this CD, 'As we got them' implies, the musicians here are playing tunes from their own place - music that has been handed down over the generations. In the 1920s and '30s, the music of this area was recorded by other local musician, most notably Michael Coleman, Paddy Killoran, James Morrison, John McKenna; so there's a line here, a continuity, an effort to preserve the regional musical identity. But of course there are no hard and fast rules. A number of tunes, adopted from here and there, have filtered into the musical consciousness over the years and have made themselves at home - which, I suppose, proves that a good tune has no boundaries.
I have met all the musicians at one time or another and played with most of them. All are proud and passionate about their music and have spent their lives playing it. As I understand it, there are no studio tricks included here. The music is genuine and from the heart - what you hear is what you get. A cross-section, if you like, of the music that is currently played in the region. For those interested in the music, this CD is definitely worthy of a special place in their collection" .......... Outstanding performances by a master.......1998-05-22
A French friend of mine went to the first Parisian concert by the Chieftains after their original flautist, Michael Tubridey, retired and was replaced by Matt Molloy. Many of the attendees had been great fans of Tubridey's and weren't sure the change would be for the better. But after Molloy's first solo, my friend avers, they were so astounded they almost forgot to clap. This album will show you why.

Customer Reviews:
Matt Molloy bats 1.000.......1998-05-22
My favorite album by Molloy is "Heathery Breeze," which I'm sorry to see appears to be out of print. So I was prepared to be let down by this album, its immediate successor. Happily, Molloy exceeded even his usual standards: these performances are characterized by agility, sensitive phrasing, a straight-ahead but not perfunctory approach to the tunes, and discreet accompaniment. "The Parting of Friends" is a heartbreaker, but there are plenty of jolly jigs and reels to cheer you up again. A winner.
