Touches the heart.......2006-11-11

The energy, melancholy, earthiness, spirituality, and rhythmic drive of Andean folk music are well represented in this collection. I have owned the tape for over 25 years and was delighted to see that Amazon carried the CD.

I was fortunate enough to have attended several performances of Tahuantinsuyo many years ago. Their approach is fresh, enthusiastic, and heart-felt. If you enjoy the music of the Andes, I highly recommend this CD.

Authentic Mestizo-style Andean music.......2004-12-29

This is one of the most authentic Andean CDs you can get. This album was originally released as a vinyl LP in 1978. The musicians are all originally from South America (one from Ecuador, one from Perú, and one from Argentina). What is so remarkable about this album is that it does not suffer from being overproduced like so many Andean albums of the 1980s and 1990s. It's not drenched in reverb and multi-tracked. It is simply three musicians playing their native music honestly.

The origins of the musicians is quite evident in their sound - every song is influenced by the musical styles of Ecuador, Perú, and Argentina. There may be Bolivian songs on here, but they do not sound like Bolivians are playing them.

The sound is dry and closely-microphoned. It sounds as if the recording studio was very small. Otherwise, it sounds rather well-mastered. No tape hiss is evident, and it was recorded in stereo. The soundstage is not hugely convincing, but it is acceptable. This may be one of the best-sounding Andean recordings to come out of the 1970s, though it is not a recording produced with the Audiophile in mind.

The CD runs just a few seconds over 36 minutes, which is most certainly due to the fact that this was originally released on LP, not CD. But in that amount of time, they manage to fit in 12 tracks that are very authentic, and without much in the way of modern influences. The musicians are not the most gifted in the world, but they play well, and they play well together. This recording is thoroughly enjoyable for anybody interested in the Mestizo music of Ecuador, Perú, or Argentina.

Track 1 is the best on the CD, lively, good flute, good travelin music. Need more stuff like this. CD is faily short as well, probably 30 minutes.

First south american music CD I've bought. I was looking for a CD with good pan flute and interesting relatively quick beats. Track 1 is definitely better than the others. Search continues for music like Track 1 on this CD. This CD is relatively short, seems like about 35 minutes or less.

Fantastic.......2001-09-19

This CD is a beautiful collection of tribal, contemporary new age. Lots of tribal beats, pan flutes, and contemporary instruments create the perfect music for a rainy day. There are some flamenco influenced music on here. I could play this when I,m going to the botanical garden on a misty day. Marcome's Yeku is the my second favorite song of this CD. Her vioce reminds me very much of that of Enya's. My favorite song on here is Ah-Kins Waterfalls. I can imagine myself looking at the cliffs in the rainforests with waterfalls with thunderstorm clouds in the background. Some of the songs are weak. Dance Of The Lambs starts somewhere but goes nowhere. The last track is downright boring. Apart from the thins spots this CD is great.

Go out and give it a try. If you thought this CD was great, try Earthtone Two and Three. They are even better.

Relaxing and energizing at the same time. Tribal rhythms and soothing, spiritual passages. The beauty of this music is how it combines cool, down-tempo beats with rhythyms and melodies inspired by a diverse collection of cultures--native Americans, Andean, Celtic, etc. The beauty of the Earthtone label (Earthtone by the way perfectly suits the essence of this music) is how they compiled these tracks from many artists onto one CD yet make it sound like they were always meant to be together.

I have always loved relaxing, atmospheric music and this CD first turned me on to "World Music". I have recommended this CD to many people, including several who hate new age music and typical "world music"--all thank me to this day.

I find it hard to say enough about this CD--it is one of my favorites, one of those you pick up on a whim but becomes such a pleasant surprise and forever treasured.

If you like New Age and want to sample titles off the Earthtone record label, this CD is very good. But when placed with other compilation albums like "Pure Moods" and "Elevation 2", Earthtone Collection One pales in comparison. Some of the tracks drone on a bit, and many are uninspired. Try Earthtone Collection two for a more eclectic mix of new age music.

Album Details

The Chilean Group Formed in 1965 Writing Lyrics Inspired by Social Issues Related to Its Country and Combining them with Autochthonous Musical Arrangements. In 1966, the Band Came in First Place at the Festival De Festivales, Releasing Its First Album that Same Year. Folk Singer and Songwriter Victor Jara Helped the Band by Promoting Quilapayun's Music and Making the Record Canciones Folkloricas De America Together. As Chilean New Song's Ambassador, Quilapayun Went on Its First European Tour in 1968. Due to Chilean Political and Social Changes in the Early '70s, the Group Settled in Foreign Countries for More Than a Decade.

The flutes and guitars are augmented with nifty effects, such as the storm on their version of El Condor Pasa. While all instrumentals, you can tell the musicians get into the spirit of things by the occasional enthusiastic yelling as in Yamor.

I first heard this group in the street, performing live at an open market in the heart of New York City. Their music beat through my bones, and I was so thrilled by it, I bought their CD on the spot. They are obviously in love with their culture and its music, and they are polished, right down to the occasional vocal roar. It's a great CD for an upbeat, happy gathering.
