Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
One last touch of Paris (but oversold by the critics).......2005-10-11
If he were more tlaneted he might have wirtten masterpieces, but mostly this sounds like Samuel Barber on skim milk. Rorem often sets minor, if not trivial poetry. His lyrical gift is modest. But there's no doubt that he has been neglected, largely because of his stubbornly tonal conservatism, and now that tonality is repsectable again, he is being accorded last-minute honors. I'm glad for him, and his best work, which consists of his multi-volume memoirs, has added much to American culture. But even when skillfully sung by an artist of the caliber of Susan Graham, a hour's worth of Rorem's tiny jewel-like chansons is about twice too much at one sitting.

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.
Contains many piano solo treasures.......2006-03-26

Arias Toward the Black Sun
Manufacturer: Deathgasm Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000S7AJ2O |
Product Description
Tenebrous is a great new Black Metal band from West Palm Beach, Florida, that has managed to punch out the EP Arias Towards the Black Sun. It has a dark and gloomy sound as defined by the word tenebrous, that has been influenced by such notable acts as Emperor, Darkthrone, and Leviathan (USA-Moribund Records). The music is fast, falling in line with Emperor/Darkthrone, but mid paced in portions in the style of Grand Belials Key or Leviathan. The soaring melodies are damned good and if I was still a young Metal fan filled with ideologues about life, politics, and religion this disc might be one of my sound tracks despite the fact that it has questionable philosophies about National Socialism, and Aryan tenets as its undercurrent. Among the albums 8 tracks are an intro and outro that are all worth your buying coins. Beyond the music is the exceptional CD packaging and art. The CD and booklet are glued together in light grayish brown textured cardboard. Drawings accompany the lyrics to each track, which are a nice highlight and a good change from the typical band images that come with most discs. Also, despite the fact that some of the art is racist, or National Socialist driven it is still detailed and worth looking at more than once. This album also has great production to go with its exceptional layout and songs. All the instruments are audible and vocals a entrancing. Basically, this is a must own for any fan of Metal in any genre.
