5 out of 5 stars What a BAND!.......2006-10-14

Got this one just for Roger Ingram on "Just Kiss Me". Folks, this is how lead trumpet is done!

4 out of 5 stars Probably his finest work overall.......2005-11-12

Other releases of Harry's better demonstrate his jazz chops (some of the cuts on WHEN HARRY MET SALLY [ASIN B0000026V6] and 19[ASIN B0000026LW]) and others are more experimental (the Nawlins' funk expressed on SHE [ASIN B000002A64]) but as a reflection of Connick's usual big band style, this is probably his most realized attempt at offering his affection for the style by trying to add to the "Great American Songbook".

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Red Light, Blue Light" starts the disc in fine fashion with a tune that slinks along like a long lost film noir tune. (Listen to the contrast between the quiet clarinet and sections and the brassy bombast and see if you don't think "detective theme".) Connick knows that life can still be good if the bank account's not. ("Who cares if the floor ain't level/Or if the ceiling falls in....I can't be concerned/Why should I care?/No place I'd go alone would ever compare/Cuz I know/You're there") "You Didn't Know Me When" casts Connick as a rascal full of tall tales. ("If you want a resume, I'll put it in writing/It's only good for a day and the contents are frightening..") He shrugs aside suggestions of his truth-stretching by simply noting "Baby, you didn't know me when..." "He Is, They Are" follows a father through his children's eyes from days as breadwinner ("He is strong/They are secure") through a divorce ("She was gone/They were confused/He was forgetful/They were supportive") and finally as an aged man needing their help ("He is needing/they are giving/He is glad they are his own".) "With Imagination (I'll Get There)" is the most influenced by Connick's hometown, imbued with a heavy Dixieland flavour. "The Last Payday" is a cautionary tale to n'er-do-wells that reminds you that "You're always lucky/'til you get caught". It also makes nifty use of a billiard sample.

LOWS:
"Jill" is a bland sop to Connick's paramour at the time (wife now I believe). It features half-baked sentiments like "Look, my darling/And you'll hear me sing 'I love you' with my eyes". "It's Time" has way too much music and too little lyric. What could have been a decent tune if kept succinct drones on past the point of my interest. "Sonny Cried" is a sleepy affair based entirely around Connick's croon and Russell Malone's acoustic guitar. That in and of itself isn't the kiss of death but the lyric just doesn't have any real heft.

BOTTOM LINE:
Comes as close as I've heard to standing alongside Porter, Gershwin, etc. It's still the Connick CD I pull out most often. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Can never be replicated.......2004-05-26

This is by far Harry's most complete album. I got this CD in 1991 when I was twelve and just getting into music and fell in love with it. Thirteen years later I am still listening to the CD. It starts out with a powerful ballad in Blue Light, Red Light, comes to the halfway point with a great dixie land swing mix in With Imagination (great solos) and ends with a high energy big band piece, Kiss Me. People who appreciate jazz and music alike will be assured to enjoys hours of listening. P.S. Go see Harry live, the man puts on a great show and is an audience pleaser.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2004-02-20

This album is by far my favorite of all Harry's offerings. I first saw him on Donahue ages ago and ended up getting this CD. Harry since put out several other albums trying to re-invent himeself along the way with a little funk but the songs from Red Light Blue Light are what I measure all his other albums up against.

Harry on Red Light Blue Light is backed up by an extremely talented big band whom much of which are also featured on a Harry Connick Jr. DVD I highly recommend called The New York Big Band Concert.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of the Best.......2002-11-05

My mother, guided by a recommendation from a store clerk, bought the cassette of this album for my father on their wedding anniversary. So my very first exposure to Harry Connick Jr. was by chance. Or rather, by destiny: as this album has inspired me in more ways than I can describe.

Six years later, after having worn out two tapes, i bought the album on CD. Now, five years after buying the CD, I plan on buying another - as it's been played over and over and over, causing much abuse.

A romantic effort with emotion so deep it is best measured in leagues, every song on the album is an amazing listen. From the beautiful title track that tells how all one needs for happiness is love to "He is, They Are" that tells of the care of a single father, Harry's voice takes you on a musical journey of which is likened to a quiet stroll in central park (or perhaps Berkley Square) on a warm August night.

His voice is often compared to Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, yet he remains undoubtedly his own - with a swing that is straight from 1943. Sometimes sweet, sometimes hot - the jazz is always grooving, rich and enveloping with instrumentation that is nothing less than perfect - thanks in no small part to solos by Leroy Jones (trumpet), Jerry Weldon (tenor sax), Brad Leali (alto sax), Ned Goold (tenor sax), and Russell Malone (acoustic guitar).

Enjoy "A Blessing and a Curse" and "With Imagination (I'll Get There)." Delight in romance with the likes of "She Belongs to Me" and "If I Could Give You More." Have fun with "Just Kiss Me" and "You Didn't Know Me When." Shed a tear with "Sonny Cried" and "The Last Payday." Listen to "Jill" and consider if it isn't the best Love song you've ever heard.

"Blue Light, Red Light" is, without a doubt, Harry Connick Jr's best album. I can say this because I own all of his albums. Proudly.

Treat yourself to good music with passion and soul and travel into the far, shadowed corners of your own heart and see what you discover. Treat yourself to "Blue Light, Red Light."

I've been giving this(first a cassette, now a cd) as a gift to children since it first appeared in the mid-80's. It's as fresh and wonderful today as it was then. I know many children who grew up knowing the words to all the songs and internalizing the wonderful messages they impart.Check out other cd's by Red.

Still best remembered for his evocative "City Of New Orleans," which brought Arlo Guthrie his long single hit, the late Steve Goodman was a gifted songwriter, affecting singer, and spirited acoustic guitarist who forged a link between the urban troubadors of the '60s and the "sensitive" singer-songwriters of the '70s. The elfin Chicagoan could tug heart strings as well as the latter camp (try his version of "The Dutchman," or fine originals like "Banana Republics" and "Yellow Coat"), but Goodman was never content to brood over mere heartbreak. His recordings and solo live performances were ripe with humor, from lively updates of old rags and Tin Pan Alley tunes ("It's A Sin To Tell A Lie") to topical parodies ("Lincoln Park Pirates," "Chicken Cordon Bleus," and the ultimate country song, "You Never Even Call Me By My Name," written with John Prine), and this generous two CD anthology captures it all, culling studio and stage tracks from throughout his career. --Sam Sutherland

I appreciate this set more as a BIG fan and have ALL of Steve's albums and cd's and a few tapes etc... BUT this has just what a fan with all the albums needs. More unreleased Steve Goodman!!!
I for one am glad they left off tracks already on other releases and chose to place alternate versions here where I can experience their other side.

There really needs to be a huge box set of unreleased everything.
Man that would be nice

thanks Steve for the songs
thanks to his family for releasing these rarities

5 out of 5 stars A Dying Cubs Fan.......2007-02-04

Got this CD because it had two songs specifically written for all of us Cub fans. Haven't been to Wrigley Field since I was in high school but have remained a die-hard Cub fan and like Ernie always says, "Let's Play Two"! Never heard of Steve Goodman until someone sent me an email version of his song, "A Dying Cubs Fan Last Request".............wish I'd heard of him earlier as he was one of those early story tellers and ballad singer/songwriter (like Harry Chapin and Jim Croce)........songs were fun and he entertained his fans. I'm going to have to get some of his other CDs, just to hear more of his stories!

3 out of 5 stars What Happened to the Dance and the Coat? .......2007-01-21

I had the great fortune of seeing this artist in a small college concert in Nebraska in the early 70's and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I loved this guy's music and humor and was heartsick when I heard he passed at such a young age. He had a special way of singing touching ballads without being too sappy, sentimental or over the top with emotion. And yet, they would just rip your heart out.

This 2-CD set is good and I do appreciate 2 songs about the Cubs and the very funny live medley! Also, both CD's are nice and long (CD1 is 75 and CD2 is 73 minutes). But there are a few things that really bother me about this anthology.

First, while Goodman had a great live act, I agree with a previous reviewer that many of the live versions here seem rushed through and there is too much crowd noise. I'd have deleted some of the live songs and added a few more studio versions to start off CD2. I wish they would have included studio recordings of "Donald and Lydia", "Mind Your Own Business" and "You Never Even Called Me By My Name." Both the studio and live versions of this last song should be on this 2-CD set.

The biggest disappointment for me though is this: The MAIN reason I bought this CD was to get one of my favorite songs of all time, "Would You Like to Learn To Dance." I asked my best man to play this song at my wedding! I had the 1972 LP with this song on it and couldn't wait to hear the clean CD version. So I was more than irritated to find that the version of this song on this anthology was NOT the same version that is on the 1972 album.

I have the same complaint about "Yellow Coat" - another incredibly poignant ballad and probably my second favorite Goodman song. This song was also on the 1972 LP. The studio versions of both these songs on this anthology are not, in my opinion, nearly as good as they are on the 1972 album. So I had to go out and buy the CD of Goodman's 1972 album anyway.

In the end I give this great artist 10 stars and wish to God he was still with us. I always wanted him to record a song with John Mellencamp or maybe John Lennon! But this compilation gets only 3 stars for messin' with Dance and Coat.

1 out of 5 stars Grossly inadequate tribute to an exemplary musician.......2006-05-02

I really, really wanted to like this compilation. Steve Goodman's music has affected me for three decades: his lyrics, his humor, his consummate musicianship...why one star? Briefly, the first disc (studio recordings) doesn't have some of his best stuff, and the second disc (the "live" stuff) is indifferently recorded and (even worse) sometimes indifferently performed.

I'm not prejudiced against live recordings: many are excellent, such as "The Weavers at Carnegie Hall" or "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison". This live disc sounds like it was recorded in a small bar with a small circle of yahoos whose whoops and hollers get really annoying after a while. Now if you were one of those yahoos present, you'd like this CD as a souvenir; for the rest of us, it's fairly tedious. It also shows Goodman singing some of his stuff in a fairly bored I-gotta-finish-this fashion or in a cynical style ("As Time Goes By" is almost unlistenable). Several of of his more popular songs are on the live disc: "Chicken Cordon Bleus", "Turnpike Tom", "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" (another indifferent performance), "Men who Love Women Who Love Men"--they just aren't up to the standards of his studio recordings. I can't believe his estate approved this release.

I was fortunate to see Goodman twice in the seventies. At one huge outdoor Country Music festival that had big names like Willie Nelson, he got up on stage in front of 20,000 people with just his guitar--that takes guts--and wowed 'em. Then he sang a song about a Vietnam War widow ("The Ballad of Penny Evans")--sang it a capella, no less--and brought those 20,000 people to a standing ovation. Steve Goodman live was an incredible experience--an experience which this disc (sadly) does not capture at all.

The one saving grace of this compilation is the notes in the booklet, which has a bunch of his old pals reminiscing about him. Interesting stuff, but doesn't make up for the fact that if you want a good introduction to his music you really ought to look elsewhere. Try the original Buddah recording, "Steve Goodman" and then maybe move on to "Words we Can Dance To" and "Jessie's Jig and other Favorites". His pals got together some years back and made "A Tribute to Steve Goodman", which is excellent.

Pet Peeves department: How could any decent compilation leave out the aforementioned "Ballad of Penny Evans"? Not to mention his fine cover of Big Bill Broonzy's "The Glory of Love". And how about the one he wrote with Jimmy Buffett, "Door Number Three"?

I've enjoyed the notes on this album far more than the album itself. If it's the only introduction to Steve Goodman available to you, enjoy it with the understanding that there's a lot more to Steve and his music than this sloppy compilation delivers.

way cool, especially the live disc, reminded me of seeing his concerts many years back. Steve is gone, but his music will allways live on!

1 out of 5 stars Not a CD to add to your Johnny Lang Collection.......2006-07-01

I appreciate and like Johnny Lang's music. There is no doubt that he is amazing. However, this CD is awful. It does not demonstrate his true abilites and should have the "kid" still in the title. The CD is good if you want to complete your collection, but this CD is not one worth listening to twice. Save your money and wait for his next CD release.

5 out of 5 stars Jonny Lang .......2006-03-15

this kid is great. i have several of his cds and they all are great. this kid can sing. i listen to him at work, in the car and on my ipod.
this is good sounds, not hostil or booming. you can hear the words and understand what he sings. he as always has a good band backing him up.
i would buy this again should something happen to the cd that i have now.

5 out of 5 stars A solid, rocking blues cd.......2005-08-10

I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Jonny Lang and his brand of music. This was his first cd and a brilliant entrance into the world of music. The boy is a very talented writer and musician.

5 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT.......2004-08-12

For 14 yrs old at this time I can't believe how great this cd is. You can still hear the kid in his voice, but it is just amazing how really great he is. I love it. Every single song is great.............................sbaby

Very bluesy - slower than his later releases. Hopefully he will come back to this style as he matures and after he's done experimenting with other sounds.

Album Details

2005 Album from the Singer Songwriter, her First after Having her First Child. The Opener "Welcome" Appeared on an Earlier Us Release and Includes Contributions from Dido. Further, as She Explains, "For the First Time I Had Something Else Besides Music (My Baby) Taking Up My Time and Attention. So Instead of Having Endless Days with Nothing to Do but Write, I Had 2-3 Hours on a Good Day. And that Meant Focusing in and Working Very Intensely in a Way I Hadn't Done Before. It was a Challenge. But at the Same Time I was Incredibly Inspired to Write for this Album. I Had Just Had a Life-altering Experience! I Felt Like My Heart Had Been Blown Wide Open and I was the Most Vulnerable and Yet the Strongest I Had Ever Been."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Like a good bottle of wine, Heather improves with time.......2007-05-21

With her unmistakable voice, Heather Nova shares with us another part of her universe filled with different emotions. The song "I miss my sky" is particularly powerful with a chorus that gives you a nice chill through your spine. I've been following Heather Nova since her album Oyster and even though this album doesn't have the raw energy of Oyster or Siren, it still has the Heather Nova trademark stamped on it. She has grown in maturity being now a mother and all this reflects on this album and shows us how a great artist Heather Nova is.

5 out of 5 stars A Return to Excellence.......2007-03-23

I fell in love with the Oyster album of Heather Nova 10 years ago. Then I bought Siren with high expectations and was let down. It was too mellowed down. I still hoped for more from Heather Nova but reviews of her albums implied that those after Siren were even more tame, so I didn't buy them. Finally I gave her most recent album 'Redbird' a chance and I'm so glad I did. I still like Oyster the best due to a few songs I feel to be outright rock masterpieces. However Redbird is solid from start to finish and has 5 or 6 songs that are near the masterpiece level. The energy of the music is back up again and her songwriting is fantastic as ever. That incredibly beautiful voice that is so unique is as great as ever. I'm so happy I have another Heather Nova cd to put in my rotation with Oyster. I enjoy playing this one over and over. Check Heather Nova's music out if you don't know her! P.S. Her cover of Wicked Games is right on, a beautiful, splendid use of her singing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2006-06-22

I came across this album on a transatlantic flight where the rest of the audio program didn't seem too great so I thought, give this one a try (I remembered the name Heather Nova from one of my daughter's birthday wish list - which I guess dates me - but had never consciously listened to her). I wound up listening to "Redbird" for five hours, again and again. Back in Europe I bought the CD (too bad it's available in the US as an expensive import only) and have become completely entranced by it. Unlike so many other popular albums that you can listen to a dozen times with pleasure and then get bored by, this one gets better and better. Every time I put it on I discover something new, some nuance or phrase that just grabs me. "I Miss My Sky" and "The Sun Will Always Rise" are my favorite tracks. This is magic, a true work of art. Thanks, Heather. Thanks, Lufthansa. Thanks, daughter.

3 out of 5 stars First, let me start off by saying that I love, love, love.......2006-03-20

Heather Nova. This CD, however, did not reel me in as her previous works, notably Oyster and Siren. Yes, she is a new mother and has gotten older (mellower?), yes people change and try new things, blah, blah, blah. This CD, in my humble opinion, just lacks umph and is quite boring. I hate to say that because some songs are for her child (I think), but that isn't a reason to give a CD more stars than it deserves.

I am and will always be a huge fan of Heather, but this effort just didn't do it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Return to Form .......2006-03-18

After the disappointing 2003 album 'Storm', 'Redbird' is a welcome return to form for Heather. Once again enlisting the production services of Felix Tod, Heather has armed herself with a judicious cover (Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'), a catchy opening track ('Welcome' co-written with Dido Armstrong). The album also contains some strong originals, some of them tributes to her son, most notably the touching 'Sing you Through'. This album's quality is in the class of 'South' but not quite up to the standard of 'Oyster and 'Glow Stars.' Well worth a listen nonetheless.

The first two albums by Buffalo Tom showed that the Massachusetts trio had studied its heroes (Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du), learned their guitar-rock vocabulary, and mastered the ability to put it across. But the band didn't have much original to add, and although Let Me Come Over and Birdbrain were pleasant listening, they were quickly forgotten. Big Red Letter Day is more dynamic, peeling away the layers of fuzz guitar to reveal acoustic guitar and Bill Janovitz' simple but compelling vocal melodies. The album emphasizes the lyrics, which stand up to the scrutiny, and "Soda Jerk," "Would Not Be Denied," and "Anything That Way" are the best songs the band has written. --Jim DeRogatis

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-06-18

I've got a few thousand albums and this is my favorite. Enuf said.

4 out of 5 stars Comfortable, Straight-Ahead Rock.......2005-06-20

I found this in the used section a few days ago, and have been traveling around with it. This band has a sound kinda like Counting Crows or Gin Blossoms, with maybe a touch of John Mellencamp at times. It's not twang-y roots rock / but does feel kinda indie.

It's versatile, adult-feeling music. The lyrics speak a lot about the messiness of life, and the regrets we try to let go of. I find it likeable.

The vocals can be kinda raspy at times, and I was tempted to ding it for that and give it 3 stars... but I decided 4 is supportable.

4 out of 5 stars "The moon was full your whisky sour".......2004-05-02

I bought Big Red Letter Day back in the early 1990s during my first year in college and it was one of my most played CDs at the time. Playing it now 11 years later, it still sounds great. Even though it was classified as "alternative" with "Sodajerk" getting decent play on MTV's 120 Minutes during its release, it is really just good, solid rock 'n roll with some Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. influence and a smidgen of country sound here and there. No song jumps out on this album, but there is nothing weak here either. It is a good CD to pop in and hit "repeat all."

Buffalo Tom was a trio formed in 1986 in Massachusetts who built up a following with fuzz-laden guitars, effervescent melodies and muscle-building tours. Big Red Letter Day was the band's major label debut. The band made a little news when a magazine that had a regular "Cute Band Alert" section, changed the title to "Cute Drummer Alert" especially for BT drummer Tom Maginnis (I think the other two guys are cute, too). Guitarist Bill Janovitz does most of the vocal duties. He has a good, no nonsense rock 'n roll voice. Bassist Chris Colbourne provides vocals on "My Responsibility" and "Late at Night," seemingly about troubled fatherhood. These songs are a little less testosterone-driven. Colbourne does not have a very strong voice but the songs are catchy. I still find myself humming "Late at Night." Some songs are a little slower than others, but there are no true ballads here. Other tracks just rock like "Tree House" that ends with some gospel singing by the Water Sisters. Big Red Letter Day is a solid CD that has aged very well.

5 out of 5 stars Very good all around.......2003-08-17

Even though there songs have been used on commercials, people still don't who this group is. And that is a shame. There light rock sounds are calming. I love this album.

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem.......2002-01-26

The kiss of death for Buffalo Tom might have been getting stuck with the "alternative" label. Because to call them "alternative" was to deny them the mass audience they so richly deserved.

Buffalo Tom, not a guy but a Boston-based trio, skillfully transformed traditional song styles into idiosyncratic rockers and electric ballads, in the same way that REM transformed "New Southern Rock" into something much more. Forget the comparisons to Dinosaur Jr.: this band, and Big Red Letter Day, are successful on their own terms.

Produced by the Robb Brothers, responsible for producing hitmakers like Neil Diamond, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, the Bay City Rollers and fellow-Bostonians the Lemonheads, the CD is probably Buffalo Tom's most accessible, featuring deceptively simple melodies, dynamic guitars, and some of the band's best lyrics.

The CD opens with the confident "Sodajerk", which features the Water Sisters (Rolling Stones) and the immortal opening lines: "Watch an eyeball/take a free fall/At the mention of a name/In its socket/Like a rocket/It rises just the same."

Other standouts include "My Responsibility" (and the great lyrics, "I don't like that joke, and I don't want to smell like smoke"), "Torch Singer" and the rocking "Tree House" and "Dry Land".

Overlooked in its day, Big Red Letter Day is an easy gem that's well deserving of your hard-earned dollars.

I bought this CD for my three year old about a year ago and she just loves it. Even my husband and I enjoy it. "Dog House Party" and "Big Big Big Red Dog" are really catchy sing-along songs. Other songs reinforce ideas of friendship and liking who you are. I'd definetly recommend this for any Clifford fan.

2 out of 5 stars Not so fantastic.......2007-05-18

We own several of The Wiggles CDs--this one is our least favorite and as such, we don't play it much. There are a couple of really bad songs (i.e. "I'm a Cow") which are so hard to hear I have to skip past them...consider a different one by The Wiggles.

4 out of 5 stars Good Wiggles CD.......2007-05-15

My 23 month old daughter LOVES the Wiggles. If you have The Big Red Car DVD like my daughter does, this CD is a great comliment to it! The songs are very catchy and upbeat. If your child likes The Wiggles, loves to sing and or dance, this is the perfect CD for you! I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad re-release of Dance Party.......2006-08-14

Loses a star for two bad remakes and one annoying new song--possibly their worst ever--but the other new song is great, and the core material is classic Wiggles, which earns them a solid four stars.

First, the only difference between most of the songs found on this CD and on DANCE PARTY is that they have been remastered (NOT rerecorded). They are EXACTLY the same songs, exceptions noted, just better sound quality. Probably not worth the buy for this reason alone, as the quality wasn't awful to begin with. But it is a noticable boost in volume, at least on my copy.

One of the exceptions to the no re-recording rule is the one song that was performed by Captain Feathersword; DANCE PARTY was recorded prior to Paul Paddick joining the cast as the friendly pirate, so the vocals were performed by the man who then filled the pirate pants: Anthony Field.

Personally, although I adore Paul Paddick, I find the original version of "Nicky Nacky Nocky Noo" far superior. Not through any fault of the Good Captain; the new arrangements and heavy-handed background vocals are overwhelming and take away from the charm of the original. Still a fun song, though.

EDIT: My bad--my original review did not note that "Can You (Point Your Fingers And Do The Twist)" is also a remake; it's not a recent remake, as far as I can tell; it's the same version they've been using on the TV shows for a few years now.

**These are the only songs from the original CD to have been re-recorded.**

As for additional songs found on this CD compared to the original:

A remake of "Our Boat Is Rocking On the Sea":
The original "Our Boat Is Rocking on the Sea", sung primarily by Greg Page et al, is light years better than the seemingly-truncated (though it clocks in at 5 seconds longer), Captain-helmed version--with its inferior arrangement and slowed-down tempo--found on this CD. This song wasn't on the DANCE PARTY CD to begin with, but was on the North American release of YUMMY YUMMY (and was, I believe, performed by Paul Paddick in that version as well). The new version does reflect the female accompaniment in the original found on the DANCE PARTY video (but primarily performed by Anthony Field--and that version, as far as I know, does not appear on any CD). Still, the original YUMMY YUMMY version kicks, while this new one just kinda cruises. They took the punch out of it in the remake. Definitely refer to YUMMY YUMMY for the best version of this song.

Two brand-new songs:
The two new songs are hit and miss. "I Want to Wear The Jacket" is almost hilariously bad, but "Sorry Again" is cute and catchy. Both are performed by Captain Feathersword.

Otherwise, it's the same CD, with the song order rearranged, and a couple of very short spoken word pieces ("Bouncing Ball" and "My Holiday At the Beach") removed. Not worth the price for one good new song if you already have DANCE PARTY; buy the new song(s) online if your child insists you must and reburn your DANCE PARTY with it/them added.

Yet. If you don't have DANCE PARTY, this is still a fantastic CD, and well worth the price.

As for the Wiggles being crass and greedy, I don't think that is the case at all. They are simply repackaging and updating their catalogue (done all the time in the entrtainment biz) for a new generation of fans to coincide with their fifteenth anniversary. They did something similar with some of their other work around their ten-year mark, if I'm not mistaken. If you've seen the original DANCE PARTY video, you can see why they felt the need to release a new video (and accompanying CD); saying the production values are nonexistent would be an overstatement. It's almost charmingly low-quality (we call it old-old-school); heck, the big red car was made out of cardboard and Anthony was still sporting a green shirt, often inexplicably a polo shirt. WAKE UP JEFF! was similarly re-released as WIGGLE AROUND THE CLOCK recently, with the same type of updates, yet without the accompanying CD (not yet, anyway). If I were them, I'd re-release them, too.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2006-05-07

This is a remake of Dance Party but is not exactly the same. Better technology and backup singers give this album a slightly different sound and makes this one better. I have both "The Big Red Car" and "Here Comes the Big Red Car" and love both of them, but would recommend this one because of its higher quality sound.

2 out of 5 stars Only a Few New Songs--Parents Beware!.......2006-01-12

Apparently, as the Wiggles become more famous, they are also becoming greedy and more crass. A glance at the titles reveals that almost all of these songs come from the album, "Dance Party", (called "Big Red Car" in Australia) which has already been released on CD and was one of the Wiggles' first albums.

Maybe there are 3 or 4 new songs at most. The original album is pretty good as far as the Wiggles go, so if you don't have "Dance Party", it's not a bad choice. But chances are you and your kids have heard most of these songs before, and already own them, too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

You wouldn't know it to look at her, but bluegrass firebrand Mollie O'Brien has a dirt road voice--robust and soulful, not remotely high and lonesome. Big Red Sun, a collection of blues and country-blues tunes, should surprise those who've followed her. The band, paced by the bubbly electric and slide work of Nick Forster, lays down steady folk blues, and even dabbles in Cajun and tough Magic Sam soul. The most striking performance, Steve Goodman's "Looking For Trouble," features just acoustic guitar, accordion, and O'Brien's slow- burning voice. The pieces are in place for a great interpretive work-- including a sumptuous version of Lucinda Williams's "Big Red Sun Blues" plus John Hiatt and Randy Newman covers--but the result is closer to an unexceptional Bonnie Raitt offering. Good, but not quite a revelation. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful blues, folk, and pop.......2002-12-02

Evidently, other fans know Mollie O'Brien from her bluegrass collaborations with her brother Tim. I bought this CD on a whim after hearing her sing on Garrison Keilor's Prairie Home Companion. She has good range, and her voice is strong, smooth, and forceful. I chose this album because I knew some of the songs by other artists and some of the reviews here on Amazon. None are original songs, but a few are traditionals arranged by O'Brien. She has picked a wonderful set of underappreciated gems written by some of our most talented songwriters. Aside from the wonderful recordings, I love the reminders about some of my musical favorites. These are great songs with great lyrics, performed wonderfully by O'Brien and her backing musicians.

The first song, "In my girlish days" is a 20s era blues piece written by Memphis Minnie, which let me know right away that I was going to love the album. It's a simple, foot-tapping acoustic arrangement featuring guitar and harmonica. Maria Muldaur covered it recently on "Richland Woman Blues," which I love. I won't try to choose which version I prefer.

A few more songs just tear me up.
On "No ash will burn," O'Brien sustains notes and bends them like a methodical blues guitarist. The arrangement features a simple, soulful electric lead guitar, with bass and drums.

"Love like blood" (by John Hiatt) and "Big Red Sun Blues" (by Lucinda Williams)are hear-wrenching songs about love (as deep as it gets) and love gone stale that O'Brien belts out smoothly, clearly, and convincingly. On "Love Like Blood," she has the strength and conviction of Janis Joplin without the rough edges. I don't know much of Hiatt's work, but look for the tribute album "Rolling into Memphis" which got remaindered and is worth far more than the discount price.
"Big red sun blues" is softer, sadder, with vocal character described above ("no ash will burn") and a lovely bluesy accordian in its arrangement. Williams is someone whose songwriting I love, but whose vocals I just can't listen to. It's always good to find someone else recording her songs.

"Looking for trouble" is a Steve Goodman song from one of my favorite albums (Jessie's Jig), though I never paid this song much attention. Goodman sang it halfway tongue in cheek, but O'Brien sings it like a near tragedy and grabs your attention. It is pretty, simple, with perfect acoustic guitar arrangement and haunting background Hammond B3 organ. Be careful about drinking and lying - they'll suck you in! And fall in love? You never knew what sucked-in meant!

"Gambling man" is a warning about loving someone beyond even his mother's help. Another simple but lovely blues acoustic guitar arrangement.

A few other songs are folksy blues toe-tappers ("Eleezah," by John Magnie; "Little Baby," by Willie Dixon; "Brown-eyed handsome man," by Chuck Berry; "No hidin' place," trad. gospel). These don't catch me the way the others do, but that's just me.

The album closes out with "Rollin" by Randy Newman. A soft, easy-going reminder that whatever troubles we've had, we can let ourselves be. Another acoustic number. I don't know if Randy Newman sings this with his TM sarcasm, but O'Brien sings it in complete sincerity.

"never thought I'd make it but I always knew, somehow, that I'm all right now . . . rollin, rolling, I'm rollin, I ain't gonna worry no more. . . . "

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mix of guitar and vocals.......2001-07-26

One of the first CDs I've listened to and loved every track! Great variety of songs from Mollie and her band, with crystal clear vocals alternating with clever guitar patterns. My favourite tracks - Looking for Trouble and No Ash Will Burn.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2000-03-17

This is one CD thats gets our whole family up and DANCING! We all just love it! Mollie's voice is unbelievably smooth and beautiful. Track after track will have you up and dancing! This is one of those rare CDs that is solid from start to finish. WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Mollie, Mollie, I love you.......2000-02-08

Truly a briliant recording! "Big Red Sun" comes very close both in singing quality and song selection to Linda Ronstadt's 1974 "Heart Like a Wheel." To me, that's about as good as it gets.
