This is a fantastic CD, exemplifying what can be expected of this group. It mixes wonderful rhythm, lively vocals, and great songwriting. Oh, and the sound of the acoustic guitar on this one is wonderful. Highly recommended!!

Since their last studio album, the decent but disappointing "Running Horse", Poco have released three live albums-- "Keeping The Legend Alive" (which includes both CD and DVD versions in one package), "The Last Roundup" (a "lost" Poco album originally recorded in the '70s, then shelved by their label and never released), and now, "Bareback". I'm a long time "Poconut" and each of those albums is excellent in its own way. But this one is destined to be among my all-time favorites.

The perfomance is almost entirely acoustic. Recorded "live in the studio" (before a small audience) with no overdubs or enhancements, there is a purity and honesty to this music that is rarely found today, and in many ways relates back to their early days. But really, it's unlike anything they've ever done before. The music is a mixture of old and new, including a couple of songs I've never heard before. But everything here has a freshness that makes it as enjoyable to hear as if you had never heard any of it before. It's obvious that they had fun doing this, and there is an obvious connection with the small but appreciative audience. The last cut is the old Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield classic, "On The Way Home". I've heard and loved the Springfield's version a milllion times, and I've heard Neil play it solo in different versions over the years. But never have I enjoyed any version of the song more than this one. Just wish it was longer-- it always ends too soon. Then after a few seconds of silence, stay tuned for the infamous "rabbit joke", which despite rumors to the contrary, is darned funny!

Overall, this album is a true joy to listen to. If you love Poco, and especially if you love earlier Poco, you absolutely must have this. Even if you don't love Poco but just love good music, you still should have this. If you don't absolutely love it, then you must surely be comatose. Buy it! Now!

having seen poco three times this year in concert, i must say that they are just superb. many bands, as they age, rely on new members, old material and they often sound tired and lame. not poco, they are brilliant. they have aged well, like a fine wine. the new material is great. they have a huge catalogue of older material from wich to draw. their concerts are events not to be missed. this new album is very close to the current concert lineup. the 3 part harmonies are great. rusty young's virtuosity is amazing: mandolin, electric and acoustic guitars, dobro, lap steel, pedal steel. and he is brillaint on each instrument. paul cotton's guitar style is compact and crunchy with tasty little fills throughout. jack sundrud is a superb bassist, guitarist and he has a great vioce. i have his latest solo album "by my own hand" and it is great. george lawrence was integrated into the band to replace george grantham who had to depart due to health issues. george lawrence is one heck of a drummer. he has energy to burn. this is one of the tightest bands you will ever see and this virtuosity comes through on "bareback at big sky". these guys are going on 38 years together. i had 2 friends attend a concert in sept. they are hooked. i have met the band members several times. they are very nice people, and this quality comes through their music. get this album, you will not be disappointed. this is feel good music performed at a high level of excellence.

A Poconut's (nearly) Unbiased Review.......2006-01-11

As an admitted "poconut" who owns most of this venerable band's output on CD, DVD, and vinyl, my aim in this review is to offer an honest assessment of this particular release to music fans who may only have a passing (or perhaps complete) lack of familiarity with the group.

This is actually my first music review, and I felt compelled to choose this particular recording as it is truly unique in the Poco catalogue.

First off, it is the third (and latest) in a string of live recordings recently released by the band, the others being "The Last Roundup" and "Keeping the Legend Alive" CD/DVD combo. As mentioned in nearly every other review, the band is mostly "unplugged" here, which is the primary distinction of this recording. The material on this CD also benefits in no small measure from a tangibly comfortable setting in beautiful Bozeman, Montanna. An additional bonus is that the performance venue (Big Sky High Studio), as the name implies, enabled "one stop shopping" in the final mixdown and production. The result is a wonderfully produced live recording that really showcases the band's traditional strengths of musicianship and vocal harmony.

My first listen took place in a well-known chain bookstore's featured listening station. I stood there for over half an hour with the headphones on, sampling every track. This initial exposure engendered more of a reaction than an assessment: I smiled! The arrangements of each song, both old favorites and newer compositions, are beautifully suited to the pared-down sound. And though the band is playing mostly acoustic, this does not mean less complex music--in fact, "old guard" fans may be a little startled (in a good way) with the treatment familiar songs get here. Everything from the unexpectedly slinky bass line a la Jack Sundrud on "Barbados" to less familiar key signatures and the multi-instrumental contributions of original member Rusty Young are a pure delight.

With the headphones on, I was pleasantly captivated with the interplay of the vocal arrangements along with acoustic, lap/slide and steel guitars; mandolin, dobro, tambourine, bongos (?!), et al. In fact, though the sound is decidedly stripped of amplification, I find this music sounds fantastic played loud, like a Who album!

Replacing founding member George Grantham on drums (who continues to recover from a stroke suffered during a live performance) is George Lawrence. Longtime fans will note the sonic difference--Mr. Lawrence's percussion is lower and "fatter"; that is to say, more rock oriented, and it sounds great. POCO sounds fantastic with either drummer--Grantham's more "countrified" style (and sorely missed vocal harmonies--please get well George!)or the heavier sound of Lawrence.

I've had this disc in my car for weeks now, feeding it back into my CD player again and again. Without being able to identify any tangible reason, for me the music keeps growing on me; so much so that I would easily place it on my perosnal "10 best list" of recent releases. Casual listners riding in the car, not all that familiar with the band, have made comments like "that's cool stuff--who is that?" And I'm happy to report: POCO!

Particular standout tracks for me include the bluesy "Cajoun Moon" (POCO has always made remarkable presentation of J.J. Cale songs, especially the beautiful "Magnolia"); the closer "Bareback" (written by longtime member Paul Cotton, who is in great form) and a fantastic rendition of Neil Young's "On the Way Home" (from his Buffalo Springfield days) as an encore.

In sum, this is a really fine and quietly thrilling recording. I am sure it will please most music fans willing to purchase a CD that will probably see very little support from commercial radio outside of XM and the like, which is too bad. For POCO fans, I would be tempted to give it 5 stars because I think it could be considered an essential purchase for collectors; for popular music at large, 4 stars. It's not Abbey Road, Beggars Banquet or Born to Run, but it sure is great. Enjoy it!

Postcript: I also highly recommend the aforementioned CD/DVD combo, "Keeping the Legend Alive" that features founding member Richie Furay reunited with the band. The performance is fantastic, with Furay having lost nothing of his gorgeous tenor and energy that has distinguished some of the best of the country-rock genre for decades.

Captures the band's lyricism and upbeat approach.......2005-10-26

Playing Time - 72:35 -- "Bareback at Big Sky" was recorded live in April, 2005 in Bozeman, Montana. Long gone are guys like Richie Furay, Jim Messina and George Grantham who first established Poco's innovative country rock sound in Los Angeles back in the early-1970s. However, Rusty Young (steel, mandolin, dobro, vocals) was one of the original members. Paul Cotton (guitar, vocals) joined the band in the 70s. Rusty, Paul and their bandmates are keeping Poco's warm, pleasant, crisp music alive that is characterized by solid arrangements and vocal harmony. Joining Young and Cotton are Jack Sundrud (bass, vocals) and George Lawrence (percussion). "Big Dave" David Goodwin plays harmonica on J.J. Cale's bluesy "Cajun Moon," always a crowd-pleaser.

"Bareback at the Big Sky" captures the band's lyricism and upbeat approach. The CD is full of wonderful moments and great songs, largely written by Cotton, Young and Sundrud. "Every Time I Hear that Train" presents an analogy about a signal in the night running through Paul's heart. Largely unplugged, songs like "Under the Gun" and "Barbados" are given musical facelifts with more laid-back acoustic sensibilites.

"Midnight Rain" has some tantalizing pedal steel work by Young. On a few other cuts, I found myself wishing that his mandolin and dobro were a little more prominent in the mix like Cotton's guitar. Besides the cover from J.J. Cale, others are from Timothy Schmit/Robbin Thompson ("Find Out in Time"), and Neil Young ("On the Way Home"). "Find Out in Time" was arranged with Poco's vocal trio. "On the Way Home" is a signature closing tune since the 1960s, as they did in Poco's precursor band, Buffalo Springfield.

Doing a live album was also wise to demonstrate that they still pull in large and dedicated audiences full of Poconuts. The venue was the Goodwin Ranch, a beautiful lodge at the base of the Bridger Mountains. At 72 minutes, this album is filled to the brim with Poco's spellbinding and more acoustic country rock sound and even, by request of an audience member, their rabbit joke to close the project. One has to wonder if the name of this South London trio has anything to do with Sam Peckinpah's bloody pastorale Straw Dogs. As with Peckinpah's 1971 film, the idyllic and malevolent walk hand in tightly clenched hand. The group, which consists of a woman who goes by the name of Piano; her ex-husband (and, apparently, a very obscure former Sex Pistol), Andy; and his daughter (by another woman), Lily. Musically, this slanted clan creates a sound that hearkens back to classic Brit-folk of the Fairport Convention persuasion; from the stately opening track, "Lucky Break," it's apparent the Hank Dogs do what they do with true skill. The second song, "18 Dogs," indicates they aren't interested in simply blending pretty sounds and pleasant notions. Here the singer eyes strangers approaching her remote home, where a pack of dogs and an M16 await the menacing intruders. "I'll take the greatest of pleasure in watching you torn limb from limb," Piano intones with the dispassion one might bring to a chat about the weather. That's hardly the last disquieting moment on this eye-opening entrée. It's rare when a group comes along that's capable of both enriching and undermining a genre of music. Hauntingingly beautful. One of my top 25 albums of ALL genres. Not sure what this band wasn't huge - i think they broke in a bit before the folk explosion. There are not amny albums I play over and over again - this is one.

You will not be disappointed. If you like folk, and especially English Folk, or have ever thought that you might be interested in any sort of folk...do yourself a favor and make the plunge. The melodies, the voices, and the impeccable guitars are a true delight. I thank God that this comes in CD format because otherwise I would have burned a hole in any vinyl version! A deal at twice the price. I just wish they would have put out more CD's, but this one, and "Half Smile" are worth the wait.

Very pretty........2005-10-21

Some lovely sounds and beautiful female voices with great guitar. But if you are curiosity buying then go for their second album HALF SMILE which is fantastic with every track a corker and sees them more finely tuned.

Folk Rock That Bites!.......2003-03-03

Folk music often gets a bad name because it emphasizes lyrical profundity over musicianship and frequently comes off as quite wimpy. No such problem with The Hankdogs' "Bareback," which is as lyrically tough as any folk album ever recorded. The song "18 Dogs" for example fantasizes about the viscious killing of strangers who are up to no good. Lead singer and songwriter Piano (now THERE's an original name) compliments her strong vocals with decent songs and lyrics that will keep you on your toes. The highlights include the opening "Lucky Break," the gorgeous yet haunting "I'm an Angel," and "One From Your Head." The one drawback is that at 14 songs and nearly an hour of running time it can wear the listener out.

Overall, an eye opening album from a band that has revitalized the folk rock form.

Mesmerizing!.......2002-12-10

I first heard several selections on World Cafe Program on my local public radio station and was captivated. I bought the CD on a whim and have practically worn it out.

The entire CD is mesmerizing, haunting and addictive. I have bought it and recommended it several people. The vocals are amazing and the lyrics are poetic. Its hard to imagine that there are only three people in the group, the sound is so lush.

If you like Mazzy Star, the Sundays, the Cowboy Junkies or are just a fan of folk music, you should definitely give this a try. Play it though entirely and just try not to hit repeat!

Great stuff from an underappreciated band.......2005-08-13

Walt Mink were the Big Star of the '90s: brilliant songwriters, crack musicians, and screwed over by two major labels and a record buying public whose fascination with three-chord grunge blinded them to a whole lot of other good stuff.

On this, their second major label disc, the band makes strides forward in all areas of playing. There are the usual heavy and melodic power-pop tunes ("Subway"), some stonerish stuff ("SHine," with its intricate modal groove) and a few acoustic tunes, notably the stunning "Tree in Orange," where John Kimbrough demonstrates the same mastery of the acoustic guitar as he does of the electric. Thematically, the disc covers Kimbrough's usual concerns: lost love, environemntal degradation, the treachery of familial and friend relationship,s and of course lust.

WAlt Mink's supreme gift is that their technical chops are as good as their songwriting. Kimbrough is a God of a guitar player who mixes metal intricacy with punk energy. Candace Belanoff is a chick bass player whose influences seem more Motown and funk than rock, giving these tunes deep and solid grooves. She can actually doa whole lot more than play three-note basslines and pout. And drummer Joey Waronker-- who now records and tours with Beck-- is all over the stylistic map here.

Those interested in Walt Mink will also enjoy their other discs. As of Fall 2005, the good news is that a Walt Mink documentary film is being prepared, and the early demos are now available (remastered by John K.) on CD! The demos will help finance the documentary.

More high-quality work.......2003-07-02

The quality on all of WM's records is so very high. They always keep things interesting. The opener on this one, "Subway" is a case in point. Listen to how the drummer immitates the sound of a subway car going down the tracks while managing to maintain the groove. It's attention to detail on what is ostensibly a pop song that distinguishes WM from so many other bands. That, and the talent that bursts from every record they make. This seems like WM's power pop record, mostly up tempo, with catchy melodies and music that rocks.

A sidenote: In college I can recall hearing/seeing WM play "Zero Day" live long before it appeared on this record. What a thrill!

Stunning Follow up to Miss Happiness.......2000-01-09

I am rather disappointed that Miss Happiness is not for sale here. People should check that CD out if for no other reason that to hear Walt Minks cover of the Nick Drake masterpiece Pink Moon. I saw John Kimborough do a solo of Pink Moon and was blown away....but back to the Bareback Ride Rather icky back cover:P Loved the content. It took a little while to get past the difference in the styles between Miss Happiness and this one. But it showed an immense growth. Shine is great as well as Subway. Sunnymede is an amazing acoustic piece and the gentle beauty of Tree in Orange was used in some movie....buy it live it love it

John Kimbrough was smashing pumkins before before billy corgan -- without the incessant hooks. A more diverse collection than Miss Happiness, and almost as good.

I have been looking for this CD since I finally got rid of all my vinyl records. The song Rio De Janeiro Blue was one of the most popular songs of the 70's. Richard Torrance has a great classic voice and I sure would like to hear these songs again.

The Last From The Best.......2004-04-30

I played with Fred way back in the 70s and into the 80s. At first I thought he was a drummer, and I guess he was. But he and I started doing different kinds of music, staying up all night with a Teac 4 track reel to reel and...he was so much more than a drummer! Who knew?

This is a showcase of all the things Fred learned to do over the years, and of all the things he had inside him, and of his dreams, his regrets, his hopes and his life out there in the desert. It's good. Buy one and learn a little something about Fred and maybe even more about yourself.

You are missed, Fred Drake.

Music that is to be treasured...and shared with friends.......2002-09-15

"I used to dream about this" is one of the most moving songs that I have ever heard. And his rendition of "I'm so lonsesome I could cry" will surely bring tears to your eyes. My favorite tract is "I could be wrong"

If you appreciate Lennon, Pink Floyd, Rundgren, McCartney as well as a host of other greats, you'll appreciate this music. If you don't appreciate great talent...stick to the boy bands.

fred drake, multi-instrument extrordinaire, drummer for earthlings?, co-conspirator with josh homme on his desert sessions recordings, producer, engineer, etc etc etc... has passed away recently. this album was his last statement, and it is absolutely beautiful. this is funeral music at it's best, sad, beautiful, inspiring....

BUY THIS CD - Blinding Brilliant Talent.......2002-03-28

Fred Drake is an amazingly gifted musician who not only played every single instrument on this CD put also mixed and engineered the whole thing. His sounds span a wide range of styles, all hauntingly beautiful. What a genius! He's worked with the likes of Dave Grohl, (Foo Fighters) and Dan Lanois (Robbie Robertson, Brian Eno, Bob Dylan, etc.) He is a hidden gem in the desert who has really given the world a treasured gift from the depths of his heart. Don't just BUY THIS CD, but buy one for yourself and another to give to your best friend, they'll love you forever if you do. Like a breathe of fresh, clean air shimmering with the magic found in the desert. Great to hear someone who's actually original and creative in these days of mcpop music.

One of the Best Loved cds in my collection.......2002-02-21

This is a very beautiful and VERY moving cd.
I really like 'I used to dream about it'. Its the second track.
It reminds of what it must be like to be at a prom.
That song would play and half the people would be completely in love with the night, and the other half wants to blow the world away. I am half and half when I hear it.

Quality melodic hard rock.......2006-06-23

I don't know that New York band Wild Horses (not to be confused with the UK band of the same name) qualifies as an all-star group, since Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson is the only immediately recognizable member, but they are a pretty decent melodic hard rock band.

The band's 1991 album Bareback, until recently their only release, is equal parts Warrant and Cinderella. It is fairly straightforward hard rock music, with some hair metal and Southern rock elements added to the mix. The musicianship is top notch, and former Shout vocalist John Levesque gives a very solid performance. Closing the album with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Tell Me Something Good" was a nice touch, and not what you'd expect from a band in this genre.

While I wouldn't call Bareback a must-have album, it is still well worth checking out if you're a fan of this kind of music.

This is a Hard Rock band which features: Jeff Pilson (Dokken fame)on Bass (Chris Lester listed as the group's official bassist), James Kottack (Kingdom Come, Krunk, Warrant, and currently with Scorpions) on drums, and Rick Steier (Kingdom Come, Warrant) on guitar and lead singer: John Levesque. The band folded shortly after release in 1991, 1992. In 2003 Wild Horses would return with the same line-up that recorded "Bareback" (with Pilson on bass once again), and release a new album titled "Dead Ahead" on Z Records
