The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song getscaught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.Note that the two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

If you want to live the Dream, this CD will always be there..........2007-06-16
I love this CD...it takes me right through all the emotions and action of the movie. Nothing is left out, all of my favorites are included even the less commercial cuts like Eddie Murphy's "Jimmy Got Soul" which gives the CD a well rounded feel.
Great Movie, Even Better MUSIC..........2007-06-16
of course the showstopper "and i am tellin u (im not going)" is my favourite song. im only 23 and im familiar with the original version performed by jennifer holiday. i love the original but to me J-Hud Killed it!!!! i perfered her version just because it was heartfelt and she performed it OUTSTANDINGLY in the movie. i cried in the theaters when she performed it... STANDING OVATION!!!!
my other favourite track is "i meant you no harm/jimmy's rap". i love the beginning of the song. eddie murphy SANG that song. then it threw me off when he started rappin. that rap was too funny!
all the other songs were great but here are my joints:
"move"
"one night only" (original)
"one night only" (Disco) (my favourite of the 2)
"cadillac car"
"I want you baby"
"dreamgirls"
this does not have all the songs on the movie. you have to purchase the deluxe edition of get "heavy" 'effie sing my song" and more...
this is probably my favourite SDTK i own and i definantly reccomend this SDTK to anyone... and the movie is as good and the songs!!!
I love it....I dooooo!.......2007-06-13

Pleasant backdrop .......2006-01-10
I have been a reader of the Aubrey Maturin Novels for 8 years (only two a year for dramatic suspense) and while I am a huge fan of Patrick O'Brian's writing, I find that with the addition of the music he scored his work to, I stand in awe. The music is well grounded to the situations and feelings in the book. Either Mr. O'Brian was a very well rounded, or he did his homework.
The CD is a wonderful insight to the author, and the characters he created. Pour a glass of claret, listen to the cd, read the books...
but pay no heed to Killick's "scrape, scrape , scrape..never a song you could dance to.."

From the heartbreak harmonies of the ballads to the blitzkrieg instrumental breakdowns, the veteran Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver touch all the bluegrass bases on this follow-up to the more spiritually-focused You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper. Not that this secular album is lacking in inspirational material, as a revival of Leon Payne's "The Selfishness in Man" attests. There's also an otherworldly dimension to "The Phone Call," which tries to heal a fractured father-son relationship. Lawson sings lead on that one, and sounds close to the classic country of George Jones on the title track (where a family portrait fails to show the whole picture), though the younger, higher voice of Jamie Dailey handles most of the other leads. As the album's centerpiece, the instrumental "Tulsa Turn-a-Round" shines the spotlight on the bandleader's lickety-split mandolin. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
One of Doyle's Best.......2007-05-14
Fantastic..........2007-05-12
A bit disappointing.......2007-05-07
Another fine release from Doyle & Quicksilver.......2007-03-29
Besides singing lead and harmony vocals, Lawson plays mandolin, guitar and dojo on this project. Quicksilver is Jamie Dailey (guitar, vocals), Darren Beachley (bass, vocals), Terry Baucom (banjo), and Mike Hartgrove (fiddle). Jimmy Edmonds plays bass and some understated fiddle on "Whatever Happened To Us" (that some may recall was done years ago by George Jones and Tammy Wynette). Instrumentally, each song on this album has been given its own unique string treatment. Offering a varied set of both driving bluegrass and acoustic country selections, you'll hear a rawboned arrangement of just two guitars and two vocalists on "Can You Hear Me Now." Perhaps it was a subconscious voice that led them to such a lean treatment for the haunting song (written by Dixie & Tom T. Hall with Johnny Williams). I don't think an additional full-length "Retro 1938" rendition was needed right afterwards to recreate the scratchy sound of an old 78rpm record. Sound and recording quality have come a long way during the last century, and a little snippet of that effect creates a nice mood but why overdo it? The album's only instrumental, a fiery "Tulsa Turn-A-Round," was written by Lawson.
Of the twelve tracks, only half include Terry Baucom's tasteful and formidable banjo playing. I remember the old days when Doyle's secular albums were all bluegrass, but a recent approach for many bands is to also present slower country songs (written by the likes of Harley & Aaron Allen, Leon Payne, Buddy Cannon/Bill Anderson/Don Miller, Donny Kees, and the Halls) that create an entirely different feeling. A couple songs have been previously released by George Jones. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this, especially if you're targeting an audience that likes both kinds of music. Rounder Records' desire to cross-market, and the band's desire to maximize airplay and sales are probably some reasons.
The two songs featuring Lawson's lead vocals, "The Phone Call" and "More Behind The Picture Than the Wall" minimize the instrumental accompaniment and maximize spine-tingling choruses with Beachley's tenor and Dailey's high baritone. "Ocean of Teardrops" is a fine hard-driving song in the key of B that features Beachley's lead with two harmonies below. Written by Ron Spears, it captures a classic bluegrass theme in a new contemporary setting. Other songs (Mississippi River Let Your Water Flow, Just Loving You) have arrangements that call for Beachley and Dailey to switch lead vocalizing. The former song, while more uptempo, recalls a folk/gospel number (Mighty Mississippi) from the old original Quicksilver sound of the early 1980s. On this current project, three songs were written by Dailey and Lawson, who have collaborated on about 34 numbers together during the past eight years.
Dailey has an exquisite voice and soaring range that equally delivers the goods on a slower ballad (e.g. The Selfishness in Man), a moderate lonesome ¾-time piece (e.g. When the Blues are Movin' In), and a fast burner (e.g. Sadie's Got Her New Dress On). This is a real testament to the young man who plans to leave Doyle's band at the end of 2007 to form his own group. If that's not somewhat of a blow to Doyle Lawson, then I'm sure he was also disappointed when Baucom and Hartgrove announced they're also moving on to other endeavors. Replacements (Chris Warner, Alan Johnson) have already been found for them. Replacing Dailey will be more problematic, but I'm sure that singers are already in training to fill his shoes. Lawson will continue rolling with the punches, get on with life, and keep on producing some of the finest bluegrass and gospel music available today. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Lost Theremin Album
Manufacturer: Bridge Records, Inc. ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000KJTGNI Release Date: 2006-12-26 |
Product Description
Long regarded as "The Queen of the Theremin," Clara Rockmore's virtuosity as the world's leading exponent of the theremin, was commonly acknowledged during her long and successful career. Intimately involved with Leon Theremin in the development of the instrument, Clara Rockmore's career as a thereminist had her performing with major orchestras and with her sister, the legendary pianist, Nadia Reisenberg. The Rockmore/Reisenberg duo is heard on this CD in 13 never-before released tracks, recorded in 1975. Also heard here are three tracks with the accompaniment of a cello ensemble, and one with the accompaniment of the much admired Argentine composer/guitarist, Jorge Morel. This recording comes with a booklet which includes numerous historic photographs of the performers, as well as excerpts from an interview conducted by Robert Sherman, in which his mother, Nadia Reisenberg; his aunt, Clara Rockmore; and the electronic pioneer Robert Moog discuss their lives and the background of their involvement with the theremin and its creator, Leon Theremin.Customer Reviews:
Clara Rockmore Rocks!.......2007-05-18
Amazing Album.......2007-03-22
The booklet that comes along with the CD is quite funny and very loving as it's written by Clara's nephew/Nadia's son who brought this gem to life.
This is definitely a CD to add to the collection.
Lost, but still priceless.......2007-03-03
In keeping with her style, all the material on this CD is classical in nature, often somber or serious in tone. And while these recordings were made long after her heyday, the performances are still top rate examples of Theremin playing and her discipline and passion for the material is clearly undiminished by time.
Her few earlier recordings had long been an inspiration to several generations of Thereminists. This set of recordings enlarges the available corpus of her work tremendously. Let us hope it inspires as many new musicians as the first round!

Who could dance with such exquisite feeling
There was never a sound
For miles around
Save of fly-buttons hitting the ceiling.
The music on this CD is along the same lines. Exquisite.
As with volume 1, this is not music that thunders or trumpets. No, it is relaxing, perfect for listening to whilst reading a book by Patrick O'Brian or for just contemplating the way of the world.
Or in my case, for background music at a dinner party. It does not intrude, but floats the mind on its currents, gently wafting thoughts and conversations along.
The liner notes are long, comprehensive, and a positive delight for afficionados of Aubrey and Maturin.
This is truly a musical evening with the captain, and I am listening to it now, imagining Jack and Stephen sawing away, Killick outside the keyhole waiting for the perfect moment to bring in the toasted cheese.

Album Description
Doyle Lawson stands as one of the prime architects of modern bluegrass, with his career now spanning four decades. In addition to his achievements as an arranger, mandolin player, vocalist, and bandleader, Lawson is best known for infinitely widening the bluegrass gospel repertoire while ingeniously applying the rigorous precision of gospel harmony to secular songs. In the process, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver have been recognized with four consecutive Vocal Group of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. For his Rounder Records debut, Lawson has assembled a stellar collection that highlights the continuing evolution of his unique vision. Joined by Jamie Dailey (guitar, vocals), Barry Scott (bass, vocals), Jesse Stockman (fiddle), and Terry Baucom (banjo, vocals), Lawson expertly weaves together elements of bluegrass, country, and gospel into a sound only definable as that of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.Customer Reviews:

Sorry ... Not One of DL&Q's best.......2005-08-09
Don't get me wrong, the musicianship and especially the vocals are top notch, but for me this does not make up for the material selected for this release. Go back and listen to some of the soulful and sincere music from their previous releases and then compare it to this album.
I will be going back to listen to Rock My Soul and the older DL&Q material and You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper will probably be a very infrequent visitor in my CD player. If this is how DL&Q is going to be with Rounder, then in my opinion we would all have been better off without that relationship.

Tight, upbeat bluegrass.......2005-05-29
Lawson's fine mandolin and guitar playing are displayed throughout, and having passed the banjo to rejoining bandmate Terry Baucom, the band strikes a balance that keeps the extraordinary vocals front and center. Highlights include the train-whistle lost-love harmonies of "Heartbreak Number Nine," the title-cut's whimsical, folksy style, and the album's sole instrumental, "Rosine" (which is sure to have them dancing at summer festivals!). It's all put together so smoothly, that casual listeners might not catch the incredible heart and craft laid into this recording.
"Lawson weaves all the elements of bluegrass into his sound".......2005-04-27
Entire album is pure bluegrass from start to end...with the following tunes alphabetically and composer to boot:
BLUES FOR MY DARLING (Thomas Glenn Fletcher)
FOUR WALLS (Marvin Moore/George Campbell)
GIRL FROM WEST VIRGINIA (Clyde Denny/Marie Denny/Wade Hill)
GIRL IN THE VALLEY (Jamie Dailey)
HEARTBREAK NUMBER NINE (Barry Scott/Jamie Dailey)

OAK VALLEY GIRL (Robert Gateley/Petr Vacek)

SAVING GRACE (Jerry Salley/Aaron Wilborn)
WHAT AIN'T TO BE, JUST MIGHT HAPPEN (Porter Wagoner)
WHEN I'M KNEE DEEP IN BLUEGRASS (Pete Goble)
YOU GOTTA DIG A LITTLE DEEPER (Carl H. Caldwell)
Pure vocalizing with high tenor harmony ringing in your ears...Lawson's mandolin solos are simply one of a kind, he is the best...one can only hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Rounder Records, Lawson and Quicksilver...Doyle Lawson played on Gibson "Lawson Signature Model" Mandolin, Terry Baucom played on Gibson "Terry Baucom Model" Banjo...they use D'Addarlo Strings exclusively...now this is the way bluegrass should sound...and O Brother this is just the way we like 'em!

This is Chanticleer's 25th recording and also marks its 25th anniversary season. The title refers to the group's wide-ranging repertoire; this disc includes Mexican baroque, traditional American songs in various styles and music commissioned by Chanticleer itself. A program that tries to please everybody is bound to disappoint somebody; however, no one could be disappointed by the singing. The sound of these 12 unaccompanied male voices has an unearthly, celestial beauty and purity; their blend is perfect. Though the singers rarely use vibrato, their intonation is impeccable both together and in solos. Their expressive range and stylistic versatility are incredible: they can project tenderness, pleading, and bitter protest and are equally at home in plainchant, Latin hymns, blues, spirituals, shouts and crooning. Among the highlights are the three opening hymns, settings of two poems of Torquato Tasso by William Hawley, commissioned by Chanticleer, which combine 16th- and 20th-century styles, and the two final folksongs, the last with a stride-style piano accompaniment, making a rousing, exuberant ending. The booklet, in three languages, is well laid-out and informative. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Amazing, ecclectic album.......2007-07-11
To me, the most extraordinary tracks are: The Un-Covered Wagon with it's surreal effects and incredible array of vocal techniques, Willow Weep For Me, Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Michael Lichtenauer's solo floats so effortlessly in a mixed vocal register, I have never heard anything like it!), and Whispers.
Warning: This CD Is Addictive.......2006-12-10
The group sings 17 other songs on this CD, most of them arranged by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's music director. Their version of William Billings' "David's Lamentation," a Sacred Harp work, will blow you away. Another favorite of mine is "Wayfaring' Stranger." There are also two Stephen Foster songs included, "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Camptown Races" as well as Gershwin and other American composers.
There seems to be no kind of music that this group cannot sing better than most other groups. They remind us that there is no musical instrument more beautiful than the human voice.
This CD should be one for the time capsule.
Well worth buying.......2005-08-16
I enjoyed the many styles of music in this CD, but since I tend to listen to CDs straight through as albums, I found it a little disconcerting to go so suddenly from one style to the next (e.g., Mexican Baroque to shape note).
That being said, everything is splendidly, sensitively performed. The renditions of "Whispers" and "The Un-Covered Wagon" are breathtaking. By all means, buy and enjoy this!

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.
This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

Pure, powerful, and soul-stirring, Gospel Radio Gems marks a high point in Doyle Lawson's storied career. The intricate four-part harmonies are in capable hands, backed only by Lawson's delicate acoustic guitar. Recording completely live using just two microphones, Lawson (lead), Barry Scott (tenor), Barry Abernathy (baritone), and Dale Perry (bass) vibrantly recreate the gospel radio shows that graced countless Southern airwaves in days gone by. The one-guitar format gives ample room for the vocals to shine, and they glow with warmth, joy, and passion. Lawson wisely avoids rehashing the standard gospel repertoire. More than an homage to the great gospel quartets of country's past--the Brown's Ferry Four, the Swanee River Boys, and the Jordanaires among them--this album showcases one of the great gospel quartets of country's present. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
