This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

Haunting, Atmospheric, and Beautiful.......2006-06-15

Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

This is by far one of my favorite cd's to listen to at the end of a long day. Especially in the winter months curled up by a fire and a good book.

These Compositions are Great.......2005-03-29

This CD is very enjoyable. The similarity to classical composers from the past only enhances the positive aspects of the finished product. It's sad that people feel the need to review music negatively because a composer sounds similar to a previous composer from the past ... calling them WANNABE'S. New classical music that picks up the former styles is just what it is .. a continuation. I think some people Wannabe critics.

A Handel wannabe?.......2003-07-23

I recall a trip to Key West to see the home of Hemingway. The tour group leader was a Hemingway clone...white beard...tough machismo style..short cropped machise hairdoo. Went down to the pub, Sloppy Joes, it was full of Hemm's... all sporting the beard, the cropped white hair, the macho indifference to the steamy heat.

Now it comes, many moons later I buy this CD... and... what do my ears hear here? It's Georg Friedrich Handel...in the late 20th century. Sometimes it even drifts into Telemann... or a bit-o-Bach. It sure as hell isn't original.

What does composition in this era bring to music? To the art and the Philosphy of music? Sure it sounds ok... but it is imitative. I'd far rather have bet on something John Adams just hatched...or something asian. Omigod...there it goes now into a movement from the Messiah. Middle of summer, and I'm listening to a wannabe Handel copying Messiah.

A really great CD.......2003-07-14

I bought this CD after trying to find the music from Hanibal (like a lot of other people) and did not want to buy a soundtrack. I read the reviews and decided to take a chance - I was not disappointed. There is not one track I do not like, and I liked each one the first time I heard it. I have told several other people about this CD and suggested they get a copy. My only surprise is that I have not heard anything about this talented composer, I shall look out for more of his work. Buy this and you will not be disappointed.

A master of our time!.......2003-01-17

Everthing positive I've read about this CD made me buy it without hearing a note first. In a word: Excellent. Cassidy, a 30ish Irish gent, is truly a classics master. I can't wait to hear his other music. The only piece of his work I had heard before is "Vide Cor Meum" from the Hannibal soundtrack. This is the moving piece from the opera scene (which is messed up on the soundtrack by the alarming "crash" added at the end). Buy this CD, and make an effort to read the cliff notes as it explains the moving story of the Children of Lir.

im confused.......2003-01-11

i dont understand why he writes this kind of music. its good, but in another time maybe. i dont think anyone should really ignore the past 300 years of music. maybe if it was stylized in a more modern fashion---- like arvo part, who takes renaissance music and concepts in the context of now. i think that is more effective than merely looking back and completely adopting that old form.

either way, it sounds good.
