"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

A Gem!.......2002-10-17

This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

The symphonies of American composer Roy Harris (1898-1980) are really essays in the symphonic form rather than the traditionally structured vehicles we're so used to. This allows Harris's ideas to appear more as declarative statements (usually in the brasses), ideas that are subsequently buoyed (or molded) by strings underneath. Motion and mood govern Harris's works--as well as playfulness. The last three movements of Symphony 8 (1962) employ several delightful piano obbligato passages that reveal how much joy there is in his work. Perhaps the real surprise on this disc is Memories of a Child's Sunday, a three-movement work evoking the world of a child at play on a Midwestern Sunday afternoon. The Albany Symphony and conductor Alan Miller have grand feel for Harris's magic. Let's hope more Harris will follow soon. --Paul Cook

This Roy Harris Symphony Is Truely a Great Nineth.......2007-02-20

I am now happily in possession of two quality versions of Roy Harris' Nineth Symphony: one by the National Symphony Orchestra of the Ukraine with Theodore Kuchar (Naxos) and the version here by the Albany Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Alan Miller.

For me, Roy Harris' Nineth is one of those wonderfully complex works that cannot absorbed with one session and so, I find something new almost every time I listen to it.

I have heard the critique of Roy Harris that his Symphony's often lack smooth transistions; that they are 'sectional' and that certainly seems to be the case with the Nineth. The second movement settles into a sequence which feels repititious and which seems to lack purpose but it leads into a marvelous trumpet solo and we all know what Harris can do with trumpets and tympani. The result is that I feel almost to blame for concluding a lack of purpose in the first place.

The bottom line is that I feel compelled to listen again and again and again for both the enjoyment and curiosity with regard to the question of what makes a symphony "great". And, I go through the same same process with all of Harris' works including the Symphony 8 here and my favorite - the Seventh on the Naxos American Classics Naxos label.

Why isn't Harris better known?.......2006-10-12

Poor Roy Harris -- we always hear how Shostakovich is a great Russian composer who was opposed by the Comunist leadership, but in fact he got a lot more promotion from his government than Harris got from his. Harris had solid "American" credentials -- born on Lincoln's Birthday in a log cabin, etc. -- but was mercilessly persecuted during the McCarthy era for his wartime dedication of his Fifth Symphony to the Red Army (our ally at the time) and it seems he never overcame it. To top that off, the musical establishment either ridiculed him as too "old fashioned" (translation: tonal music during the 50s) or held his success during the 30s against him. Here, then, is a composer whose style and history parallels that of Shostokovich without garnering the respect the latter holds today. Perhaps his music is not of the same quality, but I personally believe that not to be the case. These performances are of surprisingly high quality and the same goes for the recording. I urge anyone who considers themself a fan of American music to sample this. One cannot claim to be knowledgeable about American symphonic music and not know these works. At the same time, it is a shame that there apparently is not a complete recorded traversal of Harris symphonies.

In case it wasn't clear, this is highly recommended. Harris's Third Symphony is still available in several classic recordings; if you are familiar with that and like it, you will like this as well. These same forces have recently tackled the Second Symphony (in a spectacular recording) and there are current recordings of the 4th (not in the same league, in my opinion), 5th, 6th, and 7th (perhaps the finest of the symphonies yet recorded). Harris continued composing symphonies up until the American Bicentennial, but his "liberal" philosophy probably contributed to the damning reviews the later works received. I hope to hear them all someday.

The Average American Ninth.......2005-06-16

I was a bit let down by the ninth symphony, considering the vamp it is given on the cover, being the GREAT American ninth. It did not amount to great. It wasn't exactly bad either, just... average. Harris most certainly wrote better symphonies. The third, fifth, and seventh are indeed hallmarks of his symphonic career (you'd think with the odd symphony numbering the ninth would join the ranks also). The ninth could be The Mediocre American Symphony. It is themed after the Gettysburg address, so it gets the American qualification. However, it's not in the familiar Copland or Grofe American style, but it doesn't have to be to be American. It is Harris, but it's doodling Harris, Harris not going anywhere in particular, not finding a great climax or any great theme. It doesn't have to be climatic or have a great theme to be great, but the ninth doesn't qualify as "great".

The eight is a bit more appealing, being broken up into more shorter sections. Here Harris clearly gets his ideas across in each movement. The gem, I feel, on this CD is the Child's Sunday. These three works are captivating, somewhat in the way Hovhaness' music is, but still retaining Harris' trademark style.

But as for the "Great American Ninth," I'm not sure America has one. Most composers never got to nine. David Diamond wrote one, which I haven't heard. So did Hovhaness, which I have also not heard. Naxos recently produced the first recording of William Schuman's ninth. Nice, but also not the "great" symphony. Perhaps in America we should stick with our thirds instead of our ninths: Schuman's, Harris', Copland's, Hanson's, Ives', Piston's... works all deserving of the "great" title.

I've been waiting a long time to hear a Harris symp. after the beloved #7, so I am hard put to say anything else, except thank you. Movements fire off immediately with next page, so stand back and don't get into the way of the momentum. Most raves are about the brasses in Harris works, but just listen to those string parts! One flaw in this CD package is that it is a bit much hearing both symps. back to back (in reversed order!) with nothing to separate them. I concentrated on #8 first, then #9. The Harris amplified piano is a much-loved element now and allows a wonderful final this-is-it sustained chord and terminal note at the end of #8. Hurrah for Albany Symphony and let's have some more great stuff from this wonderful composer.

Two interesting, but not great, American symphonies.......2000-01-11

Although these are not among Roy Harris's best works, they do deserve a hearing and I'm glad they are on CD. I would prefer more fervent advocacy of these works on the part of David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony. To be sure, they turn solid performances recorded in fabulous sound by the Albany Records engineers; but these works probably require more interpretive help from conductor to make their full impact. I would like to have heard what someone like Leonard Bernstein would have made of them. Under the baton of the a great conductor, they may have sounded like masterpieces. The best work on the program is the Ninth Symphony. Although it lacks the masterful cohesiveness of Harris' masterpiece, the Third Symphony, it has its moment, and the atmosphere or the work is pure Harris. The Eight Symphony rambles a bit and never quite equals the sum of its parts.

Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Back to the roots..........2007-06-02

"Sunday's Child" represented a step back to his folk roots for John Martyn after the radical experimentalism of his previous album "Inside Out". "Sunday's Child" finds Martyn in a content mood. As detailed in the liner notes Martyn was a young father at the time this was recorded and this disc captures that aspect of his life, particularly on tracks like " My Little Girl". Martyn's voice throughout is excellent, and his guitar playing (as usual) is phenomenal. I personally prefer some of his more pensive material from this one, such as the title track, "Lay It All Down", and "Call Me Crazy", which all showcase his acoustic guitar playing and signature slurred vocals, but after repeated listens I began to appreciate the more upbeat material like "One Day Without You" and the almost heavy metal sounding "Root Love". The bonus tracks included on this remastered edition are a worthy addition to the original album, and give the listener an opportunity to hear some of the electric guitar driven songs off the album in an acoustic setting live on the BBC. After purchasing all of Martyn's CD's from the 1970's I am convinced that the man could do no wrong during this period. All of his albums on the Island label are amazing, and "Sunday's Child" is no exception. Word to the wise: if you buy this you may find yourself buying the rest of John Martyn's catalog down the line. Don't smirk...it happened to me.

For John Martyn fans, a revelation........2006-03-27

I've been listening to Sunday's Child since the Carter administration, & trying to cover some of the songs for nearly as long. One of my favorites is the brief & aching "Lay It All Down"--inimitably simple, just acoustic guitar & upright bass. I've always liked the production of the whole album but wished more of the music were just that naked. I ordered this 2005 re-release without knowing much about it--I'm kind of a completist & there were some alternate versions of songs I just had to have.

What I didn't even hope was that they & the other bonus tracks would all be just Martyn, singing & playing alone. This is indispensable stuff for anyone who loves his music already--or anyone attracted to gorgeous, sensual, smart, jazzy, posttraditional music in general. Especially fine are "One Day Without You," "You Can Discover," "Spencer the Rover," & the nineteenth-century folk song "Ellie Rhee," all on acoustic guitar.

Someday Sunday's Child & the rest of Martyn's 1970s catalogue will get the attention they deserve (&, I understand, already get in much of the UK). Meanwhile, it's fun to find music this great that still hasn't been turned into a Volkswagen commercial.

It's difficult to imagine, but after a decade, this remains as good an album as I've ever heard. My wife and I lost it on tape, and still, a decade later it haunts us. Keaggy is a genius. I'll post another review after re-ordering!

I'm in awe.......2006-02-12

As an American, I feared not being able to understand "Liverpoolan" English, and one's ears attune and with the excellent staging and actors, the lyrics and music just shine. This recording can sit proudly along with your Les Miz and Phantom, and others. I've heard the recording now many times and just look forward to the next London visit. Feel blessed to be the beneficiery of such talent.

A Classic Musical Theatre Mix.......2006-01-14

This recording doubtlessly provides a superior rendition of a show that deserves any accolades it receives. There is a comfortable mix of drama, comedy and the corniness that accompanies countless musical theatre productions. Though some of the backing music is corny to the level of being far-fetched, one cannot help but be moved by this recording as a whole. The songs can carry themselves, but come across even stronger on account of the excellent character singing and dialogue. This accompanying dialogue is some of the strongest in any musical theatre recording and the strong Liverpudlian accents add an endearing British charm.
There is no question as to why this production is so popular and upon being cast as the Narrator in this show, listening to this recording once was enough to get me hooked.
Listen to this recording on any day and while in almost any mood. It should suit everyone.

Incredible Show!.......2005-12-25

I saw this show in London, and it was the most emotional show that I've seen, even more than Les Mis. It's a smaller show, but it soars with its performances. This recording is wonderful, right from the start with the haunting overture that still gives me chills. This recording all features Mark Hutchinson, who sadly was not at the performance I saw (although his understudy was excellent). The incredible echo effects from the show are still alive on this recording, and Stephanie Lawrence is PHENOMENAL!!! She is much better than the Mrs. Johnstone I saw (although she was quite good), and her voice is incredible. Grab this recording of this little known show, and you'll absolutely fall in love with it!
