Editorial Reviews
Formed in 1996, the GYPSY HOMBRES have taken a new approach to an old style. Starting with the classic sounds of Django Rheinhart and Stephane Grappelli, the Hombres have been designing their own stamp on the sound. This is the 3rd CD offered by the GYPSY HOMBRES, and the most ambitious by far. Violinist Peter Hyrka (Memphis Chapter N.A.R.A.S. Hall of Fame) started the group, not only to keep his Eastern European heritage alive, but to open the ears of the unitiated.
Product Description:
All original collection (with 2 Django Rheinhart covers) from Nashville's first and most original "Gypsy Jazz" group. Featuring violin, guitar, and string bass, this all-instrumental recording carries the gypsy torch into the new millenium.

Ottmar Liebert's most famous, if not most accomplished, effort gave a new genre its title, the New Age market a new champion, and flamenco purists--like Paco de Lucia, who despite a thank-you on the album, has called Liebert's music "worthless"--a new punching bag. All of which is a little beside the point; Liebert's rhythms may not be complex compas, but he perfectly captures the laid-back, open-space feel of his adopted home of Santa Fe with simple two-chord progressions and piquant nylon-string guitar lines that remain memorable long after listening. The indelible "Heart Still Beating" and the elegaic "Moon over Trees" bear this out. Liebert would up his technical and compositional ante considerably on Sola Para Ti and Borrasca, but there's still something undeniably balmy about this low-key debut--replete with lush New Agey synthesizer washes--that begs one to light the scented votive candles and get cozy. --James RotondiCustomer Reviews:
Catch this one!.......2007-06-09
Ottmar Liebert has contributed notably to a second air of the flamenco a heartfelt and moving Spanish rhthym so enjoyed for many people aropund the world.
This album encloses what we might call the real spirit of the flamenco in its different moods. On the contrary, I think this is a gratyfying album, plenty of inspiration and vibrant emotions.

Upbeat, refined, and congenial as ever, Café Tropical is the sixth release from Canadian-born guitarist Johannes Linstead; and like the others before it, it's a crisply performed, easy-to-like collection of nouveau flamenco destined to brighten the atmosphere, particularly at summer patio parties. Linstead, principally playing Spanish guitar (plus keyboards and assorted percussion with contributions from 10 other instrumentalists) is a nimble guitarist and tasteful composer who tones down flamenco's most incendiary tendencies just enough to create lively, feel-good melodies with suitable-for-all-audiences intentions. Prime examples: the disc's warm, soulful opener, "Cien Fuegos," and the trumpet-fueled title track, a piece that closely parallels "Mango" from 2001's Guitarra del Fuego. While tame by traditional standards, Linstead intermittently launches note-dense sorties on Café Tropical to showcase his formidable technique, and his inclusion of Cuban jazz pianist Hilario Duran on two tracks adds a welcomed taste of improvisational flair to the otherwise tightly structured proceedings. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
Café Tropical is an ocean breeze on a sun-filled day, or a night dance beneath a starlit sky The sixth album by award winning guitarist Johannes Linstead, Café Tropical features musicians from around the world - including Cuba, Venezuela, and Greece, bringing a taste of the tropics to your ears!Customer Reviews:
Yet Another Gem! Beautiful job, Johannes. Bravo!.......2007-05-22
1: Cien Fuegos - Translated as "A hundred fires", this starts off more slowly than one might think given the title. We are started off by what sounds to me like a rattle combined with a 'rolling' cymbal. The beautiful guitar melodies range in pace from mid-tempo to moderately quick. Chimes make a nice appearance in here on occasion. I love the violin work in this too. For some reason, it puts me in mind of looking out at the crashing waves on a beautiful tropical day. Very relaxing, with just enough 'fire' to warm the blood and stir the heart.
2. Cafe Tropical- This the title track, and a pretty fast one at that. It's a memorable tune to be certain, a beautiful dance between catchy quick guitar and invigorating trumpet melodies. Most of the guitar passages in hee appear to actually PRETTY quick, with some rapid fire fluid 'runs'. The trumpet passage in the middle brings a smile. A very danceable tune that makes me want to grab a sangria.
3. The Streets Of Old San Juan- Here we have another 'middle-of-the-road' piece as far as tempo. The percussion and invigorating guitar will draw you in quickly. Despite SOME very fast playing in parts, I love the mellow laid-back feel of the piece as a whole. The piano featured in this cut add a really 'tasty' flaveor that gives the piece a very nice character. The percussion stirs your heart while the guitar carries you along on a journey through the streets of this warm and inviting locale. Ole.
4. Spanish Town- Guitar and chimes begin the piece. It's a 'happy' little ditty that pulls you in fast. Again, the tempo is laid-back a bit, proving that Johannes does not have to always play a hundred miles a second to captivate a listener. The percussion and chimes warm this piece up as the guitar dances along. What I really love is the inclusion of the steel drums in here to give this piece a really exotic feel. It's a favorite.
5. Tides Of Eden - This is just BEAUTIFUL. It's my favorite tune on the disc. I LOVE it when Johannes decides to play it slow. This starts off VERY slowly, but doesn't stay that way. We are started off by very slow and pretty keyboards, chimes and violin, over which the guitar dances for us. The variations in the guitar's pacing paint a picture of incoming tides for us. I prefer the slower passages, but even the quicker runs are just as lovely and stirring to my heart and my blood. I can visualize standing alone or with a special someone upon a beach at sunset, watching the sun go down and seeing the tides come in. The occasional chimes and bells are a nice touch. The best part, or the most intriguing to me, is how the guitar drops away at the end, allowing the piece to finish with a beatiful, almost very softly 'crying' violin passage. This is an exquisite piece of music, and my favorite piece on the entire CD.
6. Ole Ole Ola- To me, this is road music. Put the top down and cruise The pacing is just right for me to picture a leisurely drive along a sun-splashed coastal paradise. As always, the guitar and percussion are fetching. In particular, the percussion to me feels almost primal. The chimes flow softly, almost like gentle waves through the melody on occasion. I just love it.
7. Suave- Here's another laid-back, jaunty, feel good number. Guitar and percussion mate with a SMOOTH undercurrent of piano. When I hear this I feel like a super-cool high-roller strolling in for a night on the town. I love the relaxing pace of this, and the guitar playing just makes me want to chill out and enjoy it all. Chimes are here again, adding a warm touch to it all. The piano puts me in mind of being in a high-class tropical nightclub. Beautiful! Bravo!
8. El Zocolo - Here, we finally get pretty fast. The opening guitar passage is almost 'swirling' its way along. It feels to me like another "cruising" melody, and I love it. For the most part, the percussion sounds a little softer, as if carrying the guitar instead of dancing along beside it, but that's cool with me. I like it very much. I love where the chimes come in, and the faster pace feels like Johannes 'busting loose' a bit. I LOVE pieces that feel like top-down, gun the engine road music.
9. Santeria- This piece, feels to me like another mid-tempo number. Guitar, percussion, and chimes interweave again at the start. The guitar melodies are, as always, terrific and stir the soul to me. The percussion and pace make this a dance number, but a kind of relaxed number that you "groove" to instead of dancing a thousand miles an hour. Great stuff... love it. :)
10. Chica Chica - Another quick one. This feels like a samba or something similar to it. Quick, blood-pumping guitar runs and percussion are the stars of the piece. The guitar heats you up while the percussion's pace keeps you moving.
11. Para La Habana- This is started by lovely slow guitar and the tapping of percussion that sounds like wooden blocks. The sound of the guitars puts me in the mindset of hearing a laid-back but SPICY piece of Cuban jazz music. I LOVE the violin that dances through this piece. At first I found the vocals distracting but they grew on me and gave this closing song a very nice flavor.
In closing I will just say this. If you are a fan of Johannes Linstead's music, you owe it to yourself to get Cafe Tropical. It's Johannes' best work yet in my view. If you are not a fan, one listen to Cafe Tropical may make you a fan forever. Happy listening, and God bless.

As usual, Johannes Linstead delivers some of the most catchy and memorable melodies in the nouveau flamenco genre, and of course his guitar playing speaks for itself. Highly recommended!
Fun! Festive! FANTASTICO!.......2006-06-07
The album has many sexy Afro-Cuban sounding pieces, like "Suave", 'Streets of Old San Juan", "Para La Habana", and the title track "Cafe Tropical". These songs feature some wonderful Cuban musicians like Hilario Duran on piano, Osvaldo Rodriguez on violin and vocals, and Alexis Baro on trumpet.
Cafe Tropical is perfect for backyard pool parties, cruising around town with the top down and the tunes cranked, and just about anytime you feel like celebrating!

Great Album!.......2006-04-22
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

This is where it all began. Ten years ago, Ottmar Liebert brought flamenco music to the world with a new style of playing he dubbed, appropriately, nouveau flamenco. Ten years later, despite such adventurous CDs as Opium and The Hours Between Night and Day, Nouveau Flamenco remains his most popular CD. The reasons are obvious. Although Liebert is a technically gifted player, he lets the melodies of his flamenco-inspired tunes ring out over his own virtuosity. That's what makes songs like "Barcelona Nights" and "Sante Fe" so memorable. Nouveau Flamenco spawned countless imitators, some of them even very good, but this CD instantly reveals why Liebert has managed to be the top-of-the-brain name for modern flamenco music. On Nouveau Flamenco: 1990-2000, they've remixed everything, extended some tracks out a bit and brought in five additional pieces recorded at the same time as the original CD. The resequencing may throw off your memories of the original, and the mix here tends to be thinner and less reverberant, but one decade and millions of CD sales later, Nouveau Flamenco still lives up to its title. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
Soothing.......2006-04-24
I'm a wedding officiant/minister in south Texas and as such, many of the weddings I perform have an hispanic flavor to them. I've found this music to be extremely popular for the pre-procession when people are gathering their seats and waiting for the ceremony to begin. I play this often and without fail, have somene comment on it later, wanting to know what it was.
You'll love the mellow, soothing sounds. I often play it at home, particularly when I'm relaxing on the back patio on a warm summer evening with a cool glass of lemonade.
First experience with Nouveau Flamenco.......2004-06-04
I could also visualize myself at home in a meditation listening to this CD; yes, exciting and relaxing at the same time. After listening to this CD a couple of times on the radio, I heard that Liebert was coming to town in an outdoor concert in three weeks and like a fantasy come true, I got a couple of friends together, played the CD in their car, and got three tickets for dinner and a concert. We are all psychologists, and this concert is our weekly gathering for business, pleasure, and entertainment.
great music.......2003-05-31
Buy the ORIGINAL-- nothing is "special" about this edition!.......2003-01-19
Get the original album that was released in 1990. This flat re-release boasts "extra tracks" that in reality are just remixes masquerading as new material. Note that the above editor's review mentions the "thinned" out sound of the special edition versus the original release. I agree completely, and that is the bulk of my complaint about this cd. The original version was meatier, had more purposeful arrangements, and the sound was unique without being flashy.
This new edition, however, is a castration. New age guitar music already teeters dangerously on the edge of the easy-listening abyss, and this remastering has pushed 'Nouveau Flamenco,' a recording that barely evaded the evil clutches of Lite Jazz, into the bubble-bath music category.
Bottom line: if you want MUSIC, purchase the original release in all of its dynamic acoustical glory; if you want a collection of lullabies or a smooching soundtrack, pick up this so-called "special" edition, complete with its extra synthesizers and a computer's sense of rhythm.
Flamenco ?.......2002-12-23
There are a lot of new, real flamenco guitarists with infinitly more 'duende', 'compás' & 'aire':
Manolo Sanlúcar, Serranito, Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, Moraito, Vicente Amigo, Pepe Habichuela, Gerardo Núñez, José Antonio Rodríguez, Niño Josele, Rafael Riqueni, Chicuelo, El Viejin, Jeronimo, Enrique de Melchor, Juan Carlos Romero, Cañizares etc etc
Í have no problem with his music except the 'flamenco' label he is selling it with - ottmar's has absolutely nothing to do with flamenco. Its just his way to make money......

Maynard still ROCKS!.......2005-03-03
Pretty good, Maynard still has it for sure!.......2003-09-28
Maynard has to be the coolest Canadian ever. Such an enthusiastic player, even at age sixty-eight, when this performance was done. "You Got It" is a pretty nice opener, it's energetic to say the least. However, the best performance on the album is easily the following track (in my opinion) Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca". What a great rendition, Maynard goes absolutely nuts! There is also great trombone and alto saxophone soloing. "The Vibe" is a hint at laid-back Maynard, he plays with a flugelhorn here and sounds nice, using his upper register effectively in the places it's best suited to be. "Cajun Cookin'" is a cool Denis DeBlasio arragement but honestly I'm not really wild about it. It's nice but not my favorite. The chart of "Milestones" was the huge disappointment, however. I had played through this chart and loved it, but this recording was sub-par. The saxophone solo is too long and Maynard should've done a lot more with this tune than the short harmon mute solo and screaming at the end. I expected a lot more. However, the lacking of the "do" at the end is great, look at the liner notes for reference on that. Matt Wallace also comes up with a nice vocal on "She Was Too Good To Me", and the trumpet section comes with some nice screaming headed by Larry Foyen. The new "Birdland" is decent, although not on the level of the original, but you have to love the ESPN Sportscenter ending. "Blues From Around Here" is a classic. The whole band swings like crazy on this tune, which sounds like it's based on the changes to "Watermelon Man". Maynard goes crazy on here, and Don Zank swings on piano. The performance ends with a fast remake of "It Don't Mean A Thing", the famous Duke Ellington classic. This was a good way to end the album.
Overall, if you're a Maynard fan, this is one that is worth picking up. Maynard is playing amazingly well, especially for someone of his age. Whoever said he sounded terrible is totally wrong! I'll admit Maynard had some tone trouble on Live In London but none here. However, as an overall product, this album is not as good as Live In London, in my opinion. However, these are both worthy buys. If you're new to Maynard, get acquainted with some of his work with the Kenton band, and then some of his 60's and 70's bands.
