A must own Indeed.......2006-02-13
The Ozomatli: Live at the Fillmore DVD does a great job of capturing this highly talented band as best as can be done, without actually being there dancing, sweating and laughing in person. From the beautiful spanish style accoustic guitar by Raul Pacheco to the silly erotic dancing of "Sheff" the band's trombone player. These musicians are all so deeply talented and they have so much fun doing what they do. The audio cd has tracks that are not show on the dvd, thats the only reason I didn't give this cd/dvd combo 5 stars.
The dvd also has cool behind the scene features of the band in their tour bus sharing laughs and ripping on each other. I hear they're recording a new record currently so their touring may come to a pause soon. Either way, this is one DVD/CD every concert lover should own. This band Rocks!
Amazing live record!.......2006-01-19
All in all this live record has made me come around completely and I can't wait to pick up the rest of their catologue. The intensity and energy these musicians put forth just goes through the roof and it really does come across well on the CD. I'm not sure exactly why but both the DVD and CD have slightly different setlists (perhaps from two different nights at the Fillmore?), but it gives a nice change to the two mediums. My only complaint is that my favorite song from the earlier Coming Up EP "Ya Viene El Sol" is not present. This doesn't detract much from the rest of the material present as it is all outstanding.
If you're up for a fun, eclectic, and energetic live album, I highly recommend this CD/DVD!

Raphael Saadiq sums up his 15-year career on this live double CD. An R&B connoisseur whose hitmaking days began long before anyone started tossing around the term "neo-soul," Saadiq brought not only his current band to the Hollywood club's stage but a number of guests including members of his former group Tony Toni Tone and the musically likeminded D'Angelo. The result is a sometimes languid, sometimes intense walk through material drawn largely from his 2002 solo debut Instant Vintage and the Tony catalog (the latter given satisfying but short playing time). While it's hard not to see All Hits as marking time for Saadiq, the discs do allow plenty of room for him to display his formidable talents as a singer, writer, and bandleader. Where much neo-soul tends to pleasantly blend into the atmosphere, Saadiq has enough melodic command--not to mention his sly sense of humor--to make this more than a showcase of technique. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

The Godfather of Neo Soul hit the mark one mo' 'gin.
Joi, KILLS "Missing You"...(Her CD <"Star Kitty's Revenge"> was kinda subpar, but she has a GREAT live voice!)
Ledisi RIPS it on "Different Times"
The Tonies were tight, and they NEED a reunion CD, dagnabbit!
Alan Leeds was the tour manager, the long-time tour manager for Prince and he was Maxwell's tour manager on his UHS tour...Leeds is one of the best in the business.
Raphael's command over his band is truly remniscent of Prince's command over his touring bands.
Best moment - When D'Angelo came out and duetted with Ray Ray on "Be Here" -- BOMB! I get goosebumps everytime I hear the crowd realize who's walking out on stage and lo and behold -- IT'S D' HIMSELF! Classic moment! And then D' proceeds to RIP IT UP! I love it! D', came back, big balla!
But, good people of Amazon, get this CD, it's well worth it.

Finally, the U.S. sees a domestic release of Fatboy Slim's On the Floor at the Boutique, hands down one of the most thrilling, addictive DJ mix albums ever released. Recorded live in 1998 at the Big Beat Boutique (epicenter of the mid- to late-'90s big-beat movement), Norman Cook, a.k.a. Fatboy Slim, takes the listener on a fascinating, diverse tour of four-on-the-floor sounds. What's always made Cook so great is the way that he seamlessly blends seemingly incongruous sounds to create righteously cool, shiny new beats; he truly is the trainspotting vinyl freak with an uncanny talent for creating accessible dance-floor shakers built of weird components. Take track 4--who'd have thought a spry blue-beat ska sample, an ELO riff, phat beats, a few stray horn riffs, and a sped-up Jungle Brothers vocal track would be one of the coolest things heard all year? --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

Perhaps no musician more defines a city and a sound than Chuck Brown does Washington, D.C. and go-go. At the age of 67, the godfather of go-go has entertained three generations and still plays to thousands of fans at least three times a week in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia triangle. Go-go is the same age as hip-hop, and shares all of its urban bombast, but it's a live-band thing, and a community thing too. When disco DJs threatened to displace cabaret bands in the '70s, Chuck invented the kinetic, syncopated go-go backbeat and put together continuous funkified sets of originals and covers linked by generous crowd shout-outs and sizzling percussive breakdowns. This recent set, featuring appearances by Trouble Funk and Rare Essence luminaries, has it all: Chuck's exquisite baritone, brilliant musicianship, go-gofied hip-hop, blues and jazz, and breakbeats you can fit a trailer into. If you don't know anything about go-go or Chuck, Your Game...Live At The 9:30 Club might the best introduction you're ever likely to hear. It's definitely one of the best records of 2001. Special bonus: the multimedia enhancements include two videos that put you right in the middle of all the go-go action. --Jeff ChangCustomer Reviews:

Not my game exactly, but I can't stop playing it.......2003-03-16
The audience for this live show seems to be specially selected people who know every rite of the go-go show and who appreciate the cameos from Jas, Funk, Benny, Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson (some irony there), and other special guest artists from old school go-go luminaries such as Trouble Funk. I hope one day to be well-enough versed in go-go to savor such moments.
Coming to this CD from classical and hip-hop, though, there are priceless moments enough. A horn riff with (electronic piano doubling as) harpsichord under it in the opening "Wind Me Up, Chuck" sounds freaking exactly like the opening ritornello in Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto, but about five million times funkier. Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" gets a conga-driven workout and some ultrasmooth Chuckster lyrics. "2001 (That'll Work)" again takes a classical work, in this case "Dawn" from Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra, and funkafies it mercilessly into the go-go strut, producing extra-special glee for anyone who likes historical irony and remembers Strauss's vile late-life racism. "No Diggity," the one hit in the wonder that was Blackstreet, and the Kool Moe Dee classic "Do You Know What Time It Is?" both get slamming covers towards the close of the album, showing that Chuck and his band can cover all the R&B bases they choose to.
But mostly this record is about bold, jazzy brass playing, guitar riffs powerful enough to shake mountains, Chuck's magesterial presence, and the go-go beat powering it all. It's really a wonderful thing, and the only reason I don't play this record more than I do is that I'm worried about becoming inured to its glories.
The fact that the first of like five shout-outs to Silver Spring occurs at 4:26 into the record is purely incidental to my enjoyment of it, by the way.

Everlast continues defying the odds with his sophomore CD. The former House of Pain frontman and Ice-T sidekick defied the odds in 1998 with the chart-topping Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, which moved Everlast beyond his rap roots and deep into a spare, acoustic amalgam of Delta blues, country, and rock--an approach that took critics and fans by storm. Eat at Whitey's finds him beefing up his sound as well as bringing in big names, such as N'dea Davenport (who adds her always welcome vocals on the sexy, R&B-flavored "Love for Real"), Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo, Cypress Hill's B Real, and Carlos Santana, for whom Everlast penned the Grammy-winning "Put Your Lights On." Everlast is still fixated on redemption and regret, but his intensity and passion make up for the narrow focus, as, guitar in hand, he conjures up a nocturnal, sultry world populated with saints, sinners, and homeboys. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

Pushing musical boundaries.......2004-05-20
The diversity of styles presented here is impressive. "Deadly Assassins" is the closest thing to House of Pain times, while "Black Coffee" is almost a ballad. "Love for Real" has this specific bluesy feel, and "One, Two" is a mellow rapping flow. "Children's Story", a cover song, is impressive. Actually, I like the entire album, and I'm particularly impressed with the integration of cello and violin in a music like this. Carlos Santana's desire to work with Everlast is a quality approval mark, and the result is very good.
If your interests in music are broad, and you are not a "rap-fan-till-I-die", then I can't see how you won't like this record. Everlast is not the best singer, and neither he is a skillful guitar-player. But he is an excellent songwriter, sincere lyricist and emotional performer. This is one of my best purchases of recent years.

Hmmm...that reminds me. It's time to buy another copy of this one....
lmao.......2006-04-29
HAHAHA...hey...this is actually good..........2006-04-06
There are a few interludes that are basically not worth the time, but if you're in the mood they can be funny.
The primary songs are (just skip down if you already know about them from other reviews):
1. Luv Is A Verb - Enter the infamous, "down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk, are you down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk." I can't count the number of people who I have heard make fun of those lines. But if you try to forget that, the lyrics are very good. "Luv is enough if it's unconditionally, given now ya livin' out the Great Commission" Great words. Toby McKeehan really outdid himself on this song. (I'm trying to omit how tired of this song I am. It's a great song, but it can get old really fast.)
2. That Kinda Girl - This song describes the "kind of girl" that "loves the Lord" and is "virtuous in every way". Toby raps his head off in this one. Kevin and Michael still both have great voices, but back in '92, they had incredible voices, which are displayed in this song and actually, in all the tracks. The beat is undeniably an early-nineties beat, but it's catchy, and more of that comes up next.
3. Jesus Is Just Alright - If you think about it, dc Talk have done scads of cover songs, probably their most known one being "In The Light", but this one is not to be ignored. Toby's rap is so catchy it's bound to be in your head, at least in small portions, for a week or so, even if you only listen to it once. The part that always gets stuck in my head is the last rap part, which is "Never trite when I write cause the Lord is my light and His word is my bond so ya know (know, know), He's alright." Great beat, underlined with repetetive but not annoying keyboards.
4. Say The Words - This is probably one of my favorite dc Talk songs, but not this version. You've probably heard "Say The Words (NOW)", which is the remix of this song. This version is lacking in any melody other than what is sung by Michael and Kevin. The rest is an overuse and underuse of bass and electric guitars. But Toby's rap toward the middle is great, climaxing with "choose to lose the pride that may tug at you, don't be afraid of the words I love you".
5. Socially Acceptable - This has slowly become my favorite song off this. Toby later described this song as one of the "phatest" beats off this cd. It is. My favorite lyrics from this one are the poignant words in the chorus, "it's okay, in whose sight?" Good reminder that it's not okay to do what everyone else is doing, just because they're all doing it.
6. Free At Last - "WHAT???" Don't be distraught at the first 30 seconds. Soon the strange intro morphs into one of the most awesome Christian songs of the 90's. Backed by a choir in the chorus, this showcases Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith's best vocals. Toby's rapping, too, is some of the best in their history. "The father first receives us, the truth then frees us, forgiven, now I'm living like a man full of Jesus", that's some handy rhyming if you ask me.
7. Time Is... - "Straight up rock-n-roll", it begins...well, maybe. This is probably the most guitar-driven song on Free At Last, but definitly short of rock-n-roll. However, I personally love the almost uncontrollable sound of Kevin Max's vocals on the chorus. Mike Tait's voice is good here too, and Toby constantly is rapping "tick tock tickedy tock". The song drifts into a rock song with a strange beat, then, according to Toby's "orders", they "break it down" and return to hip-hop. But it goes back to that rock/pop beat towards the end again. This is a genius song.
8. The Hardway - "I guess I'm the kind of guy that has to find out for myself." This song, according to Tobymac, has been remade more than four times (I only count four, but he knows best, I guess). This song is a great song that ends with "I'm on my knees and I'm crying for help." This is the only song that is not fast-paced, and as such, had to be included on Intermission, but this version is great, too. It's a beautiful cry out to God acknowledging His power and our weakness.
9. Lean On Me - "Oldie but a goodie", the first words you hear on this song, are definitive of this song. It's an awesome rap/hip-hop version of the original song by Bill Withers. Don't think this version is anything like what you could've heard on the radio. Toby's rap isn't included in the edited radio version. I think they drive the song rather well, so don't miss this song.
10. I Don't Want It - Song about abstaining from sex until marriage. Good message, good beat, and Toby's rapping isn't even in the least bit annoying. Kevin's and Michael's singing are great. Again, their vocals are even better in this song than in the later songs.
11. Word 2 The Father - Just when you think they've outgrown their "rapping language" you hear this song. It's good, but so reminiscent of Nu Thang (but that should, of course, be expected, since the song is a pun on all the names of their songs from Nu Thang), it's just kind of annoying.
Overall, this is an awesome cd, I suggest it for Christians; who love music, or dc Talk, or even modern Christian rap/hip-hop, since this is how it all started. If you want more of "Jesus Freak", go try "Supernatural" instead, but if you even remotely liked "Nu Thang", even if just for its nostalgic value, you will absolutely love this cd.
The band's best work in retrospect.......2006-03-29
This one, though: I still listen to it and for the most part it's holding up well outside of a few minor clunkers. This one found the crew working harder to integrate samples, snappy melodies and harmony vocals, more skilled rap (don't get me wrong, Toby Mac has never been a GREAT rapper but he's honed his skills more here. He's more of a 'pop' rapper..akin to the likes of a Will Smith or a member of Bell-Biv-Devoe than a Christian counterpart to 2PAC or Biggie.), and a more cohesive feel to the album as the sound coalesced more into R&B tinged pop with rap icing.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"That Kinda Girl" was the band's statement about the allure of the Proverbs 31 woman, a woman who's "virtuous in every way/The kinda girl that makes me say/I hope she comes my way". It was the antithesis of L.L.'s "Round the Way Girl" and the tune really nails it home with "Hey, the girlie ain't playin'!". "Jesus is Just Alright" is a great techno-influenced jittery update of the Doobie Brothers' classic complete with what is probably Toby's best rap break of the album
LOWS:
"Luv is a Verb" isn't outright bad but it does have some of the most unfortunate rhymes here ("drain-o" and "explain-O"..ACK!). "Lean on Me" is a pretty boring cover that more or less rips off the cover done by Club Nouveau only 4 years before. It simply doesn't add enough different to make the tune DCT's own, save a brief Toby rap break. (The Nouveau rendition stripped the soulful plaintiveness of Bill Withers' original, so I'm not sure why they chose to emulate the clearly inferior version anyhow.) "WDCT" is the weakest of the interludes heard here.
BOTTOM LINE:
Quantum leap from NU THANG. At the time, it managed to get them onto the then super-hip Arsenio Hall show (the "2 Honks and a Negro" bit was taken from that appearance). I consider this their best release. (CCM Magazine has also named this as the #9 Christian album of all time.)
3 1/2 stars
Life Changing..........2006-02-19
Nearly 14 years later, it still has the same effect on me. While I may listen to secular music today, I still feel good listening to DC Talk's Free At Last and reminds me why I'm a Christian.

Chuck D of Public Enemy once prophesized that if artists didn't own their masters (tapes), the masters will own the artists. Well, hip-hop's fave gangster CEO Suge Knight owns most of his former high-profile label mates' master tapes and continues to issue collections of dated works by Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre, and now Snoop. Originally entitled Dead Man Walking to scare the willies out of Snoop, this release comes with a big fat greasy caveat emptor. Sure, this is a ghetto fab collection of the Doggfather's finest pre-No Limit and Doggystyle Records moments dating back to his brilliant cover of Biz Markie's "Vapors" on Tha Doggfather album. That said, Snoop wants nothing to do with this release because he won't receive any proceeds from it and has urged his fans not to buy it. Contractual shenanigans aside, this release is off the hook and contains most of Snoop's finest career headbangers, from "Gin and Juice" to "Who Am I (What's My Name)." A great purchase if you can live with your conscience. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:

6. Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) 9.5/10 Even though some of the lyrics are a bit purverted its still great with bangin beats
7. Doggfather Remix 6/10 Don't like this, it has no business being on here and Tha Doggfather original version should be on here instead
8. Midnight Love 10/10 Another unreleased that was definitely worth releasing. My favourite unreleased track with Eastside Party being my second
9. Eastside 6/10 I don't think that this song was meant to ever be released
10. Who Am I? (What's My Name?) 10/10 Classic, my second favourite famous song from Doggystyle
11. Doggy Dogg World 10/10 My third favourite famous song from Doggystyle, the beats are good and relaxing
12. Too High (Poly High) 7/10 Another song that shouldn't have seen the light of day
13. Vapors 10/10 Bangin beats, solo where Snoop talks about the lives of all the members of Tha Dogg Pound
14. Usual Suspects 8/10 This songs alright, but its still not top quality
15. Keep It Real 1/10 Hate this song, definitely shouldn't have been released. Snoop doesn't even have one verse on this
16. Snoop Bounce Roc N Roll Remix 5/10 This song is wack! Where's Snoop Bounce original version.

After the gentle turns of 2001's rich and melodious Zen, DJ Krush's The Message at the Depth banks a hard corner, layering political dissent and antiwar sentiments with jumbled beats and harsh electronic scrambles. Again making expert use of guest vocalists, artists like Anti-Pop Consortium and Anticon give literal expression to Krush's dark waxwork, turning "Supreme Team" and "Song for John Walker" into overt political statements. Throughout, Krush explores a deeply pissed-off vibe, coming up for air only on the bittersweet "Alrpheua (Truthspeaking)" featuring Angelina Esparza. He finds a little peace by the end of the record, lifting the veil on playful dub rhythms for "The Lost Voices" featuring Sly & Robbie and "What About Tomorrow" featuring Abijah. In a chaotic world, Krush's eloquent anger is soothing, even when his malevolent turntables smack us in the face. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description
2003 DJ Krush album is edgier than his last record Zen, with harder and deeper beats. A concept record with Krush reacting to 9/11 and interpreting a post 9/11 world. Guests this time include Anti-Pop Consortium, Sly & Robbie, Anticon, Angelica Esparsa and more. Red Ink label/Sony.Customer Reviews:

Redefining the Hip in hip hop.......2004-07-12
"Message at the Depth" combines that musical inspiration with a burning message.
If you liked the jazz tinged tracks on KI-OKU, "The Lost Voices" (with Sly and Robbie doing a lot more than just getting name checked) and "But the World Moves On" satisfy the promise of that earlier work. "Trihedron" makes d'n'b sound as fresh as if it hadn't happened yet. The hard electronica elements on this CD give it a solid edge that holds up under repeat listens. Add articulate lyrics that aspire to inspire to something more than a party - "Alehevo(truthspeaking)" achieves that all too rare miracle of speaking hard truth without preaching - and you have a CD that holds up to repeat play like few recent releases are capable of.
Subtle, sophisticated, hard edged, powerful, and recommended.
DJ Shadow may get the press, but DJ Krush is creating a body of work that can outlast the fads.

A nice complimation of old meets new........2007-05-31
(Dex Dubious) on WXPN in Philly a few years back and a few other selections from the album over the
last few years.
If you are into remixes, and diverse music, you'll really enjoy this album. Also the album is rootkit free, so it
will play on any any CD player.

Lawrence enters the millenium!!!!.......2004-08-24
BABY ELEPHANT WALK was my favorite Lawrence Welk single and to hear it in two different remixes on this CD is a real treat.
The biggest surprise was Guy and Ralna's recording of YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE. Imagine Jimmy Davis in his heavenly home looking down on dancers stomping to his signature tune.
You don't even have to have heard of Lawrence Welk to love this cd!
One of 2004's best releases.
A must have!.......2004-08-18
