Mary Miche is a talented musician and experienced educator whose commitment to educating children through the joy and excitement of music includes teaching them about concern for the earth, peace, non-violence and cooperation. Mary has performed in hundreds of concerts in the past ten years, traveling across the U.S. Her tapes and CDs have been reviewed by the School Library Journal, Booklist, Entertainment Weekly, Parent's Magazine and several newspapers. WEE HAIRY BEASTIES for about 15 mins.......2007-06-11

My 3 yr old loves this CD for about 15 mins. The first several songs are good, then the album falls flat. The tunes are catchy and I have found myself at work many days chanting "Wee Hairy Beasties" with a brogue as the band leader does. Enjoyable, in small doses.

I was nervous when I ordered this. As a longtime fan of Jon Langford and Sally Timms, I feared that I was foisting my tastes on my five-year-old daughter. Would this join her stack of unlistened CDs?

My fears vanished before the opening title track. My daughter loves this record even more than I do. The music is clever, engaging, and best of all -- not cloying.

Kids Music for Grown-ups too!.......2007-01-17

Finally, a CD that can be heard at least 4 times a day that won't drive you insane. For some reason music for children tends to be simple. Animal Crackers proves that you can make good music for children and still have the silly lyrics and rhymes that kids love. I bought several copies for all the kids in my extended family.

Smart and Catchy.......2006-11-27

After just one listen, my two year old was singing out loud for Wee Hairy Beasties. Seriously. We were jumping for each "wee" and giggling, and she wanted to hear more about Cyril the Karaoke Squirrel. And all this in an an albumn that doesn't make my ears bleed.

Why Aerosmith, a hard-rock band, would record Diane Warren's music is beyond me. I mean, come on, this is the same woman who writes songs for Celine Dion, for crying out loud! I remember when this came out, I was SO disappointed. I just felt like- man, Aerosmith, when you need other people to write songs for you, its time to pack your bags and head out. There is something so gross about Steven Tyler singing this song. He's supposed to rock, not whine. And what's up with the rest of the band? here you have Joe Perry, an amazing guitarist, wasted on a song where the guitar is hardly present. Its the same with Joey Kramer, where are the cool drums? Why, Aerosmith, why? Was it because Liv Tyler was in Armageddon that you guys felt you HAD to make this song? Its just not right, Aerosmith is not pop. Seriously, they play this on the same stations that play the Backstreet Boys. GRRR!

'I Dont Want To Miss A Thing' was Aerosmith first number one single, and for good reason it is an amazing ballad even if the band didnt write it. This is truly one of the best songs you will ever hear in you whole life, get this I urge you!!!

The Straight Goods.......2007-01-12

Okay Marx Brothers Fans, if there is ever a doubt that you aren't getting the straight goods from this soundtrack, perhaps you need to consider a new fan club. After all, why would anyone question the validity and authenticity of the Marx Brother's musical sound? If you loved the movie Horse Feathers, you'll love this sound track too. That said, I find it odd that this movie soundtrack was paired up with the music from the Marx's second movie hit, Animal Crackers; a movie which came along long before Horse Feathers. The Sound Track Factory also manufactured another CD soundtrack; The Cocoanuts, which is paired up with the music from Monkey Business. Since The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers were both the Brothers' debut films - as well as being their only Broadway hits, I don't see why they didn't pair those two together as a soundtrack. I have a couple of guesses, either they aren't as fanatical about the Marx Brothers as I am, or the earlier movies were distributed according to the quality of their sound. Remember, that the first Marx movie, Cocoanuts, was filmed in 1929, just two years after the end of silent films. Back in the late 20's and early 30's, they hadn't quite perfected the quality of soundtracks yet. You will find the recordings of Horse Feathers and Monkey Business a little clearer than those earlier films. Overall, who could argue with anyone who would attempt to preserve a legacy like this? I'm very grateful to have the original Movie soundtracks!

"You've Gotta Eat Your Spinach, Baby" with Norton Buffalo serves up a cheeky give-and-go that even vegetable haters will gobble willingly, and "We Should Be Together" ("You're a cup of coffee / You're a peachy pie") with Buffalo and child star Carrie Lyn--who also performs the title track, "On the Good Ship Lollipop," "When I Grow Up," and "Lullaby to a Doll"--is parent-child snuggle music, pure and simple. A Gem: You'll Never Grow Old If You're Young at Heart.......2004-05-02

Because Maria Muldaur is so fabulous, I unabashedly bought "Animal Crackers in My Soup" for my (grown-up) self. It is a flat-out terrific album, brightly fun and touching. The renditions highlight how perceptive, witty, and, as Maria says in the liner notes, "hip" the songs are. Like the best reinterpretations of jazz classics, they both re-enliven the songs and pay tribute to the original performers. Maria surely would have been a film star in the 1930s (from screwballs to weepers), with her keen intelligence, independent spirit, energy, comedic talents, beauty, and sultriness. So, I guess we can't say that they don't make 'em like that anymore. She should have at least a special on TMC or AMC!

As in Shirley Temple's work, love shines through Maria's voice on these songs, providing the embrace, faith, and hopefulness that children--and all of us--need. One can truly feel that love. Maria has paid close attention to the child listener through, for example, her clear enunciation and the duets with and solos by little Carrie Lyn, which would encourage sing-along. (And dance-along and snap-along: You have to start swingin' when you hear this album!) The intelligence and care in the album are also apparent in the selection of all the artists. The band is "cherce," as Jimmy Durante would say. Carrie Lyn is a marvel--believe it or not, a child performer without a touch of the lamentable oversophistication and Broadway "projection" that predominate nowadays. And Norton Buffalo is a hoot. There is no "talking down" to children on this album.

You don't have to analyze the components, though, just enjoy them! I highly recommend the album for children (it will become for me a favorite gift for children), jazz lovers, wits, fans of old movies, anyone who needs a lift--well, anyone! Now, that's one way to discover your sparkling inner child. I can't wait to get Maria Muldaur's other albums for "young people." OK, swing it!

Not Just for Little People!.......2004-01-20

Maria Muldaur is an American musical treasure, so don't be fooled into thinking her recordings for children are not also FABULOUS for us big grown up people. As is always the happy case, Muldaur brings aboard superior musicians and here assembles a tight swinging band featuring an especially talented player of all the reed instruments-Jim Rothermel. The sound is very much like John Kirby's Biggest Little Band of the 30's and 40's that often featured Claud Thornhill's piano and the light hot swing of Maxine Sullivan. And-as always, Maria shows exquisite taste in assemling songs from the great songsmiths of the 30's like Ted Koeler, Eddy Heyman, Mitchell Parrish, Richard Whiting and Harold Arlen. All the material is charmingly memorable in the delicious styles of Red Norvo's little swing band with Mildred Bailey or Teddy Wilson's sextet with clarinetist Edmond Hall. Goodnight my Love swings just like Benny Goodman's hit with Helen Ward, and when Muldaur sings with the young talented 8 year old girl you'd swear the Boswell Sisters were swinging singing again. Superior music for young and old!

Who's the kid on the cover.......2002-12-03

I must first say that I and more importantly, my boys (3 and 2) love this CD. The whole family sings along while the music is on and long after.
After I got over my initial annoyance with the grown lady singing the lion's share of the Shirley Temple songs, I've decided that I can live with it. But, they had a talented child (obvious from the songs she is allowed to sing) why not let her sing?
Look at the cover, don't we all expect to hear a child's voice?
The music, though, is just right for the upbeat, innocent and full sound we look for. (With maybe the exception of "When I grow up" ...too long...and "Good night, my love" ...too schmoozy and seemingly another excuse for Ms. Muldaur to steal the kid's spotlight.

My toes started tapping as soon as the first cut started. Garage band, not hardly! These guys are Detroit born and have that 60's/70's hard driving, heavy base, rock and roll sound down pat. Move over Stones, here comes the Animal Crackers. My favorite cuts are #'s 5 and 3. Keep on rockin.

Remember back in the heady days of high school that edgy cover band whose guys were cute enough to make you swoon and almost forget Mick Jagger? This garage band of the 60's seemed headed for fame and fortune after their masterful win at the Birmingham Battle of the Bands, but alas, and much to this fan's dismay, like the overwhelmingly talented rockers in the movie "The Commitments" they missed their moment of discovery. Then last summer they hit the jackpot in Vegas by reuniting to produce this album of classic rock favorites. Like finding your long lost love listening to this album will get any Baby Boomer back dancing in the streets with its hard-driving rhythms, Jagger-like vocals, and wicked 12-string guitar.

Unequivocal Success.......2007-01-25

Following the Animal Cracker's climactic win at the Birmingham teen center battle of bands, the infinitely-promising young group's subsequent fade into relative musical obscurity was considered, by devoted fans and critics alike, to be one of the great music tragedies of our time. With the release, years later, of this much anticipated follow-up album, the band makes clear that their's is not a tale of sorrow. To the contrary, the penetrating rift on the opening track alone cements the band's story as one of unequivocal musical success. Alternating between masterful keyboarding and elegant guitar, the band demonstrates its versatility and its immense talent. Adding to that the expert and textured vocals and folks, this is one for the record books. Although hard core "cracker heads" - the term used affectionately to refer to the band's dedicated fan base - may be initially disappointed to find the much-loved and oft-requested-live rendition of "bald headed woman" among the favorite hits lacking from the song's tracks, after one listen through fans will be hard pressed to find any song they'd be willing to part with to make the room. In fact, they'd be hard pressed to find any fault at all with what just may come to be considered one of the rare examples in this genre of rock record perfection. With this, the most ambitious and far-reaching album the band has released to date, the Animal Cracker's leave us with only one question: Where have you been all our lives?
