American Songs

Editorial Reviews

Deborah Murphy, The Times Record, May 30, 2002
Her voice is richly nuanced, with a warmly rendered innocence, but just as capable of conveying world-weariness.

Product Description:
An essential collection of 11 traditional American folk songs that capture what Cameron calls "a longing for home". Featuring 19th Century and early 20th Century favorites like "Red River Valley" and "Shenandoah", as well as later spirituals like "Peace in the Valley" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."

"Cameron can convey the sly honesty of His Eye is on the Sparrow and the catharsis of Careless Love with equal perception. Her triumph on American Songs was to go it alone, without accompaniment, and to choose songs that would still be bruised if spoken." -Face Magazine

Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Elliott Yamin does not need synthesizer.......2007-07-16

I love Elliott Yamin and was pleased with this first cd but he does not need all of the electronic synthesizer effects on some of the cuts. I saw him in person singing these same songs and they were so much better with just a band behind him. I hope his next cd will be done more simply. Elliott is amazing and he should be appreciated in his pure form.

I really like the sound of Elliott Yamin's voice. It is very soothing. Every song does not sound the same - I like that.

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing.......2007-03-31

This CD is nearly as relaxing as a Deepak Chopra CD. I am a voice in the chorus in that I originally bought it for use in a U.S. History class, but the Cd is great in its own right. Especially with tracks like Ashokan Farewell, and Battle Hymn of the Republic, this CD really is an amazing peace of work (although Ashokan Farewell isn't actually from the Civil War).

4 out of 5 stars A great peice of Civil War history........2007-02-14

This CD is a good buy for any Civil War buff. Even though it was intended for use as a soundtrack I would recomend it. It has many of the time honored songs that we associate with the period and the sound quality is great. I bought this CD with the intention of useing it in a high-school U.S History class, but it as has good non-educational merit.

5 out of 5 stars Music Befitting This Most Tragic of Wars.......2007-02-12

Why does it seem that some music becomes intrinsically connected to an event? Perhaps I should have said why is there such an affinity between certain soundtracks and the subject material? One thinks of films as wide-ranging as Twelve Monkeys (Astor Piazzolla), Lonesome Dove (Basil Poledouris) or Schindler's List (John Williams) and the music seems as integral to the film as the dialogue. That's the way it is in this case. That soulful, rising and falling sound of the violin, the rustic tunes with rural roots - all accentuate those terrible times with beauty and pathos. To put it bluntly, I find it difficult to believe that there will ever be a greater match between the visual and audible than is the case here. My Grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to Teach and Learn Spanish by Singing!.......2005-10-25

I highly recommend Jose-Luis Orozco's songs and books. They are an excellent and fun way to teach and learn Spanish by singing. I bought them for my children and it has helped them learn the Spanish language. Music is an excellent way to learn the language. The songs and music are very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars My Little Niece Loves It!.......2005-09-11

I love this CD. I've actually loved Jose Luis-Orozco ever since I was in college taking my teaching courses. He was commonly used to aid in our teaching lessons. The songs are very lyrical and are very catchy to dance to.

I bought it mainly for my little niece who is multi-racial and I thought it would be nice for her to connect to her Centro-American side. A lot of these songs have been shared or are known by my parents and grandparents. They grew up with these songs and I thought it would be nice for my niece to group up listening to them too.

This CD and many other Jose Luis-Orozco are currently used at a college summer program for adolescents between 1st grade-4th grade in Northridge. The students don't speak Spanish but when his songs are played they begin to sing them and learn a little Spanish along the way. The best song on this CD is "Buenos Dias" or (Good Morning) in English. The next best song is "Los Pollitos" or (the chicks). There's also a version of Old Mcdonald Had a Farm which, is called "La Granja."

My little niece enjoys this CD very much and she dances to it. We all gather around her and sing the lyrics and she couldn't be happier. I recommend this CD as well as any other Jose Luis-Orozco CD's because his background music is soft toned with only a guitar to guide the music. I love that! We had bought her another CD which, was livened up with ridiculous mambo background music, too overwhelming! Jose Luis-Orozco is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice collection of songs.......2005-07-04

We are trying to raise our daughter bilingual and really like to use music as a fun way to use both languages. This disc has really nice songs that even a young child will like to sing. The arrangements are nice enough that it won't drive an adult crazy to listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars excellent way to learn Spanish.......2004-12-31

This CD is fun and a great way to learn Spanish. My daughter sings the songs all the time. I love them, too.

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Choosing former Roxy Music member and David Bowie collaborator Brian Eno to produce them, Talking Heads expanded their sound greatly for their 1978-released second album. While most associated Eno with hi-tech, electronic fare, he surprisingly brought out the more organically rhythmic side of the Heads' material. With Jerry Harrison's keyboards playing a more pronounced role--most notably on their spirited hit cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River"--and drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth powering the band through tracks like "Stay Hungry" and "Warning Sign," leader David Byrne sounded more relaxed and "normal," even as he wandered through such high-concept works as "Artists Only" and the sprawling "Big Country." --Billy Altman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Talking Heads hit their stride.......2006-10-11

The Talking Heads' debut album, Talking Heads: 77, clearly stood the test of time like few punk and proto-punk albums. But if 77 was one of the best creations of the punk genre, then with their second album, More Songs About Buildings And Food, David Byrne and co. achieved a sound of their own that transcended time and genre, and assured their place in the pantheon of rock n' roll.

In no small part, thanks are due to producer Brian Eno; though he was only four years older than Byrne himself, Eno had a rich career behind him, not only as a former member of art-school heroes Roxy Music but also as a collaborator with varied artists such as David Bowie, Devo, John Cale and Robert Wyatt. Eno helped the Heads mature their style, giving Jerry Harrison's keyboard a more important role than in 77, and Harrison carries many of the songs on his wonderful playing. But Eno or no Eno, the show still belongs to Byrne, and he matured greatly in his singing and most notably in his songwriting from the first album. The angst and cynicism of Psycho Killer and Don't Worry About The Government is still there, but it's more subtle, more low-key, and much, much nastier. In fact, the beautiful The Big Country may just be the meanest piece he has ever written.

Not all the tracks on More Songs are standouts; in fact it starts out pretty mildly. The first three tracks - Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, With Our Love and The Good Thing - are relatively lukewarm, nice little tunes with good and intelligent lyrics, and aren't as powerful and straightforward as most of 77. But when Warning Signs hits, it's clear that the change that went over the Heads is not a mellowing of their first album, but on the contrary - Byrne merely sharpened his knives. Warning Signs is a phenomenal song and a strong one, and once the album hits its stride, it doesn't let go. Warning Signs is quickly followed by the brilliant Found A Job, that remains one of the Heads' greatest songs, and one of Byrne's best lyrical inventions, telling the story of a problem couple who start creating their own TV shows at home; the song is sharp and cynical, and in its subtle ways the message is more powerful than in straightforward anti-social numbers like the classic Psycho Killer. The next three tracks - Artists Only, I'm No In Love and Stay Hungry, are consistently engaging and challenging and keep the album running smoothly, even if Stay Hungry might have felt more at ease on 77.

The last two tracks show just how much the Heads have grown in the past year, and how much they have increased their versatility. The cover version of Al Green's Motown classic Take Me To The River instantly became the Heads' biggest radio hit, and even if it's not one of the best tracks on the album it's easy to see why; it's a fantastic cover version, done with every bit of respect and love for the original and for the Motown sound, but infusing it with new life and modern sounds. Byrne and co. prove on that track just how talented a group of musicians they were, setting themselves completely apart from punk rockers like the Sex Pistols or the Ramones; the Heads were capable of instrumental grooves that few punk bands could master. On the other hand, the epic The Big Country is the best showcase of Byrne's song craftsmanship, and it remains one of his greatest creations. Byrne's mild and subtle sarcasm on The Big Country is immensely stronger and nastier than anything on 77, and it's perfect in composition and in delivery both. The Big Country is the best track on More Songs, and it would be the springboard for their finest albums.

So even if More Songs About Buildings And Food is not the Heads' best album, it's the beginning of their creative prime, one that would produce the brilliant masterpieces Fear Of Music and Remain In Light, and even if it's not necessarily better on the whole than Talking Heads: 77, in many ways it's the first true Heads album. It's essential for any fan, and a standout album of its time.

4 out of 5 stars best TH album.......2006-05-17

Talking Heads were one of my favorite bands in the early 80's, but back then I listened mostly to Fear of Music; and Remain in Light has always been the critically more acclaimed album by the band.
Although many consider those two albums more significant, and I do not want to argue that opinion, 25 years later it's "More songs..." the CD I elect to listen to. That makes it the best Talking Heads album for me

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars-- the "second debut" with Brian Eno........2006-02-21

After hitting the ground running with their stunning debut, the Talking Heads decided to enlist the assistance of Brian Eno for their second album, "MOre Songs About Buildings and Food". In all likelihood, this was a wise move-- following up a debut as fresh and superb as "Talking Heads '77" was a difficult task, and in Eno they had someone who could grow their music. The partnership would last through the next two Talking Heads albums, a collaborative effort between Eno and Byrne ("My Life in the Bush of Ghosts") and Byrne's "Catherine Wheel". The one thing that's pretty much consistent throughout is that the union of Byrne and Eno produces high results.

In many ways, all Eno did was encourage natural outgrowth from the last album-- certainly the debut record was a quirky and timeless effort and more than a superb springboard to work from and pieces such as "Stay Hungry" (in fact originally attempted for the debut left unused) and "Artists Only" recall the best of '77'. But Eno also seemed to encourage more diversity, pushing the band in a number of different directiosn-- opener "Thank You for Sending An Angel" uses march rhythms and high energy, "With Our Love" hints at Eastern European sounds and the Ramones, "Warning Sign" bubbles with a frantic power that sounds like the successor to Eno's "Third Uncle" and the cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River" slinks into a deep organ groove with Byrne bringing a quite unexpected vocal to the table for the gospel-infused monster (and proved to be the first major exposure the band got). But perhaps closer "The Big Country" is the best of all of them-- Byrne sinks into a more calm and melancholy delivery over a laid back and yet somehow still energetic groove. Like the debut, there's some less than fantastic material, but even that is very listenable ("Found a Job").

This album has just been rereleased in dualdisc format and the sonic upgrade is well worth the extra couple bucks investment.

The collaboration between Brian Eno and the Talking Heads would continue to yield superb results-- in many ways, this is as much a debut as the previous album was, and like the debut, is equally essential. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2006-01-10

"Take me to the River" was the first Talking Heads song I ever heard, being a huge radio hit way back when. I got around to buying this album a couple years later (along with Talking Heads 77) I only wondered "why that song, when there are so many better ones on the record?"
That being said, this album is chock-full of great songs, and with great production to put them across. Worth every cent!

5 out of 5 stars Inventing Situations.......2006-01-10

This is my personal favorite of the Talking Heads CD's I own. Why? It is both playful and lyrical. Each song seems to tell a complete story, with characters, motivations, and conflict. The best example of this on the album is "found a job", explaining how a couple saves their relationshp through creating their own TV shows on a new videocamera. Every song seems to create a complete lyrical and sonic vision, with catchy melodies that make the CD easy to listen to over and over again.

The incomparable Maria Muldaur has always traversed a wide expanse of American music--in 2003, she recorded A Woman Alone with the Blues, a tribute to jazz icon Peggy Lee--and so perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that she has now applied her interpretive gifts to the love songs of Bob Dylan. Choosing from among his classics ("I'll Be Your Baby Tonight") and lesser-known works ("Golden Loom"), Muldaur bravely recasts several songs in disparate grooves (reggae, Cajun, swing), and even allows keyboardist David Torkanowsky to sneak a few bars of the jazz standard "Ain't Misbehavin'" into the end of "Moonlight." As expected, Muldaur is most at home with lazy, country-blues treatments ("Buckets of Rain"). But she can also effectively pull off the intense drama of total sublimation, especially on "Wedding Song" and "Make You Feel My Love," which she renders so tenderly as to elicit a tear. The title track finds her trying to talk herself out of an unsuitable lover, yet one suspects she won't be able to outsmart her heart. On both "Lay Baby Lay" (the gender-switching version of "Lay Lady Lay") and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," she eschews Dylan's urgent and poignant sexuality for sensuality, making both songs a study in how the sexes approach the chemistry of love. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Â"I saw Maria in the great Martin Scorsese documentary about Bob Dylan, No Direction Home,Â" says Elaine Martone, production supervisor for the project. Â"She had recalled many great stories and anecdotes about the early days, and there was some great footage of her performing in the Village in the early Â`60s with the Kweskin Jug Band. I was struck by the fact that sheÂ'd had a direct association with Dylan during his formative years, which I knew because she and I had spoken about from previous conversations. When Bob [Woods, executive producer] approached her about doing a recording of Dylan songs, she narrowed the focus and suggested an album of DylanÂ's love songs. We thought that was an even better idea, and the result is a stirring, sensual album.Â"

Blues and folk chanteuse Maria Muldaur, a contemporary of Bob Dylan during his Greenwich Village heyday of the early Â`60s, brings it all back home by delving into the various ballads and love songs in DylanÂ's rich catalog and interpreting them in her own trademark style. Among the eleven tracks are Â"Buckets in the RainÂ" and Â"Meet Me in the Moonlight Tonight.Â"

5 out of 5 stars very unique.......2007-07-05

What a great combination. If you like Maria Muldaur and you like Bob Dylan, especially his love songs, this is the CD for you! I play if over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Music that appeals to people across generations!.......2007-06-27

I was on vacation when I walked into a small local bookstore and this CD was playing. I KNEW I knew the singer, but couldn't put my finger on the name. I finally asked and found out it was Maria Muldaur. I listened to her alot in college and have listened periodically to her music.
The nice thing about this CD is that it appeals to everyone on this vacation - from the 16 month old to the 78 year old. It has a bluesy sound and very relaxing. Perfect for the beach or after a day at work.

3 out of 5 stars SINGING THE BLUES-ME.......2007-06-19

I have highly praised Maria Muldaur's recent trilogy of covers of classic women blues singers. (see all my reviews) I stated in those reviews that she had paid (and more than paid) her dues to be in the company of Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith and Sippy Wallace. I am also a devoted Bob Dylan fan from way back. Nevertheless I was disappointed in this album. Partly I think that it was overproduced. But I also believe part of the problem is that while Dylan has done many love songs in different formats and in different moods from rage to sentiment I do not believe that overall this is his strongest kind of song. That seems to be reflected here. Take one example- Buckets of Rain- so-so for Maria. The definitive cover for me is Dave Van Ronk's bitter sweet version. If you compare the two covers you will see what I mean. But getting back to the meat of my conflict if you listen to Maria's cover of Sippy Wallace's-Don't Advertise Your Man you then know what blues heaven is. There she is right at home.

3 out of 5 stars Heart of Mine: Love Songs of Bob Dylan - Maria Muldaur.......2007-06-08

Not the gutsy sound that I had expected from Muldaur. Pretty tame.

5 out of 5 stars May I have some more please?.......2007-06-04

For years I have said that the best way to listen to a Bob Dylan song is to find the Joan Baez version. Well Muldaur 's takes are every bit as good and totally different. Baez's crystal clear soprano invites you to think about the words and the lyrics. Muldaur's low, smoky growl grabs you by the emotions and makes you feel them.

Gang of Four went disco, Mission of Burma went deaf--and the Clash? Well, the Clash just went, but Fugazi have managed to escape the pitfalls that befell their predecessors. In fact, the Washington D.C. band formed by Minor Threat's Ian MacKaye and Insurrection's Guy Piccotto may well have become the world's most reliable source of no-sellout noise-pop. 13 Songs brings together the two 1989 EPs that first introduced the group's unique hybrid of hardcore, funk, and art-rock. And while Fugazi's music has since grown in sophistication, fan favorites such as "Waiting Room" and "Margin Walker" are early indicators that something decent can come out of our nation's capital. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Important.........2007-07-18

recording of thE spiritual-equality movement.Hard rock that could be labeled punk I think: Not hardcore or (Wonderful spiritual lyrics..)emo really: A sort of reggae influenced at times punk. "And The Same" off of "Margin Walker" (the one cd on this compilation with "FugazI"..) is a call (Stay alive..Stay balanced anD fair: "Caring"..) to stay awake in this wOrld..Irish and polished sounding displays of equal showcasing of musicianship iS continued in their "Repeater" disc by the way..

5 out of 5 stars One of the best bands ever.......2007-07-07

Waiting Room is one of the best rock songs I have heard in years. Why Fugazi is not all over the radio is beyond me. They are far better than almost any rock band out there now. If you like Fugazi, you should also check out "Tsicavo" by Braintree. Get 'em both, you will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Important record.......2007-05-17

This is an important record in the overall scheme of post-punk recordings. It's not my personal favorite Fugazi record, as Fugazi continued to develop their sound and mature over their next several records, but it's still excellent. While Waiting Room is basically a straight-forward modern rock song with a punk flare, Glue Man and Margin Walker expand the boundaries of what can be expected from a rock record. I've read a number of reviews on this record, and most either laud it as "the greatest" or complain about it being "unoriginal" or "not punk enough." I've already addressed my perspective on this album regarding it being "the greatest" -- there was better to come from Fugazi. As for "unoriginal," it's true that a variety of influences can be heard, from Gang of Four, to Wire, to Mission of Burma, and much more; however, this record (and Fugazi, in general) does not sound specifically like any of these bands, but rather it sounds influenced by these bands, and from my perspective, exhibiting some characteristics of your influences is a basic element of rock music -- you'd be hard-pressed to find a rock band that doesn't. Further, these bands that are cited as being ripped-off by Fugazi really weren't so well-known/well-respected when Fugazi was starting off. Rather, Fugazi's sound has served as a gateway for many fans to discover these older, under-appreciated great bands. As for not being "punk" enough... my attitude on that is, if a band alienates people who critique music based upon how stereotypically "punk" it is, then there's a distinct possibility that the band is more punk than their narrow-minded critics will ever know. This attitude demonstrates a complete ignorance as to the true meaning of "punk." Punk has very little to do with a sound, and much to do with attitude, and an approach to creating, producing and marketing. Besides, why does it have to be "punk"? It's just good music that was unique when it came out, and is still relevant today. This record is essential if you appreciate Fugazi or post-punk, in general. If you're looking for a something that conforms to some preconceived notion of what "punk" sounds like, then this may not be what you're looking for (although I still think that this has something to offer to folks of this persuasion, as well).

Stephen Collins Foster is sometimes called America's first great songwriter, but you could make the case that he was also the country's first real pop star. Writing songs such as "Camptown Races" and "Oh! Susanna," Foster, a college dropout, was self-destructive, couldn't keep a marriage together, and ended tragically. Living on the Bowery, he gashed his throat in a fatal fall in 1864 at age 37, dying with only 38 cents in his pocket. The idea of a Foster tribute record may seem staid and archaic, particularly as his lesser known tunes are parlor and stylized minstrel songs. But minstrelsy was a lot like rock & roll, and the Pittsburgh native left behind an impressive body of work that draws upon the diverse branches of music brought to America by settlers and slaves from Europe and Africa. Beautiful Dreamer, on which 22 artists celebrate 18 of his compositions, surprises with its breadth of subject matter, tempo, and interpretation, including the use of the glass armonica and santour. Most of all, the album is uncommonly soulful--Mavis Staples's dignified but heartbreaking performance of "Hard Times Come Again No More," David Ball's elegiac "Old Folks at Home (Swanee River)," and the feathery rendition of "Slumber, My Darling" by Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor resonate in both the heart and the head. If Foster, the pop star, were alive today, he'd likely sit at the piano in shades and gelled-up hair. But he'd be playing these same songs, timeless and achingly poignant. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Although America's first great songwriter, Stephen Collins Foster, died 140 years ago, his legacy lives on in the hundreds of songs he left behind. Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster was recorded to celebrate his enormous gift to American culture. Foster's compositions (including "Oh! Susanna," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Camptown Races," "Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" and "Hard Times Come Again No More") are woven into the fabric of our national identity, yet most music fans today know little about him. Foster has been unjustifiably overlooked in recent decades. No collection of his music recorded by contemporary artists has existed until now. Although tribute albums have become much too common, this project's historical significance distingusihes it from a crowded field.

Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs Of Stephen Foster is a collection of Foster's most beloved compositions - and lesser-known exquisite parlor songs of his day - sung by some of today's most respected musical artists. The album includes songs by: Raul Malo, Alison Krauss with Yo Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, BR549, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Judith Edelman, The Duhks, John Prine, Henry Kaiser, Beth Nielsen Chapman, David Ball, Michelle Shocked & Pete Anderson, Grey De Lisle, Mavis Staples, Ollabelle, Roger McGuinn, Suzy Bogguss, Will Barrow and Ron Sexsmith.

All of the proceeds from Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster will benefit American Roots Publishing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving American regional culture through literature and art. Goals are accomplished by supporting artists who honor regional culture through their work and by linking them with communities in focused educational programs.

5 out of 5 stars Moving Modern Update to Classic American Songs.......2007-05-11

This collection is a thrilling and moving presentation of the core of American music, uniquely updated with new rhythms and insturments. The "Hard Times Come Again No More", by Mavis Staples, alone is worth the price. The rest of the songs are free.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album.......2007-04-05

This is a beautiful piece of work, obviously a labor of love for all involved. You can hear for yourself that Stephen Foster practically invented the modern song. How incredibly far ahead of his time he was. What other 19th century songwriter has received this kind of reverent modern tribute in the past 50 years??

My favorite track is No One to Love, which will break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars One hundered sixty years melted away........2007-03-20

The songs of Stephen Foster are as pertinent today as they were when he originally wrote them. "Beautiful Dreamer" and "I Dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair" float you away on a cloud of delight. In most instances, the powerful melodies and charming lyrics are not dated at all. The perfomers are some of the best around from our national treasure and keeper of the folk art, Roger McGuinn to the lesser known Raul Malo everyone brings to the CD the best of their wonderful abilities. The Duhks version of "Camptown Races is great and belies its Civil War era origins and Michelle Shocked and Pete Anderson's "Oh, Suzanna" makes you think it was just written. Buy this one for your collection or just to listen. J.Micheal Lelis

5 out of 5 stars Missing one song.......2007-01-17

This is a very easy album to hear. I do wish "Old Black Joe" had been included. It is such a mournful song.

I read somewhere the short lifetime of Steven Foster's earned him about $15,000.00 for his song writing!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful eclectic collection.......2007-01-11

I am thoroughly enjoying this CD. Some of the songs are Stephen Foster classics, but others I had never heard before. The artists are quite diverse--again, some are well known (e.g. Allison Kraus) but most are new to me. Many of the arrangements are interesting and original. I especially recommend Mavis Stapleton's rendition of "Hard Times" which is very moving. I bought the CD because I heard this track on the radio.

As the song goes, "Merry Christmas" has already "been said many times, many ways." Diana Krall's Christmas Songs is a worthy--though not particularly unique--addition to the holiday catalog. On it, she excels with an approach mastered long ago: elegant delivery that gives extra polish to a very familiar lineup. Some might find her style frosty at times, but that will come as a relief to those who want their carolers to cut through some of the holiday treacle and create a festive, yet grown-up vibe. And Krall does show off her playful side with little, personal touches. In "Winter Wonderland" she promises to "frolic and play the Canadian way," which should draw smiles from her native land. (That'll mean toasting the holiday with Molson, eh?) Elsewhere, she ends "Jingle Bells" with the girlishly giddy statement, "I'm just crazy about horses." Well…can't argue with that. --Leah Weathersby

Hot babe. Good Jazz.

Helluva voice.

Nice take on some well-worn standards.

This and the Vince Guarldi Charlie Brown Christmas album are the only two Christmas albums that should be given to everybody who ever bought a CD player, Ipod, whatever.

Nice dress.

Elvis Costello (Mr. Diana Krall) better thank God every day.

I proudly listen to this album at non-Christmas times of the year, by the way. When it plays at work, someone almost always stops and says "Who is THAT?"; never "Why are you listening to Christmas music in June?". That's the power of the voice and arrangements we're dealing with, here.

Thank you for coming into my life, if only as a beautiful voice. And what a voice!

2 out of 5 stars If you like Diana Krall you'll probably hate this review........2007-01-26

I love Diana Krall's voice, style, the music she chooses to record, and the polish of her music. I have all her CDs and they're great. So, when I got this CD at Christmas 2005 I was really disappointed. Look, it's OK, I guess, but not up to her usual standards. There's no enthusiasm here (except for the false enthusiasm of her fingernail-on-chalkboard tittering "I'm just crazy 'bout hooorses").

Rather than write it off as just average I decided to give it a whirl again for Christmas '06, and had the same reaction. Guys might like this CD for her recumbent "come hither and unwrap THIS present" look and posture on the CD packaging, but there's little to come hither for inside.
