(snippets and parphrases from various music zine critics) DAN SMOLLA hails from Dekalb, Illinois, and writes joyful (sometimes), emotional (always) and thought-provoking songs with elements of Alt. Country, folk and loose echoes of early '70s Stones flowing through their veins. ...pretty damn engaging and just the right side of oddball. Dan's open-minded enough to mix back-porch acoustics with unusual textures (like the shot of drum machine on;Lucky One or include a full-pelt bar-room rocker a la Replacements in Cheap Restaurant slap in the middle of thehickory-smoked mellow vibes Dan's slightly ramshackle vibe is an important part of his inherent charm. Dan's own bio suggests his music is Kerouac soaked and Swimming In Wind; suggests he shares a similar freewheelin', freestylin' anything-goes attitude. Crucially, though,he promotes this liberation without sacrificing decent tunes.... His music illustrates the fact that if you pick your influences right and take a! longer-term view of the music you make, the results will be something worth revisiting again and again. Some of the most satisfying and genuine .. music you'll ever hear. Smolla has the ability to breath a separate soul into each and every track, while at the same time keeping his ...tour de force down to earth. Artists like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan seem to have been born with this vocal presence, and I think Dan Smolla has it too.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

Bold, ambitious attempt that hits some marks, misses others.......2002-12-06

This is an engaging and unusual integration of Nakai's flute-playing talent with an orchestral accompaniment, creating a romantic, sweeping, and contemplative score that sounds like a motion picture soundtrack in many instances. Nakai's command of the flute never wavers, but sometimes competes, rather than synchronizes with the full-bodied strings that interject themselves almost randomly throughout every piece. When the two mediums cooperate the result is moving and lyrical. One can almost visualize scenes of beauty, mourning, and determination that are the embodiment of Native American existence. But in some places, the music meanders between the two forms creating a neutral, unfocused, and occasionally dispassionate mood.

I applaud Nakai's innovation and experimentation, but I think his strongest work with Western classical music forms is still best demonstrated in his collaborations with pianist Peter Kater, such as "Migrations". Oddly enough, Kater's work with Nakai is not mentioned in the liner notes.

Music to Contemplate By.......2002-12-01

I had never heard any of Nakai's work before buying this CD, so I came to it with no idea of what to expect. The first word that comes to my mind when I play it is "soothing." That describes the first three tracks without need of another word. With the fourth, soft sweeping strings join Nakai's plaintive flute for a feel best described as "floating" or "drifting." The fifth is sweetly mournful. The sixth brings muted brass into play. In the seventh there are moments both majestic and plaintive. And so it goes. This is quiet, thoughtful music, the kind you might play while reading some favorite old "gentle" book or practising your deep breathing. Although I generally prefer more powerful sounds from my stereo, this one is an enjoyable change of pace, and full of Native mysticism.

Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10

As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!

Best CD I own........2003-11-04

I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.

Classical classics.......2002-11-12

The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.

If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.

Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23

Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.
