Sirens second album "Smilin'" features fourteen compelling original songs that weave an infectious and hyptnotic spell. Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13

This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.

A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Blazing Latin Rock.......2007-01-29

The Del Castillo brothers are fantastic guitarists. Fusing flamenco and rock rhythms, they offer intense and often very dancable songs sung passionately by the fantastic singer alex Ruiz. On this, their 3rd album, they cut back on the instrumentals and feature more singing, some in English. Willie Nelson guests on one song,"I never cared for you".I saw them live last year and picked this disc up after the show. If they come to a club near you, see them! They are fantastic live.They are also featured on the "once upon a time in Mexico" soundtrack and the "chingon" disc.

The best what to Latin music at the moment has to offer. Music with high electricity and tension, burning and passionate guitar play, a virtuoso voice and the whole coated with a being intoxicating rhythm. Latin Music of finest ones. Very sadly that one cannot experience Del Castillo in Germany on the stage and not receive your CD.

There's no doubt about it, these guys are about to become a phenomenon. A latin group that sings mainly in Spanish, but that reaches you even if you don't speak a word. That's real passion.

The singing on this CD will move you from joy to tears and back again, the guitar playing will astound you, and the rhythms will touch your soul. Sound too good to be true? Believe me...I haven't done it justice!

I had never heard of Del Castillo until a few days ago when they appeared at the Pittsburgh Art Festival. I can honestly say that they are by far one of the best bands I have ever seen. The stage presence is spectacular, the songs are terrific, and the guitar playing is indescribable. I promptly purchased this CD at the show and I love it. I am eagerly awaiting the other two previous CDs. I can't rave enough about Del Castillo. I hope they get the fame and recognition that they deserve as they far surpass the popular bands that we typically hear all over the radio (and television) waves.

Wet Willie was, after the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the hardest-rocking of the Southern bands to come to national attention in the early 1970s. For seven years, from 1971 until 1978, they produced an enviable array of albums awash in good-time music, rollicking high-energy blues-rock, and white Southern soul, and for their trouble they racked up just one Top Ten hit 'Keep On Smilin'' (included here) - and a lot of admirers. Supernatural?.......2007-05-11

This is an amazing CD. Having seen these guys perform a couple of times, and being a guitarist myself, I have this to add to the other reviews: On the CD you will hear some of the most complex and technically proficient classical guitar work that has ever been recorded. But when you see them live, you understand that these guys cannot possibly be human, because a great deal of that material is played by *both* Rick and Mark del Castillo *simultaneously* and in perfect synchronization. I literally could not believe what I was seeing. Catch them live, if you can.

This is fine electric and acoustic music, sometimes soft , sometimes hard.

Stop Reading and Get This Right Now!.......2005-09-15

I have been a big Del Castillo fan for a while, and I am continually impressed by their energy and sheer technical skills, especially in concert. I'm a displaced Austinite (in DC) and I just saw them perform at the Kennedy Center. Though there were several musical performances going on at the time, Del Castillo was like a magnet to the crowds, and they were mobbed after the show. I'm sure this was the first time many in the crowd had heard them, and the whole crowd was mesmerized the whole show. Which illustrates the difference between DCites and Austinites -- where the heck was the dancing??

Alejandro's vocals are sharp and smoky, and he has a great stage presence. Rick and Mark, the eponymous Del Castillo brothers, are a force of nature on their guitars. Part of the treat of a live show is watching their fingers go into hyperdrive. These guys are pure talent, and the musicality is apparent everywhere. Some of the most evocative music comes from their slower-paced, sadness-tinged number. I met Rick after the show, and he's a great, unassuming guy, almost like you and me, except he can tear up a guitar like nobody's business and produce some of the best Latin sounds to boot. The whole band is top notch, especially the percussion on numbers like "Suenos Madrigales".

This is my second copy of "Vida". I loaned my previous one and it never came back. I should have seen that one coming. But music this good needs to be shared.

Get this CD. You'll be glad you did. I can't believe you spent all that time reading this stuff, when "Vida" could be on it's way to you right now!! Go! Hurry!!

Excellent, but where's the DVD?.......2005-04-30

I'm familiar with lead singer David Alejandro Ruiz from his days with the late and highly under-appreciated Austin band Melting Picassos. It's great to hear his promise fullfilled in this recording. Don't let the fact that it is almost completely Spanish language keep you from listening - it's exciting music in any language and you can find the English lyrics on the Del Castillo webstite. Please note that the DVD referred to in several of the reviews is no longer packaged with this CD.

If you're a fan of Carlos Santana, Paco de Lucia, Al diMeola, Tomatito or any other flamenco-inspired music this CD is a must have. The DVD (2.0 and 5.1)included with VIDA is worth the purchase price. Unfortunately there are no samples here on Amazon, but you can go to the Del Castillo website and listen.

When I discovered Rockapella had a summertime themed recording, I wanted to purchase it immediately. However, all the negative reviews here at Amazon put me on my guard (I take reviews very seriously). But after mulling it over for a few weeks (and listening to the sound samples over and over), I decided I couldn't resist. I had to have the album. I was not disappointed, people! This is good stuff! If you're a Rockapella fan at ALL, you should absolutely purchase this incredible album. I've listened to it for days at a time and have found it to be gorgeous from beginning to nearly the end (not a fan of Surfin' Safari even though I adore The Beach Boys).

Is it just me or do some of these reviews sound like the blatherings of failed artists who have chosen a life of destroying rather than creating? Ignore the hateful, verbose reviews of people like "ajpiscitello" and listen to the samples yourself. It's a fun album and worth a try.

I suppose you can never go back in time, but I sure wish the Rockapellians could. Back to the days of Barry, Sean, and Elliot. The new version of Rockapella that shows up on this CD pales in comparison to the vocal prowess of the Scott, Jeff, Sean, Barry, and Elliot concoction.

This CD was full of cover versions of old "Summer" songs with a few thrown together new ones. The one bright light of this whole cd would be the aforementioned Shambala, which is incredible, with 7 Rockapella members. I bought the album the day it came out, and this was my only reason for keeping it.

If you really want Rockapella, pick up 2, or In Concert (Forget about Live in Japan - don't get me started on that!!)

DO IT ROCKAPELLA!.......2004-06-02

This is a great CD! It may not be the best there is, but it is certainly better than some of the music I've heard lately. It blends old-time classics like Shambala to modern songs, like Surfin' Safari. Whether you're listening to it in the car, or if you're just listening to it while you're sitting around, it's the ultimate summer CD.

I think I don't exaggerate if I compare Del Castillo to Great Los Lobos!
This is fine electric and acoustic music, sometimes soft , sometimes hard.
There is not very much information on booklet, but you can

This is a wonderful effort by the Del Castillo brothers and their band. Mark and Rick are great guitarists and the band is one of the best that I have ever heard. I hate that anyone would compare them to the Gypsy Kings or Strunz and Farrah, because I believe they (Del Castillo) are far superior. Even though I am a huge fan of Santana, I think Brothers of the Castle and Vida are more entertaining and satisfying than Santana's last CD. If you are a fan of this genre, you should possess both Del Castillo CD's.....Brothers of the Castle and Vida. Their live show is among the best that I have ever seen.

This is my favourite Del Castillo album, probably because Mi Carino was the first song I saw them perform and was all I needed to get hooked. Lots of people have compared them to Gipsy Kings and Santana, but there's something about Del Castillo that makes them unique. Even better than listening to the CD is watching them live. Alex's performances are so full of explosive energy and Rick and Mark's finale is always mind-blowing! I was lucky enough to catch them at the Steamboat several times (before it closed) and also at other local Austin events (Pecan Street festival, etc), and they're always amazing.

My advice - buy the album, (you'll definitely be blown away!) then go watch them live if you get a chance. If you don't, go to their website (www.delcastillomusic.com) and buy the DVD. I doubt you'll regret it.

More Texas Guitar Heroes.......2004-08-06

Texas has produced more than its share of virtuoso guitar players. Among those that come to mind are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Junior Brown, and Gatemouth Brown just to name a few. I hadn't heard of Del Castillo until just the other day when I happened to hear some of their music on Austin's KGSR alternative radio station. Since at the time I just happened to be heading to Waterloo Records, an Austin music institution, I stopped and picked out a couple of CDs amongst which was Brothers of the Castle.
When I played it through the first time, I was reminded of many other groups. Strunz and Farah and the Gipsy Kings are two that immediately came to mind. But Del Castillo is far from being a clone of other Latin and Nouveau Flamenco groups out there vying for listener dollars. They definitely stand tall on their own.
My favorites here are the instrumentals that showcase the considerable guitarrista talents of Rick and Mark del Castillo. Their skill and musical sensibilities are most apparent on Spanish Castle Tango, Mexican Lounge Lizard, and Barrio Blues. That last shows the brothers are capable of reaching beyond the Latin jazz niche into the world of blues, and they do one heck of a job at it. In addition to those mentioned, the CD closes strongly with a dazzling full-band workout on El Camino Menos Transitado.
As for vocals, my favorite is on Mi Carino. Only the utterly lame vocals and weak songwriting on La Luz a Mi Paso and Suenos de Ti prevent this early effort by del Castillo from achieving five stars.
Apparently, the group is already locally famous in the Austin area. Now its up to the rest of the country to get ready to hear more Texas guitar heroes.

One of Butterfield's better albums.......2003-03-19

This was the last Butterfield Blues Band studio album. To me it is tied for third best with "Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw"--the band's "Butterfield Blues Band" and "East West" are their two greatest albums to me. However, this is a very enjoyable, excellent album, a big step up from "In My Own Dream" and "Keep On Movin'". Butterfield sings and plays harmonica very well. The compositions are strong. The group is really tight and together, with the horns integrated better with the rest of the group than on any other album. In terms of something you can enjoy on repeated listens, it is a very successful album. If only the group could have continued on from this point, who knows what continued heights they could have hit.
