Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying collection of familiar & less often heard tunes.......2006-06-03

Good to have this sampler; like many buyers, I have some of these tracks already, and am very familiar with them. But I wanted to hear, for instance, what skiffle actually sounded like, how the elusive--and impossible to find on CD outside his homeland it seems--Davy Graham played, and how people I'd read about like the Dransfields compared to the more familiar Fairport, Steeleye, and the like from the latter 60s. The Steeleye "Skewball"is not the track I'd have picked from their early incarnation, but for the most part the songs represent their makers effectively. For me, rarer selections would have been more appealing, but this is marketed at listeners wanting, I presume, an introduction and not a specialized issue, and for that customer this works well, especially for an American audience for whom many of these tracks might not be so well-known or easily obtained at a decent price, forty-ish years on.

I usually avoid compilations when I have half the songs on other albums, but I'm happy I made the exception, and given the recording shortcomings, lyrics that have not always worn well (Incredible String Band the worst offender, sorry for all those acid folk revivalists), and a rather charmingly dated marriage of folk and trippier sounds as you'd expect from songs from the later 60s, this is intelligently sequenced and a welcome sampler of the more and less familiar that any Brit-folk fan will enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Intro to British Folk.......2000-01-15

While it's not as traditional as I had hoped, "Troubadours of British Folk: Vol. 1" is nonetheless a good introduction to the genre. The recordings span from the 50's, starting with the original recordings of "Rock Island Line" (which Johnny Cash later made famous) and "Dirty Old Town" (covered by The Pogues), up to the mid-70's(?). The excellent Shirley & Dolly Collins track is an interesting (and I believe rare) version of "Rambleaway", featuring Christopher Hogwood on the harpsichord. I found the songs by The Fairport Convention, Bert Jansch, & Anne Briggs to be standouts as well. Even though a few get a bit too hippy-dippy for my liking, this is overall a good solid compilation.
