Following up on the release of his debut CD, The Voice, Russell Watson is back with Encore, another mix of opera favorites and popular songs. By now Watson has become virtually a household name--he sells out large concert venues and remains on the top-seller charts. On Encore, we find Puccini and Verdi sharing the billing with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie on the CD's 16 tracks, which range from the much-loved Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme for Enterprise (the latest Star Trek TV series). Indeed, a more fitting title might have been The Voices, since Watson explores opera, sacred works, film, television themes, and pop songs. The orchestral arrangements on tracks such as "Va, Pensiero" may not win him any fans from the opera contingency, but Watson reveals a captivating sound on pop ballads, including "You Are So Beautiful" and "Somewhere." If you enjoyed The Voice, you're certain to want an encore. --Rebecca AgnewCustomer Reviews:

"Vision--The Music of Hildegard von Bingen"? Make that "Hildegard--the Dance Remix." (Yes, it has been used on the dance floor of at least one New York City nightclub.) What else can you call it when Richard Souther takes the stark, ecstatic plainchant of the 12th-century abbess and adds heavily produced electronic trance-and-dance tracks? Souther's additions aren't bad in themselves--they are a bit New Age-y, yet danceable in a druggy 3:00-a.m. kind of way--but slather them over Hildegard's spare, intense chant melodies and the effect is perverse, if not just silly. Don't blame poor Emily van Evera--she is a fine interpreter of Hildegard, and EMI simply asked her to record some unaccompanied solo tracks of the abbess's music and send in the tapes; she had no idea what was going to be done with them until this disc came out with her name on it. This shows up in the final product: the gently fluid pulse van Evera applied to Hildegard's music (which would make perfect sense in the a cappella performance she thought she was giving) feels completely disconnected from the rigid rhythms inherent in Souther's electronic accompaniment. Now, there are a number of customer reviews, below, from listeners who like this title a great deal--have a look at them, check out the sound clips, and by all means get this title if you're interested. But, if you're curious about Hildegard, go to the recording that made her famous eight centuries after her death: A Feather on the Breath of God. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:

"Every Element Has A Sound" ~ Heavenly Visions Of A Medieval Mystic.......2006-01-29
Similiar yet subtly different from the lofty, remote gregorian chants sung in the monastery, the music of Hildegard is much more accessible. Her experience of the 'Divine Mysteries' is conveyed in more emotional and earthy tones, thus linking the higher aspirations of the soul with the passionate nature of the human heart.
'Vision' was performed and recorded within the stone walls of St. Andrew's Church in Toddington, England, an almost perfect location to capture the medieval atmosphere of Hildegard's compositions. The female voices involved in this project are a sharp and welcome contrast to the all male gregorian choirs most of us are more familiar with.
Truly a mystical musical experience has been captured on these 17 exquiste tracks. For the spiritual seeker in all of us!

Customer Reviews:
Why do people hate this album??? 8 out of 10.......2007-05-14
THE PACKAGING: Instead of the demon mascot Murray that graced the jacket art on the previous two Dio releases, sacred heart instead features a dragon inside of a crystal ball. Very cool. The minimalist liner notes include a track listing, credits, and printed lyrics for the title track.
THE BAND: The same band that played on Last In Line is also featured here. Vinnie Appice pounds the skins, Jimmy Bain thumps the low notes, Claude Schnell tickles the ivories, Vivian Campbell twiddles the strings, and Ronnie James Dio shrieks to the heavens.
THE SOUND: This would be the last album to feature guitarist Vivian Campbell. While his playing is still excellent, it has to be said that it lacks the exuberance of his work on Holy Diver and Last In Line. He sounds as if he isn't really interested anymore. The virtuoso rhythm team of drummer Vinny Appice and bassist Jimmy Bain lays down solid, powerful and inventive grooves every bit as effectively as in the past, and Ronnie James Dio sings like the metal god that he is. Keyboardist Claude Schnell is featured much more prominently than before, making his presence felt with arching chords and textural bits that add a great deal to the semi-mystical aura. It should be noted that the increased use of keyboards is one of the major criticisms that fans level at this album, but I think in this case it works well. The album is well-recorded with RJD doing an excellent job on the production. For all the people clamoring for a remaster I'll simply quote Bob Dylan: "Modern production makes records sound bad." The recording is fine as it is.
THE SONGS: The songwriting isn't as consistent here as it was on the first two releases but fortunately there's a lot more good than bad; the first six songs are all great. "King Of Rock'n'Roll" is a great opener, the epic "Sacred Heart" features a standout vocal performance and a killer riff, and "Another Lie" just rocks. The best track here is "Rock'n'Roll Children", with a great melody and a lyrical theme similar to earlier classics like "Invisible" or "One Night In The City". I even like "Hungry For Heaven" despite it's somewhat pop-oriented flavor. "Like The Beat Of A Heart" is a great stomp-rocker. Things fall off a little bit after this. "Just Another Day" and "Fallen Angels" are good tracks but nothing special and "Shoot Shoot" is really pretty dreadful.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Of the three albums to feature the original Dio lineup this one is definitely the weakest. But that doesn't make it bad; the first two were metal masterpieces and NOBODY that I can think of maintains those kind of standards for three consecutive albums. Buy this for sure; the first six tracks will make you happy, the next two aren't that bad, and who knows... some people actually like "Shoot Shoot".

Dio Runs Out of Steam.......2007-01-03
With the exception of a few tracks, i.e. "King of Rock n' Roll" and "Another Lie", Dio is not singing with the same intensity that grabs you in songs like "Holy Diver" and "Man on the Silver Mountain". Rather, most of his efforts are pretty bland and it is really a waste for a singer of his caliber. Other problems also dominate the record--Vivian Campbells play-by-number approach on the record, mediocre songs that go on too long without any really catchy melody, and boring lyrics.
Despite these weaknesses I think you should give it a chance. "King of Rock n' Roll" is an intense rocker and "Another Lie" is Dio at his finest. There is even a suprise in "Rock n' Roll Children" with its haunting keyboards to accentuate the melody. Although Dio didn't truly use this technique to great effect on this record, the experiment started here was definitely perfected on "Dream Evil". Besides that, most of the other songs on here like "Shoot Shoot" are just plain filler that aren't worth the price of the album.
It is clear on this record that both Vivian and Dio had run out of creative steam and it was time to move on. Luckily the marriage ended here and Craig Goldie would come along to give Dio a serious shot in the arm on the follow up "Dream Evil". If you want to purchase another good Dio record I would advise getting that one and listening to this record once to see which songs are worth downloading.
All of the bashing is completely unjustified, and here's why..........2006-10-03
1) Cheesiness: Of course the album has its cheesy moments, but so does every other single Dio album!!! This one is certainly no more cheesy than others. It's the nature of this band; if you can't handle it, then go listen to Limp Bizkit or any other [...] currently in vogue.
2) Keyboards-There is absolutely no excessive use of keyboards on this album! As a matter of fact, there is actually less use of keys on Sacred Heart than some other Dio releases. Anyone ever listen to Dream Evil??? That album is saturated with synths and I don't hear anyone complaining as harshly with that one.
3) "Uninspired"-This criticism has been applied mostly to Viv Campbell; yes his guitar playing is more restrained and conservative on Sacred Heart-but it's still just as good as ever! I mean, come on, how many albums does the guy have to shred on to prove he's one bad mutha??? Clearly, Dio's first two albums serve as enough confirmation.
So there it is, my case for Sacred Heart, and album just as worthy as all other Dio classics. So just get it, especially if you're an established fan who has been holding back.

As the line in the opening track, "The Peanut Vendor", says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong." And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew GreenCustomer Reviews:
King's Singers Debut.......2007-01-12
Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02
The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?
It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.
Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.
The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.
Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.
Highly recommended. Timeless music.
This is vintage King's Singers!.......2001-06-09
This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!
I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

It would probably be better to rename it and put a different picture on the cover that would be less insulting to the people it's making a mockery of and more suitable to the disco minded crowd it's apparently trying to foster.

INDITING OF A GOOD MATTER.......2006-07-08
Back to Zadok. Please forgive a possible appearance of dogmatism if I say that the tempo is absolutely right. Cleobury's speed here is much as I remember it from the recording of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It may be faster than one is used to, but there is a very good reason for it. Even at this speed, that spine-tingling orchestral introduction takes a full minute and 20 seconds to reach the great choral chords, and it measures out the tread of the monarch and consort, one stately pace to every four notes, as they advance towards the altar steps in Westminster Abbey, the choral outburst coming as they arrive at them. The choral tone here is very full and grand. I would have been interested to know whether Cleobury has used a larger chorus at this point than later - on one occasion Handel is known to have had 500 performers in Zadok. There are certainly not 500 here, and Handel's choral writing can convey an impression of multitudes even with a smallish choir. From this point on the chorus is appropriately small, clear in its diction and even, to my delight, producing a trill on `ever'. The other three anthems are beautifully done and beautifully recorded. There are various Alleluias in the first three including Zadok, and here, as in the great chorus in Messiah, Handel scans the word sometimes as All-e-LU-ia and sometimes as All-eh-EH-lu-IA. He learned the latter way of doing it from Purcell, and 150 years after Handel's anthems Brahms uses it again in his great Triumphlied celebrating the battle of Sedan.
The words to the birthday ode are by Ambrose Phillips. They are the usual sycophantic rubbish, but `twas ever thus. In days of old such toweringly great poets as Horace and Pindar had turned out equally wince-making sentiments, they just expressed them a lot better. The music is another matter, being simply exquisite. I have been familiar with these three soloists in Handel for a couple of years now, and what a pleasure it is to listen to such perfect singing and perfect sense for the composer's style. The opening number is a heavenly duet for counter-tenor and trumpet. I was very let down at not seeing the trumpeter credited in the liner. It may be Crispian Steel-Perkins (it's good enough to be him) but we are not told. The choir of King's, the Academy of Ancient Music and the director need no introduction by now, and are at their superlative best throughout.
The liner-note, by Anthony Hicks, is helpful, informative and readable, and is given in German and French as well as in English, as are the texts to the music. The recording is really very good too, except that I was eager for just that last ounce of `presence' at the start of Zadok that would have made this disc absolutely perfect for me. The set dates from 2001 I see, so perhaps it will be reissued sometime with a little remastering, fulfilling one of my remaining aspirations in this life.

Simply Amazing!.......2004-03-16
As a music piece the selections from this compilation should be deservidly included with other masterpieces such as Mahler's Resurection, and Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.
This recording is very much worth the money!!

Good But Not Haunting Or Mysterious........2005-02-27
How can anyone one not like it,it's very beautiful and it's been around for 1400 years how can one say that singer songwriter stuff which no one will remember in 50 years be better then this it's like seeing heaven and saying you prefer the world(alot of people unfortunatly do this.) Though to ansewer the question of it being to sad yes it is very somber and mournful but thats because the sacrifice of mass is a very solemn ceromony it was never meant to be celebrated in rock or jazz or polka or any other abuses by certain clergy. If alot of these ignorant catholics only knew what took place at the mass they would understand. You know you should be proud of the fact you are catholic because we have many gifts the protestants don't have(In the sacrements, the liturgy, the art and the music.) So I say to you now even you prefer the vernacular have respect and appreciation of what came before you in are Holy Catholic Church. Oh by the way I am 19 about to be 20 and Vatican II was a good thing it retouched are faith as Cardinal Francis Aziz said. Though I believe many people misinterpret it.
I suggest watching EWTN alot or really studying your faith and I like both Novus Ordo And Tridentine Rite.
More of a rant not a review but these songs have there moments and there are many Vernacular songs I like.
Dominus Vobiscum.
Et Cum Spirtu Tuo.
Very Good Traditional Hymns.......2004-05-30
Some of the other songs were better done by other artists. Like Shepherd Me is done better by the original Marty Haugen. This version is good, but not as good as Marty's. And I was not particularly fond of this version of Amazing Grace.
Overall I would recommend you buy a copy for your collection. The songs which are good, are very good.
Disappointing.......2004-04-01
Yes, these are great Catholic songs.......2004-02-07

It seems pretty clear that Ronan Tynan has no intention of resting on his laurels. Despite a stunning string of world-dominating, top-selling releases as a member of the much-loved Irish Tenors--not to mention his accomplishments as a champion athlete, an M.D., and a memoirist (see his recently published Halfway Home: My Life 'til Now)--the singer has now released his debut solo effort on Sony Classical. No matter which member of the Irish Tenors happens to be your favorite, My Life Belongs to You is a treat, affording as it does a chance to bask in the deeply expressive, mellifluous voice of Tynan. He has chosen his selections well and is equally poised and tender in classics from Mario Lanza ("Because You're Mine," "I'll Walk with God"), Broadway, and sacred music. What's especially wonderful is the opportunity to hear Tynan's emotionally gripping vocalism from so many angles. The mixing by Frank McNamara gives a lovely old-time feeling to the orchestral playing--a bit like a treasured old sepia photograph. A bonus track of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" is included. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:
