5 out of 5 stars Good News; It's Great.......2007-07-16

Ok, a non-Forbert fan may not like this stuff, but the real trick is not just liking this music but 'getting' it. Since the singles-era of his early music, SF's work has not been written nor produced for mass consumption. Of course, Big Macs are made for mass consumption, and look at what those do to you. So, with the recognition that this album might have a limited audience, this is a GREAT Forbert album. I was pleased to discover that SF is still writing clever and honest music, and while his sound is still a little overly-produced for me (too many back-up vocals and tamborines sometimes), this album has some wonderful rhythms and sounds. Favorites are The Baghdad Dream (not an in your face anti-war song, as much as a "what is going over there?" rocker), I Will Sing Your Praises (a surprising creationist hymn, SF style), Thirty More Years (a great composition around SF's now-familiar theme of life passing by . . .), and Simply Spalding Gray. Then there is the fresh re-do of one of pop music's greatest all-time hits, Romeo's Tune. What a gift. He must have performed this a million times in the last 25 years, and he delivers it here with appropriate energy and relevance. GREAT ALBUM!

Steve Forbert has included a new version of Romeos Tune on this new CD. And most of the CD is in that musical genre so to speak.Steve Forbert has included a new version of Romeos Tune on this new CD,and most of the CD is in that musikal "hummin genre" so to speak. This is a musikal gem overall, that become better and better with more listning. Then suddenly it bang`s into your`e soul, and leave some musical angeldust in your ear. Track 1 Middel Age is a typical Forbert gem. Walkabout rythm with a very hummin` tune. Happinnes speaks all over the track. Track 2 Strange Names follow up the "feel" and credibility of the previous track. Not edgy, but very earfriendly, and enjoyable to listen too. Track 3 Simply spalding gray it`s an another cup of tea. This has a touch of irish roots in the intro, but it demands quite more from you. A minor letdown in my ears. Track 4 Man, i miss that girl, brings us more or less back on the track again. Forbert voice had so much pain and feel alltrough. Quality shines. Track 5 You`re meant for me is in typical Forbert territory. It`s romantic, have a certain feel, and drizzel angeldust in your`e earchannels. Track 6 I will sing your praise, is the one with the spinal marrow cord touch. The one you can feel. Track 7 Something special, it`s more cliche ridden in a way. A minor letdown, but a good listen anyway. Anyway. The harmonica lifts it up above average. Track 8 My seaside Brown-eyed girl, has a very open soundpicture, where the instrument`s drizzel here and there and makes`it complete. Track 9 Baghdad Dream is the "rock and roller" on the CD. A mood changer, but it works.Lyricks are extremly good on this one, and yes it`s about the Irak war. Track 10 Thirty More Years, it`s a so so track. Average, but quite interesting. Track 11 Around the bend is the uplifting one. Brings joy to your`e heart. It`s instrumental, but hey who cares. It has that "x- factor". Track 12 Romeo`s tune. Greatness shines. What more can you say about Forbert`s biggest hit ever. This one has it all. Enjooooooy. All in all a great album, but some of the tracks are a minor letdown. But it`s a safe buy anyway. Forbert has quality, and never go out of style.....

4 out of 5 stars A must for Forbert fans.......2007-06-30

My first impression when I first listened to the CD was that it, (unlike other rescent Forbert albums), was a little too soft around the edges. And although the songs were great, I felt the music supporting them didn't fully extract the richness from them. However after keeping it in my car for a few days, It really grew on me, and now I accept it for what it is and as another Forbert masterpiece.
If the first listening doesn't hook you, the second one will. Or the third... Maybe fourth.

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Harmer's 2000 debut, You Were Here, was justifiably lauded and it made her a star in her homeland, racking up platinum sales. Four years later she's brought forth an equally engaging set of 11 finely honed songs. After the friendly mid-tempo opener and its tale of roaming the countryside in winter, she fearlessly kicks up the decibel meter with the smartly propulsive "Almost," presenting a lustful crush with appropriate passion and the wallop of a rocker. Throughout it all, Harmer has a gifted eye for the small details that give human scale and resilience to the lyrics. The sense of place evoked is unmistakably linked to her home in Ontario's Quaker Valley, and perhaps not surprisingly, All of Our Names was recorded primarily at her rural abode. The album has all the breadth and depth of a work created in a big-city studio, but it also exudes a warmth and intimacy that can be attributed to the care and comfort afforded by the setting. --David Greenberger

Album Description

In 2000, Sarah Harmer released one of the year's most critically acclaimed albums with her beautiful and personal You Were Here. TIME called it "The year's best debut," raves from Rolling Stone, Billboard, and many others poured in, and Sarah Harmer became a star in her native Canada with her first Platinum record. Now, 4 years later, Sarah Harmer has delivered on the promise of You Were Here with All of Our Names, 11 stunning new songs from one of today's finest singer-songwriters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Elegant melodies, well recorded, terrific lyrics.......2006-08-11

Sarah Harmer has a real knack for describing everyday scenes and emotions with a wry humor and sometimes stark realism. The backing of her band lays down unusual, sometimes sparse, sometimes thick underpinnings for the songs that make the whole thing just, ... clean and beautiful. These are songs you don't get tired of. These are songs you enjoy more, and hear more IN, each time you listen to them.

I'm a huge fan of Kathleen Edwards, and I'd still have to give her the nod because she has a bit more ability to spice up her song mix with more rocked up tunes. But this is an excellent CD. I also have "All of Our Names" and, like some other reviewers, don't understand the knocks about this one being a step down. If anything, I like this one more.

4 out of 5 stars Her Voice! Her Voice! Her Voice!.......2006-07-26

Sarah Harmer's voice is so serene and easy to listen to that sometimes I will listen to the same song over and over again. My favorite track is "Almost," because I feel that it really captures a moment and a feeling.

I also think its cool that Harmer records all her music at her house, and that she spends days on ends producing these songs. This is definitely a CD to buy!

3 out of 5 stars Just a little short.......2005-07-30

Well, after falling in love with the album 'You Were Here', I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. After listening through it, I was a little dissappointed. I still think Sarah is one great singer/songwriter, but this album left me longing for something more. I agree with the review that said this album felt like one big song. She has some amazing lyrics, but musically the songs were much too similar for me. It's almost like she didn't want to strecth herself with this CD and kept to familiar themes. I guess 'You were here' will still be the album to beat.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still great.......2005-07-11

I own every Sarah Harmer and weeping tile album ever produced. Sarah is an excellent musician, with great talent. Her songs are heartfelt and strong, and still simple and pleasing. However, All of Our Names is not my favorite of all of her releases. The songs are not as catchy, and they sound more mainstream. There is less definition and fewer differences between the individual songs than on her previous albums. To me, this makes it sound like the whole CD is one song, which I don't like. If you are looking for a mainstream-sounding adult alternative pop album, buy this CD. However, I prefer her older album, You Were Here, because the songs feel stronger and more defined. If you do not own any Sarah Harmer CDs, I would recommend first Buying You Were Here. This is still a great album and should not be missed, but it is not as good as her previous works.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-03-25

Beautiful songs, quietly observant and poingant. The melodies are simple and unfussed. A genius cd.

I could listen to Harmer's lovely voice on a Gibson guitar all day long. It leaves me with the feeling akin to having woken up from really great dream. The songs contain the perfect mix of alt country, pop and folk sensibilites. You may need all your fingers and toes to count the different directions her lyrical musing take you.

4 out of 5 stars ANJANI SACRED NAMES - SO SO.......2007-02-04

Should have guessed by the title, it is a bit too far on the worship-music side for my liking, kind of choir-like. Anjani's voice is always superb, no complaints ever about that, just that this is not her usual style and nowhere near jazz-like. Good for a kid's lullabye music cd.

1 out of 5 stars Unmoved.......2006-11-06

Monotonous and lack luster performances; the words and lyrics do not resonate with an authenticity. A total drag to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Putting on the garment of His Presence.......2005-01-30

Anjani Thomas contributes her lovely voice to Leonard Cohen's masterpiece Dear Heather, adding a touch of the sublime to songs like On That Day (They Wounded New York) and Nightingale. This uplifting album of her own songs is a work of devotion in praise of our Judeo-Christian God.

As such, it mirrors the work of the Psalmist. Anjani plays keyboards and guitar while bass and percussion round of the sound, which is mostly gentle and acoustic. The moving Kyrie Eleison is sung in Greek, whilst Yoshua is a blend of Hebrew and English and the gripping Ari Shemot contains Hebrew, Portuguese and English in a seemless blend of beauty.

The song Praise is an invocation of divine and angelic names like Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel and Michael, a gentle but powerful prayer. Another of my favourites is the comforting and reassuring Yeshurun and the exultant Blessing where her voice really soars on the most beautiful melody on the album. In style, this one in fact reminded me of the early work of folk legend Judy Collins.

The last two tracks are quite mystical and gnostic, YHVH being especially enchanting with awesome comforting and healing emanations. This song would be ideal for devotional activities like meditation and prayer. In this regard, interested listeners might want to investigate Jonathan Goldman's CD Holy Harmony: Healing Code Tuning Forks And Ancient YHSVH Chant.

Those who love Van Morrison in his more spiritual moments, or the classical work Tehillim (Psalms) by Steve Reich, will definitely love this graceful work of devotion. Amongst female artists, this spiritual undertone is also present in the work of vocalists like Emmylou Harris, Jennifer Warnes and Jane Siberry.

The CD case contains a glossary of Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Syriac (Aramaic) terms. The Sacred Names is a real find, and I thank Leonard Cohen who, by using Anjani's voice on his latest album, put me on her trail. Let all that breathe praise the Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Names.......2003-02-10

I am not a religious man. But I highly appreciate this CD.
All her songs are very comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-10-28

Anjani takes a different approach on her sophomore release, The Sacred Names, produced with Leonard Cohen. Using her delicate harmonies and talent as a keyboardist, Anjani sings her praises to the Lord. But don't expect the usual Christian album here. Anjani continues to include her Hawaiian/Jazz/Folk influences, making The Sacred Names stand out from contemporary Christian releases.

I have nine Guano Apes CD's. Certainly the "Planet Of The Apes" has the cream of the crop, which is where I would point ANY first time buyer of the apes. BUT if you already know & like the apes, BUY "Don't Give Me Names", simple as that. There are MANY tunes on it that appear on their best hits, so SOMEBODY liked them. I have an unusually wide spectrum of musical interest. I LOVE "Quality" wherever it may be found. My collection also includes, Tapping The Vein, Die Happy & Lacuna Coil. I even like The Lords Of Acid once in awhile. As of late, Whenever I feel the need for un-leashed raw female power & expression, I reach for "Planet Of The Apes", it Frosts My Cake. Expand to other Guano Apes CDs Like DONT GIVE ME NAMES, AFTER you've experienced them. Breathe in the aroma, kick the turds around awhile, get to know Land Of The Apes, FIRST. However there are GOOD tunes here not found on their best hits CD.

    4 out of 5 stars :: ««« proud like gods »»» ::.......2000-12-08

Don't give me names is the best Guano Apes album far. After proud like a god they have grew, and turned better. This album is a litlle less agressive than Proud like a God, but still can be agressive. The sound has improved in all its way, turned more mellodical and more complex.

The album is all great, but Rain, Big in Japan, and Living in a Lie are the best ones.

It is a great step for Guano, and they are getting far beyond. They are creating an image, and getting away with it. Buy it, if you are a fan, buy it if you are a beliver.

5 out of 5 stars oh my god.......2000-08-11

I live in great britain and dont get to hear many foreign bands but in the last few years ive changed that thanks to a tv channel called viva(a geramn music channel i get on my satelight)and now i listen to quite a few foreign band although none stick out more that guano apes and liquido both of which are from germany.i purchased pround like a god the guanos first album and rocked out all the time i have had it for nearly a year and still it has its place in my cd changer at all times now when i got hold of the new album i didnt quite know what to think but after listening to it for about 5 days solid i found my self rocking out so much it was un believeable and found myself doubting which album of the 2 was the best an question i still dont have an answer for but let me say this no matter which album of theres you buy you will rock out so much it is unbelieveable. This album is definately one of the best this year and will quickly see of any competetors quickly. dont think about it just buy it and you will found out now what many people will be learning soon the guano apes rock!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Rock Band in a long time.......2000-07-31

While this CD doesn't live up to their first one, it has such a carnal power in it, that you can't help but flip out in your car, your room, or wherever you're listening to it at. A few months ago I saw the Guano Apes live here in Stuttgart, Germany. They staight up rocked. I've never in my life been to a better concert. I know that I'll take every opportunity to see them again for as long as I'm over here in Europe, and hopefully, when I do return to the States, they'll be more popular over there and be playing more shows. As long as they continue to put out a product anywhere near as powerful as their first two albums, I'll be buying them as soon as they're available

    5 out of 5 stars It's hard to describe.......2000-06-30

when i first bought the album i wanted to do no more than listen to Big in Japan, but after listening to the album i can't seem to get enough. starting with No Speech, Guano Apes don't stop rocking. i can't really pinpoint a favorite on this album. regardless of where you're at you just want to stop and rock out while the song plays. Songs like Dodel Up, Mine All Mine, and Gogan are extremely powerful songs and the Guano Apes don't stop with just those. I look forward to seeing what they can put out on the future.

Like Hüsker Dü and the Replacements, Soul Asylum started out as a high-voltage Minneapolis punk band in 1981. By the time they arrived at mainstream success 11 years later they had transformed into simple blue-collar rockers in the mold of Pearl Jam and Tom Petty. This solo album accompanies frontman Dave Pirner's latest metamorphosis as a rough-and-tumble lounge singer. He dips into sublime smooth-jazz grooves on "364," pays elated tribute to Al Green on the soulful "Feel the Need," and slips into Dusty Springfield territory on the lush "Start Treating People Right," which features a simple piano melody that would not sound entirely out of place on Norah Jones's record. The only nod to his rock & roll past is the tellingly titled "Much Too Easy," which starts out with a blast of distortion before dissolving into a muted electronic groove. Now more than ever, the verses of Soul Asylum's biggest hit seem apt: "Runaway train, never going back..." --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars He still has "Soul"........2005-04-12

I always liked Soul Asylum, but the only reason I got this is because I found it for a few bucks. What a score. True, there's nothing on this disc that actually rocks, but I really like this new sound, and think Dave sounds as good as ever. I liken "Faces And Names" to the first solo albums from Chris Robinson and Chris Cornell, not as great as their former bands, but still very good, and a must for the real fans. "Teach Me To Breathe" must have been the single from this, but I also like "Feel The Need", "Someday Love", and honestly the whole thing is good. Sorry to see this is currently out of print, and no other news from Dave. If you find it, grab it.

1 out of 5 stars this is horrible.......2004-03-12

this is horrible. i think dave pirner last wrote something good in 1981. time to move on folks. you dont listen to dennis de young any longer do you?

4 out of 5 stars Different clothes, same attitude.......2003-12-28

As a Soul Asylum diehard, the 1st listen to this album was some kind of a shock, since the 2 extracts "Faces and Names" and "Never Recover" don't show Dave Pirner's "new sound". RnB Songs like "364" or "Feel The Need" have NOTHING in common with the band, be it Say What You Will or Grave Dancers Union era. But after 2-3 listenings you see the same attitude, same honesty, same talent as every Soul Asylum release. Pirner is now skillful enough to cross genres and still "lookin' good". And, after all this is another Dave Pirner album, the new influences don't make him sound like Blues Brothers!

4 out of 5 stars New Orleans do him good...........2003-01-22

It is more than obvious Mr. Pirner has spent time walking the streets of New Orleans. His heartbroken, sometimes off-key voice is at the front like never before. If Soul Asylum is your band, this CD will fit in well with your collection. Nice solo debut from a man who knows to nod and wink at his surroundings. Nice jazz and soul takes throughout this offering. Well thought out lyrics. The cream has risen to the top.

4 out of 5 stars Pirner Shows Another Side.......2002-08-15

Die-hard fans of Soul Asylum may find this solo disc from frontman Dave Pirner a little tough to digest, at least at first. With the exception of the title track very few of the 11 tracks on "Face and Names" would fit on a Soul Asylum record. Anyone expecting the fury of "Somebody To Shove" or even the acoustic touches of "Runaway Train" will have to keep looking. Instead, Pirner and friends create a soulful, cleanly produced set of tracks that, for the most part, work very well. What makes it special is that, while Pirner has changed the sonic nature of his work, his insighful, personal lyrics remain. When he sings that he will "Never Recover", you believe him. Highlights include "Someday Love", "Teach Me To Breath", and "Start Treating People Right". Last but not least there is the title track which, honestly, is among the best songs I've heard this year. Similar to Soul Asylum's "String Of Pearls", the song "Faces and Names" is about as close to perfect as you can imagine and worth the price of the disc in and of itself. I still long for new Soul Asylum music but, if Pirner chooses to do stuff like this in their off-time or even for the rest of his career, I'll be the first in line to check it out.
